Klon Centaur - Is This Overdrive Pedal Really Worth $5000?

  • The Klon Centaur is one of those mythical pedals that price wise has now gone through the roof. This pedal is currently fetching sometimes over $5000 on the secondhand market. I own a couple of Centaur clones but have never played the real thing. In this video, I try a Klon Centaur or the first time to see if it is really worth the $5k price tag.
The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

Unless you are a professional musician who relies on that one tone for your livelihood, no pedal is worth $5k to me. But there is a reason it has it’s reputation, as it does sound truly amazing. But there are so many other pedals that sound amazing in slightly different ways for far less. I’m happy to get 95% of the way there for 95% less money :)

I don't really get that sentiment. If its amazing and it excites your ears and your imagination: just buy it. 1k, 5k, 10k w/e.
If I was as impressed as Paul claimed to be here I would have just bought it. End of. Guys like that probably have 20k of crap lying around they never use. I could easily justify selling off some of the junk in my studio to finance such a purchase.
They aren't made anymore, only 8000 or so were ever made, they do not all sound "mind blowing"..
      Its not going to depreciate.
      No brainer.

There are soooo many klon clones out there it's mind boggling. Some of them are exact replicas.
There is no need to pay that much for a pedal with less than $20 worth of parts in it. When you can buy one that does the same thing in a smaller package for a little over a hundred bucks.

When I got the pedal I noticed it was great . The KTR's sound great and if I was wanting that pure Klon drive , go buy a KTR . I think they are still below $700 on reverb . They have been wrongfully labeled as the cheap " factory" repros .

Sounds great. Eddie Van Halen described himself as a “tone-chaser” and he spent countless hours innovating and experimenting trying to achieve the sound in his head. I think the guitar tone on Mean Street sounds just as good as the tone on A Different Kind of Truth. Different, but awesome. I’m also not about to tell Eddie that he wasted time or money. All that to say this-if that pedal is the closest you can come to the ideal in your head, and you can afford it-more power to you.

It’s ridiculous the hype surrounding the KLON. There’s no magic. There’s plenty of things that sound as good. Finnegan applied the same sales techniques as a certain famous amp builder did. I’ve had 3 of them, sold them all. There are a few neat things going on circuit wise, but other than that …..it’s not magic. It really is just a modified TS. If you by the Rockett Archer you’re getting the same thing. They cloned it verbatim with BF’s approval. It’s like the “D” amp thing all over. These things have been figured out and improved upon.

I guess its about wanting to own something rare. Its like saying every guitar from the 50''s or 60's is better than a newer guitar - sometimes yes, sometimes definitely not. Collectors will always collect, and if they can afford to, great! Players use what gear they have, and make it sound as good as they can. Guitarists like Andy Timmons swear by the Boss Blues Driver - I dont like it, but having heard a few great players play through my gear over the years, they certainly sounded better than me, because of their innate talent. I can't imagine paying 5k for a pedal, its not something I'd find important or life-changing enough. Fascinating to hear you demo it though.

    • @cgavin1
      @cgavin1 Год назад

Agreed. The Klon was on my bucket list though. I'm not getting any younger and there's no pockets in a shroud. 30 years of playing guitars I have only ever come across two "wow" pieces. One, a '77 twin reverb that in any room sounded like a fully mastered cut on every note and a silver non-horsie Centaur s/n 5167. On both ocassions I had to sell everything else I was using at the time to finance the purchase. I have zero regrets. Sometimes experiencing something and having those joyfull memories is worth all the tea in China.

And we found that there is no difference that would justify the originals 4.000€ price.
The circuit is virtualy identical in the chinese one with the diference that it costs 40€.
Finnegan artificialy hyped the price with some fairytale stories how the Klon has some sort of magic germanium stuff. Thats why he covered the circuitboard with that black goo, because its easily replicated and has cheap components that chinese pedal makers can copy without a problem.
What was especialy insulting is the way he wrote on new pedals how the hype was not his own making because it absolutely was.
So no, in my honest opinion the pedal is not worth nowhere near that much. If someone is happy with it, good. But the money could have been spent much more wisely.

There are so many guitarists out there that sound great or even better than this pedal. I don't understand why a pedal would cost more than double compared to a 100 watt tube amplifier. It is undeniable the pedal sounds great but it is not worth $5000. Many American made stuff are so overrated. Practicing 8 hours a day is the secret to making any OD pedal sound great.

Do yourself a favour buy a ceriatone centura, same pedal same components. And if you don't know anything about basic electronics watch Joe at Gray Bench Electronics demystify this pedal and the so called mystical diodes. If not continue with being a slave to the hype. Ps. When anything goes wrong with your gooped klon good luck, there is one on ebay which failed to sell because the charge pump isn't working. Basically a dead gooped over hyped pedal.

Sorry I don’t get it at all. No doubt it sounds great but so do a lot of pedals at less than 10% the price. $5k for a pedal is an absolute joke. I’d rather spend $5k on lessons from someone like Alex Hutchings - and stick to a reasonably priced drive pedal. Or if I’m brutally honest I’d save the $5k so that I can afford to boil my kettle.

Largely an emotional response, I’m hypothesizing. You gents are intelligent. You should be skeptical of a response to non-blind “unobtanium”. Especially when it’s your own response

That pedal or any pedal is only as good as the amp it is played through...or played through a Peavey Bandit that pedal is worthless...so let s all be real about how GREAT this pedal REALLY is...wouldn't pay that price for an amp and wouldnt pay it for a 100-150$ pedal...period.(oh...mystical magical buffer...{PLEASE)
