I'm not even old enough to drink, I think I just watch these ones for Trevor
he's pretty great!
Everett Cootes
im 14, and i love watching these, theyre interesting
If you are big enough to uncork a bottle you are old enough to drink.
Same
My first ever alcoholic drink was an Old Fashion"
And to this day I still drink, but over the years I've become a bit picky on said cocktail. Because I've had it made with minimal effort,I've had it done the right way and the difference is like night and day!
See, I'm the opposite: unless you're getting wayyy too "new fashioned" with it, these ingredients aren't ever going to get ruined by putting them together. Is a good Old Fashioned *really* good? Of course! But I can walk into an unknown bar and order one, and they'll know what it is and be able to make a cocktail that I know I'll be able to drink and enjoy.
"when you use bad ice it can dilute the drink"
> Adds soda water
hahahaahhahaha
Stirling Stewart adding a controlled amount, doesn’t want the ice to melt. Idiot .. fuck off
@@KanyeWest2024 it's a joke dumbass
Mugumbo Jumbo lmao get madder noob
@@KanyeWest2024 That wasn't a controlled amount. A controlled amount was the first pop of the gun.... Then he added three more.
Growing up I've worked at a few bars, but never as a bartender. Actually it was always with my oldest brother. I was under 21 so I couldn't tend, but I loved learning the drinks, I LOVE these episodes, they add to me list of drinks to mix for my own self. I never got trained as a bartender and I wanted to learn.
3:33 that guy is the background is like “what the fuck are they doing” I want to think it’s because of the soda water in the old fashioned.😆
I needed this video. My stepfather brought home a bottle of Rye and asked me to make either an Old Fashioned or a Manhattan. Without your videos, I'd've been lost and he loved the drink. Thank you, Brian, for showing me the way to please my stepfather; when he comes home from a long day of work, he needs to unwind a bit and relax
Showing the magic of making an Old Fashioned- one of my favorite cocktails to make. I knew The Modern Rogue keeps it classy!
You wanted ideas for modern rogue?
1) How to hide a body
2) How to hot-wire a car
3) How to escape if stuck under a car
4) How to tie a tie (it's a simple idea but obviously necessary for any gentleman)
5) How to successfully pass a bribe
6) How to recognize a threat while out and about
7) How to build a homemade blowgun
Thats all I can come up with for now.
It's funny how almost all of those sound like they should be illegal lmao
Do it yourself and call it modern 14 year old
I love how two years later we can check off three of those.
First one is eaaassyy. Just report a possible dead body found in an undisclosed location, they'll go digging then when they dont find anything, you can just bury the body there since it would be easier and they wont check there again :D
Something that would be funny is Brian and Jason trying to do the drinks while Trevor just guides them!
Please do it Brian!
I just turned 21 and I think I've found suitable bad examples in you three to guide me through my 20's ;)
The only job I would ever do in the food business would be a bartender. Mixology and making drinks and just the bar atmosphere is something that's just so damn cool to me.
I'm friends with many bartenders and tbh.
It's a degrading job, especially when people demand cocktails you're unfamiliar or lack the resources to make. One of my bartender friends was asked to make a Mojito which everyone knows you need fresh mint to make,my friend didn't have said mint and the customer had such a hissyfit like you would not believe!
@@vladimir-savage72 This comment was 4 years ago and fortunately I’ve yet to step foot in the food business. But yeah, customers in every line of work are gonna come with their fair share of asshats.
Finally! Somebody to teach me how to be a proper alcoholic!
I'm already there.
*Ahem* it's Gentleman, Modern Rogue teaches you to be a Gentleman
@@MM-vs2et A proper alcoholic gentleman?
If you're a proper alcoholic you wont take the time to mix a cocktail, you'll just drink whatever you can get your hands on straight..... you're welcome.
They are very moreish. I make them with scotch whiskey
Best old fashioned I’ve ever made, and I’ve tried a ton of varying recipes. I like this with a splash of Topo Chico, Knob Creek Rye, I add a small lemon peel, I flame both the orange and lemon peels, and I use extra large ice cubes. Thank you for the vid!
My favorite Old Fashioned recipe:
2 ounces of rye (the whisky is up for you to decide)
1 barspoon of simple syrup
3 dashes of aromatic bitters (i use angustora)
3 dashes of orange bitters
Squeeze and orange peel to release the oils onto the drink once in a rocks glass, rim the glass with the peel, garnish with luxardo cherry and orange peel.
Enjoy :)
Landon
2 ounces of whiskey
3 dashes of orange bitters
Stir it with ice
Pour it on the glass, on the rocks
Squeeze a strip of orange peel around the top of the glass
Put it in the drink
Done!
