Penny rounds are a great classic look. The black on black is something I never would have thought of for tile, but it turned out looking great! Thanks for sharing!
I watched a few of your videos, and they all stand out to me. Not only because of your good designs but also because you discuss your mistakes and because you use basic tools where possible. Thanks!
You get a surprising amount of hate. I hope you are able to look at those comments constructively, if they offer some valid criticism, or ignore the simply hateful remarks you get. It takes a lot to share your passion on the internet, but almost nothing to comment. Thanks for sharing everything you do, bud 💖
Love this! Like so many others have said, I love how much you challenge yourself! You post the process, which can includes mistakes, and comments about what you would do differently in the future. It's so good to see this side of projects! Thanks for being so fun to watch!
I get that you want to keep these more accessible without investing in a lot of tools, but I think getting a wet tile saw and then cutting the edge tiles using the edge lines you made before adhering them would have made a better final result. A thicker flashing, as you mentioned would have been good. A copper flashing might have been interesting with the black. A plunge router/dremmel tied to the string might have made the circle easier. Using the metal band sticking up and doing some colored epoxy might be an interesting table design as well.
This was good timing for this project. Recently a local bar was renovating their building. The building is from the early 1900's I went down there to dig thru their dumpster 'cause I remembered they have the original white penny round tiles in the bathrooms. So, I have a bunch of them, but not nearly enough survived to tile my whole bathroom.. But, a coffee table is doable. :)
This looks VERY doable! I think I would take the time to do a "dry placement" of the tiles first. Then I could cut, move, shift wherever I want. I think I'd even do a square one too. A square and round both on the same patio...hmmm! I agree, trying different colors...wow! I bet red would be cool. Great project, thanks!
This is for inspiration, man. You can do it and learn from this "mistakes" and make it more refined. But I guess people just love to bitch about everything.

Ive been a subscriber for a while and it’s made me really love DIY and not be afraid to try things! I’m insulating my shed and lining the walls with plywood and then building a nice workbench with 3x2’s and everything is going perfectly by watching your videos 👌👍 Thank you!
Hey man I don’t know if anyone has commented this yet, but I’ve been working with tile for a while and I actually just remodeled my restroom and used penny tile in the shower niche! But if you use this product called speed set it dries in 3 hours and ready to grout in 4 hours I believe! It is great for jobs that you know you can finished in one day !
I have a piece of plywood I’ve been wondering what to do with and this is perfect. I’m thinking a black on black top like yours but with a bright neon orange edge would look awesome.
Another interesting thing could be - black penny tiles, and then get white grout and mix up a few different rainbow colors with little batches of the main quantity. You'd have to be careful about the colors mixing, but it could be pretty interesting to have the grout "pop".
@@ModernBuilds Yeah, that would be sweet. Some other extreme ideas: I wonder if you could use some kind of additive that made the grout shine in a blacklight, or adding some of that glow in the dark powder to the grout.
I've incorporated mosaic patterns in some of my projects before and the best way to get a smooth flush tiled edge is to use tile pincers which can be used as the adhesive/grout dries. It's fairly easy to do and doesn't take that much time. If you use a power tool, wait till it's cured and fully dry and clamp it down to minimise movement and cut it with straight passes until it forms a curve, similarly how a circle could be can be cut on a bandsaw if you're less confident than following the line. Overall it looks good.
I really like this A LOT, but there is only one minor change I would have made, and it wouldn't even change the looks of your table at all. I would have painted the underside of the table black, not only to make it blend in, should there ever be a need to look at the underside of the table, but more importantly, to seal and protect the wood. GREAT PROJECT!!!!!!
Quick set Thin-set hardens way faster depending and it can be for outside (lasts really long). Also, you could get chemical drying thin-set instead of air-drying type so it will dry even covered in grout if its still wet. Doing the tittle things really helps with tile.
Really like the look of this. Think you could get a similar look, with less work, using penny dot flooring. Would just need to stick it on and cut off the edge.
Hi Mike, you always do such great videos and this is another! The issue that you had with cutting the tile at the edge is a valuable lesson to present. That black grout almost looks slate-like where it's wider, so it might have been good to remove a few more of the penny tiles all the way around. I think if I were to recreate this, I'd probably make the table shape a hexagon though. Looking forward to more of your videos. TFS
Hey Mike, I like the coffee table and I agree about the all-white table. Let me ask a question concerning the plywood. Would it help the project to paint the plywood whatever color your tile will be before laying the tile? Then there is less likely any light-colored specks showing through. God Bless my friend.
No, because there shouldn't be any gaps in the grout if you've done it properly. Paint would also weaken the adhesive strength between the tile and the wood
Hey mike! I really miss your furniture builds. Your channel is one of my first favorite channels when i started to love diy woodworking. More power to you bro and thanks for being an inspiration. God bless. Happy 4th of July.
This is awesome Mike, I love penny tiles, and was going to use them on a mosaic sign recently. One tip, if you happen to have a Floor & Decor store near you, you can probably get the penny tiles for cheaper (I think I paid less than $4 per 12x12 tile). Hope that helps you save some cash next time!
Awesome look, is having the tile damp or wet prior to grouting beneficial to cleaning the grout up later? If not can you please give me more information?
Make that circle cut with a router on the end of a board with the other end on a pivot pin in the center of your material. You wasted a ton of time and got an imperfect shape.
I think a couple of reasons. First I have used that construction adhesive and it starts drying very fast so if he put all of it on and then laid the tiles down it would probably not have adhered to the tiles before drying. Also it comes in a tube so how would one trowl it all on? Squeezing it all out and then spreading it around with a trowl seems like it takes more time than just squeezing it on the back of the tiles. I also think it is easier to see how much you are working with if you are used to squeezing it out since it takes a different amount of regular adhesive than it takes tile mortar to get something to adhere. Squeezing it out on the tile seems way easier and faster than trying to trowl it on.
He even said in the video, he only wanted it on tbe tiles not in the gaps as it would show through, trowelling would end up with it filling between all the tiles

Hi Mike
Would the grout crack in time with the expansion and contraction of the plywood?
Thanks
Plywood doesn’t suffer from that as each layer is laid out with grain perpendicular to the other. If you look at the end grain you can tell.
For a circular cut like that, could you just attach your jig saw to a (strong enough) string, pull it taut then make the cut..?

The fusion pro grout recommends it.. I think it helps it spread easier or just not stick too fast, but you don't need to do it with typical grout
