I am surprised more pros like you and Alex don't do this more often. The power and capability of modern FREE circuit design tools (schematic, components, PCB board design, validation) makes that part straightforward for those with core design expertise. But now every firm making PCBs accepts Gerber formatted PCB design files and can produce boards for $5 to $10 a piece. With that kind of pricing and 1 week turnaround, it is economical to prototype your own design thru a few iterations, then after nailing down the design you can order a few extras for spares. And you can save the CAD design and Gerber export and use that to get a board made 20 years from now.

A few comments/questions on a technical nature: 1. How loud of a signal is necessary in order to drive the first gain stage into audible non-linear territory? 2. When you changed the cathode resistor on the first gain stage but left the bypass capacitor the same you increased bottom end amplification (down to 87Hz vs 285Hz, based on crude calculations). 3. When you added the 22uF fat cap you increased gain to a stage that you kept biased as hot. IME, this runs counter to any goal of reducing fuzziness. What do I hear? I hear the increased low end in the voicing and a fuller sound overall and find it to be an improvement. I don’t hear any issue with fuzziness in either clip though you didn’t do any heavy riffing on the bass strings at the 12th fret with the neck pickup to tease out any potential problems. This was also helped by the fact that you weren’t using the normal channel which has the 330uF cathode bypass and 22nF coupling capacitor; not to mention that it doesn’t have the bright and treble peaking caps to help mask a fuzzy bottom end. Personally, I’d go with 1.2k at the cathode of V2A (still bypassed with 22uF) and lower the V2B cathode resistor to 47k; but that depends on whether clipping at the cathode follower is an issue and whether any noticeable compression that may result is desirable. I definitely endorse lowering the bypass frequency at the first gain stage of the high treble channel unless blending is your thing, in which case I think Marshall’s configuration of the normal channel also deserves some scrutiny. I love your videos and all the wonderful things you do for the DIY community. You are a great source of inspiration!

I had a DSL 40C that I had laying around that I was going to sell. My other amps are a Bogner Ecstasy 101B, a Fender 6G3 Deluxe I built and a ‘65 Deluxe Reverb that I gutted and handwired. I think I’m going to keep the DSL with the rest of the stable. Sounds much better with these mods! Thanks for sharing!

Excellent work and fantastic idea. I will again suggest a "highly detailed" how to solder video. A video showing ALL the proper gear, how to avoid overheating joints and how to avoid cold joints. A video showing that you CANNOT use a solder pencil, you must use a proper regulated solder station with an excellent thermostat. What type of solder to use and what to avoid. How to use a vacuum solder removal tool and how to use wick to remove solder. Just my suggestion. Every amp builder thinks that "everyone has an ability to solder" and "soldering is not that hard." I think it is time for pedal companies and DIY amp companies to be honest and admit that soldering is a distinct skill set. Please do a detailed video. Thanks-----Ben

The only thing missing is a decal with the number '8' that you can put in front of the number 20 so the logo that reads Origin 20 reads Origin 820, 😇

Great work. So many guys out there want to mod these amps for more gain and they end up sounding pants after the mod. They are so good stock, why change a good thing. I think even the best high gain mods with these are always a compromise, and you lose something. Keep up the good work.

lol build quality notwithstanding, the MAVs sounded better. More "Marshall" I would honestly get a Hammond or Heyboer for a Marshall iron. Mercury seems like great folks and all, but price/performance-wise I won't be looking at their offerings for Marshalls. Maybe 5150s and the like.

MARSHALL stopped using Dagnall in the early 2000's because they were making transformers that caught fire!!!
