    fun facts. Coast Guard has been a part of every major and multiple minor operations the US military has conducted since its inception. Including the gulf war iraqi freedom Grenada panama Vietnam Korea WWII WWI. Many of the larger cutters actually deploy abroad all the time to the pacific the Carribean and hell sometimes rarely even as far as the black sea. Also with the icebreakers, as hopefully more are coming into service in 3026, allow coasties a chance to see Arctic and Antarctic areas including Iceland New Zealand and Australia. Its a very broad experience because the coast guard has so many jobs to do. Hell back in the 1870s when it was the revenue cutter service a revenue cutter service officer took command of an army company for a battle that lasted a week or so in Washington state. With the coast guard you never know what's going to happen. And hopefully i can experience it myself real soon! As for your question about rifles. Coast Guard uses their rifles all time for law enforcement operations. All coasties trained with and are certified with their service rifle and pistol at basic and then bi-yearly or something when part of boarding teams at small boat stations. And many are also qualified with a variety of machine guns shotguns and even grenades.

      All true. I did a 3 month deployment on the Cutter Rush. All of the medium and high endurance cutters do 2-3 month deployments. Even small cutters do multi-day patrols.

    Being from Atlanta, I requested an east coast field med and command on my dream sheet at HM A-school. I got Camp Pendleton instead, and most of my friends from the west coast and requested a west coast command got east coast. In hindsight though I'm actually really glad I got west coast, but do think its funny almost everyone got the opposite of what they requested. Awesome video and have always been a little curious as to what coast guard training is like, definitely seems very similar to Navy boot camp. Thanks for the upload!

    Hey just got out of basic about 3 months ago. They absolutely say “fly away from me”. The sir and ma’am in the beginning is just for the first three days during processing while the recruits start adjusting to the environment, from then on its Petty Officer ____. For the orders every company in boot camp is different how they tell the recruits, but we fill out a “dream sheet” in like week 3 to request where we want to go and then week 5 we get our orders. I got to play trombone in the training band for 8 weeks. We marched in parades on the weekend and always took first place in the parades and won loads of trophies.

    Minutes 18-end
    1) if they're on probation and mess up further, they'll be reverted 1 (or even 2 weeks) - sent to the company behind them to re-do the week and delay their graduation. 2) RAMP is a "punishment platoon" something no other branch has...the JAGs from the DoD decided that they were too much like correctional custody so recruits assigned to it should have all tha rights of receiving an Article 15 and among other things, consult with an attorney...so all DoD branches did away with it. USCG is not DoD so they still have it. Who's hard core now? 3) you pointed out the guy "quick stepping" in the hallway...that's literally what you're required to do. Be loud, be fast. 4) yes, Fly Away = get away from me. 5) Week 4, everyone fills out their "Dream Sheet" listing preferred District/Station location/Specific type of station/type of cutter or even a specific cutter. Most actually get pretty close to exactly what they want, but the needs of the CG come first...if you're at the top of the class, you may get exactly what you asked for...at the bottom and you'll get what no one else wants. End of week 5 you find out where your going. Some enlist with guaranteed district - but, you cannot get guaranteed disteict for the districts where Hawaii and Florida are located because everyone wants those. Also, in the CG you pick your rate (job) and once you go to A school (specialized school for your chosen rate) you again fill out a dream sheet but this one has a list of assignments equal to the number in the class and you rank them, ie 1 - STA Kauai, 2 - STA Key West, 3 - CGC Eagle, etc. They then assign based on class rank...1st in class will get their 1st choice, 2nd in class will get their highest ranking choice among those still available, etc. Different people have different reasons for where they pick, some want Alaska, some Guam, some Oklahoma...so rankings from one person to the next can be wildly different and most get one of their top 3 picks.

    I was USCG 1996-2017, E-6 ET1. The uniforms were rather bad until about 2004 when they instituted the ODU or Operational Dress Uniform. The original ODU was tucked in, but then moved to untucked about 2008. The Original uniform was rather cheap and looked like Dickies you could buy off the shelf, we even called them “Gas Station Attendant Uniforms”, when the ODU was introduced we actually looked like the military branch we were supposed to be.

    At 14 minutes in, you stated the Coast Guard was born from the Navy, which is not true. It was born as the Revenue Cutter Service in 1790 and they and the U.S. Life Saving Service merged in 1915 to form the modern day U.S. Coast Guard. When I was in USCG boot camp in 1995 we had to call all Petty Officers (NCO's) by their name. Also, I believe they're only saying "Sir or ma'am" in this video in the first couple of days in boot camp while the recruits are in receiving company. Once they get their Company Commanders they all are addressed as "Petty Officer XXX or Chief XXX".

      It doesn't impact you much. The most cold you'll experience is from marching place to place. Everything is indoors. Prepare to value your sleep and focus on exercise and getting fit. Make sure you can swim.
      When you get out and go to sub school, FOCUS on getting high grades so that you can have a better chance of getting stationed somewhere decent (anywhere but Virginia)
      Your rating will show up on your orders before you get there. Hopefully you score sonar tech or fire control technician. Do not waste your time in the "silver dolphins". Go Quarterdeck. A-school is the easiest time in your career and you should make the most of it.

