Yoyoka has access to some of the best studios in Hokkaido, as a courtesy, if she so chooses. The thing is, Hokkaido is a winter wonderland for nearly half a year. The convenience of having a home studio, regardless of how modest, is unbeatable when you want to immediately run through a jam session or a new idea. They're home studio is fine. It's big enough to accommodate multiple musicians, 2 full drum kits, recording devices and engineering equipment.
Come on, dude. you're starting to scare me. Yoyoka's set up has had multiple cams since before YOU started watching her videos. How do you not know this, Andrew? You edit these videos you upload, don't you? Plus she even showed you the multi cam set up at the beginning of her tutorial in THIS video!!!
Also, Yoyoka has been pretty candid about this in other interviews she's done, because people ask her all the time. The average time that it takes her to learn a song is between 30 - 45 mins. Sometimes an hour and if it's really complicated, maybe a few days. But generally she's got the beat down in about 1/2 an hour.

Hi Andrew, i see that you have affiliation with drumeo. Are you doing your lessons through them or you are doing lessons in Auckland as well?
Her dad is very good at the engineering. When this was made he was helping her a lot, and she probably learned most of what she knows from him, but I imagine she does it all by herself now. Sidenote: When she was 6 yo, they had some band members practicing in her home, and Yoyoka says "I think it would sound better if you played it like this." They all looked at her, then at each other, and tried it. She was right. That's just how awesome her ear for music is. She is self taught. She was learning to read music, but has since said that she thinks if she learned, in some ways it might hinder her creativity. Her English teacher (who was also teaching her to read music) had to leave Japan because of Covid restrictions)

What I find most amazing is that a 9 year old not only understands all the technical aspects of her craft, but is able to easily explain it to adults.

I have Never been so enthused listening to a kid.. Its Not just the drumming ability that is so impeccable, but just how smart she is the knowledge she retains is just unbelievable..
She learned the rudiments of drumming at such a young age, and she practices a lot. She has recently been learning music, but you know the beat is just in her soul!

She has said that it takes her 2-3 tries for the easy songs and 5 or so to learn the more difficult tunes. She has a gift!
I suppose 5 tries *is* "much longer" than 3! 😲

@@peterbulloch4328 I think you're talking about her shooting the video, most of which are 1 take. What I was talking about, is how many times she listens to a song before she has it nailed.
She has a different drum set up now. She went to Pearl Drums (has endorsement deal) and spent a long time trying all the different drums (vid on her channel). She custom selected each piece for her kit, and also had them put her original drawing of a rabbit holding drum sticks on the Bass drum skin. They named the series after her. She also has a vid of her opening the kit piece by piece. So cute to see how excited she gets. Another vid when she recently added the green skins to her drums (which sound so awesome). I forget, maybe 3 months ago. If interested, I can provide links.
She switches them some parts out to make a different sounds too so she isn't using the Pearl Drums exclusively.

You can’t help but admire her. She has also done videos showing her tuning her drums and demonstrating the difference between different snares. I don’t think she needs to read music to play drums, but now that she has taken up guitar, bass, and keyboards, I think she is learning to read music. She obviously has a great ear for music though. Thanks Andrew, your curiosity is so relatable because the story of Yoyoka's musicianship is fascinating, maybe the more for being partially shrouded from us anglos by a language/culture barrier. It really is music all the way down. Musicians - including singers - are inherently engineers, and Yoyoka clearly knows the equipment inside and out like the seasoned professional she is.
Another in this series is '9 Snares Comparison', where she tunes in on the tonal character of each instrument and improvises around it. You really get a sense of what an organic musician she is.
Then you have to watch others like the ones with drummers BOBO and Hideo Yamaki (Yoyoka's yellow snare is name after him) to pick up some musical philosophy..
And all this savant-level apprehension without ever losing sight of what it's all about - having fun!!
If I had to name an 'ideal musician': Yoyoka Soma, no hesitation.

It’s fun because she plays the stuff she is “addicted” to. It is the magic sauce on top of her talent, showmanship, and technical expertise. It is part of the act, the mugging, cutsiness, playing air guitar with her sticks, to pump up the audience, but the act is based in truth. If she could not play music she would be dancing to these songs anyways.

I believe in a previous video, she mentioned it usually takes her 4 days or so to learn the difficult songs. She started taking drum lessons, but stopped when the pandemic hit.

