Next time, try eyeing dropping the canvas instead of using directly off the palette to make sure your colors are the same. also try a mix of random colors instead of a specific palette bc that’s too specific. like in the first one, you had a lot of neutral tones and one blue color. the flexibility was low. if it’s more random, the chances of the coherency of the colors will be higher.
@@lilyofluck371 i mean it helps it all look coherent. like the shadows will be the same and the highlights will be the same so its not like rainbow barf yk
My sister and I just did this together. But instead of pre-picking a pallette and then getting confused at ourselves, we picked each other's color palettes and handed it over with the ipads already set in grayscale mode. XD it didn't turn out that terrible, but I ended up making Gamora if she were an ogre instead. She's still working on hers
"You can have a good painting with bad colors and accurate values but you cannot have a good painting with good colors and inaccurate values" -Sam 2022
For years I used exclusively ballpoint pen to draw and it helped me tremendously when learning to draw shadows. I struggle with colors when painting but my values are pretty accurate 😅
Only now i got it why i love how you work. You do not use pressure sensitivity on the SIZE of the brushes! and i love it! This helps understand that even without pressure sensitivity, you can express yourself through art even on your phone, or tablet.
I also start drawing in grayscale when I learn that you could actually draw portraits. Learning first values set me off to a good start. Im working with my colors and its gettin there
Even though I use ipad, my school art teacher told us to colour in with pencil instead of colouring pencils one time so that we can see where the shades are. I think colouring in black & white is really good because it’s less stressful when you need to think of what colours need to be added & where.
Dude this once and I did a bird. The colors I got were red, a bright green, dark blue, grey, and various shades of purple. Trust me Sam, yours turned out so tame and nice to look at. I love it! Mine looks like a clown threw up on the screen. 😭😭😭
I have bedtime turned on my phone, which means that between 23:00 and 08:00 my phone goes in greyscale because I should be sleeping. One time though, I wouldn't have any classes the next day, so I kept drawing. It wasn't the same as this challenge since I was still using the color wheel, which meant I had an idea about the colors I was using. It really forced me to think about my values though! I usually only think about values if I'm painting a night scene, so this change was really interesting... In the morning, I just ajusted the saturation on a couple of things since my drawings are pretty saturated and I didn't want that piece to feel weird. I'll definately try this challenge properly!!
Pro tip: if you find grey scale art boring, just pick a single colour and make a value scale with that. You still learn the same things but it’s nicer to look at
creative people are often gifted and interested and many different things which can cause the person to be pulled in multiple directions and make it extremely difficult to focus on just one or two things like art. i'm one of these people. i'm an artist but i'm also interested in computer programming, videography, inventing, 3D printing, licensing products, music, etc. i almost never sit down and make any art even though that is probably the one thing i am best at. the advice i would give someone like me is you either need to become hyper organized and hyper disciplined if you want to pursue multiple endeavors simultaneously (even going so far as to hire an assistant or coach to keep you on track) or you need to make the hard choice that you are just not going to be able to do it all and start deleting interests from your life which might be very painful
Marco Bucci has a video like that as well (might be that this is where the idea for this art challenge originates from). It's called "Are your colors boring? Try this digital painting exercise!" Go, check it out! Marco is awesome.
TIP: You can quickly toggle the greyscale setting by triple-clicking the power button ( after enabling it in settings / accessibility shortcut / color filters ) I use it all the time! 😉
Gotta say I always enjoyed drawing in pencil or charcoal, but haven't done it in ages. This definitely makes me wanna play around with grayscale again.
The first reveal of the 2nd image gave me strong Audrey Hepburn vibes in black n white movies, but then when you added some color to it, I got the re-colored movies vibe.
I'm not doing grayscale for painting, but I use grayscale technique to create and check values I color, because I was inspired by a character that colored with different hue but somehow the value makes sense.
You don't need to use Settings to turn your canvas to grayscale. Just have a layer at the top filled with white and turned to Color Blending Mode. I use this trick to check values when I paint in Procreate.
I tried drawing in grayscale in traditional art 😂 I just drew with gray and used a grey scaled colour pallet. I wanted it to look like it was a older looking picture. I don't know how well I did with it.
Hello you could do some of these changes in future 1. Drawing your mbti as your oc add details that this mbti is known for and add details people don't know about this mbti 2. Draw you fav song as a painting 3. Drawing your fav drink as a an oc
Sam, just so you now in procreate they have a cool thing we’re in the color picker tab and you go to create a palate you can actually import a image in, and you get the colors form your image. Just wanted you to now do if you do this again you can use that if you want :D

Sams editor has such a good sense of humour😭
That's what I was going to say!
i really love this challenge, but i kinda wanna see sam use a color palette that he hasnt seen, itll be even more of a surprise.
Maybe a more neon punk vibe like bright pinks, yellows cyans y'know the drill
This is the comment i was looking for
yes, like bright purples and yellows
Same
He’s back at it again giving us tips yet still roasting us. Beautiful.
i did something like this before. it was so satisfying seeing all the colors i wouldn’t have put together
Watching Sam suffer is the best
Satifaction at its finest 😂

This editor + Sam = killing combination🤣👍 love u guys, thx for good mood and atmosphere as always
@OfficialSamArtOnNicegramshush bot
Sam constantly complimenting his own art gives me *life*
id love to see this again with even more random colours and then mess them together. then it's really a big gamble lol
Living for Sam's reactions
Sam never disappoints
Quick tip- you can map a shortcut for the color filters thing to triple click side button.
Settings> accessibility >accessibility shortcut

Yes exactly!
i agree T-T
I think color picking the canvas kind of defeats the purpose lol, but art is art ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I love how he gives so many tips on how to make the art more realistic
Sams the perfect balance of entertainment and education - also shout out to the editor :D

if there is no GRASS and SKULL next to Sam, he doesn't roast us.

watching sam paint is like a relaxing spa for my brain 🧠 🧘
Sam's humor as a separate art form

Man, Sam is literally so talented. He does all this work just to impress his viewers, we really appreciate you Sam!
The second one almost reminded me of this famous movie star Audrey Hepburn, and I LOVE IT! 💖✨
I actually really love how that first one came out, the orange-y skin tone against the turquoise is *chef's kiss*

As an artist that has been comfortable with black and white charcoal but always wanted to paint, this sounds like the process for me!

Sam you’re a great teacher and the entertainment of your struggling is just perfect
I remember trying this back a few months ago by doing realistic people! It turned out so cool!
This is always a challenge that I've been wanting to do and seeing Sam do it is !! Only problem is I don't know how to turn my phone to greyscale
I'm sure you could google how to do it for your phone! It's probably either in accessibility settings or something like a "night mode" or "sleep mode"
@@BlueSodaPop_ I found out how to do it, it was under night mode :)

You should do a vid on you sketching one of you characters!!! I’ve been asking for 3 months😂