You got it right
Emerald Old Fashioned:
2 oz Irish Whiskey
1 barspoon Honey Syrup, 2:1
1 barspoon Green Chartreuse
1 dash absinthe (It's probably about a barspoon, maybe a little less, too much and it completely stomps out the flavor of the whiskey)
This is tied as my favorite mixed drink with the Manhattan. These two videos were entertaining and informative. It's good to know how these are made!
Sad to say there are a lot of bartenders who do not know how to make this very simple drink. I have been to places where they use a whole orange slice, add the cherry, and then muddle the fruit... No, just no....
Also worth mentioning that this is a cocktail to be enjoyed SLOWLY. I actually prefer a bit of dilution in this drink. As the ice ments it changes the flavor profile over time. The cocktail starts out strong but finishes sweet.
well, it is a different variation on it, for example, u will see that in the book "The Bar Guide" by Williams Sonoma, the fruit is muddled as well, releasing its juices and oils, its a different beast altogether but enjoyed by many including myself. But to each his own and as long you enjoy your drink, that's what matters.^^
I often make Old Fashioneds for several people at a time so it has to be done quickly. I use a graduated shaker (to measure, not to shake). I use simple syrup, bitters and a dash of orange liquor (triple sec), cherry and of course bourbon or rye. The triple sec is for when I don't have an orange, which is often. Everyone up for another? Done in two minutes. Oh and I freeze very large ice cubes, one per glass.
There are likely hundreds of variations to the Old Fashioned. All that matters is that you end up with a drink you enjoy. Purists just like to feel superior. They can't even say "I like the original better." It's "OMG HEATHEN HOW DARE YOU RUIN IT YOU HAVE NO TASTE." Not to say anyone here is an obnoxious purist, all I'm saying is drink what you enjoy.
My favorite variation is the Emerald Old Fashioned. I also prefer using a sugar syrup to actual sugar. I'm not a fan of the grainy texture.
2 oz Irish Whiskey
1 barspoon Honey Syrup, 2:1
1 barspoon Green Chartreuse
1 dash absinthe (It's probably about a barspoon, maybe a little less)
Well yeah it's a drink from before the war, drinking like that is less common each day, when i started drinking i expected every bar to know how to make classic cocktails, once i became a bartender i learned that people mostly order beer and if it's liquor it's just straight, with ice or jack and coke...
Old fashioneds have always been my favourite. I want to try your variation with the brown sugar. I usually do 2 dashes of bitters. And I usually use bourbon.
Just tried this recipe and it was by far the best old fashioned I have ever had.
This is quickly becoming one of my favorite channels on youtube
Well seems they knew id love a typed form of the instructions, and boom right in the description.
Thanks!
IM sorry, great video, i love all the stuff modern rogue does and this is a great bartender from other videos i have seen, but i am going to be THAT GUY that has to say that putting soda water into an old fashioned is sacreligeous because the drink is older then soda water, and the marachino cherry. Now having that being said, even though the drink was made originally with rye, I actually prefer bourbon in my old fashioned, specifically a higher proof bourbon like Booker's or 1792 Full proof. Any full proof Bourbon that can stand up to the dilution is a solid choice. And in times of despair and im in a place with no bourbon or have run out, I find that scotch makes a decent old fashioned as well.
You’re not going to taste the soda water after it’s mixed unless if it’s some kind of water with a distinct strong taste. Adding soda water to a cocktail would be more akin to a 1930s or early/mid 20th century style approach so for many aficionados, this would be fine. Taste wise, you won’t be able to tell.
I agree. My whiskey of choice for an old fashioned is Wild Turkey 101 Bourbon.
Fun rouge thing get your orange swath and lay it over some hot metal or under a match if you have a steady hand. you will likely note all the small "dots" the oil is in if you have a steady enough hand you will watch as each "dot" jettisons a small flame as it explodes from the heat, there is an Eagle scout tip for ya
So Happy Modern Rogue has its own channel now. I made this Old Fashioned but used Knob Creek Smoked Maple And I have not looked back since. THANKS MODERN ROGUE!
These videos are absolute GOLD!!! Thank you...
All of these cocktail tutorials are my favorites! I can't wait until I have the opportunity to try all these!
Don't have too high of expectations. Many bars don't know how to make these kinds of cocktails, unless you do your research and find out if the bartender is legit good or just a pretender as my friends like to call those bartenders that only know basic stuff like Rum and Coke.
I had my first old fashion when I was having brunch with my mother at 21. It's been one of my go to's ever since.
Soda water with an old fashioned? Yes I agree that is sacrilegious.
