I love your mentioning of men's mental health! I don't think I've heard anyone actively bring that up with this song, but you're right, there is such a problem in the way that society at large treats men's pain and I think that these lyrics could easily apply to that, especially because the members themselves are such positive examples of being healthily emotional. They're not afraid to cry in front of others or explain their pain, so they really are role models in that specific area, not just for men but for everyone.

This is the song that really pulled me into BTS. They found me at my lowest. How I relate to this song is through self love. I tried to portray myself a certain way and I tried to mold myself into someone I'm not for someone else. If I didn't know myself and love myself, how could I love someone else? I didn't have self love, therefore the love I had for myself was fake. And if I had to mold myself for someone else to love me, their love towards me was fake. Cliche, but this song really opened my eyes to look at all my relationships. Relationships with myself, my ex-husband, my friends and family. BTS always finds you when you need them most. 💜

This mv is part of their storyline (Bangtan Universe/BU) which is worth checking out if you have the time. Someone will likely leave a list of the videos. This song is from the Love Yourself trilogy of albums. The first, LY: Her was about the excitement and bliss of new love. The second, LY: Tear (which this is from) covered the dark side of love. The third, LY: Answer was about needing to love yourself in order to experience true love with others.

omg the way you can see the kitty's ears just above the MV box sometimes lol!!! SO CUTE!!!
anyways, i like your interpretation of the MV. I think overall it's about trying to be someone you're not for another person, and I think toxic masculinity and the pressure to present yourself in a certain way as a man definitely falls into that. I'm sure there are plenty of men who hide their emotions (or flat out ignore them), because they don't want their friends or partners to see them as a "wuss" or not "manly".

I am a little late to comment but I really really appreciate that you guys give attention to the lyrics. Afterall, one of the major reason for BTS's success is their lyrics.
You guys were not far off but did get it quite correct! Fake love is a very deep song. It tells about how people change themselves and their personalities to make the person they love to love them back (it was virtually depicted by RM looking at the mirror and seeing a very polished reflection of himself but he is not able recognise himself because he has changed so much). Hence, the song is saying, your lover ultimately loves the image that you created of yourself which is not YOU! That's why it is fake love!!
Hope this helps you understand a bit about the song. It is just a drop in their huge BTS Universe!!❣️❣️

I listen to this song daily! I am working on self-love/reflection. These young men have done more for my mental health than any "therapist". I felt nothing inside for a very long time, I floated through my life after I lost my brother. Their music got me off my couch and I started to FEEL EMOTIONS again. I felt my heart beating! I have done a TON of crying. I smile and dance now, I sing out loud and work on self-love. That is the hardest thing to do in this life. LEARNING TO LOVE YOURSELF. This song is a part of a very complicated storyline, and it will blow your mind! You two are very open-minded and if you decide to take that trip I'm here for it. Well done! 💜

Sooooo there's a lot of references and easter eggs in this music video that are geared towards the BU (BTS Universe) Storyline, which is a FICTIONAL storyline that runs across multiple bts music videos that are marked in the descriptions with a BU at the bottom. It's pretty complex and really deserves a whole long deep dive into hahaha. I wouldn't recommend it unless you have time for it and it touches upon stories that might be triggering to certain people.
Edit: The patriarchy and patriarchal ideals within current society dictates a lot of things and women are usually the oppressed in these matters. However, men are greatly affect as well and not always positively. I've always been an advocate for mental health and I've always tried to bring it up with my guy friends because I am always super worried about them. Sometimes I see them deal with things in such unhealthy ways it's sad and worrisome. And yet if we talk too much about our feelings and such, it can be considered too "girly" or too "feminine". Mental health has no gender. And the terms "girly" and "feminine" shouldn't be seen as a negative.

