I'm a firefighter, and from our perspective EV fires are a nightmare, you need thousands of Liters of water to put it out. Also the amount of toxic smoke that comes off Lithium batteries is alot worse the your standard diesel and petrol vehicles. When a lithium battery is put out it could reignite hours/days/weeks later. There must be a way the people can over throw this spas government.

how many EV fires have you attended vs regular car fires though?
Regular cars catch fire all the time (looking at you ford ranger) and no-one bats an eye, EV catches fire and everyone looses their mind! We can thank the media and our conservative culture for that.

The problem is that an ice vehicle is reasonably simple to extinguish, EV's however are not, the lithium fires are intense. Overseas they have to use dunk tanks and leave the EV's submerged for days to make sure they dont re-ignite.@@Typingwithpaws

@@Typingwithpaws because like the firefighter said, ev fires are more dangerous. Very hard to put out and once you do it can reignite. Does that happen to regular cars? So thats why no one bats an eyelid, ev fires are much worse than regular car fires.

Your main argument, "it's not fair!", has the potential to be really compelling, especially coming from someone directly impacted by such changes. This episode could have been impactful, but it often feels like an echo chamber, with repetitive discussions on "what about China," "Australia is only 1%," "it's not sustainable," and references to "the science behind it" without delving into the actual science. Don't get me wrong, I greatly appreciate your work! I just hoped for a more thorough exploration of this topic. - Maybe for the next round table: An outlook on what Australia should look like from your PoV, would be great!

    China has 1.4 billion populations and Aussie 28 million. That’s 1 : 50.
China is the manufacturing hub for the world and it produces all kinds of things that ppl worldwide need daily. That cost fossil fuels. What we produce these days? Kangaroo ???😂
We should think about how to focus on our responsibilities but not pointing fingers to others, especially those countries like China & India who are doing the hard work that western countries no longer want to. For those living under a rock if the new tax goes through, we'll be paying GST, Luxury Car Tax, Emission Tax, Stamp Duty and registration to the Government before we even drive the car off the lot and then we'll be paying a continual stream of fuel excise, more GST, tolls, and yearly rego (not to mention insurance) just to drive around. Reckon the Government is taking more than its fair share of our hard earned dollar. As the driver of both a Tesla EV and a Y62 I can honestly say that I would not buy another EV.
The big so-called benefit of the EV is the cheaper running costs, but what is happening to this saving as power prices continue to sky rocket?
EV's are fine around the city but are frustrating on longer drives. For example I did a run from Brisbane to Melbourne and back in just 3 days with an EV and the time spent charging the thing every 300-400 klms almost drove me mad (it is a Model 3 performance so has the big battery and only gets this sort of range at 110 klm per hr). Give me a petrol or diesel car anyday of the week for a long trip.
If the Government is serious about cost of living let's focus on things that make people's lives better and saves people money (e.g. make solar and batteries cheaper so we can all reduce our usage and bills).
Finally, Australia does not have the charging infrastructure or the excess power generation to support us all having EV's so the Government is definitely putting the cart before the horse on this one.

Im in the EV industry in the UK and everything you are saying is correct:
Extremely dirty to produce from the lithium, where its sourced, packaged and put in to cars the carbon footprint is unbelievable.
They do not last even 10 years, if they do, there pitiful range is often at the very least halved, the batteries to replace them are not just expensive, it is often impossible to replace them so the whole car goes in the the bin.
In real world driving you are very lucky to do more than 70% of the claimed range, in 2024 usually about 300km. If you find a fast charger that's working, its an hour to charge.
They are worthless if you are a private buyer. Due to tech glitches, updates, faults, old technology, poor range and longevity, these things are purely to be leased. However, the residual value is so bad, those costs are now absolutely sky rocketing.
The fire risk. Yes they catch fire less than ICE vehicles, but when they do it is ferocious and cannot be put out, cargo ships, blocks of flats and entire carparks can go up from one EV fire.
While it is a nice thought driving through the town emitting no emissions, that 80-100kwh battery needs to be fed. On public charging it would work out to cost 20L/100km in a petrol (also its only as green as what powers the grid).
Oh and that 600hp 3 tonne vehicle, will deffo make some headlines when these start to be crashed into your Jo's Rav4.
The disposal..... they go in the bin after a maximum of 10 years if you are lucky.
This EV bubble that is exploding with either tax incentives, or ICE tax's is going to burst. It is like a religion that cannot be questioned. But when people see the mess that is the public network, or spend any time and drive an EV any distance at all.
Even in 20 years time the majority of people, who do not have home charging capability will see the big scam for what it is. These EV's are lovely to drive to do boring miles around the city, but even in the UK, this legislation only benefits Londoners.
Just think where the tech would have taken us if we continued to invest and improve ICE vehicles or synthetic fuels.
    James

In NZ, they give you a DEDUCTION on price of an EV, rather than charging you more for a normal petrol or diesel vehicle. Incentive rather than punishment.
Also, the infrastructure for EV charging in Australia is waaaay off. You are lucky to get petrol or diesel in some places, let alone a charging station every 400-500km!!!

