- "A Change Is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke
Lyrics:
I was born by the river in a little tent
Oh, and just like the river I’ve been a-runnin’ ever since.
It’s been a long, a long time comin’,
but I know, oh-oo-oh,
a change gon’ come, oh yes, it will.
It’s been too hard living but I’m afraid to die
‘Cause I don’t know what’s up there beyond the sky
It’s been a long, a long time comin’,
But I know, oh-oo-oh,
A change gonna come, oh yes, it will.
I go to the movie and I go downtown
Somebody keep tellin’ me don’t hang around.
It’s been a long, a long time coming, but I know, oh-oo-oh,
A change gon’ come, oh yes, it will.
Then I go, oh-oo-oh, to my brother and I say, brother, help me please.
But he winds up knocking me back down on my knees, oh.
There’ve been times that I thought I couldn’t last for long
But now I think I’m able to carry on
It’s been a long, a long time comin’,
But I know, oh-oo-oh, a change gonna come, oh yes, it will.

My two best friends recently died. One of them a month ago, the other a year ago. One night the three of us were hanging out on a Saturday night having ourselves a good time, laughing and driving around when my friend in the passenger seat asked my friend sitting in the backseat to sing for us. My friend in the backseat could sing very well and was in a gospel group with his brothers. He sang "a change gonna come". Little did I know that he was going to end up singing it to his funeral months later and now he's gone now too. These men were literally like brothers to me and now each time I hear this beautiful song, I dedicate it to them. Junie and JD, this is for you. My brothers
prayers up bro.
prayers to you my bro
May the love of the Holy Spirit be with you, dear.
RIP to the soul bros.
❤️
“It’s been too hard livin, but I’m afraid to die”
🥺
That's so deep
deep line there mane...
I can't relate to the struggle of black people but those words hit me hard for my deep depression
Kuivia it’s not just about black people problems .. everyone has problems, our jobs as human beings is to spread love , that’s why society so messed up now my friend.. just keep ya head up and pray , you’ll be fine , spread that love and positivity, just take all that pain and turn it into something
When I was 9, my. mum told me that black people are exactly the same as white people. Since I was 14 I have been arguing against racism, I protested in London against apartheid and that people must stop buying South African produce. I protested when Martin Luther king was shot and Steve Biko was killed by the Sth African police. I am now 70 and I am STILL arguing against racism. Will it end in my lifetime? As mum said, we are all the same and we all originate from the same place, Africa. My skin just happens to be white.
Wow your mum is so proud
Wow your mother was a wise woman
Kate Younge: Your mother was a very astute woman. She raised a respectable, compassionate, loving and caring young Kate. What a mother and you should be proud of her for so many reasons. I am certain that you raised your children the same as your mother raised you. You were blessed.
You should be given a medal. I am giving one for you and one for your wonderful mother, for raising a decent human being. Unfortunately, this world does not have many mothers as yours nor children who grow up to listen to their mothers/parents.
Yes, we are all human beings some nice and some are not. It depends on how your parents or your caregivers raised you.
You are an angel on earth without wings. Thank you for being a kind and wonderful human being who to this day remembers the teachings of her mother.
I don’t think racism will ever end. Our minds will always categorize everything and everyone. But who knows.
Lots of love to you and your BEAUTIFUL mother ❤️

I dont care how many people remake this...no one can do this song like Mr. Cooke
Yeah so many have tried but Cooke owned this song. You can feel that he meant every single word he sang and had actually lived it. There's a unique strength and soulfulness in his voice that no other singer has been able to replicate.
Why do people remake classics
If you want to sing it that’s fine
But no one wants to hear your recording of it

Yes it's so sad.
The song helped sustain the Civil Rights Movement during its lowest times, and is an inspiration today.
This song is about black lives keep it that way ✊