Gizmomaster this! I also refuse to add suger to mine. Rye whiskey, Bitters, orange, and cherries is all you need for a perfect drink
Never soda water!!! Sugar is part of the original recipe. However cherries are not.
DJ LaMar well if you down out the Suger with whiskey then I'll be for it. Lol. My preference is no suger
I skip the sugar and go for a bit of canada dry ginger ale. How's that for sacrilege
2bitTank now I want to give that a try.
The Old Fashioned, the drink that Wisconsin could never live without.
Though we typically use brandy instead of whiskey.
I was totally hooked on the mied drinks and all the crazy experiments! I love the mix drinks because I can impress my friends and tell them to chedck out this channel for ANYTHING!
This is the first Old Fashioned recipe that I've enjoyed the most! Cheers!
Comfort food well this is my comfort drink. Used to drink them with my grandmother. Good memories
Hey guys! So I'm of a many few who found your channel through Whisky Vault with Daniel Whittington. Just watched through all of your cocktail videos and now I'm off to see more of your videos. Great content and you guys are awesome! Love it!!
Old fashioned is one of the few cocktails I've had. They're delicious.
No doubt. It was my first ever cocktail, the bartender suggested I'd go with an AMF or just a shot of tequila like some fratboy, but I went with something you put effort into making, the outcome was satisfactory to say the least.
this drink makes my mouth water, im now just waiting to go somewhere and order one.
Love this cocktail!
I really enjoyed your Manhattan Project.
nice. Enjoy your upvote.
When this was first published on the Scam School channel, I was in. I avoid mixed drinks (usually preferring unadulterated liquors), but this one is excellent. I may not make the mai tai (too many different rums), but this I will make frequently.
yo I love these mixology episodes I use them all the time
love the content can't get enough
I want you to cover Sake, it's an underrated drink and almost no one has a proper tutorial on how to understand Sake.
I second this.
@@kuraiwolf4047 me to
Other than soda added I loved the way you made this cocktail I will try it with soda I have always just used splash of water and it is delicious.. I will be trying with soda though and I appreciate the mention of ice style because you don't want to water this drink down.. overall as a fellow tender you rocked it
Lol, I live in Wisconsin, where the old fashion is a way of life!!!!
Same
Y'all use brandy in yours, don't you?
@@ScottKorin balls in the face face in the balls
I made it with the soda water like this. I really didn't expect it to be as tasty as it was with it.
If you’re ever in Wisconsin and order it with anything but brandy you’ll get looks. And it makes us very easy to identify when we travel.
there was a guy in the background who wasn't all too happy about the filming
Haha I noticed him too, that little eye roll and sigh.
I had a friend who loved these. and I never knew why. But this makes me want to try it. Kinda
Funny all the armchair bartenders getting mad, don drapers old fashion used soda water too and quite a bit. I actually like the chintzy ones you used to get in the 60s and some dive bars still do with an obnoxiously red cherry. It’s really a different drink, much sweeter, easier to drink, it does all the work for you, it’s great.
I want to try this. I want to go around and try each kind/version.
3:33 the guy in the background, his face of envy is classic lol
I need to try this one.
I grew up on old fashioneds, usually with brandy but I love them with whiskey now. That one looks perfect #wisconsin
need to get that next time i go to the bar
Great video guys.
Trevor’s face at 1:21 just screams “omg this guy don’t even know what _ango_ is? What even”
I think I've found my new favorite drink 🍹😍
The way Trevor's eyes opened wide in shock when he heard Brian say he didn't think he'd ever had an Old Fashioned! XD
never had an old-fashioned before but you know what I think after this I just might have to go out and get one
You put that much ice in my old fashion and it's coming back to you.
Best way imo is to serve it chilled.
No ice needed but the drink is still cold
2 oz. bourbon. 1/2-3/4 oz simple simple syrup, 3 dashes of angostura bitters, 3 dashes of orange bitters, all over ice stirred until properly until diluted. Then strained over an ice sphere and garnished with an orange peel. -My perfect old fashioned
I always described the flavor of the Old Fashioned as "Christmas chat with grandpa beside a fireplace"
this channel is going to blow up
Don Draper may be the coolest guy on television, but you guys are the coolest guys on RUclips
The dude in the back at 3:33 made me laugh so hard.
Y’all rock!!!
I'm from Wisconsin, I drink the Brandy Old Fashioned. That said, I use Jero Old Fashioned mix, brandy, my grandpa will add a little vermouth, and sour soda. I'm not claiming to be a bartender, I definitely am not, but it's light, it's tasty, and I like it. I also tried using ginger ale and bourbon instead (it's cheap bourbon in an expensive bottle) and that was a different taste but still good.
the bartender looks like Brandon Rogers
lol
i drink to forget but i always remember
I dont know him, is Brandon Rogers a gay douchebag?
