    The Marshall artiste 2048
    ( in head version and theres a combo version too, Artiste 2040) might have been the first to feature a reverb tank, 71-78
    Marshall Artiste, not to be confused with Marshall artist, which is another Marshall amp, also not to be confused with a "Martial artist" which is a form of fighting.. 😂
    This amp you just featured, I am super suprised I have never heard about it before! A rare bird for SURE! Great video mate! 😊

      I have a Marshall Artisté 2060 , 50 watt head with the Hammond reverb (stock) full of rich tones a wonderful amp. Glad you modified this one as l have played through a 2959 piqued with interest as back then to find a Marshall with stock reverb was a surprise. Sorry to say l was disappointed with the amp and felt the golden years of Marshall had passed with the last killer amp the Master Volume 2204.

    Neat amp, Jason. Haven't had one of these across the bench, but know a little about and very cool.
    Online suggests made 1978 thru 1980 and only 150-200 made, so yes very rare. The one you have has the serial number on FRONT, which mean 1979 or early 1980, that's the ONLY time they did this, but was you can see by the lettering and tag on top of the chassis, it's a 1980 variant, so probably early 80.
    From research, these were all originally for the Canadian market.
    As you indicated, it only has TWO taps and they are 4 and 8 ohm (no 16 ohm tap)!! That stinks.
    From the Marshall forum, there was a 1980 sold on eBay not too long around Apr 2017 and had the following transformer set (the main T4145 is very typical and we'll have to see what the voltages are on this one.
    Mains - Dagnall T4145
    Output - Dagnall C2723
    Reverb - Dagnall C2659
    Choke - Drake T100 1471-263
    The 4210 I worked on for Keith "Rock" Holstein from the Crazy Babies Ozzy Tribute band has reverb in it and this C2659 in it, so Marshall looks like used it common on anything with a reverb in it.
    The amp sounds quiet from your clips, which I would expect as not high gain. I DESPISE all of the damn fuses in the thing. The reverb needs work. There is no mixing of the dry to wet tone and there is too much dry in my opinion. A good mod would be to work on the reverb section and also add a wetdry mix pot rather than fixed amount.
    Look forward to your next video. I finally got around to picking up a Shure SM7B boom, so may be doing some POD Casts or whatnot in the future! Retirement is not to far off in the future!! :)

    Extra fuse board was also used in scandinavian export models. I have a JMP 2203 -82 (yes very late JMP) that has the same fuse board. No PCB mounted pots though but the same red Iskra coupling caps, same Daly smoothing caps (replaced long time ago), same head cabinet, same front and back panels and only 4 and 8 ohm outputs. I bought the amp second hand in the early 90's for 150 €.

    Awesome video! What a cool amp - I was thinking that the first Marshall with Reverb were the JCM800 channel switchers, I never knew about this model. I appreciate the schematic walkthrough from someone really knowledgeable like you, and then doubly cool to see the internals in the same video. Cheers!

    Really enjoy your videos man. I've still got a lot to learn about amp building. A couple things I'm wondering about (and would love to hear you talk about) is optimal grounding schemes for marshalls and what causes and fixes switch pop in the fx loop of some marshalls and the relationship to MV placement. For instance, I built a ceriatone ahd 100 and all my true bypass pedals have an obnoxious switch pop. Any recs to fix would be awesome.

    What a cool find, never heard of that model. A little bummed it’s no longer original but you can’t argue with the sound of it afterward, that thing sounds amazing. The reverb…interesting circuit but I’ll pass. Thanks for sharing this very rare “Marsnall” with us!

  • @eds4754
    @eds4754 5 месяцев назад

    with the fuse board and transformer taps, I think Marshall just did that for all of the custom ordered stuff so they wouldn’t have to make seperate canadian versions. It was the same on my JMP2144, 2150 etc.
    The 2150 is the same as this I think, just in combo and without the reverb. The Park 1210 is like a cascaded gain version of it without reverb

    If i was the Owner, I would say "Do what You do best, Hook Me Up! Make it great!" Plug'n The Knaggs in was good.
    I will never deal with a reverb tank as long as live ever again, reverb pedals are just too frick'n good….

    Hey Jason, I am wondering if you could answer this question? I am thinking of getting a Marshall JCM800X reissue seeing how Marshall greatly reduced the price here in the U.S. ($3,500 down to $2,199). Question: given the recent changes to the transformers, do you think the 800x is still a worthwhile purchase at this new price? Also, are the transformers reliable & better than say cheap Ceriatone transformers (Ceriatone is another option for me)? Thank you, great content btw! I'll be sure to like & subscribe.

    • @HeadfirstAmps
      @HeadfirstAmps  5 месяцев назад

      The new price is more acceptable I guess, but there is no evidence in my view to say that the Ceriatone transformers (made by www.promitheusaudio.com/transformers.html) are poor or cheap. I’ve never had a Ceriatone PT ‘ring’ or whine like these new Vietnamese transformers do. If you get a 2203x, make sure you try it out in store. You want to check that it doesn’t have that bloody awful high pitched ringing.

      Cutting the amount of bass going into the circuit, reducing plate voltage a tad which helps reduce that splash that sometimes happens, Brad and Lyle are the reverb circuit gurus 😉 Reverb on 1 is usually too wet for us 😂

    Very similar construction to my 4140 club and country which was originally a 4x10 combo.
    The amp developed many problems so i rebuilt as a turret board 2203 head. As it had extra preamp sockets for the reverb and "banjo" input i put in a hard switchable blues breaker tremolo.
    Cathode follower driven tone stack is the heart of the marshall sound imho.
    Your vid brought back the memories of wrongness of both the reverb and tones and reminded me of how good a stock 2203 is.

    Looks like one EL34 is older OR had been running hot as the color has turned from the red to a brownish color. 3 out of the 4 valves look matched but the hot one I can see no sticker on it at all. Could have just come off OR it's not a matched quad, have no clue.

    If both reverb driver and recovery circuit are done using only one same double triode, it is a very poor man's reverb indeed. You need a 12AT7 or 12AU7 both triodes paralleled to really kick the tank. I usually use double triode cascade in recovery circuit as well in my amps.

    That is the most horrible reverb I've ever heard( I'm glad my old Marshall didn't have one, if this is what they're like).
