The guitarist Ed O'Brien revealed in an interview that this album was originally not intended to be released. The album started out as an experiment to loop samples the band created in a custom built software by Jonny Greenwood. At a listening party with friends of these songs, the friends convinced the band that they should make this into a full album. The album is definitely an experiment and Ed mentioned that he felt the album is a bit undercooked and needed more time in the oven to develop properly. The energy of the live versions of these tracks is proof of this,
I'm repeating myself but the "live from the basement" version is worth checking it out! They play the whole album with "real" instruments so you really understand how the process of looping and layering was made, the sound quality is better than in the album version and they played 3 other songs that aren't in the album.
this was my first RH album, so it will always hold a special place in my heart. Because i didnt really have any frame of reference for comparisons i really liked it for what it is .
I had already heard everything they had to offer by the time this album rolled around and I still think it's great! I had only been listening to them for around 5 years though so I wonder how I might have felt if I was a fan from earlier on. Guess that doesn't matter anyway 🤷🏽♀️ I like what I like!
@@deanwolfechannel TKOL was also my first Radiohead album that clicked for me. I had heard In Rainbows beforehand in high school but didn't really understand music at the time. TKOL came out right when I needed to hear something "new." I don't think I'd be a Radiohead fan today had I not found this album in 2011. Bloom, Little by Little, and Lotus Flower immediately struck me as genius and I could hear the Beatles influence throughout the album, which was what I was looking for at the time.
I remember when this came out in 2011, initially I was disappointed with the album - on first listen most songs did not grab me and I felt underwhelmed by the short length of the album. But on repeated listens the second half of the album really grew on me. Separator is one of my favourite tracks.
There's a even better King of Limbs called Anima. Basically a King of Limbs 2.0. It's one of Thom Yorke's solo albums, and I'd say that Anima is one of the best things that Thom Yorke's ever done. It's a great album.
everyone and their mother is going to tell you about the From the Basement sessions but yeah it would be really cool to see you react to that, seeing them play these songs live is amazing
Not one of my favourite Radiohead albums at all, but adore Lotus Flower, Codex, Bloom, and the b-sides The Daily Mail and Staircase. If those 2 tracks were included I would enjoy the record a lot more as a whole. Other tracks just don’t do it for me. Some compositions are a bit dull, have too much restraint for my liking, wish they went brighter, louder, bolder (it’s my main gripe with the other tracks here and on a lot of A Moon Shaped Pool). Although I do agree with others that the From The Basement session does give those others tracks I don’t care for much more vigour and life, and gave me more of an appreciation for them. When I first heard Bloom back in 2011 I was blown away. Was not expecting Radiohead to do a dreamy, Electro-Afro beat track! So good! Although, I think Thom is a big fan of Fela Kuti. A lot of fans prefer the From The Basement Version of Bloom, but it’s apples and oranges really. I much prefer the album recording. Thom’s vocals, the arrangement, production just stand out so much. Lotus Flower is their best pop track since Karma Police. Might be my favourite Thom vocal performance. Codex is beautiful. A lot of my favourite Radiohead tracks are the piano cantered ones. Thank you for another great reaction!
Am not sure why so many are recommending Basement over the album. There’s so much detail there on the album. The only thing it does have over the album are the songs they left off: The Daily Mail and Staircase. Two of their best ever songs imo.
Have you heard of the Pixies? They've influenced so many 90s bands, including Radiohead. Bowie even called them 'chaotic Beatles.' I suggest checking out their debut album Surfer Rosa. I Would love to see your thoughts on the album. Cheers
I just have a tough time with this album it sounds robotic and I am not crazy about the overall production and sound. However I love the way more groovy and organic sounding basement session I know I am like a broken record but you must listen to the session yourself and you get to watch it which is very cool. They pull off all these intricate songs beautifully live in fact much, much better than the studio record.
I think the "Live in the Basement" album sessions was superior to the original release. My second least favorite Radiohead record but there are still some good bops in here
Bc this album isnt that enjoyable. Ive maybe listened to this record twice since the day I bought it in 2011. Just not a fan. Live versions so much better

^^ This!!
They should release that session in an album.
Yeah, bloom is much nicer from the basement, imo. It's just looser and more organic, free, more energetic and lively which really helps it.
@@richardadesmond mmm yummy buzzwords, you're right tho😂
@@AngeloAbelasend them a tenna and record it of RUclips..😊
Bloom live is incredible
Yes it is and a bit proggy as well.
Wow so glad you've enjoyed the first song, Bloom is my favorite Radiohead song!
Niceee love Bloom it's super underrated
@@radiofoot1035 Honestly I like the live/solo version more, but it is a great song.

I like digging into bandcamp lately just to do some exploring in the wilds. Was surprised to find RH had a presence there as well

Let's enjoy this!
Had not listened to Magpie in a long while and actually quite enjoyed the background sounds. And Colin's basslines and insane on there too!

My 4 tracks off this album are played on repeat every night while I sleep. Masterpiece. Knew you would be intrigued
The daily mail is my favorite song from these sessions that didn’t make it onto the album. Recommend looking up that song as it completes tkol for me

I love stories like that. So does Radiohead too I guess
Bloom and Little By Little live are epic and the bonus tracks are also great you are going to love Thoms John Lennon song (The Daily Mail).

Two different experiences. When asked, I tell people to listen to the album first and then From The Basement so they can appreciate the differences.

From the basement is the way into this album
I also get the strokes in track 2

i dont undertand why some people put this album below to pablo honey , is not best radiohead album but not the worst .. just feel incomplete
Codex alone is better than all of Pablo.

Live versions so much better
@@sydIRISH I have to agree the robotic nature annoys me and it is the worst produced Godrich Radiohead album (to me).
@@sydIRISH I dont listened in a long time but saying that is worst than pablo honey is wrong
@@jorgekech Perhaps if you like simpler songs and have a fondness of 90s grunge, then Pablo Honey is better, otherwise King of Limbs wins.
As with every reaction to this album, I'm compelled to say...*watch the "from the basement" performance of "Bloom"!!!*
Take a listen to the From the Basement version of The King of Limbs, IMHO, it´s better than this studio version.
a few have said so
