- Overview of the SP-8x10 tray processing system. Lets you process 8x10, 5x7 or 4x5 in daylight.
NOTE: this video shows the first production prototype before we added the "finger pockets".

Thank you for thinking of the large format community and providing us with such useful inventions! Amazing!
Wonderful design!!!!
very helpful, thank you
I love this tank. I think it is a really brillant design. The ability to use it for 8X10, 5x7 and 4x5 is really great. I have your SP-445 tank but I usually prefer to develop my 4x5 in this tray. I don't have a 8X10 and bought the tray specifically to process my 4x5. This is the easiest loading 4x5 system (short of developing in trays in the dark). Just great and I thank you for all your work for large format.
Just received mine today! Cant wait to try it out after work
My first concern would be scratching the emulsion and then to a lesser extent, the base.
The bottom of the hold down tabs are angled, they only touch the very edge of the film. The texture on the bottom of the tray is "photo etched" and has very smooth edges. Take a look at the user's guide: cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1273/8933/files/SP-8x10_user_s_guide.pdf?1685
I just received mine this week, and for me it's great with the exception of two things. I love that I can develop 4 sheets of 4x5 with 250ml of developer. When reused once, that's 8 sheets of 250 ml, making shooting e-6 much less pricy than with the sp445! But... The lid is not popping on, or fastened in any way. This makes me a little anxious that I'll somehow will manage to open the lid by accident when moving the tray from my dark room to my kitchen, where I do the development in light, when I
If you're really worried, you can fasten the lid with a couple of large rubber bands. Frankly, once you're more familiar with it, I think your worries will go away.
A suggestion for future videos:
When doing a wide shot, don't point to a small detail and expect everyone to see what you are pointing out. Instead, shoot a close-up then edit in.
Great design, Tim! I love my SP-445 (best 4x5 tank out there, in my opinion). Do you have an estimate for when this 8x10 tank will be available for purchase?
They are in full production right now; hopefully shipping to crowd-funding customers in the next few weeks. On the website before Christmas.
Bravo ! it seems an excellent design! Will you soon post a video showing the actual process of developing a film in the SP 8x10?
Cheers from France
I guess im asking the wrong place but does any of you know of a way to get back into an Instagram account?
I somehow lost the account password. I would love any tricks you can offer me!
@Ezra Joe Instablaster =)
@Dax Eric i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and im waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Dax Eric It worked and I finally got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thanks so much you really help me out!
@Ezra Joe You are welcome :)
What keeps the hold down tabs from scratching the emulsion side during the development?

Some raised bumps on the bottom would prevent flat film from sticking.
True, but we want the film to stick! We're counting on the surface tension to hold the film flat on the bottom as you add developer. That's why we've textured the bottom surface; it allows liquid to flow under the film but holds the film when the liquid drains.
@@timklein185 so how do you SAFETLY remove the film afterwards??, as looking at the video/user guide, there is no 'recess' like in a fidelity holder, so one's fingernail can remove the sheet!
@@andyvan5692 We've added "finger pockets": shop.stearmanpress.com/collections/photography/products/sp-8x10-daylight-processing-tray
Hello Tim, in the preliminary manual there is the procedure for refilling. Is it possible to have a video showing the trick you mentioned in the manual? Thanks
Fausto,
We're working on updated videos; hope to having something out soon.
Thanks,
Tim
@@timklein185 Hello Tim, I don't understand why you need to tilt up the back (I mean the closed side) of the tray when you are pouring the liquids. I was expecting doing the opposite
@@FaustoSaporito It's not essential but it helps the liquid flow evening over the top of the film. Frankly, I've forgotten to do it several times and didn't notice a difference.
@@timklein185 thanks for the info. Anyway I did it in both ways and everything was fine! I developed 4x5 until now and they are perfect! Tomorrow I will try with 8x10
I process a lot of 2 ¼ x 3 ¼ and 3 ¼ x 4 ¼. Can this be used for that format size?
The 3.25x4.25 might work but you'd probably have to modify the "hold down" tabs for the smaller size.
Sorry if it´s a silly question but I was wondering if it would be possible make stand developing (8x10) on it.
We've had others ask and I know people have tried it. However, no one has reported back on how it worked. I don't know why it wouldn't work and I think if it didn't, someone would have told us. I guess I'll have to try it myself.
Is this a near-final design!?!? :D
No changes foreseen at this point (other than fixing the texturing of the lid and adding part numbers.)
I am interest in this Tray , where can I purchase from , regards hermanfoo.

You can also order from Morco Ltd in the UK and Freestyle in California.
@@timklein185 how about ordering this for Australia?, do you have a dealer here, or a camera shop, which features your products?
Interested. Price point?
Looks like retail will be $148.
You know, color-coded baffles might work better...
That would really complicate production. It would require a separate mold for each part (or at least closing off the injection gates and shooting each part separately.)
Thanks, Tim. Good luck with this project. What are we talking about for costs?

Since when is film PRESOAKING en voque ?
Not in a hundred years Agfa, Ilford or Kodak
advised the photographer to do so.
You must be nuts.
There are plenty of tanks for sheetfilm:
Kodak, HP, Kindermann, Combiplan etc.
Or make a tank yourself.
Really? First read the instructions. The pre-soak to get the film flat, not to condition the emulsion (which, by the way, Ansel and many others recommended much less than 100 years ago.) As for other tanks, we're not aware of many other daylight safe processing systems for 8x10. Much less that can handle other smaller sizes.
Ansel Adams recommends using a pre-soak in his book "The Negative", p. 206."The pre-soaking allows the emulsion to swell and stabilize before it is immersed in the developer, this assures more uniform development." Interestingly, on that page there is a picture of a development tank very similar to the sp-445.
