Great video. I just turned 60, and have lived in Arizona my whole life. I definitely need to go see more of the state. Thank you for a great and informative video. The Dragoon's will be on my list now. Thank you!
Love the geology. The thought that the mountains were formed under ground and what you see is the weathered granite after millions of years have eroded the surrounding soil. First time I saw a coati too. Awesome you got video of it
I've done the Cochise Stronghold full hike (From other side)- it's really great, though someone told me there are a lot of snakes in the summer. I did it in the winter - Feb? a few years ago. Great weather. Saw the Cochise Stronghold campground...but didn't know about this BLM area. Awesome!
Love your vids. Also, I appreciate that you share your campsites. This really helps others. Promise to keep your sites clean and trash free. Best wishes.
How cool that you got to see a coati! We're pretty sure that's what ran off with a package of marshmallows we accidentally left out when we camped off Proctor Road in Madera Canyon. 😂
thanks for your video! i will have to try again to go there again! i don't know if i got to watch your video prior to going. i definitely will rewatch before . happy trails !!
Coati mounds travel in large groups most of the time, I've seen as many as 60 with young ones. Glad you got to see one! Nice video and directions. TONS of Apache War history and prehistory all over that range. Try a hike to Council Rocks and look up some history on it. You might see if that 687 road will take you to Dragoon Springs Butterfield Stage Station (I'm not sure if it will). If it does, that is a nice ride to a historically tragic place, very interesting history.
That would of been neat to see that many coati at a time. It was late evening, doing my evening hike and I stumbled on it in a wash I was hiking. Kinda freaked me out, never seeing anything like it before. LOLOL I've been to council rock, love that spot. Neat little area. I explored the other side of Dragoon mountains the last time I was there. I was planning on camping over there and hiking the trail. But to many people were camped out there already. I'll try camping on that side again next year. Thanks for watching!
Glad you like them! It's what I want to see when I'm seeing a camping spot for the first time. My first question is, what's the road like. LOL Thanks for watching and commenting!
Mark, I always enjoy your videos and appreciate that you give geo info of where you are, you show maps, etc and always give good overall panoramas of the surrounding area. So many youtubers just focus on themselves and we are left wondering, "that place looked pretty cool but where are you?" Keep up the good work brother!
I appreciate that! I'm the same way, I don't like watching youtubers who don't disclose their locations. I prefer to focus on the location, not me. LOL Thanks for watching Will!
Lucky you Mark seeing a Coati. They are pretty illusive. Quite a good population in the Chiricahua Mountains too. Like Raccoons, you mainly see them in the evening or nighttime. Safe travels!
I used to live in Arizona and we used to run into those while camping quite often. I love your videos that you show where your campsites are. Nobody else does it and it is a great idea. I look forward to your videos and thank you for such a detailed description of the area.
Always liked your videos and the way you go about camping👍 you drive to a remote spot that's hard to get to and then leave the steering wheel alone for half a week maybe more. I do the same and, like you, I explore on 2 wheels and on foot often over a 100 miles. My 2wheeler is a capable electric mountain bike that takes me ~60 mi per charge. My rig is a built-out Subaru Outback 2018 and, like you, I run a Honda ⚡ which I prefer to anything solar so far😃
Thanks 👍 I've been debating on getting an electric mountain bike, I just need to figure out where to store it while traveling. I don't want to put it on my bike rack outside. I'll think of something someday. LOL It sounds like your rig is very capable. And yes, I love my honda generators for sure. If I never left Arizona, I can see getting solar, but I don't follow the 70 degree weather. It's why I camp by myself most of the time, no one around to complain about my generator running. LOL Thanks for watching!
South eastern AZ is big Quadamundi range. At times you will see their whole troop and sometimes over 20 at a time. That was most likely a traveling Male.
The nice animal was a 'White-nosed Coatimundi' (Coati, zoological: Nasua narica). Arizona & New Mexico somehow the Northest regions to find them. They are usually in Mexico, in Central America: Named antoon or gato solo or pizote or tejón there. Somehow Southest to find them also the far northwestern region of Colombia near the border with Panama. -Greetings from Germany, Tom
First time seeing one of those. Pretty neat looking. Coming up on something like that while hiking a wash in the late evening kind of threw me for a loop. LOL
Excellent video! This area is only about an hour from my home and I didn't know about it, thank you for sharing. Not only is Tombstone close by, so is Bisbee which is another cool old mining town with a lot of history as well as Ft. Huachuca which is the home if the Buffalo Soldiers and has some interesting museums.
Coati? Heck, first time for me too. Mark, I really love your videos. You show interesting landscapes, (& animals) and provide directions, to include coordinates, road conditions... all excellent. Incites wanderlust for places I've never been. Thanks
I also came face-to-face with a Coati near that area... at first I wasn't sure if it was going to attack! The Javelinas are also a little intimidating and less timid.
I'm right with you. We both locked eyes at the same time and froze. We were both trying to figure out what we were going to do. LOL I'm just glad he stayed there long enough I could video it. I'm really looking forward to see a Javelina.
I was dispersed camping south of Tucson and came across a group of 5 Javelinas while hiking alone... they made me nervous, I've heard they can get aggressive. I carry a gun with me when hiking alone in the desert.