@@serietta4394 The only gay douchebag here is you.
Trevor looks so professional
Hey Brian and Jason! For your bumper for SquareSpace, what I'd like to see would be The Rogue's Journals; a blog of Modern Badassery for the Modern Rogue. It would be things that don't quite make the episodes, but you feel as though Rogues like us would enjoy. By the way, his splash page is amazing.
I drink whiskey so old fashioned that I just drink straight from the bottle
Mr. Ted that is the older fashioned
I drink it so old fashioned that it's just fermented barley
I drink so old fashioned that I'm just chewing on grains.
Olordrin I Drink it so old fashioned that I create the universe to made the ingredients
best video on old fashioned, trevor style it is
Not a huge whiskey or bourbon drinker, but Old Fashioned's are delicious!
you 3 should make a cocktail book
I think recipies to cocktails would be great on your web page
If you like old fashioneds give this a try. It’s my favourite recipe by far and I created it by accident. Hope you try it and enjoy
•dash of water
•5 dashes Angostura bitters
•2 tsp Cointreau or triple sec
•1 tbsp simple syrup (if you don’t ha e any or don’t know how to make it just put sugar and water in a bottle and keep adding sugar until refusal, about 1/3 sugar to 2/3 water)
•stir and add ice
•2 oz rye whiskey (I prefer Wisers Deluxe, if you’ve never bought it it’s pretty reasonably priced, $40 Canadian.
Stir again to mix and enjoy. Also side note it’s important you put no extra orange oils or peel in this drink as it will create a overpowering orange flavour, the Cointreau adds the perfect amount of flavour. Also like he said in the video hard clear ice is the best because it will melt slower. You can find at home videos on that on RUclips, using a cooler in the freezer is probably the best and easiest way. Anyway hope you give it a try and enjoy.if you like it let me know, if you hate it then forget this comment exists.
Use a Luxardo cherry, and get a little bit of the syrup in the old fashioned
I was pulling this video up again and typed in “old fashioned modern rogue.” The irony...
The guy in the background at 3:30 looked so pissed, why the fuck 😂
My personal favorite old fashioned recipe (since everyone is posting theirs) :
1 Barspoon of cinnamon syrup,
4 dashes of creole bitters,
Two ounces of rye (I like wild turkey)
A single ice cube,
Stir,
Flame an orange peel
"We need a live stage show!",
3 year later: they do a live stage show,
Man, I love when characters develop
Havent ever made an old fashioned with soda water, but I'll try it once... for science!
Is the tie and flannel a thing in Texas?
Not at all, I've never seen a tie and flannel in my 19 years of living
his take on a old fashion. keep it traditional. no soda no muddle, clean and simple.
the one I made was mean. just added more sugar and that made it a great drink
I _generally_ disagree with the addition of soda water into old-fashioned cocktails, but it's worth noting that I take a shortcut and make my own simple syrup for my OF's, so that skips any needed dilution for the sugar and bitters. I liked the use of the orange peel though.
Holy shit, i just realized something. Brian is is the Brian that Arctic Monkeys are talking about in their Brianstorm song. The lyrics go :
'Cause we can't take our eyes
Off the shirt and ties combination?
Well, see you later, innovator
And see what Brian is wearing this episode
T shirt and ties combination
Ok Martin
I'm gonna be so prepared for my 21st birthday...Now all I need is friends.
Whiskey sugar bitters shot of water. OLD FASHIONED. Adding orange and soda water is the reason they started saying make it old fashioned
Works with a good dark Dominican Rum! By the way, Trevor, you should make a video about cocktails with Rum.
I made one from what how he made it way better then what I've had at other bars
Scrape the sugar cube over the orange peel? Activate the oils?
How come you haven't done a video about a "Long Island"?
Oh how I love a well made old fashioned. But on the sweet side.
i know that most bars have a great range of whiskeys to use but if i were to make this at home, can i use jamesons whiskey?
whoever was recording the video on the squarespace website was on at 2:00 AM golly
People that say that soda water shouldn’t be in an Old Fashioned either aren’t using sugar cubes or have never went through the pain of actually muddling a dry sugar cube
I like my old fashions with an orange.
u guys are awesome :))
Looks pretty good too me
Soda water = Gets sent back
Jeff Martin I bet you wouldn’t even taste the difference
JtheBurger you haven’t had a proper old fashioned then have you ?
A classic old fashioned has bitters, some sugar and whiskey, some add ice, other don't, add a cherry and you're done. At least that's what I was taught, but then again, a whiskey sour has 100 different variants too lol
