  • Troubleshooting a computer can be frustrating, especially when the solution doesn't even appear to be related to the symptom. Today I show you how I solved a very weird problem with my test bench.

    This reminds me of that feeling you get when you know a mechanical hard drive is failing and the whole system just doesn't respond right, even if you have done a drive check and not found any errors. You just know it's not right.

      @Stephen Thompson Sorry about that :-) I don't know about SSD's as I've never tried it, but running a speed test that plots a graph was a trick I always used to use, if you get consistent large transfer rate drops in the same place it can indicate a potential problem in that area of a mechainical drive. Usually SMART picks this stuff up now though.

      I have UPS on all of my systems, even my main node for my network has it's own UPS.
      Keep an eye on buy and sell sites, pages, etc. Some people sell off used ones cheap. Some might need new batteries but they can be had for decent prices too. I've only bought one that needed new batteries right away, because they were simply not there. The rest I've bought used or bought as new, never used have served me well.
      To me every system should have a UPS, if not for the power back up, then for the power filtering at least.

    • @Chebornek
      @Chebornek 6 лет назад +3

      If you can afford a $1200 to $2400 build, you should afford a $130 ups.

    • @reddragon27284
      @reddragon27284 6 лет назад +1

      Cheb Ornek to be honest you can often pick up a half decent UPS for free and just feed some batteries into it. I work in an IT department for a large organisation where we have equipment rotation and replacement policies where old kit is replaced even if it is fully functional. Some of it goes on eBay but a lot of it is either given away or recycled. The UPS I use on my home bench is an APC SmartUPS 1500 that is better than any £100 UPS and only cost me £50 for the batteries.
      Have a chat with local companies and see if they have anything going. I’m sure most people would rather see the old kit go to someone who can use it rather than get wasted.

    Glad you made this video, hope more people notice it. The 1803 update messed with a lot of my personalization settings in Windows when I updated, and it got to the point that even if I tried changing the settings the window would automatically close every time I tried to get things back to where they were. These were small and very immediate things, but they were enough to make me revert back to my previous version of Windows, which had everything back the way I set it, working and running like a charm (pun not intended). The idea that someone would have to update their BIOS, even going as far as clearing CMOS, just to get a new Windows update to work fine (?) is quite ludicrous and way beyond what the average consumer would either be willing or able to do on their own.

      Not such a bad idea if you figure out it's the mobo that's causing the issue. However, if it's the GPU then... oooh. that's gonna cost big. £600 for a 1080Ti and the AMD equivalent is not much cheaper.
      Oh wait... the OP was talking about throwing out the WHOLE PC? No no no no. The case alone cost well over £120. I thought he meant throwing out the diagnosed 'bad' parts!

  • @wiebowesterhof

    I had a laptop continually shut down and restart until I did a forced BIOS update. That was on a Dell. On another laptop, it was taken to an 'expert' who uninstalled the Optimus/NV drivers and didn't re-seat the GFX & CPU heatpipes properly (left the old compound on).
    These videos are awesome because even if you're experienced in troubleshooting, you may be one of the few people that has shared that knowledge here. There are a lot of people that just give up or throw away the drive. That would have ended up pretty costly, especially as in this instance, the problem wasn't the drive, cables (power/data).
    Appreciate you putting this up.

    Had the exact same problem about a year and a half ago on a Z77 board. Tried everything except BIOS update, then chalked it up to bad SATA ports or something and upgraded to Skylake platform, mainly to see what NVMe was about. After seeing this, I dusted off my old Z77 and tried updating BIOS as suggested - and voila, works beautifully, not a single lockup since. Thanks, Jay.

      Try updating your soundcard drivers, if that does not work go on eBay, and pick up a cheap USB soundcard. I was having popping issues with my onboard sound with a computer I built for work not to long back salvaging an old but good MSI AMD AM2+ board running Cloudready OS(open source chrome OS), and the $2.99 USB sound card did the trick no problem when plugged directly into the motherboard. Just get one that's HD Audio compliant so it will work out of the box on just about any OS XP, or newer.

