Jimin was the one that sprouted wings. He represents the black swan in this video. Notice when he’s in white suit he’s dancing differently than he is when he’s wearing the black. He is dying his first death (Martha Graham) throughout the whole video until he collapses at the end. He’s the only member that’s trained in contemporary so a lot of the time when you see him dancing he’s off the one that singing his part.
Edited to add: Blood Sweat and Tears come close when it comes Black Swan. Also Fake Love. Spring Day. Jimin’s Lie is incredible. Suga’s Shadow too. Even Anpanman has a deeper meaning!

    Fun facts...
    - BTS has actually covered Every Breath You Take but in the Puff Daddy version. They even changed some of the rap parts to Korean.
-The shadow/fear in Black Swan starts out really big and over-powering. Midways, when they confront it, reach out for it, they become equals. In the end they accept the fear as a part of who they are as artists and the shadow is absorbed back into them.

BTS have so many songs with deeper meanings that it is hard to just pick one, Whalien 52 and 134340 are two that pop into my head immediately. Even songs that sound like they are a straight up play/party songs can surprise you with deeper meanings like GO GO, Anpanman, or Baepsae. They are great for making us think as well as enjoy the music and I love them for that. They even poked fun at ARMY's obsession with them in Pied Piper. My recommendation is to just pick a song that sounds interesting to you and have fun seeing that it is more than you thought. Great reaction and glad your better Kyle. 💜💜💜💜

This song is truly a special song. And you guys are right in that this song can apply to non-artistic endeavors. I’m a high school teacher and I love it but earlier this year, something happened personally and for awhile I lost my passion for teaching and I felt empty. And this song certainly hit me totally.
You were talking about going back to their earlier discography… yesterday, I listened to their Dark & Wild album thinking that I wouldn’t like it but I found so many songs I loved. So you may be surprised to go back. The boys are incredible writers, especially the rap line.
For me the song that made me a fan is Spring Day. And yes, the music video has a connection to an actual tragedy, the song itself is helping go through the process of grief. I’m not really a rap fan but I love all the rap line songs. Some of their songs are anti-establishment that could have led to being blacklisted by the Korean government. I’m sure you will get tons of recommendations but you really should go through the discography because you will find your own BTS playlist that means a lot for you. Before BTS, I only listed to classical piano, so I know Bach really well. 😊
And I grew up in the 80’s so I remember the Police MV of that song and I thought that was creepy. I thought I had read that Sting wrote this for an ex after a divorce? Lol.

I hope you found passion someplace else. Teaching is one of the toughest professions. The entire Wings area is definitely on par artistically with the Map of the Soul: 7 era - the Wings shorts/MVs and depth of the songs are some of BTS's best. It's really BTS's "art album" era.
It's a bit overwhelming, but if you take it solo song by song/relevant short by short, it's probably the most personal solos the members have had, as well as the most creative musically. I think it's a great way to learn about each of the members and their own individual styles as well!
It starts with Jungkook's solo, Begin (#1): ruclips.net/video/yR73I0z5ms0/видео.html
(Note, none of the solo songs have music videos, but there are a bunch of lyric videos out there...there are music videos for Boy Meets Evil, the intro, & Blood, Sweat, and Tears, the lead single)

As people already mentioned in the comments it was Jimin who sprouted the wings haha. He's also the one doing all the solo dance parts and playing the shadow dancing behind the members. A little fun fact that aligns with the entire theme of Black Swan and the choreography itself is that Jimin is actually a trained contemporary dancer from a top art school in Korea and contemporary dance was actually branched off as a rebellion against the rigidity and perfection required by ballet that can sometimes stifle the dancers and kill their passion for their art. Contemporary dance is supposed to be more emotive and expressive and Jimin kind of exposes that transition in the video. He's much more graceful and soft when in the whole outfit (aligning with ballet) and then breaks out from the rigidity when he sprouts wings and tries to reclaim his love and passion (the movements get far more intense and chaotic in the black outfit) until finally he collapses and dies his first death like in Black swan

This song says, “The dancer dies twice. The first death is when the dancer stops dancing. And this death is much more painful,” the legendary contemporary dancer Martha Graham made its motif. Just as a dancer faces his first death when he quits dancing, it contains the fear of the moment when he will no longer be able to stand on the stage as an artist.
"The more I do music, the more I fear that music will no longer give me a lot of emotion or trembling, but the moment I face my inner 'Black Swan' from the depths of my heart, I paradoxically realize that there is only music."
Suga also said that if he is flying now with the wings that ARMY gave him, he wants to land slowly rather than fall.
[Suga] Ayy, they say my heart is not beating
    no more listening to music
    Tryna pull up
    Time seems to have stopped
Oh that would be my first death
    I been always afraid of
[RM] If this makes me cry no more
If you can't make my heart tremble more
How could I ever die like this
But what if that moment’s right now
    right now
Ps:Black Swan is my favorite song. When I had to end my 25-year career as a contemporary dancer, I felt the same way, and this song comforted me.