Jonathan Lewis seriously, so many people have died before they could see change. They still fought to no avail. Our world is need of change. We've had Dr. King and Gandhi , who will be the next person to bring attention to the real problems of this world?
jimmy figueroa
Don't forget my man Malcolm X 🙏🏿
dreamerof93 oh yea I didn't mean just them. there's so many people all over the world who have brought change or fought for it. Respect to all of them.
Rmr Tyo read my second comment. I was only using those two as well known, prominent figures as examples towards my point. I hope more people would find the initiative to try to change things, even just one small thing at a time because everything starts from somewhere.
amen.,.. beautiful statement... R.I P to a ll of my fallen Angel's..
There has never been another Sam Cook. He could take any song & make it his own. Sam Cook will never be forgotten! ♥️♥️♥️
I wish he had lived long enough to hear Whitney Houston. I he had been still been around and still singing, they would have collaborated for sure for at least a song or two.
John Legend is even better, respectfully.
Bless all those who have marched for and died for the freedom we know today.
Freedom? Hmmm.
We're not there yet
And we need to continue fighting for those who come after us. Justice has not been served.
Barbi Button we’re not at a point that satisfy humanity today and we’re fighting but during centuries before us, people were already struggling for a better world and the freedom that we know today as the freedom that we have to aim is not the freedom that humans were fighting for a few years ago : this was harder to believe in because the freedom is searching everyday above the limits that were posed yesterday because of the fights that we all still have today and the fights that people had before us sacrificing their lives for better days. I think that what he meant by the « freedom we know today ».
Yes. And continue to do so
Who’s here in 2020 and still waiting for that change?
🤚🏼
We on our way to change.
Sad but true
Fifty years ago we stood together chanting, "We hear you! We're with you! We'll stand with you in peace!" And still waiting for that change.
Never give up. Never give in. We have to be the change we wanna see in the world. Change is hard. And slow. But we can do it. We just keep going.
The sheer fact that this song was written in 1964 and is still relevant especially in 2020 tells you all you need to know. This has to stop.

it's so sad thinking there are always racial issues when we are only one race. There are different ethnicities and cultures, but human race is just one. Only one. So what's the point of race/racial? I'd understand some difficulties (not hate, hanger, and killings and so on) if we talk about cultural differences...but United States wasn't based on multiracial variety, always praising the great values of its democracy, freedom and so on?? I always thought this was just a façade.
I am very sorry for what's happening and happened in USA (also Italian immigrants, latinos, irish have been mistreated since day one when arriving in US...not to even mention the Native Americans.... history thaught that anglosaxons have always had the tendency to be oppressors, just think about India or Africa and their colonies...but also portuguese/spaniah with the trade of Africans)...racism and ignorance still run wild and free in US (but also in other countries), besides all the words said about the land of the free and what a great democracy is...which is not. United States is an extremely controversial country, with lots of disparities and weird values. Of course I am talking in general, it's not like this everywhere and not everyone is that way but, sadly, there is a huge percentage that represents the above said. Sending love and good energy from across the Atlantic (Italy) 🌷🌷
We can get back on track brotha we can

Those were the times when Music had Soul , Singers had Exceptional Voices , Lyrics had Meanings and SAM COOK was one of these Timeless Singers.
Exactly ❤
Sam Cooke wrote this song after being imprisoned for "disturbing the peace" after refusing to leave a Holiday Inn when they tried to kick his band out. He was scared of the song because it came to him suddenly and seemed really ominous. He asked his friend what it sounded like and he told him "it sounds like death" meaning he thought they'd kill him for the song. So Cooke only performed the song 1 time to a live audience. Just a month after its release and rapid use in the civil rights movement he was caught in a situation in which he was accused of rape by a prostitute who robbed him and then was shot dead by a woman across the hall he suspected was hiding the girl. The woman who claimed to have been raped by him was later charged with second degree murder of her boyfriend. This man had a really tragic life but I believe in some ways it all culminated into this one song. It was a song he feared but ultimately it was one of the songs that immortalized him past the 33 years he existed on this earth.
Wow .. Had no idea. Absolutely a great song. One of my favourites. I'm a 69 year old white guy from Canada. Sam Cooke is awsome!

+Endure and Survive - You're going from post to post on a soulful song trying to stir up hatred. Point proven. As I said on my post, which you so devilishly disrupted, you're a lowlife ignoramus. #trollalert #noadhominem #facts
+ Endure and Survive Lol look up the definition of "superfluous" and you will find that it is an "unnecessary word", especially when used out of context you jackass. Wait jackass is too big of a word for you also goofball. Oh wait... to recap...P.S. my life's been filled with fond memories and notable achievements thus far. Furthermore, proudly I'm probably old enough to be your father dweasle. Thank God I'm not. It would be a shameful thing to give birth to such a wuss. Glad tidings and good deeds.
Grow a pair, this song was written for truly tough times, not because someone you don't like is president.

keannabrown VEVO yesss...me too❤
keannabrown VEVO : please don't be sad. I was born and lived that way. Never cried. We need to worry about all us, now. I wish I could share my emails with you. You've no idea what these libral asses say to me. Most of the time, threats of rape, murder, kill all soldiers. I'm a crusty, old, black bitch. To me, it's like doing the 60's again. What makes it worse is the hatred is spread to everybody out there. I don't want to repeat this. Strong families got all of us through all that mess, back then. We'll do it again, if have to. My family...Black, white, asian. It never mattered to us. Good people. Happy Thanksgiving! God bless you and your family!

