FREE SCRAP SHED. CABIN PROJECT #4

  • In this video, I am using all the free scrap wood I can find on my cabin property to make my shed. Choosing to do this makes the construction complicated and time-consuming. But, it is so fun to do. Figuring out how to fit all the weird pieces together is really cool and it makes for an awesome-looking cabin.

It doesn’t matter that the shed is not “perfect “….. it’s perfect for you and your needs and that’s all that really matters. I love that you used what you had on site and didn’t just let the materials go to waste.

It's a sin to let the plywood rot or to burn it. Use it.

Jay a roll of tyvek will weather proof the outside of the shed.
Also an idea. Some sheds and outhouses in Alaska use the corrugated pvc panels on the roof to let natural light in and the snow slides off.
    Cheers

Jay, this video was my favorite. You are figuring things out as you go along and not being wasteful. I love that you are being frugal and showing your internet family how things can be recycled and repurposed to make something new. I was so happy throughout this video and was talking to you (my laptop) as you made one decision after the other. Then you capped it all off by figuring out the propane issue. I actually gasped when the pilot lit up. YOU ROCK!!!

One think I will mention is all that good lumber you have, I recommend you pile it straight, neat and flat, or else it’s gonna be warped too when you get to it.

Great job on the shed Jay. By the way, whenever you disconnect the propane bottle each time you will need to bleed off the air that gets into the line between the bottle and the stove. And the best way to do that is to turn the knobs on all the way for 15-20 seconds until you get rid of the air, then it will light. The pilots won't light either till this is done.

You made a sensible choice between a pile of lumber beneath the cabin and a shed. Don't worry about the patchwork design, a coat of paint and nobody will notice.
Next challenge is figuring out how to frame a doorway into the remaining wall. You're going to learn a lot from that. 🙂

Great job there on the shed Jay. You might want to put some kind of flashing tape over the gaps to help seal up the shed. Now I do not know how much you want to spend on that shed, but you can put a product called Liquid Rubber Waterproof Sealant on the sides of your shed. The stuff is meant to waterproof basements, and other things or you could just get a roll of asphalt roofing to use on the side it is basically how they use to weather proof old box houses back in the late 1800's into the 1930's.

Hey just an FYI on you comment on todays video regarding the short screw. Rule of thumb is going into at least 1/2 of what you are fastening down. So if the wood is 3/4 the nail or screw should be at min 1-1/2”. Hope that makes sense.

You might want to look into getting some kind of weatherproofing to wrap around the outside so the contents of the shed won’t get damaged.