Something I love the most about BTS is how deep a lot of their music is. The further you get into their discography you’ll discover so many songs with deep and meaningful lyrics. Even if they’re known as a pop/hiphop boy group and those songs go the biggest commercially, a lot of their work, I’d even venture to say the majority of it, is much deeper. I’m still learning and going down rabbit holes to this day three years in 😂 one of my personal favorite songs is called the truth untold. That one has a lot of back story as well and I hope you’ll get to it. Love the reactions 😁

Black Swan has a special place in my (and I believe a lot of other people) heart. It *is* very relatable. As someone who also passionate about something. About creating... it's absolutely terrifying to think of the day when I won't be able to do what I love and passionate about anymore. Depression did that to me for a few years and I did blame myself for losing touch with what I love. Deep down that passion is still inside, but I couldn't physically and mentally fulfill that passion. :")
As the members have multiple times said, they're well aware that everything won't last forever. So I hope they as an artist could make music and perform for as long as they can and want to; and I'll be there to witness it.
As always great reaction and discussion, guys

As a huge fan of Aronofsky films, especially Black Swan, and of BTS I freaked out when this music video and the lyrics came out. There are variations of the story in all the different adaptations since the original ballet. BTS relating to it from their own perspective as artists and the fears they have is so well done lyrically, choreography-wise, and visually. I think people who are in any artistic field that have spent their whole lives doing the one thing they love would be lost if they stopped loving what they are doing and the passion is gone. If you haven’t watched the “Black Swan Art Film” video that they dropped during promo for this song I highly recommend it. It’s an actual modern dance group that performs to the orchestral version of this song.

BTS has a lot of songs with deeper meanings that often get overlooked by the fact that they are a boyband and the stereotype that comes with that. They have many songs like this, some about them confronting their own shadows and fears like this one Black Swan, and Suga's solo Shadow where he talks about being afraid of being famous, because as the lights on him become brighter, his shadows grows bigger; they talk about their personas in songs like Idol where they embrace the title "Idol" which is often talked down by many people who say "Idol/Kpop music isn't good or authentic" by saying they don't care anymore because they know who they are and chant that nobody can stop them from loving themselves, as well as in RM's solo Persona where he talks about who he is, his persona and what he wants to be and all the things that come with that; one of their first more daring songs is actually a single from secong album O!RUL8,2?, the song is called N.O and it seems to be a sequel to their debut song No More Dream where talk about feeling so pressured by people to study hard and get into a good university that they're left with no space to dream about what they really want to do or be, in N.O they take it a step further and directly criticize the insane schedules that korean students have to go through asking "Who are the ones the made us into studying machines? The ones that categorized us into numbers and stragglers and locked us in a trap" and urge the people to say no to these ideals and to not let themselves be trapped living in someone else's dream; Spine Breaker is another one where they openly talk down on teenagers wanting to have only the good expensive things in life because all of their other (richer) friends in school have them, essentially "breaking their parents spines" in order to get those useless things just to gain status; in Baepsae which to a regular listener that doesn't understand what they're saying can easily be overlooked as just a fun hype song to dance to actually criticizes the older generation for fucking up the economy to the point where young people can't even afford housing and when they get jobs they're often underpayed or not payed at all because it's an "experience job", and talk down on the older generation for calling the younger generation "lazy" and "not hard working" when in fact they are the ones to blame for the environment the youngsters have to survive through nowadays.
They also have some very personal songs as well, often solos, where they talk about their own struggles and stories. Some that come to mind is Suga's Nevermind and his solo from the Wing's album called First Love where he talks about his deep love for the piano and growing up alongside the instrument changing his flow in a sort of conversational way where he speaks as the piano and as himself, and Jin's solo Epiphany which might be one of their most beautiful songs talking about self-love emphasizing that he is the one he should love, following the group's continuous message that loving oneself is the most important love people should have in their lives.
And it would be a crime to not mention Spring Day when finishing this essay of a comment.
Spring Day has been charting on the Top 50 section of Gaon's Digital Charts for 5 CONSECUTIVE YEARS, making it one of, if not the most, streamed/bought/listened to BTS song, also considered by most Armys BTS most iconic and beautiful song, telling the story of losing someone you deeply loved and cared for, be it a friend, a partner, a family member, somebody who has passed away, literally anybody who had a big part in your life and are no longer there and all the feelings that come with that, the longing for the person to come back, it's opening lines being "I miss you, saying this out loud makes me miss you more", and the anger about this person leaving/growing apart but still not being able to forget them because they meant so much. They compare the longing to meet with this person again to being a snowflake in a snowing day saying "If I were a fluttering snowflake I would be able to reach you a little faster", comparing these sad times to winter and waiting for the spring to come so they can be together/happy again. It's also important to mention that although this has never been confirmed by the members, a lot of people have theorized that this song is about, or makes reference to the Sewol Ferry Tragedy which killed 304 of the 476 people on board, being that more than 300 passengers were young students of the Danwon High School who were going on an organized trip, only 75 students were able to survive the tragedy. The references people have noted are mostly in the music video, scenes of Jimin by the ocean retrieving a pair of shoes from the water, shots filmed from inside a laundry machine which many have said resemble the windows of a ferry/ship, scenes of Suga on top of a big pile of clothes which could represent the people lost in the tragedy (the pile of clothes is actually an art piece so you can interpret it in many ways). In the music video they also reference the fictional town of Omelas from the fantasy book called "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas". The story is a utopia where in the town of Omelas everything is perfect and everyone is happy, but in order for that to be one child has to be the kept in complete darkness and misery. When people learn about the child most of them decide to ignore it since that is the reason why they are able to live such happy lives, but some decide to escape, not necessarily knowing where to go but going anyway, them being the ones that walk away from Omelas. The boys in the music video seem to represent the people of Omelas, in many scenes they are seen having fun, looking happy and in peace, then in others they seem to start to realize that something is wrong, leading them to run away and take a train to anywhere, essentially leaving Omelas. In one of the final scenes we can see that Jimin hung the shoes he retrieved from the ocean in a tree which to many is a tribute to the students who lost their lives in the ferry accident or could also be seen as them paying tribute to the fictional child of Omelas. In the end we can see all the boys finally together in a deserted place by the tree where the shoes are hanging from as the winter turns into spring. It's beautifully written song and a beautifully made music video so I highly recommend reacting to it. So in conclusion:
    REACT TO SPRING DAY! 💜

