    If you have any clothes that are stained or ripped don't throw them away! H&M actually has a bin for unwanted clothes from any brand in any condition. Any of it that can't be donated they recycle the fibers into new clothes.

      +LipstickandRomance Goodwill does the same thing regarding clothes that aren't in good enough condition to resell. It is good to know that H&M does the same.

    I just finished reading the book and I really loved it - I ended up getting rid of about 2/3 of my wardrobe, and I realized that I just didn't really enjoy dressing the way I did, which inspired me to obtain a much cleaner, roomier closet, but also a better sense of how I wish to present myself. :) I took so much stuff to Goodwill too! Thanks for sharing this, it was great to see how you've put this into action!

    The konmari method is great it helped me get rid of a lot of stuff and reorganize my life. A lot of clutter can really hold you back from being as happy as you could be. It also makes room for newer better things.

    I just finished reading the book this week and started my sorting. I have a pretty large home so I am doing the sort a room at a time per category, of course. I know she says to go by categories and do your WHOLE house but it's too overwhelming to take all that on at once.I don't want to get discouraged and give up before I start. I love the idea of only keeping items that spark joy. Wish me luck!

      Marie Kondo says "do it all at once", but she means the category you're currently working on--certainly not the entire house. You will make it and be so happy!

    I loved the book too. I've been lazy lately about keeping it up, but I have been doing the folding consistently, which has been awesome. I love that I can see everything neatly in the drawer even if it's stuffed full. A simple thing, but definitely life changing. Looking forward to more in this series! :)

    • @AshleysConsciousLife
      @AshleysConsciousLife  8 лет назад +1

      +Megan F Glad to hear you can relate to the benefits of the folding method too! I've noticed that I'm more aware of if the clothes need to be donated or tossed this way as well, especially for my girls' clothes. There were so many things I missed before because I would just toss them into a drawer and then when they put it on I would be like, "Where did that stain/mark/hole come from?" Now I catch them more since I have to spend the time folding them, not always the most fun thing to do, but so worth it. Thanks for sharing! ( :

    • @sandraweinhardt9203

      I adore the folding, and it takes a split second to do each item. Everything is visible in my drawers or baskets or shelves. It is calming to do the folding, sort of like origami!

    I suggest somewhere other than Goodwill. There are many other charities that pay their owners a LOT LESS and spend a lot more in actual charity giving. PLUS pay their employees more. Our local Boys and Girls Club, that was financed by our town and donations from people here, has a thrift shop and the profits go to the club. Most people who work there are volunteers who get no pay. Or donate some things to your local library which hold sales, not just of books, who use the profits for more services. going to them. Just ask them what they will take. Ours will take old VHS, music tapes, and CDs; a lot of people still have old equipment and will buy them. And there is also the local Humane Societies that use the funds for the animals from the local community. NOT the national; they spend too much money paying the higher ups and not much on animals. Unfortunately most well known charities are not very charitable. You can find the information online, if you are not sure where the funds will end up.

      i agree with looking for other places to donate as well were the items can be used directly to whom it goes to, i know of someone who was in management for goodwill and was told a very large portion of money earned at goodwill goes to pay employeees. and the goodwill prices yes are cheaper than regular dept stores . but the goodwill is not so cheap , smaller thrift stores are cheaper.

    Thank you Ashley, that was a very well articulated description of Komari's book which will save me time from having to read it, p!us you inspired me to get more motivated and focused on my own deep cleaning. As a working mom as well with no free time sometimes it feels impossible but you remind us to take it in chunks and do the best we can, and seeing how relieved and relaxed you seem is a reminder how worth it it is. It is hard to avoid the fatigue, distractions, paralysis analysis and excuses that family won't be supportive but a happy, less stressed mom means a happy family! Thanks for your positive example!

    Great video. I just read KonMari's book and was looking for someone who followed the instructions. So many people modify the method in a way that defeats the purpose. This is a great video! Just wanted to let you know, that damaged clothing (stained, ripped, etc) is often accepted at the Salvation Army or Goodwill. They actually recycle "bad" clothing. A truck picks it up and take them to a recycling center. You have to call ahead to find out if a specific location does or not, but definitely worth finding out!

    Good video!
    I used the KonMari Method last year. I had tons of old stuff, that I was going to sell, but that never happened. With the KonMari Method - asking mysefl, if I wanted to keep the item - I was able to get rid of a lot of things. I donated nearly everything that I was going to sell. I never regret it. And I am so happy with less stuff!