It might be because they included Political and Religious figures that not everyone cares for. Many political agendas pushed in this video that were not even heard of in the time frame the song was released.
Earl Sheppard That could be one of the explanations, it’s sad how people are so closed minded to things that they don’t agree with.
Im crying hard listening to this because of the daily, weekly, monthly, yearly murders of Black people by police officers. I just cannot I just cannot😩😩😩

Hit like who have come here in tears after what happened today to George Floyd😢
Yes
@Seeking Deliverance
For someone that seems so smart, so in control you really managed to lack evedence where is the report where is the link and black people make up 12 percent of the entire US and that's not including all the other people that are with us you can't put 12 million people in prison the won't end any time soon you will deal the this for the rest of humanity so if you really think that guns won't be in this by time we end this hen nigga have fun with the little time you have left I'd rather die for a cause rather than live for nothing, have a nice day.
@Seeking Deliverance Lol you should do your research. The medical report came in and stated that Floyd died from cut of blood circulation to the brain and cut of air to the lungs. All 4 officers are being convicted and charged of 2nd degree murder. These "thieves" turned out to be mainly white (middle-aged and teens) trying to cause trouble. The black people involved did it out of rage after going through systematic racism for hundreds of years. Instead trying to turn the events around why don't you try to put yourself in someone else's shoes instead of thinking of yourself, and understand how hard their lives are EVERY DAY. Don't make excuses. Just listen and learn. Understand. Jesus loves us and is with us throughout all of life. And that's what matters!❤
@Seeking Deliverance Why are you lying? Both autopsies (the one by the state and the private one conducted by his family) called his death a homocide. The county medical examiner specifically stated that it was cardiopulmonary arrest caused by the subdual, restraint, and neck compression of Floyd. The private autopsy said it was mechanical asphyxia.
BOTH outright said it was a homicide caused by Derek Chauvin kneeling on his neck.
I do not understand why you'd come here and lie about it, unless you have intent to deceive others. And if that's the case, I wonder: do you have some relationship to Chauvin or one of the other officers involved? Or are you just a racist piece of shit, glad to see another black man dead at the hands of police?
Seeking Deliverance evil degenerate! You have more sympathy for the police, the murderers who parade in uniforms? Than for a soul who was forcefully taken before his time? You feel sorry for material items that can be easily replaced?
Know this, all you said will come to pass but not for the oppressed, justice is coming for people like you! Those without humanity in them, evil spiteful creatures that refuse to see the truth.

One of the most powerful songs ever written.
🎤 (Drop)
I was on the MTA taking the subway and there was someone asking for change. I gave the man a dollar. A few moments later the man started singing this song and something inside pushed me to sing the song with him. I hit every note and word with him to the embarrassment of my wife and sister who were with me at the time. The thing was, I didn't even know I knew the song. I think about this moment often.

Wow! Beautiful story. Thank you. You were blessed. Are!
He asked for change. You gave him a dollar. So that means that for you some change is gonna come.
One should never boast about their good deeds. It takes away from the deed itself. I heard something like that before.
@@patricktalamantes5503 He wasn't boasting. He was simply giving us an example of a human exchange that benefitted both parties and all of us who were privileged with his good example to follow. You are way too critical, legalistic, finger pointing for any one to not question your sincerity. I know there are those who don't give from their heart and only give to appear kind but I'd guess you are wrong in judging this man.

I listen to this song everyday. I know people on here say this is a civil rights movement song and not any of the other movements and that's true but let me tell u what I use it for. In a short amount of time I went through my uncle having been murdered, grandmother die and my soulmate, which I have two kids with cheat on me with my best friend then leave me. Thought about suicide but I know a change is gonna come and I can carry on. The Song is about pushing through and getting stronger even when you can't see the change over the horizon yet.
