Maybe Ironwood would be suitable for making a spoon type lure. There seems to be a trend these days for making large Pike spoons from non metal materials.

Hey Marlin Baits. Idea. What about a Multi-wood lure. Like Balsa for the back half, Iron Wood in the middle or belly, and another wood for the front and top of the bait. Seems difficult but if you are looking for a challenge I'd love to see it.
good idea! id actually really like to see this, maybe the iron wood in the middle could be an alternative to putting lead in the bait. the pieces of wood could probably be glued together to make one blank to work with.

I used to work in a lumber mill. Ipe sucks lol pretty heavy and flexible when dealing with 20" 1x6. Gotta be carefull too that stuff was really expensive like $8,000 a unit

@MarlingBaits. Its pronounced ( E-pay) when I was a fiberglasser we worked on a house that the owner had all his decks made out of IPE planks. Big big bucks and every board had to be pre drilled and screwed with stainless steel.

I could be wrong, but didn't he make one before? Like a few years ago for Halloween? I know that I've seen a few zombie lures before, but they might not be Marlings (better than Rapala).

So I just discovered you this week and have watched HOURS of your vids. My GF even loves them too. Keep doing you man!
We have Ironwood in Pennsylvania. The ironwood you have likely came from Africa. I find it in Pennsylvania in areas of wet forest or swampy places. It looks like twisted black licorice candy in appearance. When live it is strong and flexible. I cut small saplings and make walking sticks from them. Once this wood dries, it is so hard and strong cutting it will ruin sawblades, and sparks will fly from the chainsaw chain. Locus, Hemlock, and white oak are similar but nothing I know of is as strong or as hard as this wood. I see you found one wood that sucks as a lure making material. I have a suggestion for a material to fill baits and make them lighter if you choose. Buy some insulation foam in a spray can. It will expand and fill voids in baits and reduce weight. It is hard once dry and can be cut and sanded if needed. Debo is one of the other You-Tube channels I tend to annoy as I do you with my comments. Your dog acts as crazy smart as you do, this makes me laugh; you look alike and act alike. You may be distantly related in some strange way.

That ironwood is a nice concept. Maybe try a "reverse" jerk bait with the bill in the front but facing backwards to lift the bait up when you jerk it. Cool video!

It's official, lure makers don't like iron wood.

You should try putting the large lip on the top of the bait angled up since the ironwood sinks so when you reel it wants to rise and sink when you pause...just a thought. Love the videos great work!
Try a feathered extended trailer hook set up or small rings to extend your hooks away from that lip in the back! The walk on the iron bait once reversed was great! It would be great for the novice who hasn't learned to twitch a bait. Keep doing what you do!

The dust from the ipe can cause upper respiratory problems. And a splinter can fester pretty fast too because of the oils in the wood. Great resilient wood but if your not careful it can be bad lol.

How about glueing some ironwood to another wood like poplar to make a composite wood bait. You could potentially make a bait that could function without adding lead to the belly if you had some ironwood for the bottom half. That would be an interesting project to try.... Great video as always!

A friend gave me a couple pieces of wood this exact color. A little dark, but even darker between the grains. Feels heavy too. No it's not dark oak or black walnut wood. I kept wondering what type of lure this could be used for. You enlightened me. And the idea to add the floating aspect to the top of the bait. Thanks for sharing.