The live version is incredible and you can really feel their emotion. personally, i believe Black Swan is so widely relatable because it doesn't have just one meaning, but rather different layers of it superimposing to create some big image. bts have been weaving a story throughout their content for years, in which they've depicted the process of growing up and knowing oneself; they have acted as children, as young boys who've gone and done so much, as young men who struggle with their identity and what part of us is real (as in, this saying of "a person's true colors"; is it just the ugly, dark colors which are true? or rather is it the pretty, vibrant colors we show to the outside? that's pretty much what maps: persona is telling.) in the BU, black swan is referring to the moment where we fight or unite with our shadows, leaving it to break us or make us (something which is very visible in the alternative black swan mv, with a crew of dancers). they tell that story while that telling itself is representing who they are as people (artists, performers) and that they've struggled when it comes to separating the stage persona to their real self (which, again, is visible in Shadow).
it's complicated to point-blank explain because it goes in circles, but if anything, i'd recommend searching for a guideline to watch the BU in order. have a nice day, and thank you for your time!

Spring Day is a great song with a lot of deep meaning to it. Many would say it is one of their best songs. While the lyrics of the song can be related to many different feelings and circumstances, the MV has lots of references and imagery of an incident that happened in Korea called the Sewol Ferry Disaster/Tragedy. There is a great analysis video on it from Italian ARMY. Fair warning though, it is pretty sad and devastating.

    3. Lie (vulnerability and escaping temptation, musically-rich and very sultry)

This is one of my top 5 favorite songs by them. I love this song.
Also love Kyle's taste in music. Love A Perfect Circle and Nine Inch Nails.
I would recommend the song Lie by Jimin. It has some really deep meaning. There is no official music video for it but there is a lyrical video.
It seems to me that the most deep songs that BTS has are either the individual somgs or the line songs. I think that is just because individually you can sing something that is really important to you or really affecting you better than with a group sometimes.
I would also recommend the song outro: tear. It was done by the rapline around the time period when they thought about breaking up as a group.

For me blackswan is about their lives as idols . While on stage, the spotlight is all on them, the media covers their every move, finding faults to every little mistakes that they are afraid to make even a little mistake that haters blow up. They are seen by fans as perfect and so if they make a mistake, its the end of their careers. If their passion is lost and they cant give what fans expect then its their death.