This mv in particular reflects a lot of their characters stories in the BU, which contains connections with the butterfly effect and time travel (the storyline runs throughout a lot of their music videos, there's even a webtoon of it you guys could check out). The rooms each member is "trapped" in hints a lot towards some characteristics related to the characters they portray, so without giving too much away here's the connections I can count of of the top of my head:
RM's room kind of looks like a trailer, which ties in with his character's living conditions; Suga's room contains a piano and fire which is a visual associated to him many times throughout the mvs that follow the BU, his story is also tied with Jungkook's which we cant really see much of it here but their stories affect one another directly; V's room has a lot of cellphones which ties back to a scene from another music video where he calls RM for help; Jimin and J-Hope's stories are also connected but individually Jimin is often related with water and drowning and J-Hope is related with the the chocolate bars, childhood and narcolepsy; Jin, who in fact is the considered the main character of the story is connected directly with figuring out with the butterfly effect and using time travel in order to save every one's lives.
Im sure someone else will explain it better than I did and probably link the music videos connected to the story in chronological order for you guys to check out but that's basically the main visuals we have learned to associate with the members and their characters throughout many years of theorizing what was going on until the webtoon came out and finally we had our answers. Love the reaction

Them being trapped in their own rooms is a great observation. Everyone in a relationship that’s bad feels like they are experiencing it by themselves because only they know what it feels like. Then each room either has collapsing floors while trying to run, or flooding, or engulfed in fire etc.

Yessssss that line "I wish love was as perfect as love itself" really hit me so hard!! I love it so much. And the line "I grew a flower that can't bloom in a dream that can't come true" -OOF.
The visuals are amazing. I've realised BTS work has layers. It may be related to the BTS universe for example but it also means this thing and another thing too.
I always view it like you said, the rooms are their various ways they fall apart. Feeling like everything is exploding within and without you, Feeling like your drowning, feeling like Everything's burning down around you, feeling like your trapped in pretending to be joyful, feeling like you are just looking at someone else in the mirror, feeling consumed by messages and conversations etc.... and some are less content in that feeling than others. Jimin and Suga have accepted it for example, V and RM are trying to find a way out somehow, Jin has given up, Jhope is spiralling into it.

Thank you for your mention of men’s mental health! In society it is sadly still looked down upon and not really mentioned a lot as well.
    TW: Mention of death
Fake Love is really special to me. When the release of the song and album was a round the corner my grandma was getting really sick. We got told that she would have long to live. At that time I was on autopilot. The things I did, the things I felt like I wasn’t really controlling it myself. Every time I was at my grandmas I showed emotions of happiness because I didn’t want her to feel emotional pain by seeing me being sad. She already had to live through so much physical pain. So whenever they sing the phrase ´For you I could pretend like I was happy when I was sad. For you I could pretend like I was strong when I was hurt´ I always think of my grandma. The first time I mourned her death was while listening to Fake Love. This song will alway connect my to my grandma and I know BTS will never know how much this song means to me but I am so grateful this song exists.

Many BTS songs deal with serious issues such as mental health. It’s one of the reasons ARMY are so passionate about BTS. Their work transcends language barriers and gets to the universal feelings we all suffer from. Their songs aren’t shallow pop songs but ones full of emotion and understanding. When we listen, we find what we need to hear that maybe we don’t find from those around us. I actually find this to be true of kpop in general. Several times I’ve been in such a depressive meltdown and things are really dark and I feel so alone, but out of nowhere a group I like will release a song or I’ll discover an old one and it will be like I’m heard. I recommend you guys check out Agust D - The Last, BTS - Spring Day (and explanation video), V- Singularity, BTS- Blue and Grey (written by V), BTS - Mikrokosmos, and BTS- We are Bulletproof the Eternal. Also these songs are the ones I mentioned found me at the exact right moment: SuperM - Better Days, Ateez - Turbulence, Ateez - One Day at a Time, and Straykids- Scars.

So it resonates with you, no matter the direction, it has filled its purpose. Personally I like the BTSxARMY interpretation of the song, they were really trying to say it’s “fake love” to view them as “dolls”, to force them to hide their own selves, to want things to be perfect all the time. That’s one of the initial songs from their LOVE YOURSELF series where they explore the many facets of love and how it can be expressed. It would be interesting to follow the album’s path of self discovery in one of your podcasts.