    Thank you for sharing this video! I just recently did the entire tidying up order by Marie Condo. It is so refreshing to let go of things I held on to for no particular reason.. I believe we just needed the "permission" to give up things that didn't "spark joy." It is so freeing and uplifting in a way. I hope after this deep cleanse of not only my home, but my mind because all those negative distractions of things in my house are gone, I can work on my work more efficiently and make a difference. I'm so happy the Konmari method is working for you, and I hope you are blessed by this discovery also.

    my girlfriend bought a similar book a while ago, and over a couple of weeks we did have a major decluttering. Really surprising just how much stuff we actually had, we even found stuff that we thought we'd lost. We threw out so much rubbish, I shredded three bags of paper alone - girlfriend found loads of her old diaries which she put on the bonfire. I tend to be a bit of a hoarder so at first it was a bit hard but soon did find myself throwing out a lot of stuff. We've probably still got more to do but the house is looking a lot better. It was hard work but rewarding at the end of the day to drive to the rubbish dump to toss everything away

    Great video! This theory/book has changed my life. I started with listening to Konmari on RUclips during the last week of December 2015. I purchased to book in mid January. In my dreams my house would be completely organized by the new year. That is unrealistic based on this approach. I literally touched everything in my home, asked myself in many cases if it "sparked joy". After awhile I simply asked myself if I loved it.Got rid of a lot & found a home for 99% of everything else. As of last week, I am "done"! There are some things I'm still going to do like buy a digital frame & scan the photos that spark joy. I threw out so many & as you said, it was freeing. A lot of the people in them I didn't remember or no longer associate with. I also want to take a deep breath & get rid of even more paperwork. Some old habits die hard. I love what its done for my life. Thanks for sharing.

    I really enjoyed your video. You did such a good job explaining your experience with the Kon Marie method.
    I myself got through the clothing quickly and easily but stalled out when it came to the books I think. I had hundreds (and donated hundreds) but I still have around 75 books. Some are sentimental but most are non-fiction books that I definitely use several times a year....and they ALL spark joy for me.
    I still have a lot of work to do with the rest of the categories. Wish me luck!

      +kim Catfish He he, must have read your mind! Congrats on your baby. I know that was a tricky time for me after by girls were born of trying to figure out what in the world to do with all their clothes/gadgets/supplies. If I don't have a system for something it makes me feel more stressed out (hence why I don't travel very much!). This book really helped me see how many systems I still didn't have for my girls and they are 4 and 2. Best of luck with the method!

    For me it’s not an issue throwing things away. Growing up in a dysfunctional family people have thrown away everything from needed things to diplomas. My problem now that I’ve been back in my home town and my mother lives with me she’s a major clutter-er and those bad habits rub off on me. Getting rid of her things is the problem. I know she’ll hate it but I feel like I just need to start going through stuff and shipping it off without we realizing it until its gone

    Also I did it slightly different which maybe why it took me longer. I mostly worked in categories but then would start to organize before I moved to the next one. I didn't initially know that you were supposed to do that & by the time I did I kept pressing forward that way. In doing so, every area I organized has remained pristine since beginning at the end of December. Its so easy now for us to keep our home clean. Also did the garage. The only room left is the kids. We will tackle that during spring break. There's won't be as lengthy. Thanks again.

    Yes, it's a great book. One note on the clothing. Check with the places you want to donate as they may get cash for the discardable fabrics that can't be resold. Where I live, they take everything - stained, torn, tattered and reusable to sell. They pallet up the truly unsalable clothing and sell it to make a little cash to support operations. So that way, you won't have to worry about washing and extra sorting....let them make the decisions and go from there, assuming your places function the same way.

    Read 1st book and her second book "Spark Joy" takes a bit of time but I gave away 12 bags clothes, 150 books and over 200 magazines, filled household recycling bin with paperwork by emptying a 4 draw filing cabinet as I had two full ones at the start. So got rest of komono to do now which is described better in the second book and also has more detail on how to fold clothes. So still on the journey but will see it through to the end

    Ashley,
    Thank you for showing your paper system. I have just completed the KonMari CLOTHING & BOOKS categories and was wondering how I will tackle all papers.
    Currently, in addition to boxes of old papers in pendaflex files, I have about 8 colored folders with pockets. I use them to organize papers for currently important topics. such as health insurance, a current legal issue, a folder for paper to scan and shred, and other projects or issues. but it's still difficult to find what I need since they are all in a stack on my desk along with new papers that have not been dealt with yet.
    I would like to see a video on how you declutter and organize papers.
    I suppose I'm a little OCD also. :^)