Not quite right, NZ (where I live) had a tax on vehicles with higher emissions and used this to fund a subsidy for low and no emission vehicles. This tax and subsidy arrangement was recently taken away by an incoming Government with the justification given as it was no longer needed as the low / no emission vehicle market had enough momentum.

    So a few points here:
-Just because we are responsible for 1% of emisisonss, doesn't mean we don't have a responsibility to be better. Our emissions per capita are among the worst. What's wrong with wanting to do better?
    - EVs are better for emisions long term. There's plenty of research that shows the break even point for them is around 60k km. The upfront emissions cost may be more, but if the Breakeven point is earlier then you can't argue with the math. Sure the grid still relies on fossil fuels, but as that shifts that will be less or an issue. ICE cars will always use petrol/diesel
    - you're talking like engines and diffs don't need rebuilds every so often, those are both big costs. An engine could easily be the price of a battery
    - precious governments have failed to keep Australian car standards up to speed with other countries. This is just catching up. Plus it's not a tax, it's an incentive for companies to do better and reduce their vehicles emissions. 4wds are already crazy expensive, I strongly doubt manufacturers want to have to pass on more costs. In two years this won't be an issue
    - there's plenty of ways for tradies to transport their gear around other than big 4wds. There's plenty of options available and it wasn't that long ago that HSV and Ford utes were the flavour for utes.
    - Recycling does need to improve and it will. Again, Australia is behind due to lack of care, but we will get there
I love your content, and love 4wding. I just think this conversation is way more nuanced than how you're phrasing it. I'm sure this comment will go down like a lead balloon, but yolo. Love the videos generally boys

Efficiency is such a key word and concept that is overlooked in this debate.
Internal combustion engines have come such a long way over the years now to the point where they can run on the smell of an oily rag by comparison to yesteryear.
If we truly want to lower emissions from the food we eat, the cars we drive, the homes we live in etc, efficiency should be the key driver. Why is my dinner caught in NZ, send to Thailand for packaging, and then sold in an Australian supermarket at a price that does not reflect the inefficiencies the manufacturer has exploited to make more money? What about charging an EV, from a non-renewable energy source, and the inefficiencies in the generation, transportation and storage of that power?
If I owned a house with solar panels, battery banks and a garage to charge my EV in, well then we’ve achieved the end goal. But the reality is the charging network predominantly sources energy from non-renewable sources, and there lies the hypocrisy of it all.
We should be a nation driven by fact and reason, striving for maximum efficiency. If the task is a farmer who needs transportation that suits the purpose, well then they should be financially incentivised to do that as efficiently as possible. If a ford ranger is the most efficient way to achieve that goal, then they should be even cheaper.
    My two cents.

My 93 Hilux 10l/100, my 2011 Collie 10l/100 , Dad's D22 10l/100. I suspect it's a similar story with the current utes. More power but similar economy. Smell of an oily rag? Surely if you have solar panels and you charge your EV
Saturday or Sunday you wouldn't need a battery. Plus then you're paying less for power as well. I don't know man. There's a lot of people in Australia with solar panels, are they all getting duped? And I mean saying that the network uses mainly fossil fuel to produce electricity, while currently true is rapidly changing. And EVs are still cheaper to run while that transition is happening. It does seem to me that it is still very intensive to manufacture an EV, and they are expensive to repair which is influencing insurance prices. They also can't cover some parts of the market's needs. But that's ok. I'm going to keep my RC Colorado for many years to come, by which time, I reckon there's going to be an alternative.

A while ago Ukraine was thinking about trying to import a lot of utes (second hand) from here because there just are almost none in Europe, and now that they are in the middle of a war they have suddenly realized that utes and off road vehicles are very useful things to have around when things go wrong. Off road vans are even more useful (as ambulances), unfortunately they are even rarer. Now I know you can make utes electric however I'm not sure how many working charging stations they have in bombed out cities over there at the moment. I do think the ultimate in resilience would be to have a mix of both, as electric vehicles can be charged with solar etc but for right now diesel is the best we have (for disasters).