    @JayzTwoCents Thank you for posting this video. I was troubleshooting my 2nd PC for the past two weeks. Updating my BIOS finally fixed the problem! I also initially thought there was something wrong with the SSD, SATA cable or power supply. But when they all worked when I plugged them on my 1st PC, I thought my motherboard was broken. I tried different things and went thru hours of trial and error before I ran out of ideas on how to get my PC to boot. Good thing this video popped into my newsfeed this morning.

    I know how you feel Jay, yesterday I set my procODT to 60ohms and it was so unstable I had to reset the CMOS. Since then my motherboard wouldn't accept the correct voltage I'd input e.g. I'd set 1.2v SOC and it would be at 0.925v. The CPU voltage was at 1.437v because of precision boost, as soon as I disabled that it went to 1.097v and my RAM speed wasn't set how I set in BIOS (I set 2933MHz and it was at 3066 when I booted)... This problem still persisted when I reflashed the bios too. To fix this I had to remove a stick of RAM and then reset the CMOS and boom everything back to normal... Crazy!

    • @MrSleepless87

    • @C0manso
      @C0manso 6 лет назад

      My point exactly, I have no idea how it worked either! It's an Asus X370 Prime so one of the cheaper X370 boards, so chances it's just a BIOS bug. It was so crazy to see that fix it out of all things, and to think procODT would screw it that much too.

    • @C0manso
      @C0manso 6 лет назад

      I think those voltages are also like safe boot or stock values too, they just wouldn't move no matter what I did (until the solution above) since my DRAM was also stuck at 1.2v.

    It would still be weird that your BIOS couldn't see the SSD, but it could explain why Windows would have issues if AMD drivers were installed on an Intel system.

    That is awesome to see, Recently I ran in to the same issue with 2 of my rig and I was about to just duke nukem the thing because I ran through windows trouble shoots and hardware trouble shooting, until I dug deep and went looking in to things that may have ended up missing or so in the BIOS, sadly before I realized that that was the issue I had already ordered an SSD for one of the rigs thinking that it was its old HD that failed but that was something that I was planning to do to that rig anyways later on. But yeah, it ended up being just what you went through. Kinda nice to see that this was not just a stroke of bad luck and that possibly other people have ran in to this issue and all.

    I'm at this point currently... lol
    Built a PC for my brother for Christmas last year. Got it running, everything was going great, but one of the USB 3.0 headers wasn't working. Ok, RMA'd the board, they shipped it back, installed it and did updates and played a couple games to make sure it was working.
    I restarted the system for a Windows update, and either during shutdown or start up the system froze. Not Windows, to my knowledge, but the PC itself somehow. All the fans were on, but nothing on the monitor. I held the power down and the system wouldn't power down... So I turned the PSU off manually. The system would never start again.
    I RMA'd the board again, got it back this week, and did a box-top build. Same symptoms when I jump it, the lights flash and it doesn't turn on. I have to power-cycle the PSU.
    I hooked only fans to the PSU and then jumped it, and it ran the fans just fine... So now I'm not really sure where to go. It might be a PSU issue, or potentially the CPU... Kinda stuck, but looking forward to troubleshooting the issue. I just wish I had more hardware I could try out to eliminate stuff.

    • @grindle2000
      @grindle2000 6 лет назад +23

      i would try replacing the PSU (even if you have to borrow one ) I would bet that the PSU is bad ...it doesnt take much to run some fans ...just to check unplug everything (HD, fans (not cpu fan) and see if it will start then , if it does I would say the PSU is not sending enough power to run everything

    Nice video. This is basically my routine when I troubleshoot any PC. First checking when it worked and what happened before it stopped working. Then checking for this that could cause the problem and isolating it by testing. sometimes you get lucky and are on the right track from the start, sometimes it is something so obscure, that you wouldn't have thought about it in the first place.
    This brings up the idea of a troubleshoot video series. A PC with a problem and the problem is described. Then the audience has some time to think about how to fix it and then the solution is shown. After all practice and experience is the A/O of troubleshooting ;)

    What it happens to me is very strange, sometimes when i turn on my pc for some reason it tries to boot on my external HDD which is weird because i dont have the external as an optional booting device, and therefore it says bootmanager not found, but i know how to fic it and is by restarting my pc and disconnect the external HDD.

