This song hits so hard, even though I was a 70's baby, born in 72, I am a white kid born in Flint, was raised with all of us, we didn't know color, we knew friends and family, we knew good food and great friends, we knew our best friends Mom(at age 7) would whip our ass no matter, and my Mom wouldn't question. White society does not understand the meaning of this Sam Cooke classic. It takes people with a soul to feel the deep pain in this song, and white America in particular has not demonstrated that it has one. The impetus for this music was the condition created by white supremacy and its hatred. Sam Cooke's version, in my opinion, is one of the greatest songs ever recorded.

This was my anthem back in the day, growing up as a coloured boy in Apartheid South Africa. And this song has so much meaning to this day. It moves my soul and when I sit alone and let my heart listen, it sometimes brings a tear to my eye.