I've always learned songs on the drums by simply listening to them many times. Been doing that for 15 years now. Everything is memorized! It takes a few listens to really get what the drummer is playing, and then I practice it behind the kit just to get the muscle memory going!

I think by now, she has already learnt to read music. Don't really remember what gives me that impression, but I think she did spend time to learn this stuff.
Personally, I think the scariest thing about that video series of hers is that she teaches this stuff better than many educators I know. She essentially breaks it down into simple concepts that everyone can catch, and proceeds to convey those concepts in easy-to grasp sentences and demonstrations. It's like she's been teaching for decades yet she was just NINE when she did this!!!
Listening to your questions, comments and critiques was really interesting though. It obviously comes from real experience from your end, so it's actually worth its weight. I would actually be interested in what you think about the rest of her drum course videos, but perhaps I'm alone in that curiosity. Anyone else would like to hear this too?
I think it would be great especially because they are fairly short. The early one where she is tiny teaching about rim shots is the first one to show her pedagogical prowess. Let's face it her parents are amazing and she has a gift for not only music but teaching.

Thanks for reviewing this video. I believe this video was before she started taking English and drum lessons from a guy that was teaching her to read drum notation, it's on her channel. I think in a recent interview she mentioned that she does know how to read music now.

I fully agree with you, great reaction as always by the way, on her being able to read music. It will make her an even richer musician. It also makes it easier to communicate with others I guess. Having said that it's absurd how she learns and records all those song so quicky. She is so special, but she is not alone. You might do a reaction on Alessia Cara & The Warning's new version of Enter Sandmen. From multiple locations they arranged, recorded and mixed (Dave Bendeth) the song in one week. U true accomplishment. You'll know when you'll react to it. On Yoyoka normally only great things can happen when you have such talent, as long she has the hunger herself and she grows strong enough to withstand the pressures that come with (social) media when you get older. Naomi Osaka is the latest Japanese example of how difficult it is to keep your balance, even when you are blessed with great talent. As a teacher you do not suffer from this because you're always right 🤣🤣.
She is now endorsed by many companies.

Sir Gavin has a great tour of how he mics his kit. Top and bottom skins of snare are mic’d separately with different types of capsules. Each snare mic channel has different preprocessor settings and delay on lower skin. Way over my head
Hey Andrew. You'll find this interesting. Rob Yule and I saw YOYOKA perform last week in Las Vegas at the Japanese Festival. We got a chance to talk to her and she told us a few things that shocked me. You talk about recording yourself and listening to yourself play to get a better idea of what you sound like. I don't know if she does that before she records the video, but what I found out is that she never watches the videos she actually records. Kind of like actors that never watch the movies they have made. You would think she would do that before she posts them, but I guess she just knows when she plays them that she nailed it? The other thing, was her response to a comment I made. I forget how it came up, but during the conversation, she asked "What are some of the nicknames that people call me?" I gave her 4 or 5 and when I said "The Human Metronome", she laughed, and responded, "My timing is not very good." Then Rob and I laughed. How humble is this little lady. Perfect timing and still thinks it's not good enough, or could be better. She has no clue how good she is. She has made various comments before, that she doesn't understand why everyone fusses over how great she is. Of course, you, I, and million other people know the exact answer to that!

I believe that it is more about having fun learning and playing the instrument. Add in having to learn to read it might take the enjoyment out of it. I learned to play by ear and it was realty hard to learn to read it.

@AndrewRooneyDrums I just saw an interview with her by an older Japanese man (university president) where she says she can play most songs after listening once or twice. Difficult ones take 4 or 5. She gets an image of the song in her head. Can't even imagine!