I've only recently started getting into the 4wd scene after watching you boys the last few months. I've been putting together my dream Hilux setup and build. To hear that I'm going to be taxed for purchasing and building a vehicle that will help me explore this beautiful country we call home, really is a kick in the guts.
Like you said, the reason we have these vehicles and do these tracks is to get out there and explore and in fact helps mitigate issues that otherwise aren't spoken about. A lot of hardworking folks, especially in far north Queensland and remote areas of the country rely on people with such vehicles in order to generate their tourism income. I'm all for saving helping the environment but I'm not schlepping an EV Hummer on the old tele track.

Because it's not real. the government wants to introduce fuel efficiency standards, which have already been adopted in all other developed countries including the us. it means car makers will be penalised for not selling fuel efficient cars. car makers are saying this means they might have to increase prices to cover this penalty, but in the US prices of trucks and other large cars didn't increase and thousands are still sold. This is where this lie of a "ute tax" comes from. The whole idea is that aussies have a better range of fuel efficient cars to choose from like they do elsewhere in the world.

The amount off misinformation in this video is mind blowing! NVES is not a tax, it’s there to encourage car makers to make more efficient cars(including utes/4wd). Manufacturers will get fined if their average is above the target. So, if they can sell small EV for city drivers, they can use credits from them to offset the emissions of vehicles that are above target.
Maybe you should read the proposal before you go putting out videos like this.

I do remote work up in the Top End. I cant see any EV on the market that would suit as a replacement to my Hilux. On more than one of my routes, my 1st job is 1000km from home. With a couple of toilet breaks i can do the trip in around 11 hours. I'm guessing an EV would take me a couple of days? And the charging stations in the outback would likely be run by Diesel generators. Outside of Darwin, Alice and Katherine, i think every other community in the NT runs in part on Diesel Generators.
One popular remote track is the Central Arnhem Highway that runs through to Gove. Bulman is the last fuel stop before Gove and its 470km. Sure, EVs can do 470km in one hit.... but on a nice flat bitumen road. Now try it in a high clearance 4wd EV on a dirt track with washouts, sand, bulldust and corrugations. Are they going to need to build a recharge station at the halfway point and hope that it never gets vandalised or have the diesel stolen by the locals.
Why tax me $15k when im using my vehicle to do remote work... im not using it for cruising round big cities and its not a lifestyle choice. Its my work vehicle.

Its called demand destruction. It happend during the oil shock in the late 1970's when governments said that the easy to drill crude oil is going to run out and raised the price of oil to make it too expensive to run the fuel guzzling V8's of the time. They also raised the cost of rego and government interference for manufacturers on V8 cars. To get around this manufacturers then introduced the term SUV's into the market because utility vehicles were cheaper to register as V8 cars became more expensive. V8s also became more fuel efficient as time went by. Australian Lithium (LIT) is a company that has patented SiLeach technology that recycles Lithium batteries.

I'd like to mention something that has been burning me for a while and that is the cost of diesel. think back before Covid, diesel was marginally cheaper than petrol. Covid came along and the Govt reduced the fuel levee by 20c per litre but diesel did not go down. Post Covid the govt increased the levee by the 20c per litre and BINGO up went diesel by 20c per litre. Why? They didn't drop the fuel levee on diesel, but up it went by 20c. Is this the fuel companies gouging diesel fuel vehicle owners? Have I missed something? Why have organisations like NRMA been so quite about it. They usually crow about everything?

A LOT of mischaracterizations here in and in the comments.
For reference: I own both a 4x4 OffRoad truck and a Tesla, I love both for different reasons.
    1. EVs are statistically much less likely to catch fire than ICEs. Yes they are different and sometimes harder to put out. Not proving any points about anything by bringing this up.
    2. EV batteries are rated to 80% of capacity out to 200k miles. You take care of them, you can drive them a VERY long time without needing a replacement.
    3. There are companies that specialize in lithium battery recycling and reuse. They have fairly good reclamation rates. If batteries end up in landfills something went very wrong. See point 2. This is a much smaller problem than people seem to think it is.
    4. EVs are more environmentally friendly than ICE vehicles after about 15k miles. Accounting for mining, assembly, batteries, energy generation, everything. An EV will emit less than 1/4th as much as an ICE during it's life... Including everything.
    5. Yes I agree with your premise that this tax is dumb. ICE trucks are needed for a very long time... obviously. Anyone who thinks otherwise is, as my pop would say, "as sharp as a marble". No reason to peddle false narratives about EVs to try and make a counter point to this dumb policy. It's just a dumb policy that should never have been proposed. can we leave it at that?