There is sooo much going on in this video:
The song fake love is part of the love yourself series, this is the part where love falls apart because you are not yourself anymore (love yourself tear) which will lead to the realisation that you need to love yourself first (love yourself answer)
Then there is the music video which tells part of the storyline, each room has to do with the members story and trauma in that universe.
Then there is the save me - I'm fine sign which are 2 songs that follow each other in terms of message.
Then there is also the choreography, which is illustrating the saying see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil.
Welcome to BTS and ARMY !

There is context in the form of 2 (!) storylines.
One is the mentioned BU and starts with "I need U" (even as theoretically the MVs before that could fit the Universe, too)
The other is the one of the "Love Yourself"-albums. Begining with "Intro: Serendibity" (the falling in love) going over the main song "D.N.A." (where love feels like fate/destiny) and "Outro: Her" (where the first misstones appear) is the first album. The second begins with "Intro: Singularity" (we are hurting, we do know why but refuse to aknowledge it while knowing we will not be able to hide forever) goes over "Fake Love" (where the bond rips apart since the other never had the chance to see our real selfes and the change we forced on ourself hurts too much/is too confusing that it is stronger than the love and rips it apart; works for any kind of relationship including friend, familar and others) and ends in "Outro: Tear" (that holds the pain of the destroyed relationship).
We finally get the answer on the last album "Love Yourself: Answer" with "Epiphany" where we discover that "I'm the one I should love in this world (...) my imperfect soul". Here it is already hinted at "The Map of the Soul": To love yourself you have to know yourself.
Concepts play a large role and I think album titles matter a good deal with BTS.
But I love your interpretation. It is just as right. We lie too much (to ourself as well as others) it will destroy ourself/the bond tainted by them. Society pushes too many stupid rules on people. BTS has a good way of showing that.
    You nice! Keep going!

This was the song that did it for me! Before this, I was completely like, "No, no boyband pop thank you." I saw this, snd I was floored. I felt like I had been living in some alternative universe and my entire reality had been upside down.
This is the feeling of falling down this awesome rabbit hole. 😂
Also: if you wanted to talk more about this video and this topic, I highly recommend the extended version of the video. There's more story and context in it, and the mix is more rock, which I think you might dig.

Cat is so cute! The lyrics are literally about yourself trying for the other person when you're in love. It's a song where you realize that you lost yourself. And realize this is fake love. So in the end, I'm saying that loving yourself and finding myself is real love.

The amount of symbolism, and how it ties to the BU, impresses me every time I watch this.
Not one scene or prop or outfit is coincidental. Even the jerky way that Jimin is dancing compared to the others...
And yes, I think your interpretation of lyrics is spot on. As well as your view of them being trapped in their separate rooms with JK watching them (as the young, impressionable one) and unsure how to reach them.

I think Fake Love is pretty widely regarded among ARMY as their best song (Hybe had Army do a bracket voting tournament via social media ahead of the release of 'Proof' to determine the three most popular songs among fans, and Fake Love was first by a loooooong shot), and the M/V aids in that a ton. In retrospect, this song is also super interesting because it ties into the Jungian psychology that ends up as the overarching theme of their next era, Map of the Soul. Visually it connects to most of the MotS:7 M/Vs and musically it connects to Black Swan. It just goes to show how purposefully they create some of their content, that they were creating and laying out these connections' years ahead of time. As far as what is going on in the M/V, that ties into the BTS universe, which is something they had been story telling visually and in album not since at least 2015's 'I Need U', I can't say too much more about it because I have very purposely avoided going down that particular sub-'rabbit hole', for my own sake. Personally, their Love Yourself era music is without compare. There is so much amazing stuff in those three albums, with Fake Love as the crown jewel.

