at first i was like, oh he might’ve just learned a really nice arrangement… but then he started comping behind the solo and started playing rootless voicings when the bass player/band came in 😳😳
Yup thought that also, that it was just a solo piece he'd rehearsed..then he appeared to be "comping" experimenting with the arrangement..can seam too staged if these youngsters can't flex loosen up a little
Holy crap!! I remember going to band camp with this kid. I was 15, he was about 9. Every camper is wearing t shirts, shorts, sandals, etc. This kid came in a suit and tie, EVERY DAY. At a sleep away camp. And proceeded to blow us all away with his piano chops. Crowds formed around him every time he played. So happy to see him earn success and play at such a high level, at such a young age.
The amount of knowledge he has to have about chord progressions, inversions, extensions, jazz progressions etc. beyond just the technical ability to play the instrument is so impressive at that age. I feel like he is too young to even have had the time to have learned all of that information. That is so amazing!
Not trying down play his accomplishments, but if you really push yourself, you could improve a lot in a seemingly short period of time, but you have to practice for hours straight in return
yes and no, I think if you're this deep this young, you just feel and hear what sounds right and what the arrangement asks for, you don't 'have to know what youre doing' to play complex chords etc. that aside, im sure he has a deep understanding of what he does
I love how in sync the older guy is with the prodigy. He saw what directions the kid was going and came in so smoothly it could've been choreographed. Just a show of talent versus experience.
I like the way the band stayed out of the kid’s way. The guitar is just strumming chords, the base is just doing a soft walk and the drummer is using brushes and the high hat and that’s it. Pros.
He's such a natural on the piano and I love how chilled and laid back he is, doing what he loves the most. Its a much more pleasant sound then other kids his age where it feels like a competition to play as quickly and dramatically as possible, which loses the joy of the music.
Amazing young man. Polished and wise beyond his years. His sense of musical rhythm, style and arrangement are truly an inspiration. What a gift to the world replacing the current non-musical talents and noise with real joy to watch and listen!
First time seeing a kid three times younger than myself absolutely kill it on piano without rethinking my life choices. I know this is an old video, but.. wonderfully done.
just awe inspiring. I'm 62 and still learning how to play 1/3rd of what this young prodigy can do without even looking at the piano. Multi-tasking incredibly without missing a beat. Just beautiful. Thank you Tim for sharing. Was that you on the stage as well?
Notice how he said “I like to *listen* to jazz.” Instead of “play jazz”. It is believed that the human brain can naturally pick up human language at a young age just by listening. Young brains can just listen and “build” the language on their own. That’s why we didn’t really need to “study” as babies to learn how to talk and communicate. Language is just interpreting sounds and producing a meaningful responses using a part of our body, like our mouth or hands. Is that not the same as playing jazz in a band? I think this young prodigy really did just spend so much time listening and discovering jazz when he was very little. Jazz is as natural to him as speaking. He just knows what to do when he hears the progressions. And he can to do it without doing calculations, remembering music theory, or relying on sheet music. Pretty cool 😎
That is exactly what was going on when he was a little boy. The only reason why not more young people learn to play so well so early is that 99,9999% of kids don't develop such an interest and curiosity for such music and for playing the piano. Generally only a very, very small percentage of people get such a burning interest in a subject.
> It is believed that the human brain can naturally pick up human language at a young age just by listening yea, that's called acquiring a language. cool stuff, basically parents teach them what to say when they want something, they form the patterns in their brain, pick up nouns of different objects, then it keeps going till they form sentences and acquire the language. And it's so fast because they have to constantly use the language, they get corrected, and gets feedback on whether their sentences are correct almost 24/7, and they don't need to translate it back to their native language like us, to understand things, the intuition is just built as they go
Fantastic talent, the passion, the freedom, the love and respect for the style, the connection between both piano players and all the other musicians. So organic, so effortless, so free. PURE JAZZ! This performance embodies everything that jazz is. My favorite moment is 1:45 when Brandon invites Monty to a little musical game of Q&A. He looks at him like "C'mon you are not gonna join me" Delighful!
I’m blown away by how young this pianist is. This fundamental jazz piece isn’t played often, but is one of a few jazz pieces that are our core. I love that he enjoys the music. His improv is incredible. I would love to have this prodigy piano player revive jazz again. Not many people at his level and genre today.
