The 7100 is holding it's own really nice! I own one. Sure is handly to just connect one cable and I have different runs of control cable all over the house, including outdoors to the patio.
i realize Im kind of randomly asking but do anyone know a good site to stream new series online?
@Ari Johan Lately I have been using FlixZone. You can find it by googling :)
@Noel Jace yea, have been watching on Flixzone for since march myself :D
@Noel Jace Thanks, I signed up and it seems to work :D I really appreciate it !
@Ari Johan You are welcome xD
I was budgeting for a 7300, but had a hard time deciding to pass on the opportunity to have an additional 2m/70cm .
This video did it for me.
Why not ft 991a, just price
Yikes. I run a 7100, was thinking about a 7300. Looks like I’ll have to get a 7610 to see any actual difference. Bit of an eye opener. Thanks for the vid
Really encouraging result. The Yaesu 991a is definitely worse on HF unfortunately
New to HAM, but recently go my Extra class. Ive been really impressed with the 2730a. So much so that I have one in each of our trucks, and one as my primary 2m 70cm shack rig. Ive gotten spoiled with the face plate mounted on a cell phone holder that I put right next to my keyboard. So now I think that the 7100 makes sense for my personal preference in smaller and more easily placed units. I could just slide the 7100 controls right next to the 2730, and I would be set. I scan hf through an sdr anyway, so I can clearly see where the activity is.
Considering the older tech of the 7100 it sounds damn good! I am a bit biased being the owner of a 7100 but I have a hard time really telling which one sounds better. 7300 a bit more muffled and watery, 7100 crisp and clear. I suppose this could be a result of RX audio settings?
I was also surprised, both sound fairly good, despite having different technologies, 7300 has a better speaker, 7100 still sounds great!
you must understand the speaker in the 7100 is in the head unit and facing away from you i have both radios and believe me the 7300 is better not by much though
*You can't tell sh!t without using the same speaker on each one. It's a no-brainer to pick up a set of $30 used Polk or Boston CR4 small speakers off ePay so it's a RADIO comparison not a cheap speaker comparison.*
Great video! It just proves again no such thing as a perfect radio. Both of those radios are very nice.
Thanks, I like them both!
This is a difficult choice for me. Once I buy it, there is not turning back for a second guess.
It gets to a point of a toss up.; could not make up my mind, bought both
1. IC-7100
2. IC-7300
Interesting. I have had a 7300 & 7610 and both seemed to be noisier than my 7700 & other radios. I am thinking of buying a 7100. Thanx for the vid.
It's a damn nice radio. I have been using one for two years. My 7100 goes directly in to a switch that is connected to 7 designated tuned verticals out back. No tuner what so ever. Works GREAT!
you will miss the waterfall
@@ronknight3417 no....no not really. That's just a shiny object that hasn't been in amateur radio for the last 100 years. Performance outweighs shiny objects. Sorry.
I'm glad I'm not the only person that thinks this. The 7300 is a damn good radio. I understand why Icom calls it an "entry level" radio. There are much better radios out there.
My IC-7700 is just unbelievable. That radio's going to stay in my shack for many many years. The receiver on my 7700 I think is probably top of the line compared to a lot of radios today even these newer ones.
I love my IC-7300 but have always though the RX audio could be better.
Put a high end speaker on mine and that was it.
Great video. I have a 7300 and am buying a 7100. This confirms what I have been reviewing. Both great radios. I have a question, what did you use to prop the 7100 control head to keep it vertical? Great set up!
The 7100 is held vertical using a custom home made support bracket using the 3 screws in the back, not beautiful but it is hidden. I like the 7100 because it is analog, we can use the RF squelch, the 7300 does not work as well with the RF squelch. The 7100 is mainly used for VHF/UHF/D-Star.
@@VE2FGJ That is exactly my plan for the 7100! Plus I know it will work as a back up for HF. Thanks!
there is a threaded hole in the back of the 7100 head for mounting mobile ime sure you could use this with a bit of thought
Had the 7300 and a nice radio on weak signals , I have just ordered the 7100 and was wondering how it compares on weak RX signals, this test as reassured me that the multi functionality of the 7100 as not been compromised in the RX department, you tend to get a trade off in a shack in the box on receive than you would with any radio specifically designed for the HF bands only, its nice to see here (to my lug holes) that the 7100 just came out on top on the weak signal test...thanks for the test, its taken a little of my concern away that buying a shack in the box 7100 that there as not been any trade off in RX performance.
Yes the 7100 still does a good job, even better when we reduce the RF gain, I just wish it had a Waterfall!!!
@@VE2FGJ You can get software to do that for you, ok not as portable had it been on the radio but you can always go the software way on yeah laptop hooked up to the radio... if and when you do go mobile with it.
@@peterwaine923 Yes I did try that, used a SDRPlay RSP2 + MFJ-1708-SDR, worked well.
A switching power supply with no RF noise? How did you eliminate the RF noise, just put ferrite chokes on all the cables?