I think one of the things that does some deserves to BTS' music is how some people only want to stick to the literal meaning of the song based on how the artist wrote it. But what makes the best songs and the best lyricist, or poets or writers is that their work can be relatable to a wider audience. 1000 people don't live the same life so they may hear the same song and hear a different song from the person next to them.
I can't relate to losing a passion for music or dancing, but I can relate to losing passion, in my case my career or hobbies, they aren't things that define me but they are parts of my life that kept me moving forward.
And what's great about BTS lyrics is that the depressing things don't linger, they give you a sense of hope that it can get better.
On a lighter note from beginning to end of this song I am also reminded of Jack Skellington, because it's basically what he went through on Nightmare Before Christmas.

One song that stands out to me as having a deeper meaning is NO. Its not in and of itself deeper, but for an "idol group" it hits hard at societal norms and expectations of youth.
I'm almost 42, and a lot of the boy bands and idols of my youth NEVER touched on any important topics, it was all about having fun and "love". That's one of the things I love about BTS, while they do have their poppy catchy songs, the majority of their music touches on real life.

guys please react to Spring Day, it is considered as the Queen of all BTS songs. it has never left the Top 50 Gaon chart since its release in 2017. the song in itself has a deep meaning about missing someone you've lost but the inspiration for the music video is more heartbreaking. there's an explanation video about that, watch the video first and take note of a few details so you can relate it when you watch the explanation video.
other BTS songs that has a deep meaning are Blood, Sweat and Tears and some of their catchy songs which seem light and fun but actually tackles social issues like N.O., Baepsae, Go Go and Anpanman for some.

You touched on it for a second and the movie Black Swan is based on the famous ballet Swan Lake. This MV is closer to Swan Lake. In the ballet there is a white/good swan and a black/evil swan , in many productions the main character(one of the most coveted roles in ballet) is played by the same dancer, symbolizing the struggle within oneself between the light and dark(shadow self) which is what Map of the Soul is all about. There is also a very famous production of Swan Lake with an all male cast playing the swans (AMAZING). I think you guys would really like the making of this MV. And Kyle, JK is my bias too 😘💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

I think it's safe to say that most BTS songs have a deep meaning. Sometimes understanding the whole meaning takes quite a bit of research because there is so much context involved (cultural references, Korean language meaning, references to BTS' journey and the relationship with ARMY). Alao, they create concept albums with narratives/story arcs. SUGA once explained theat the meaning might only become clear when listening to all the songs on one album. I recommend SUGA's beautiful 2016 solos track First Love next. It shows his outstanding ability to create images and a whole story with his lyrics.

NIN, A PERFECT CIRCLE AND BTS. i feel such kinship w y'all rn.

  • @Dani.Torres
    @Dani.Torres 2 года назад

My all times favorite bands are Tool, A perfect circle, NIN, Opeth, Alice in Chains, Neurosis and of course BTS. Their discography are full of songs with deep meanings. They get most of the audience by their colorful songs and choreography but they trapped you in their world with their b-sides and amazing lyrics. So from Map of The Soul 7 most of the songs are meant to be listened in the order they appear in the album, because is a conceptual album (think King Crimson, Pink Floyd). All their songs are linked, telling the story of finding the self through different situations as artists and individuals by mapping their soul using Carl Jung's theory of the self. Maynard James Keenan also used Jung's theories to write lyrics for the album 'Aenima'.
So, you need to listen to the rest of the songs from this album to get the bigger picture, specifically, RM's Persona, SUGA's Shadow, and J-hope's Ego. Do not forget "UGH!" from the rap line, that song needs plenty of time to reach the true meaning of it.
BTS also have other concept albums, WINGS is a big one. The trilogy of "Love Yourself" is great, very deep and emotional, but with fun songs too. You will need plenty of research for these albums as well.
Talking about fun songs that if you listen to them gives you a vibe but then you read and go into the lyrics and are something else, BTS have plenty of them. My favorites are the political ones (Am I Wrong, Baepsae, N.O, Spring Day) The social commentary ones (UGH!, Spine Breaker, DDaeng, Go Go) The motivational ones (Tomorrow, 2! 3!, No more dreams, Anpanman). And they have strange songs as well (Whalien 52, 13430). They do have a lot of great lyrics and music.

I don't think that there is a person alive who won't relate to the fear of losing passion unless they already lose theirs. I personally happen to experience this (still experiencing), after years of loving doing research and working on my field of study, I lost all motivation and passion to finish my phd and abandoned everything I loved doing, everything collapsed but the problem is I didn't feel anything but void, still to this day trying to find myself, find another passion to give myself a reason to keep moving otherwise I really don't know what to do with my life.. It's been almost a year since I took "a time off" from everything to rediscover myself and hopefully one day I'll find the missing piece.