    This is what happens when people do not read instruction manuals. Motherboard manufacturers always and i mean ALWAYS recommend that the owner of the board updates to the latest BIOS (boards are not always shipped with the latest BIOS) and to always periodically check the motherboard board manufacturers website for any BIOS updates for your board because doing so prevents problems like you witnessed in the video.

      I think this type of error had to do something with security patches (spectre bug), thus they had to change a lot architecturally that needed a BIOS update too. Very specific.
      In most cases, if you have a 3-5 month older bios than the launch (version 1) bios, you might be pretty much fine for the rest of lifetime.

    • @MikeHanson
      @MikeHanson 6 лет назад +8

      Every motherboard I've owned, an MSI and two ASUS stated in the manuals that they don't recommend updating the BIOS unless you are having issues. Page 3-25 of the user manual for the CH7 if you were wondering.

    • @laptech8272
      @laptech8272 6 лет назад +4

      @Brandon, no, that is and has always been the wrong advice. Anyone who believes what you wrote is faking being big into computers. Technology moves fast and you have to move fast with it.
      A motherboard can take a multitude of different parts all of differing specifications. As the individual parts keep improving, so does the operating system (OS) because the OS has to be updated to work with these ever changing parts. It will then get to the point where everything has been updated BUT the board BIOS, it is still creaking along on V1.0 while everything else has surpassed it till eventually it gives out.
      People who are 'Big' into computers are very pro-active. They make sure everything in their system is constantly updated to prevent any issues occurring. Those who are re-active, (wait for an issue to occur) they are the lazy computer enthusiasts. They wait for a fault/issue to occur then spend hours/days fault finding the problem, only to find it to be something they should have done weeks/months ago.

  • @Tomiply

    Not updating the BIOS is an old saying. These days, you should absolutely update the BIOS to get rid of any potential issues that might happen.

    • @photonboy999
      @photonboy999 6 лет назад +13

      I disagree.
      If you don't have any issues, don't upgrade your BIOS.

    • @jdchen003
      @jdchen003 6 лет назад +3

      Thing is, if you get a Spectre/Meltdown attack, you might not notice an issue. If you have no security concerns, then that's ok.

    • @photonboy999
      @photonboy999 6 лет назад +1

      I would hope that the BIOS update section would specify Spectre and/or Meltdown updates or at the very least say "security updates" which I would apply... but if you see something like just "memory compatibility updates" (new DDR4 profiles) or other things which likely don't affect you, AND you have no obvious issues I'd stay away from BIOS updates.
      I used to recommend them, but I've since learned to follow the Don't Fix It If It Ain't Broken mantra.

    • @vonkruel
      @vonkruel 6 лет назад +2

      If you're having no issue it's best to look at what issues the newer firmware is supposed to resolve, and don't risk flashing it unless those fixes would actually help you. The only exception I make to that is old mainboards that probably aren't receiving any more firmware updates. I tend to roll the dice & do the update, because then the board will (probably) have the newest firmware for the rest of its life.

    Potentially dumb question alert: It sounds like almost right out of the gate you had traced the problem to a bad Windows update that created a conflict with the older Bios in your motherboard. So my question is, since you already had that as a working theory, why didn't you try to roll back your Windows updates using a restore point from before you downloaded the update you were already suspicious of, in order to see if that solved the problem rather than jumping through all of those hoops?

      Windows has a nasty habit of reinstalling updates after rolling back, and in some cases wont even let you uninstall updates. Plus he had to clear his cmos just to have the ssd recognized and chances are the uninstall would fail anyway. This exact issue hit me last week as well. It's a real pain considering I have so many blockades to delay win updates until after the bugs are recorded.

    • @dsjamesk
      @dsjamesk 6 лет назад +1

      Your thoughts on rolling back to a previous version of Windows is a good one, I suspect that it never would've worked though because it doesn't look like it took much time at all to completely lock up the system. It probably never would have been able to complete the restore process.
