FIXING A FROZEN SNOW CABIN. IT BEGINS

- In this video, I am working in my frozen snow cabin. I have a beautiful hand-crafted oven that goes with the hand-made stove. But I need to cut my stove pipe for the oven to fit. This means freezing my beard and working with cold iron before I can start the stove and warm things up. But I love every second of it. Working in the cold is very rewarding and once that stove fires up, life is great!

You can just add plywood or a 1 by 8 to the face of that 2x8 as a shim to flush up the edge and attach thru to the 2x8. Another option would be to just use a circular saw and flush cut the plywood, but that will make a heck of a mess with sawdust flying everywhere. Looks like a great cabin thanks for taking us along
Exactly what I was going to say ~ He could've also shimmed and braced the wobbly joist and ran the railing through it to tie everything together sturdy enough for leaning on... but since he sawed it off, a plywood end-cap would get everything flush again and give him a sturdy nailer for railing and beyond... it's a lot of cutting tho... so I'd probably go with a 2x
Or notch the ply where the post will be if you don’t want to rip the face off
Or just nail the 2x8 back on you cut off
Also, is there (or do you need) blocking under the stretch of boards to make the loft stronger?
@@jamesread11yeah mate your spot on there. I’m a chippy and I would be notching that ply too……quick and easy!
You should drill a small hole in the door of the oven and install a BBQ thermostat to give you an idea of the baking temperature. Also setting up a hot tent with the old stove from the cabin for storing wood and parking the snow machine in so when the temp really drops it would be easier to get it started
One tip on the biscuits is if you place them butt up against each other they will rise higher and make for a flakier biscuit. I always bake my homemade rolls and biscuits with this method.
The two floor joists were there for the railing posts to go down between. Then fastened from each side to give you a solid post. Then fill in on top between the posts with 1x6” pine.
Now when the railing post is fastened to the remaining joist it will flex . You can install solid blocking between the remaining joist and the next one back to stabilize the remaining front joist .
I appreciate your channel I used to go camping With my wife and daughters Something bad happened 2009They are no longer on this earth That was the last time I went camping Been a long time With your videosIt helps me Remember good memories With my family Thank you
I’m so sorry!!
I too am sorry but memories live on and be strong you will see them again…
I’m so sorry that happened to you😢 It’s nice that you get some pleasure from these videos. Wishing you the best!
I appreciate all your kind words thank you
So sorry for your loss
The redo on the cabin will definitely tease your memory and ability to change it. The end result will make a super place for you and your lady friend to share.
Glad the stove/oven worked out for you because I would hate to see a grown man cry. I almost cried when you threw the fish back...lol. I've never thrown a fish back, but I understand why you did it. Looking forward to your cabin improvements. Stay safe and warm my friend.
That always kills me when they throw the fish back. I grew up eating fish, if it was as big as my hand I ate that thing no matter what.
@@williammeek7218 Yeah, I know, me too. We were very poor and sometimes all we ate until my dad got paid was the fish we caught at the creek or river. I'm 67 and still love to fish and eat what I catch.
Jay, you need all the credit for doing these projects in the extreme cold. We get to enjoy them in the warmth of our homes. Thanks so much for the awesome content
My sincere pleasure
Jay, the floor joist that you removed had 2 purposes when complete and anchored. 1) extra support to prevent floor sagging over time, and 2) provides a surface to attach the rail.
I bet the gap was designed anchor the actual railing posts.
You still would’ve had to deal with the overhang on the floor sheeting!
Jay…I’ve been a mechanic/fixer upper all my adult life. I currently am QC at a major airline. I would always prefer to ask a man or woman to slow down and contemplate than trying to get another type of person motivated. So have at it young man…you have what it takes.
Good morning from Miami. Nothing better than watching your video while sipping coffee on Monday morning.
Keep doing great work, I’ve been following you since beginning 👍🏻
I loved this video so much. As a kid I would watch my father work on and fix up multiple houses and it left me with a great love of the craft. Making something out of nothing, seeing everything come together. I don't have the skills myself sadly, but I respect and appreciate them immensely. This is wonderful work you're doing here, and my father and I both loved watching it. All the best to you, and good luck and steadfast progress on this goal.
Nice job hooking up the stove n pipe
Loved watching you set up the tent, can't wait to see what you do with the cabin.
With the loft Jay, I would start by insulating the walls and ceiling. Only 5/8 between you and nature. Then move to adding trim and accents.
Cool Ice fishing Woot! Nice Pike! Notch your post or add osb , plywood or pine to make where your post sit flush 🌝
Watching you making something like stovies (Scottish dish) and my mouth is watering. Thank you for sharing
Jay, your videos are always so crystal clear and the camera work is awesome. I love at the 0:20 second mark, the snow lightly falling, looking like orbs nearer to the camera. Cool shot!
Thank you Jay 👊🏻👍🏻 Hope all works out ok, great to have the stove and oven going 👍🏻Stay safe and take care my friend 🙏🏻God Bless
Appreciate you!
Thanks Jay I enjoy your videos and I enjoy going with you on your trips. I’m disabled and can’t get out.
Bolt the board you cut down to the front of the board with the plywood overlap. That will make the double thick 'rafter' stick out beyond the plywood and also provide additional weight bearing capability for the loft floor (thicker boards support more weight over the same span). Bolt it in several places so the two boards act as a single board. Easy-peasy, and you've already got the second board to use, just add bolts and a bit of elbow grease.
Another thought would be to put one of your smaller russian bear tents over your fishing hole to get you out of the wind while you're angling. Might even be able to put a small stove in there to keep you warm(er) while you're at it. See if you can find a long handled ladle to use for scooping ice out of the hole too.
Another great video. A clever modification to the stove pipe. The added oven adds so many cooking/baking options. It will be interesting to see you prep and cook a fish next time. Just when I get comfortable watching...you're leaving! It's always fun to watch you having fun.
Good morning, February 11th Stay warm👍NC