Your comment about "Black Swan" being mature is very spot on. I'm glad that you guys appreciate that side of BTS and that you analyze the song lyrics. That is what makes BTS' discography appealing to so many different age groups. Their themes range from young love, self-love, rebellion, artistic pursuits, mental health, etc, so there's a lot of stuff to discover.

  • @psychokitty71
    @psychokitty71 2 года назад +1

Honestly, most of their songs have multiple meanings. They have songs that have one meaning for the members of BTS, another meaning for the listener and yet another meaning/message that the boys are trying to convey. And then you throw in a music video and get a fourth meaning. Especially when you deal with the BTS Universe story line. Their first albums deal mainly with issues that people in high school typically relate to, because that was their age when they wrote the songs. Even then, however, you have songs lik No More Dream, where they tell people to stop following the dream that someone else has for them and to follow their own dreams. They have songs like N.O, which is a criticism of the Korean school system. I've seen people mention Sprig Day. The song itself is about losing someone, either to time and distance or to death. The video, however, is a tribute to the Sewol Ferry tragedy. Around 250 high school students drowned when a ferry sank. Government corruption and greed caused the accident but the actions of the Coast Guard, press, and government officials caused so many deaths. They then tried to cover up the truth. The MV references all of that. There are two explanation videos for Spring Day that ARMY always recommends. One is by Bulletproof Vibes and the other one is by Italian ARMY. The first one is more about the visuals in the video than anything else. The second one, however, discusses the imagery, but mainly focuses on the actual tragedy and what happened to the ferry and the victims and their families. That one is absolutely gut-wrenching, so be aware of that before you watch it. It includes footage of the parents on shore, begging the uncaring coast guard to rescue their dying children. Many people aren't able to watch the whole thing. It's an excellent video, but the subject matter makes it difficult viewing.

Ik I’m late but if you haven’t already watched their performance of black swan on the late late show with James corden to show you you the amount of professionalism they have jhope actually gets kicked in the face by suga because the stage was a little small and you see the split second where he touches his cheek that got kicked and immediately going into the choreography again it’s such a quick minor movement that if you aren’t looking for it you will 100% miss it

In my Opinion: This is the one that should have won a Grammy. The idea of loss of love/interest/ability of your art should have been a message that most artists can relate to (especially since Grammy reps keep saying it's not a popularity contest.....?). Having the subtitles reinforce the concept but the tone and imagery are there. Spring Day is also excellent regarding message and imagery. I can't get through Butterfly without tearing up. As an older ARMY, I've seen many groups come and go, (including the Beatles, Bee Gees, Jackson Five, The Monkees - These are the ones where I knew the names of the members) but none have captivated my interest like BTS. Good review! THX

I've seen many people discuss this song and how it helped them in their depression. That line about the ocean one to mine because I describe my depression like that. Like you're in the water standing and suddenly a wave picks you up, sand slipping under your feet. Then bam the water is over your head and it's dark and heavy and you move so slow. It all seems to difficult to find your way back to the light. So this song speaks to so, so much.

I'm gonna recommend you guys a song you probably don't get recommended often, which is: BAEPSAE aka Silver Spoon. This song is a song in which BTS calls out boomers and the generation gap. Before BTS I had NEVER seen anyone write songs on these kinda subjects. (Am I Wrong, Spinebreaker, GoGo are a few other satirical songs that touch on social / political subjects).
To really understand Baepsae, please react to "DKDKTV explaining Baepsae". It's a famous video of 2 Korean guys explaining the song's meaning. It will give you a true insight and blow you away. And will also give you a really good insight in what sets apart BTS from other groups and makes them special. (ps Baepsae doesn't have an MV, but does have a dance practice). So yeaaah DEFINITELY watch both Baepsae with lyrics and then the explanation to understand 1 of the reasons why BTS's music is special.

Yes most BTS lyrics are complex and mature but when you have a lyrical genius like RM that's what you get. I really do recommend starting from the beginning watching thier growth and change gives you a different experience then jumping around in eras. Also the rise of bangtan series is amazing and that starts from before they debut you get to enjoy the whole journey of slowly reaching new goals they never dreamed of.

There are some songs from their Love Yourself era/albums that get pretty introspective & deep (“Answer: Love Myself” & “Epiphany” are two songs that come to mind), but MOTS:7 has quite a number of deep songs. You gotta dig into some songs off some of their earlier albums: Tomorrow, Am I Wrong, Epilogue: Young Forever are a few that come to mind.