      ***** lol if you see my channel you will see we are aiming on living out of 4 carry-ons for the 4 of us in about 1 year 6 months from now :) We downsized from a 10 acre property, large house, large workshop, shed, etc...LOTS of stuff...moved to Florida 7 years ago and downsized BIG time. But even with all the downsizing we have sooo much stuff and if we plan on traveling the world we cannot keep MOST of what we have...so every day we have been either packing what we MUST have like photos(that gives me "joy") ...those things will go into a POD stored somewhere...and donating most everything else. Some things made it to the consignment shop and some into the garbage. I never heard of Konmari until now and just ordered her book from Library. I watched her on RUclips today as well. She is too cute. I've never heard of this approach. I love it. If it brings me joy I then will keep it. You did a super job of explaining what Konmari is. I'm very impressed :) Thank you!

    I think you made a great point about the storing stuff in your basement and getting tired of the special folding style. There is a lot of collateral damage that goes on when one does the konmari method. I'm trying to address that issue in my new KonMari video.
    Also - the special folding technique takes forever! I really doubt full time working adults/ students will have the time and will power to do it. I personally don't do it that way - but I do stack my clothes in a vertical fashion konmari style.
    What I'm trying to do is encourage people to distill the "principles" of the KonMari method and the "spirit" of the art form - instead of following the techniques of the konmari method to a T. :)

    For clothes that are ripped, torn, and/or stained you can still donate those items to Goodwill in a marked bag. Goodwill shreds these items for filler and other projects for inpoverished countries. This way those items do not end up in a landfill.

    I'm listening to it now in my car driving to and from work.... I am a hoarder from way back....my father and grandmother were too... I will be starting with the pantry /food this weekend. I have decided on that as I have also put on so much weight and by emptying and throwing out foods that have been sitting at the back of the pantry and fridge - that have probably expired - then I can have a clear mind to start losing weight as well .. my next tackle will be my clothes - with the amount of weight I have put on I cannot fit into 9/10ths of my clothes.....by the time I realistically lose the weight, these clothes will no longer be fashionable

      +AshleysGreenLife hi Ashley. I started over the weekend. As I mentioned. Bi started in my pantry. I managed to rid of 7 bags of 'food' that had been sitting in my pantry. ✔️ so that is ticked off my list as done. Love the feeling. Next is the linen closet that I will be turning into a storage closet and keeping the bed linen in each bedroom and all the towels in the bathrooms. After that I start the monumental task of my art studio, then clothes, then books, then papers.

    I have a comment about storing ; important documents such as contracts and warranties (all other papers such as paid bills need to be discarded) should be all in one see-through simple plastic folder, standing up in a rack or a stand. That's it. No need for a filing system. It's great that you've made extra effort, but I just want to point out that it is in fact extra effort, not something everyone needs to do if they follow KonMari.

    I thought everyone would keep like things together. Knickers in the knicker drawer, t shirts in another drawer, jumpers in another drawer. When it's summer I put my winter things away and get my summer clothes out to replace them and vice versa. Winter coats are washed or dry cleaned and put away. My books on their shelves are roughly categorised. Sewing books together, cookery books together etc. My house isn't all that tidy but I try to keep it organised, otherwise how can you every find things. I have kept some clothes that were too small, for years, I lost weight and I don't have to buy so many new ones. I gave my others away to a charity shop or trashed them. and I'd never heard of the konmari system until today.

    I enjoyed your video! I have both of Marie Kondo's books and I'm going to start working on my clothes today. It's very hard to not just start with our living room, because that is the first room that is seen when people enter our house and it has a lot of clutter right now due to things that were moved in there from our master bedroom when we had a leak in the ceiling. But, I'm going to try the clothes first, as she suggests. I'd like your opinion on a couple of the things that bothers me about her book which is that she suggests using paper boxes, like shoe boxes for storage instead of buying plastic or other containers. I feel that paper containers attract silverfish and other bugs, (I had to throw out some little boxes I had in my closet drawers because they were partially eaten by silverfish)! Also, regarding the clothes that she stands up versus lying flat, don't they fall over as clothes are removed to be worn? Thank you!