Be sure to watch their behind the scenes making of Fake Love .... shows how detailed their original sets are... shows haters how serious they are about producing unique songs/MV's .... fire is real. ... water is real ... hundreds of snickers are real... etc.
Also, many of the scenes harken back to parts of the BTS Universe backstory such as J-hope's Snickers and Carnival paraphernalia goes back to how his "character" was abandoned by his Mom....

yes SUGA did say this song is much darker than their usual stuff. It's primarily written by RM.
RM on Fake Love, "We're saying that if you're not true to yourself, your love won't last forever. The love could be person to person, it could be between me and myself," he explained. He then joked, "It's kinda deep."
Also if you noticed the choreo in the chorus where they drop their arms / bodies, it resembles the marionette doll as they sing about being someone's "doll".

Liked the review. This is an emotional song... in the hallway with V towards the end with all the cellphones going off at the end of the hallway the wall the writing says "Save Me", ( another song on this album) but true to form BTS always connects from one song to another. If the words are flipped around it says "I'm Fine", another song on this album. I love this kind of stuff. Don't forget the Esmeraldo flower (not a real flower) that Jin is protecting at the beginning which shows up later with JK at the end in the waterfall scene as it flutters up from the ashes. The flower shows up constantly in their videos as a symbol for "the truth that couldn't be told". It is in a lot of BTS videos. Every color, every item, every person has value and carries a story, nothing is wasted... keeps ARMY thinking but also using their creative side just like the writers of the songs. You probably already know this but there is a storyline for each of these scenes that they created and it is gut-wrenching... emotionally because ARMY can identify with the emotions especially if they lived it. No BTS is singing our language.

I’m super impressed that you both picked up on the themes in the video. I am sure have been told about the BU below, but there are so many layers to their music. This album came after the group nearly disbanded and when writing these songs, the guys were able to express their feelings and pour them into the music. The song Tear is really powerful when you know how it came about. Also their Japanese single Let Go. Using fake love as the example, the layers include: the theme of the album was the pain of separation; the individual thoughts, not only of the members, but if the producers and creative team who have been with them for so many years; the video brings to life the next stage of the BU, while also visualizing the them of the album for us. Their stuff is deep deep. And it’s incredible.

These guys touch all genres. You will find simple poppy songs, bluesy music, hip hop, contemporary, even some songs that could be called rock. If you want to get into the BU, bangtan Universe, then start with "I need you" and "Run". There are back stories for all of they guys. BTW, they don't do much cgi and I understand the dropping floor, fire and water scenes for this MV were not cgi.

BTS MVs have one connected story line. In previous MV J-Hope was a little boy with his mom in amusement park. His mam give him a candy bar and live him alone. He wait but nobody come. So candy bar is a symbol of fake love. In the Fake Love MV you can see he was waiting to the door somebody to come but only candy bar come from a hole on the door. Thru his life he get so many candy bars but not real love. Fake love can come in many different ways...

Definitely react to Blood, Sweet & Tears next! It was one of the songs that catapulted their international fame to a next level. Up unto that point they were still very much inside the Kpop bubble. Blood, Sweat & Tears (album: Wings) was when they really started gaining fans and attention internationally from outside of the existing Kpop niche. At the time literally nobody in Kpop had something like it. They stood out so much from the rest. Now many people copied that dramatic extravaganza, from the song, MV, the short films to the concept and everything. But at the time BTS was unparalleled and they set the standard that many in Kpop follow since.

Another great reaction! I suspected you both would be very interested in "Fake Love" because of how different in tone it is to other songs you've reacted to. As others have said, the rooms each member is stuck in corresponds to their BU storylines (RM and mirrors, J-Hope and the candy, Suga and fire, etc), but I like that you enjoyed the effects and look of the video along with the lyrics. Much needed mentions of mental health and male stereotypes, which I think BTS always tries to depict in their music and hits close for them.
Recommendations: "Outro: Tear" for an emotional rapline song, "Not Today" for an amazing visual video and song.