The DM-330FX does not produce much noise, I also use ferrites on the AC and DC lines.
I have both. The 7100 is better in all respects especially on CW! Audio cleanness on the 7100 is amazing. Try listening to some BC FM. Very pure with zero hiss. The 7300 has the cool scope but it's noisy in comparison to the 7100.
I agree, I also prefer the 7100's audio and the RF Gain knob provides cleaner audio, less noise than the 7300. But that scope is irresistible, so got to have both!
@@VE2FGJ Might put my SDRPlay on the 7100
Hey Frank @ve2fgj, do you still have both radios? If so, could you run the same test but this time on CW, on a signal that is at noise floor level, say 329 with 500Hz filter and no NR, this would tell us much about the difference. It would be even better if the weak signal was a few hundred hertz off a strong signal.
Hi Mike, I do not CW, I believe both radios are good, it is a matter of preference. Over time I have found that the choice of antenna and location supersede any radio choice. Hope that helps. Thanks for the comment. 73!
Salut j'aimerais bien entrer en contact avec toi pour avoir plus d'info sur le compare. J'hesite justement entre les deux modeles. Merci et 73's de Paul, VE2BXA att gee mail point comme ;)
What stand are you using for the IC-7100?
Custom angled bracket screwed under.
As one can clearly hear, the filter on the 7300 lets much more bass through - try to set the filter to the same bandwidth & offsets next time? Maybe with an NF spectrum analyzer on a phone at the speaker?
Both Radios are shown using their own built in speakers, the 7300 has more bass than the 7100. But the goal was to show the actual signal level comparison and reception sensitivity.
How did you get it to show the band under the frequency?
It is the memory "C06" with a name. I used the CS-7100 software to populate the memories.
A better test would be if they were both run through the same audio system, not their built in speakers. The speaker and enclosure may well make a bigger difference than the reception circuits.
Agree. The goal was to compare how weak signal compares with native audio, which is what most operators use. The audio part could be improved by using better speaker/amplifier/equalizer/compressor/noise reduction.
Wow, That ic-7300 lost that race.
yep your right
I would like to konw if both rigs had the same filters and settings, I feel that 7100 is tuned better and is not a fair competition.
In all fairness, the same settings yes and filters are FIL1 on both, the 7100 has a slight shift noted by the small dot, but that would not account for the difference. In all situations for the years that I owned these radios, the 7100 always showed a slight advantage, less noise. The 7300 is by design noisier, disconnect the antenna and raise the volume, you will hear the 7300's internal noise, comparatively the 7100 is much quieter. The IC-705 is also better that the 7300 on RX with weak signals. There is no competition, the technologies are different. Hope that helps.
@@VE2FGJ Thank you very much for your soonest reply! It shows me that to buy an IC-7100 for my mobile is the best choise. Sorry for my vocabulary, I wanted to say comparison instead competition (anyway competition is good to realize which would be better). Greetings from Patagonia Argentina. LU1YES
@@GabDalPietro You are welcome, thank you for the question 73!
Great Video! de W2CSI
Glad you enjoyed it
7100 sounded better, but i think it was the speaker..
Do again using the same speaker
i had a 7100, it was the radio that had the WORST big signal immunity, a strong signal in the same band makes high qrm in the whole band. the antenna i used was a 1/2 wave dipol fir 40m. switching the ATT on did not help at all. the ic706mk2g i had, had a similar problem but when turning the ATT on, the signal immunity was much better, with the disadvantage of losing some sensitivity. the 7100 is even worse than the 706mk2g for that matter. i had bought the 7100 new. i'm glad i sold it, the guy who bought it said its a beatyful radio, and i thought whats that guy used to if he thinks that 7100 was beautyful. what kind of antenna do you use for this test? if its like 1meter wire yoz are using in this test, then i guess there will not be much problem with big signal immunity as said. i have an old icom ic765, it drives circles around the 7100, the clearity of the receiver and big signal immunity is far, FAR superior. make a comparison video if you like and lets hear then.
7100 top
molto più naturale l'audio ic7100 un vero gioiellino erede ic7000 ...........
7100 wins.
I have a 7300. The speaker is very bad. It is mandatory to use either a headphone or a better quality external speaker.
Yes external speaker/headphone helps.
Too bad 7100 doesnt look anywhere as good as it sounds.
That's definitely subjective. I think the 7100 looks great!
What a strange thing to do, not utilize the NB.
- I don't know one single Op who doesn't make use of his NB except when engaged in a local net or group wherein everyone is 20 over 9 or better. Too bad it's so impossible to simply find a normal test of two radios without someone just having to add an oddity the average user would not.
It's also almost a useless comparison when the same speaker isn't utilized. There's more difference in SQ due to the speakers than any receiver difference, unless, of course, you're trying to make a speaker vs speaker video, which would also be a waste due to the fact almost everyone uses a better sounding external speaker or if not, sets the rig in such a way the internal speaker isn't blocked.
7100 is better.