Yeah! Jay has a video! My day is made.
You made me laugh when you said "I thought about it for 3 minutes".😂😂😂 I just love your innocence and sincerity. You're not afraid to fail and learn. I've watched you from the beginning and I've seen how you've progressed. Hard work does pay off.
You're amazing 👏 ❤
nice video.....somehow once you caught the pike, I had a brief image of you building a smoker and having some smoked pike and cream cheese on a bagel
Now I have this image. Thank you.

Corn beef hash !!
One of the staples in my life growing up here in the maritimes
It's delicious
My mum used to cook us it when we were kids and I still have it to this day with baked beans 🍽️🏴
Hey jay, just wanted to say i really really enjoy your channel. absolutely one of my favorites.
Love this comment. Thanks Paul
Hi Jay make sure you 3 ply beam when you put upstairs so you have enough nailing Power to fasting down things😊 I am a Framer I build new 🏡 😊 still Love that Cabin ❤😊
Luke from the outdoor boys is the reason why i came across your channel Jay, once i found his winter videos i decided to see what else was out there and found your channel, ive been subscribed for 6 months give or take and i love what you do, im from the UK and we dont really get the winters you get, and i absolutely love how relaxing your videos are, plus its so intresting to me. I now can't wait for every video you post.
Keep up the good work and thank you
Congratulations JAY ❤ with your PIKE CATCH. 🎣. how COOL was that ..
LUCKY fish 🐟 to see another day..
I have been one of your subscribers for a long time.. absolutely enjoy your channel..❤

