Along with having a Mattel action figure and other related merchandise, MC Hammer starred in a 1991 Saturday morning cartoon series called: Hammerman. He was the first rapper to have an album go Diamond (10 million albums sold) and has sold more than 50 million albums worldwide.
MC Hammer won three Grammy Awards in 1990 for Best Rhythm And Blues Song (U Can't Touch This), Best Rap Song (U Can't Touch This) and Best Music Video: Long Form (Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em: The Movie). He also received eight American Music Awards, a People's Choice Award, an NAACP Image Awards and the Billboard Diamond Award. Additionally, MC Hammer has also been honored with the Soul Train Music Sammy Davis Jr Award for Entertainer of the Year in 1991. He has also been a presenter/performer at The Soul Train Music Awards several times including: The 5th Annual Soul Train Music Awards (1991), The 9th Annual Soul Train Music Awards (1995) and Soul Train's 25th Anniversary (1995).
A member of a strongly religious family, Stanley Burrell landed a job as a bat boy for the Oakland Athletics baseball team, where he entertained fans by dancing during breaks in the game, and earned the nickname "Hammer" for his resemblance to all-time home run leader "Hammerin'" Hank Aaron. An aspiring ballplayer himself, he failed to catch on with a professional organization following his high school baseball career and enlisted in the US Navy for three years.
Being a long time a fan of funk and soul music, MC Hammer became interested in Hip-Hop upon returning to civilian life, and began performing in local clubs and with the financial help of several Oakland Athletics players he also started his own record label: Bustin' Records. MC Hammer recorded a couple of popular local singles with ex-Con Funk Shun mastermind Felton Pilate producing the music. MC Hammer recorded an entire album in 1987: Feel My Power. After impressing a Capitol Records executive with his already elaborate live show, he was signed to a multi-album deal, the first of which was a revamped version of the album: Feel My Power, retitled: Let's Get It Started. The album produced an R&B hit with the song: "Turn This Mutha Out," subsequently the album: Let's Get It Started, went double Platinum.

Still, nothing could have foreshadowed the phenomenon of his 1990 album: Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em. Its first single: "U Can't Touch This", became a chart topping hit. "U Can't Touch This" dominated radio and MTV during 1990 in a way few rap singles ever had, and won two Grammys for Best R&B Song and Best Solo Rap Performance. Save for a quirk in its release format- it was only available as a 12", which cut down on its record sales, it would easily have been the first rap single to top the Billboard Pop chart. The next two singles released: "Have You Seen Her" and "Pray", followed "U Can't Touch This" into the Top Ten, eventually pushing sales of Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em past the ten-million mark and making it the number one album of the year. In 1990, MC Hammer also produced and starred in his own movie: Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em: The Movie. The film is about a rapper returning to his hometown who defeats a drug lord using kids to traffic his product.
Despite the success of his 1990 album: Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em, a public backlash was growing against MC Hammer's frequent borrowing-sampling of classic song hooks for his own hits. Hip-Hop purists also railed about his often simplistic, repetitive lyrics. The charges of rank commercialism weren't lessened by the merchandising machine that soon kicked in: endorsement deals, MC Hammer dolls, even a Saturday morning cartoon show. MC Hammer also had a few public rap beefs with other rappers included: LL Cool J, Vanilla Ice, Too Short, Redman, 3rd Bass, Jay-Z, A Tribe Called Quest and Run-DMC. Several diss tracks were featured on his albums including: "Pump It Up", "Better Run Run", "Let's Get It Started" and "The Funky Headhunter".
Seeking to counteract the criticism, MC Hammer dropped the "MC" from his name and used more live instrumentation on his 1991 follow-up album: Too Legit To Quit. While it sold very well- over three million copies, and produced a sizable hit in the album's title track, Hammer's stage show had become as lavish as his lifestyle; loaded with singers, dancers, and backup musicians, the supporting concert tour was too expensive for the album's sales to finance and it was canceled partway through. Hammer scored his last big hit with the song: "Addams Groove", the theme to the 1991 film: The Addams Family, and then paused to reconsider his approach. In 1994, he returned with his album: The Funky Headhunter, a harder-edged, more aggressive record that went gold, but failed to win him a new audience among hardcore hip-hop fans.
MC Hammer attempted to appeal to the rise of "gangsta rap" and signed with Suge Knight's Death Row Records in 1994. However, due to overexposure and critical backlash, his popularity waned by the mid-1990s which led to a highly publicized bankruptcy beginning in 1996. MC Hammer became an ordained preacher during the late 1990s and hosted MC Hammer And Friends, a Christian ministry program on TBN. MC Hammer citing a religious reawakening began to write new material with an emphasis on spirituality and family. His 1998 album: Family Affair, was slated for release on MC Hammer's own Oaktown Records record label but plans were aborted at the last minute and only 1,000 copies were pressed but were never distributed nationally, save for limited Internet downloads. MC Hammer would go on to release new music independently recording four albums from 2001-2009.
MC Hammer has made cameos and/or performed on many television shows including: as Saturday Night Live (as host and musical guest), The Arsenio Hall Show, Amen, For Your Love, Out All Night and Martin. He also made a film cameo in the 1993 Arnold Schwarzenegger film: Last Action Hero. MC Hammer would also go on to appear as himself on The History of Rock 'N' Roll, Vol. 5 (1995). Additionally, he has been involved in movies as an actor such as: One Tough Bastard (1996), Reggie's Prayer (1996), The Right Connections (1997), Deadly Rhapsody (2001), Finishing the Game (2007) and 1040 (2010). He was executive producer of his own reality show titled: Hammertime, which aired on the A&E Network during the summer of 2009.
BET ranked Hammer as the #7 "Best Dancer of All Time". Vibe's "The Best Rapper Ever Tournament" declared him the 17th favorite of all-time during the first round. He continues to perform concerts at music venues and appears in television advertisements, along with participating in social media and ministry/outreach functions. He is also active in youth community programs.
In 2022, Bobby Brown claimed that he started wearing the "diaper pants" that MC Hammer altered and made famous, on his A&E show Bobby Brown: Every Little Step.