    I had a friend who recently retired from the Coast Guard and he loved it, always stationed somewhere nice that had beaches and nice weather (which to me would be a huge pro for joining the Coast Guard, unless you're stationed in Alaska or somewhere up north in the winter time). I will say the RDC's are definitely a little more hardcore on the recruits here than what I remember from the Navy, like I don't recall being quizzed on the chow line before I sat down to eat, which I think would be a good idea, keep recruits on their toes, so I daresay they're even tougher than the Navy boot camp. The only thing I didn't get was the "Ramp" stomping thing unless they want recruits to go crazy or something, doesn't look intense at all certainly not like the Roman chair like the one recruit did, also the way they sound off is just hilarious I can't understand what they were saying, but overall very impressed with their boot camp and their uniforms as you said look sharp and very squared away.

      RAMP isn’t just stomping. It’s a roughly 3 day to one-week period where you are separated from your company and are constantly hounded by company commanders in your face at all times. You cannot walk anywhere around the regiment without shouting “RAMP” on repeat, and you are forced to push every 20 meters you travel.
      You also have to sweat in the form of carrying weighed objects around the regiment, including a life boat with other RAMP recruits.

    I love when NON-CG military try and talk about the Coast Guard because really, they are as clueless as your average non-military citizen. So, some corrections (minutes 1-8)...1) USGB does deploy, although shorter than the Navy (60-90 days at the most, usually), they go all the way west to Japan and south to Antarctica. 2) they have participated in every major war since like WWI (or even earlier?) - in wartime they transfer to DoD and become a part of the Navy and support alongside the Navy. At Normandy, guess who was driving the boats? It wasn't the Navy. 3) yes, CG ODUs are fire-resistant (which has led to problems lately since one of the chemicals was found to be harmful to the environment and finding a replacement has caused shortages). 4) my son graduates bootcamp next week and yes, they still train with rifles - unlike the Navy, once they reach E4 they are Federal Law Enforcement Officers...they board vessels and take drug runners, illiegal migrants, etc in to custody...they don't always want to comply. In boot camp they have firerms training and marksmanship awards. 5) why would someone join the Navy and soend their whole enlistment just training to do a job instead of the CG where you are literally saving lives daily? 🤣...you should have joined the USCG. 6) yes, this is a REAL branch of the US military and gets ALL the game benefits (including post-9/11 GI bill) as every other branch). 7) yelling at USCG bootcamp has a purpose - it's not "just to get yelled at" - emergencies don't happen in calm, quiet seas...emergencies happen in terrible weather and the only way to hear each other is to yell...loud...which is why USCG recruits typically lose their voices by week 5. Engine rooms are loud and if there isna fire, you MUST YELL to hear and be heard. So you may never hear yelling again in the Navy after boot, but if you work at all on a boat in the USCG, you WILL hear yelling when you haven't done anything wrong. 8) USCG handles "life and death situations" EVERY DAY...no other branch does...but, that's why other branches don't have the same enlistment qualifications as the USCG.

  • @whenhen
    @whenhen 11 месяцев назад +3

    Considering that a large percentage of the coast guard needs to do maritime enforcement, potentially against cartel controlled vessels, the use of personal rifles makes sense. Many of them need to directly board potentially criminal boats so I’d imagine there’s occasionally a need for something heavier duty than a 9mm. During basic they do shoot a pistol. Keep in mind that the vast majority of enlisted active duty come in as non-rates (technically the same concept as PACT but in practice different) so it’s not as though they can just say all maritime law enforcement issues are being handled exclusively by someone who went to school specifically for that while everyone else ducks
    Also from what I’ve read (I was debating the navy vs USCG for a while) the coast guard has the highest rate of not graduating boot camp on time. They call it being reverted which is their equivalent to asmoed. I’m not sure if the USCG would want to highlight this aspect of boot camp for potential recruits which may be why it’s not discussed in the video.

      I heard that CG boot camp way back was run by USMC DIs. Any truth to that? Might explain some of the intensity, this is quite a bit louder than when I went through Army basic.

    So I’m an instructor at the firefighting schoolhouse in Norfolk. Coast Guardsmen come through and do our firefighting courses and our gas free school. This one time I was teaching a lesson from our general shipboard firefighting course, and there were a bunch of Coast Guardsmen in the class. I introduced myself, and I always end my introduction by asking “Are there any questions so far?” This one Coastie, who I assume was just trying to be a smart a**, raised his hand and asked “Why did you join the Navy?” Don’t ask where this came from or what I was thinking, but without skipping a beat or hesitating, i replied by saying “I wanted to be in the real military”.

    Why does the Coast Guard say "Fly away" instead of "Sail away"? Then a recruit could sing "Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with meeeee" as they leave 😀

    • @snapoffmonkeybranch1242
      @snapoffmonkeybranch1242 2 месяца назад

      Well, that's one reason. And flying away is faster than sailing away.