One of my favorite BTS title tracks...if not THE favorite. I think the best songs are open to many interpretations and this certainly is that. They even purposefully don't use any gendered pronouns or language in this song so everyone can apply it to their own life or situation.
When this song first came out the band talked about how the original production to this song was a lot darker and more rock sounding. As a title track, they had to change it a bit to make it a better song to dance and perform to. Shortly after they did release the rock version along with an extended version of this music video. Personally I think that version of the song is even better! Maybe you could react to it and do a full podcast on that version? The making of is also incredible as this is the music video famous for using as much practical (vs virtual) effects as possible.
Regardless, So glad y'all reacted and enjoyed one of my faves!

Fake Love is a good example of song where you think you know what it’s about based on song title, but when reading the lyrics, you realize it’s way deeper than it seems. I remember long time ago enjoying the song first, thinking it’s just an angsty love song (it’s still is, but not exactly about romantic love), but when I read the lyrics, my mind blown. I realize it’s really saying, you change yourself to what you think others or significant other to what you think they like or do like, so you’re hiding yourself, how you feel, and who you really are. When you pretend and be molded by what you think they love/like, then you lose yourself and you kind of forget who you are. When you don’t know yourself and don’t love/accept yourself, your relationship with someone is fake. It’s fake love, not real because you hid yourself/true you to be loved or accepted by others. So you were on the right path. BTS songs are always like that, a lot of times the title of the song is not what you think he song is about.

This is one of their masterpiece songs that is the title track on one of their overall best albums, Love Yourself Tear. They use imagery and choreography of being puppets and marionettes, the live versions at award shows really lean into it with hmmm tied up like puppets in a few. They really tapped into deeply resonating feelings of fake love and they portray many versions of it and the idea of the fake masks we wear for others. There is another version that is a longer MV and a “rock”version of it the “extended Fake Love” which ties in much more with the hooded figures and the BU. The prequel to this is the Mv and song Singularity FYI a solo V song that is Neo Soul and has similar imagery and lyrics that tie in. RM wrote Singularity for V right after waking up from minor surgery in just under an hour. It’s one of their deeper songs.

Ohhh Stormy totally steals the spotlight, even when the video was running I could sometimes see the tips of (his?) ears 😂 🥰💜
You've dipped your toe in BU territory (BTS Universe)! There's a story line to some of their songs, it's brilliantly complicated, I still don't get some of it. I can tell you J-Hope's character is abandoned by his mom at a carnival when he's little, she leaves him with a candy bar ffs (enter bed of candy bars as emotional baggage). They each have something specific going on, they're better when they're together than apart, and if you want to start from the start, I Need You is the first song in the BU. Or you could enjoy each song individually for what it's worth because there's enough there to satisfy a hungry brain!
    Good luck 🙂💜

All these scenes are part of the BTS universe storyline. Y'all have to watch their hyyh highlight reels to understand it. For example, the part with jhope lying on the pile of snickers has to do with how he was abandoned by his mother at an amusement park at a very young age with only a snicker left by his mother. (just fiction, don't worry) The snickers could symbolise false hope and longing in a relationship for someone or something(a job). Which meant the same as the lyrics in the song, _I grew a flower that can't be bloomed_

Your interpretation is so interesting and enriching. As you said, I believe viewers' interpretrations are as valid and part of the beauty of a piece of art as the author's intentions. The beauty of art is that it brings out a genuine feeling within us, whether it fits the author's initial intentions or not (Of course if one's interpretation becomes completely direspectful towards the artist's intentions because it doesn't take context into consideration -let's say when the interpretration becomes political or controversial - a discussion is worth having). All of this to say that I love your genuine reactions to these MVs. Personally, I thought they were talking about the persona they/we put on to please others, how it comes from a genuine place of loving people, but it ultimately becomes a pretense and thus, a fake love towards others. When I first heard it, I projected that they must have been talking about the relationship they have with their fans, where they still have to hide all the bad things although at the same time, they genuinely love their fans. How this relationship is still ambiguous because it necessarily comes with a certain degree of distance. But I heard RM say that Fake Love described the relationship one has with oneself, I found it very touching and relatable.