I really like your video and how excited you were about biscuits in your oven so happy can’t wait to see what you do next. Have a good one
Love your videos and enjoy watching them every time. May the lord bless and protect you Jay working at the cabin
The music and the drone shots make these videos so chill and relaxing. Thanks for sharing the cabin Jay.
I had to look back how I've been watching and it was the lowrider truck camper days. What I love about your channel is your willingness to just try and figure out how you can enjoy the outdoors and out of the way places with just regular people skills. Keep doing it!
First thing I was saying to you was add a steel leader to your jig! Then my jaw dropped as that pike head with open jaws came up out of your hole! 😮❤🎉 They are toothy critters for sure! Way to go man! Been wanting for you to go fish there for so long! Thank you!
I was one of those ones who watches but wasn't subscribed.... you've shamed me into subscribing! 😂😂
Hi jay, I’ve been a subscriber for a while now and I love seeing your episodes pop up on my feed, I wish we had snow like you over here in wales 🏴 GB keep the content coming, thank you for your videos 😀😀😀😀🏴🏴🏴
Good to see you at your cabin again and have a lot of fun.😊🎉🎉😉🫠🙃🙂👍👍👍👍👍🙏🦶🦶👊👊👊
Love your videos Jay you are absolutely amazing working in that extreme cold , wish I was there with you many blessings 🙏💕
Thanks, Jay, for another great video.
Happy to be a subscriber! 👍
I knew you would like those biscuits as soon as I saw you bring them out. Their convenience cannot be beat.
I would encourage you to keep a screen over your fry pan when cooking. In an enclosed space like a cabin, the aerosolized fats will over time coat everything -- walls, windows, ceiling, curtains, everything -- and will be a real pain to clean.
LOVE your channel! Keep up the great work!
Good cooking tips!
I wish you would make longer vids like you did at the tent shack.
Really glad you bought this cabin. So much cleaner! Coming along nicely. I think for us off-grid lovers, the tent and cabin go hand-in-hand. I actually just bought land here in WA and plan to put up a canvas tent to use for sleep/work while I build.
Hello from North Wales uk. Love your videos and all that beautiful snow. Stay warm.
Jay thanks again for great video at the cabin. I am going to try your corn beef, potatoes and onion this weekend. Love how you just cut the pipe and got it done. Looking to more time at the cabin excited to see what you do with the loft.
Jay, you should run a wire leader, the pike have crazy teeth and will shred your line fast! or run really heavy line on the end and always check after catching to make sure its not messed up. Also when you get a bite SET THE HOOK! or your going to loose a lot of fish.
It’s a bummer you can’t get subs up, I look forward to your adventures each week..
I appreciate your reference to the Outdoor Boys channel! I subscribe to both! I love what you are doing! Keep it up Jay!
Awesome video Jay! Man that is great fishing there! Thank you for taking us along and thumbs UP! 👍
Ke makes his own bread. I've never seen him make can't ones. But the caned ones are good too
Great job on this video. I’m really looking forward to seeing more of your adventures. Spring, summer, and fall are all going to be interesting times at the cabin.
I wish I could subscribe more than once. I love the videos. I’m not a big fan of the cold so watching you is kind of nice. Someone else freezing their butt off!! lol!!
Love the videos so keep doing it please!!
Good Morning from Northen Wisconsin. Cold here has well but nothing like where you are, stay warm. God bless ❤
Jay, enjoy your channel and look forward to each episode. Love the cabin
great to see a channel that actually speaks..and english at that.
For your railing, just notch out the plywood and carpet for the vertical posts and then you can add your horizontal rails.
Never thought of that. Thanks
Jay I like your choice of background music. Watching from the Philippines.
Hello my brother, we have the same view of the world. I'm building shelters too! ..🧡
Been a subscriber. Love this channel. I try to end my night in bed watching a video. So relaxing.
Great video like always looking forward to your next adventure ❤❤❤❤❤
A++++ video. Love the channel. The cabin is a great addition to the tent.
Loving the cabin video's Jay, can't wait to see how this massive project for you progresses over the years :)
Figured you were from the east coast with how long you hold your vowels, but I knew it for sure when I saw the corned beef hash. Love it!
That is a very cool oven. I don’t believe I have ever seen one like that. It should serve you well as you get used to it. I like the idea of attaching a thermostat so you can regulate the heat.
Nice to see you actually do some fishing. Never understood why you do not do more of it. Sure is more entertaining then just watching you cook meals, but maybe that's just me:)
Great video Jay! Love the oven, WOW !
Food looks good, i have done that on long backpacking trips.
Jay. You could have pinned the carpet edge back and used your Reciprocating Saw to straighten out that edge. I think you just wanted to go fishing. LOL! Stay safe brother!
Love your video's. No drama no click bait no BS. Just a guy out in the wood's enjoying life👍
Jay, down here in the US South we call those "Whomp Biscuits" because the easiest way to open them is whomp them on the edge of the counter. Love the vids, be well!
Yum yum. Corned beef hash!! Now all you need is a fried egg on top!!
WOW those outside cabin shots 🤩
Love that snow....we have nothing in Minnesota and its driving me stir crazy. Would like to put some miles on my sled.
Great video Jay!! Looking forward to seeing the cabin upgrades!! By the way, those raspberry/apple creme passion flakies were excellent!! Thanks for the suggestion in your previous video. I live in Michigan so I have to order them off Amazon. What a great treat!!
Great video Jay. Keep them coming.
Oh yum! Corn beef hash.
I love how you acknowledge Luke. Crazy Quady acknowledged Steve Wallace. I follow all of you guys including Sam Bananas
I really enjoy watching you.Your very realistic and calming
Great vid...love the progress...explain the flattening of the barb please on the hook...can't wait for the next vid😊
We had those bisquit rolls when I was a kid in the 70s.
An other good video Jay 👍 love from Caroline Butler from UK
Great video Jay! Thanks for sharing!