Yes it’s a beautiful area if you can get a spot. We’re there right now and it’s crazy packed. As soon as someone pulls out of the premium spots someone pulls in within 5 minutes
If you go a little further up Middle March rd. There is a cut off to Soren Pass, that takes you up to the top of the Dragoons with views of the whole valley. It's a pretty rough road but I made it up on my Kawasaki KLR 650 no problem.
@DispersedCamperMan yes, when you get to the top of Middle March rd. there is a 180° turn and a sign that has Soren Pass 3 ml. Dead End 5 ml. Middle March rd. leads to Pearce and the old Pierce Jail. If you head west from Pearce, you can take the old ghost town trail to Courtland. Some cool stuff to check out on that route. The back way to Tombstone.
Hi Mark. Very beautiful area. I've been watching all of your videos since you left out after Christmas. Just haven't committed yet. So far it's an amazing adventure. Leah and I rode on the stagecoach tour, a few years ago. Five days, that's a pretty good stay. I've heard them called ring tails or something like that, the animal you saw. Safe travels!
Thanks Tracy, Leah's been commenting in your absence. ;-) Thanks for watching! I thought the stagecoach was pretty neat looking rolling around. And if I'm staying five days at a spot, you can guarantee I really enjoy the area.
Mark you do some of the best boondocking videos on the web. And a Coatimundi, how cool. We we down in the general area last winter. Stopped at Tombstone. I've seen those mountains on the map and have wondered about them now I know a lot more. My Father was stations not too far away from there at Ft Huachuca (if I spelled it right). While we lived in Tucson, that was long ago.
@@DispersedCamperMan Well I'll drop the TT and drive the road first in my 4WD truck first to check the conditions. Thanks to your heads up on the approach road. That site reminded me of Indian Bread Rocks in some ways.
That's a beautiful, beautiful area. I wouldn't want to try to make it down FR 687 in my current vehicle, and I have to really want to get to a place to put up with 10 miles of rugged washboard like Middlemarch Road. I'm sure glad you give such good coverage to the road as well as the scenery. I like that campsite, but I'd have to have a different vehicle. I enjoyed the video, Mark.
Yup, middlemarch road isn't for everybody, for sure. LOL My motorcycle shocks were taking a beating driving on it. LOL But I really enjoy the dragoon mountains. I stare at them in awwww. I'll mostly likely be back there, sometime in the near future.
Awesome video of the area. Thanks for sharing. Do you cook food exclusively inside the camper or do you have a bbq pit / cook on a fire? Some places might have fire ban and a bbq pit is bulky to travel with. BUT it ain't camping without cooking on a flame.
I sometimes carry a BBq pit, but on this trip, I didn't feel like making room for it. I've been very tempted to run to Wal-Mart and buy one. LOL Even it it's a charcoal one. I'm starting to want a steak. LOL
Hi, i,m from new zealand and on my bucket list is council rocks area. In your opinion what the best time to visit, planning on a week. Climate wise and not 100,s of people. Thanks Rick.
Thanks for sharing the information on that great camping area! Beautiful and close to an interesting town too. Have you ever gotten lost on any of your hikes? That animal was cool. I had a Ringtail Cat get into the vehicle on Mt. Lemmon in Tucson. Looked similar.
Thanks! No I haven't gotten lost on any hikes so far. I carry maps on my phone that work via GPS if I need them, no cell signal necessary. I first saw that Coati, my first instinct was to run. LOL Pretty neat little animal. LOL
I didn’t think a coati was in North American. I googled it and it said they were in the SW US. That’s a neat thing to see. I definitely see how you thought it was a monkey 😂
I used your Dragoon map coordinates last year from the first time you were there - I had a terrific time camping in that region. Thanks for including the map coordinates in your notes. Question: What type of cell phone signal booster antenna do you use? Do you like it? Thanks.
The chance of seeing a jaguar are pretty slim although the imagine of some have been captured on game cams. Coatimundi’s are have migrated up from Mexico and are a nuisance, in packs they can be aggressive if you’re alone on a hike, it’s a good idea to have a pistol, they are varmints just like coyotes. Have fun in our beautiful state!
Nice area! Does airing down the tires help with the washboarding roads? I have a travel trailer and I don't think this would be too good for it, even though I did see other rigs in there. I might be rethinking rig setup for the future.
Looking forward to visiting that area! Beautiful! I wish it was a little lower in elevation this time of year. How are the temps and what week were you just there?
You definitely should visit, beautiful area. I arrived there Jan 7 and stayed five nights. The temps weren't bad. High 30's at night and high 50's during the day.
I just came across your videos and like watching them , I plan on mounting a motorcycle to my truck as well and noticed you have had bike mounted on front and back which did you find as the better option ?
I no longer carry my bike in front. After hooking up my bully dawg to my truck which monitors my engine temps, I’ve noticed when I carry it up front, my transmission, oil and coolant temps rise 30 degrees. It’s causing my engine to over heat. I only carry it in the back now.
Tombstone has a family dollar store which is 14 miles from that spot. Benson, 35 miles, has a walmart. I went to Benson a couple times on my motorcycle to restock.