In my opinion as an electronic engineer and working in sound for stage the more mics you have the greater chances of cross talk you have .......sometimes less is more, hope you're well Andrew
I can't even record with 4 mics. Just sounds like a mess unless I get lucky :)
3 mics sounds good easily IMO
@@AndrewRooneyDrums directional / shotgun mics offer the least cross talk but take a lot of fine tuning to get sounding right but in my opinion turning the gain / sensitivity of the mics down, often sorts a lot of problems
Add a backdrop, virtual or physical, and she is anywhere in the world.
I envy what they have. A music studio, that can accommodate small bands (with their drummer also), is down the hall, in a house with NO neighbors, and has all the toys right there. Don't have to have a fancy accommodation. You can, but you don't have to. When you get home from elementary school you have no travel time to the studio.
Can you imagine her being your neighbor, in a apartment or condo? Lol….I would be over everyday with my guitar but most people would probably move…..
4:00 I know its hard to wrap your mind around it, but from what Ive heard from people who know her, YES she really DOES manage to figure out a song in 2-3 listens. It must be some sort of gift or genius, but she can pick out the sound of every drum and reproduce the riff even in complex compositions like YYZ. And yeah ... she does it in -two days- sorry ... thats out of date. NOwadays it usually takes her just a day to learn, practice and record a new song (most of her recent videos have been one take!)
In the section where she describes the mikes, she's imitating the sounds that they deliver,as she describes (the English translation isnt the best). Its actually easier to describe sounds in Japanese because there is a rich vocabulary of words to describe the sounds that things make. The mic on top picks up the high, staccatto sound which she describes as "Pa!" The side mike catches resonant "Don" sounds. while the bottom mike catches the rattling sounds of the snares which she describes as "Jarajara".

She does most of her videos in "one shot", meaning turn the three cameras on (Front view, overhead and foot cam - one for each window on screen) let them run, beginning to end, no editing. As you know, many You Tubers, cut and edit their videos to pieces, to get a perfect product. The reason this sounds like I'm talking to you like you're an idiot (which you certain are not), is because you will she people all the time saying she does it in "one take". As you know, a "take" is a try. She probably does most of them in one try, she's that good as you know. But she could take several tries of the "one shot" process. Point being is she doesn't really edit her videos, like others.

Yoyoka is a perfectionist, even though she doesn't come off as one. She is very much like John Fogerty when it comes to how her final product sounds. She listens to what she puts together before she puts it out for all to hear. She does not make the same mistake a lot of other musicians do and just assume that what they put together sounds good.

I'd venture to say that hardly any of the drummers (the rock drummers, anyway) that she's covered ever learned to read music. That is certainly the case with the classic rockers like John Bonham and Ian Paice, among others. Though she probably will learn to, she sure as heck doesn't seem to need to from what we've all seen and heard her already do.
RE: "How long". Earlier this year YOYOKA said that "Seven Days" was the most difficult song she ever had to learn. It took her 5 weeks. Now granted, she was attending school and doing homework, and doing live gigs probably once a week, and who knows what else during this time. So some of that time was probably used up practicing a bit for the gigs as well. To put that in perspective, Nani Bushnell said her most difficult song took her 3 months. I don't think her song was as difficult as YOYOKA's and I think she was putting in more time practicing. When YOYOKA was in Las Vegas, I saw her practicing 7 songs for the Japanese Festival, as well as, "The Ocean" for the live recording session the next day, and 3-4 songs for an appearance at "The Whiskey A Go Go" later that week. She played each song once. Not including setup and tear down time, we were there for 1:20. So that might give you an idea of "how long" it takes her. Also, her mom said when she did the "Official" video for "Sparkling", she had only one week from the time the song was completed until they did the professional recording in the gym.

@@bb1490 Yoyoka. Nandi has some talent, but does not inspire me like Yoyoka. I never was a drum listener before.
@@bb1490 no actually it's not. nandi gets lots of attention, which makes no sense to me, but I'm not a drummer so I wonder if I'm missing something. imo nandi isn't in the same galaxy as yoyoka.

Many mics means that they needed cause something didn't recorded! No?? What else?? Some cymbals are too dry and want dedicated mic to catch them.Bass drum wants in the most sequences 2 mics one inside the hole and one 1 m in front of bass drum and in some times maybe wants Subkick it depends what do you want to do.Snare wants 2 mics different a bit for the reason has been used. Overheads must be sensitive and wide. If you think that the minimum requirement is 9 mics as 2 for snare, 2 for over, 1 for left tom,1 for right tom,1 for each floor tom if you have 2 (14-16 ) 1 for bass drum as minimum so the 11 mics she have isn't too many! The other 2 maybe is one for hihat and one Room mic.
Pardon my ignorance, but how does reading music help one to play ? I don't get it. And nowadays, given that the world is at our fingertips and one can almost any song at any time, is reading music drifting toward obsolescence, kind of like cursive writing?

Regarding her need for better equipment... I've played good pool players who could unscrew a mop handle and win every game straight with it. . I've handed crappy guitars to good players and they make it sound like a vintage Les Paul. .Plus...when you are a kid, you don't have that part of your brain sabotaging your progress by blaming it on the quality of your gear.