      +Carol Janssen Best of luck on your tidying journey! As for the shoe boxes, you can use small plastic containers too just without lids. And as for the clothes they slightly fall down but not much. It hasn't been a problem for me. ( :

      What I really found inspiring was Clutterbug's video on the twelve days of Christmas decluttering. Maybe show it to them so they become inspired too?Or in addition, perhaps you can further inspire them now by offering to help them go though stuff? Sort of planning for when you get your own place type of excuse? I know that if my children had helped me do that, just a little at a time, I would have had some momentum going on before long. Instead, they waited until the moving van was in the driveway before getting involved. It's then that I found out that they could use this or that item, or always really loved something. In actual fact, I was keeping a lot of stuff for them.

      +MakeupMagic06 Wow, thanks for your kind words! Sometimes I feel more inspired when I see real people do it, not just read about it in a book. Yeah I didn't have time to touch on the make up, lotion and pens...she keeps most of those with the "miscellaneous category" and I just treated them the same as the other categories by dumping all the items (of similar nature- all the lotion, all the pens, etc.) out on the floor, discarding the ones I didn't want or found someone to give them to if I knew they would want them, and then just stored the rest. Great video! Made me curious about the Konmari Method, I hadn't heard of it yet. Just a question, is this method very green? When you said that you threw away a doormat and bought another one that sparked joy, it didn't sound very green to me. I don't mean this as criticism, I'm just curious! I'm into minimalism myself, so that's why I wonder :)

    • @AshleysConsciousLife
      @AshleysConsciousLife  8 лет назад +3

      +Simplify My Life I suppose the method is green if you want it to be. As you saw in the video, most of the things I discarded I donated to Goodwill, but something like a dirty doormat wouldn't be accepted by Goodwill so I was forced to choose to keep something dirty, old and ratty or throw it away and trade up to something more useful. So I suppose in this example it doesn't seem green, but as a whole, my house feels greener after doing all the tidying because I cleared clutter and have a more organized space.

    • @annesmeets9304
      @annesmeets9304 8 лет назад +1

      +AshleysGreenLife That explains a lot, thank you!

    • @megan2176
      @megan2176 8 лет назад +2

      +Simplify My Life I struggle with this too. I'm passionate about minimalism and being green, but sometimes they conflict with one another. I want to keep my home clear and clutter free, but old stained or broken stuff has to go "somewhere" and I find it really hard to toss things in the trash, so stuff starts to pile up. This is especially true with clothing - how many I-used-to-be-a-stained-shirt rags do I really need?!! It can be a bit of a tricky cycle, but I'm trying my best. :) Our city used to have a March of Dimes thrift store that had a "baler", which made big square bales of clothing and sold them to car manufacturers and other companies who recycled the fibers into new cloth (I think??). Anyway, it was such a nice thing to be able to get rid of old socks or stained stuff and know that it wasn't going straight to the landfill. I wish options like this were more widely available. Sigh. :)

    • @annesmeets9304
      @annesmeets9304 8 лет назад

      Megan F Yes it can be hard to get rid of your stuff in a green way! I always feel guilty when I have to throw something away, even though I always try to look for a better option. In my city there are several fashion stores that collect old clothing to be recycled :)

    • @projectlifecoach7544
      @projectlifecoach7544 8 лет назад +4

      Personally. I think this method is VERY green. :) And this is the reason why I think so...
      It may sound wasteful when you throw things away that you don't like - but that is the harsh reality. Upon facing this harsh reality - I started to be very cautious and careful whenever I buy new items. I made sure I really needed something, and it really sparked joy before I introduced new items into my life. Short to say... throwing things away today.. cut down my long term consumption by a lot.
      It's a short term sacrifice to realize how much we consume. And when we consume less - isn't that more green?

      Some people (esp. many women) have multiple purses. The purpose of emptying it is that you are always aware of what's in your purse, and don't end up with duplicates or clutter in different bags. She also says in her book that she sometimes just leaves it if she knows she'll use the same purse again.

      ***** I guess I am boring and usually use the same purse for the season, unless there is a special occasion in which I get out a little clutch. I am not one of those girls highly into purses and shoes. Just have a few simple choices. But put me in a fabric store and I will find a ton of fabric that I want. So I need to organizie my sewing room. LOL

      Lol, you don't even have to be highly into purses and shoes, I'm a student and switch between my backpack and my purse regularly. But it's not about just doing everything she does, you can take in her suggestions and make it work with your own lifestyle :)

      Yes, that is kind of what I did, I read the book and chose a few of her methods. But I still do not talk to my socks. LOL

      Neither do I, haha. I do fold them though, which makes opening the sock drawer extremely satisfying, so that's good enough.
