- Quite often we receive comments stating that it’s ‘easy’ for Peter because he has all this expensive gear and that is how he achieves the high standard of photography that we share. Although we have expressed & shown many times that is not the case, we still are inundated with requests of using inexpensive gear, and you how to get killer shots on a budget. So here it is, a 20 year old light + ambient fill - we hope you like the results :) anything is possible.

The secret to the craft isn't in how much one spends on tools, but how much one KNOWS how to USE them. Knowing light, what it does and how to really use it to compliment the shot is what makes a successful shot. Of course, having the opportunity of using models like Bec makes it so much more enjoyable.
Agree :) thanks heaps
Bec is (IMHO) the photographers model. She tics all the right boxes, a unicorn really. Dream Model, Dream Studio, Dream Camera ... living the dream. :)
Yay I was hoping to find one with Bec modeling. She is drop dead gorgeous wow
7:15 this short section of Peters dialog could be a master class on coaching a model on the set. Bec instantly transformed. Just wow! These two work so well together.
7:49 creative way to encourage/train a model to explore more variety.
but I need a Bec in front of my camera, I already got the $200 lights 🤣
I love how you show not just what works but what does not! Great humor. Love it!
Glad you enjoy it!
I loved this video. To me, the look with just the natural light was as good as with flash!
Thanks so much
Best not-a-model model of the world! Always a pleasure to see you in front of Peter´s camera.
Thanks heaps :) I’ve started modelling again so that term is no longer correct haha :D
What I love about these videos is how Peter dissects the image & explains the use of colour channels & the subtle differences in their application.
Thanks
As much as I respect and enjoy the photographic content of your videos, I especially enjoy the friendship you have with one another. Your educational dialog is beautifully complemented by your friendly bantering. I've volunteered with youth for years, and appreciate the value of intergenerational friendships, and the passing down of learned skills. It's something being lost.
That's aesome, thanks heaps
Peter bout time we make Bec an honorary Italian she’s already got the moves down !
Great content again guys
Thanks so much
A simple setup and a wealth of knowledge and experience!
This is brilliant. I have a large project coming up with exactly this scenario, using a single flashlight.
You guys are the best!
Aweome, glad it was helpful! Thanks heaps :)
Just found your channel. Simplicity is staggering. Bec is superb. Love your chemistry together. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks so much! 😊
"It's not what makes the light that matters, it's what you do with it." - Joe McNally
Peter, You’re lucky - Bec ín front of camera is fantastic. I hope, one day both of you will visit Poland with workshop and possibility of photo session with Bec :)
Thanks Bec and I want to come to Poland once this crap is over
😍🔥😎 BEC, Best of the BEST !!! 👏🏆👍
This is what we have been waiting for!!
You guys are the best I learned a lot watching you thank you for breaking down with lighting
Thank you
Great, thanks for making this video Mr. Peter Coulson! For sure working with the very best Gear is ideal, but in the end is what the Photographer does with the Gear what is key for great images.
Well said Thanks :)
Absolutely loving Peter in a Bec shirt shooting Bec! Very meta; Warhol would be proud... (Still looking forward to when you guys come back to Europe to teach. I was signed up for the workshops in CH that got cancelled.)
Thanks heaps :) hopefully we can travel again soon, can't wait to be back in Europe
it's not about the gear, it's about the model and photographer. definitely.. another one in my to do list. thanks to the both of you.. cheers
Thank you :)
Bec is really friendly and Funny.Thumbs up!!Greetings from Germany!
Thank you! 😃
Hassie and Bec the best kind of video #HASSLEBEC!
This is all the same stuff I'm doing in my new product photography job. Peter, been a fan of yours for years. Quit the last product photography job after 4.5 years cause work environment was SHIT. New company is great, awesome people, and now working with equestrian products. Super fun, very complex, but a great new challenge 👍
When Bec goes from doofy to serious...big mood
I always watch you 2 as if you were a Netflix TV movie but without a subscription so it is even more pleasant to watch you 2
Great video to get out of the gearheadspace we all find ourselves in sometimes.
Obviously the way to get great photos, is the photographer has to wear the right t-shirt. Every time I watch you all work, I learn. Thanks very much!!!
Thanks again :)
Bec would make any lights look good! 😀
"Driplets!", Great Elinchrom slag (I shoot Elinchrom, but it was funny). You two are adorable.
Bec should be the model in all the videos!
very much helpful, thanks to both of you ... always the best team ^^
Our pleasure thank you :)
My God... so talented and so gorgeous ... No need to define who is who.. you both are talented and gorgeous. Thank you both. Wow...
Thanks Chris
You guys are awesome!! Spray bottle trick really got my attention super curious!!
Thanks the spray bottle trick will be in next weeks video :)
That might be a $200 light but you have a million dollar model and a great studio
All this time I have been enjoying the RaRa shoots, I have for some reason been taking Bec's involvement for granted. My mistake Bec you are breathtakingly beautiful. My complements to the chef!
Thanks
Thank you to you both! Cheers!!!
Thank you too!
Great instruction video again, I've done pictures with my Samsung Galaxy phone that are hard to tell from a high end camera just by using the right lighting. You also have Bec, who does not have a bad side.....as long as the wine glass is filled. LOL
You get the absolute best transitions across the greyscale. One can argue composition and artistic value but getting the composition and artistic flare combined with technical correctness is a level that few attain.
Thanks so much
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer Bec is an interesting subject in more ways than one. First the kid makes me laugh but her skin tone and the way she moves makes a solid base for great photography.
Your ability to get great transitions in tone are things people should be listening to.
Yes, the 0-9 transitions are spectacular, a real master class in grayscale. And you nailed the importance of Bec's skin tone to the composition. All of Peter's work is what I call "luscious," the tones are full and liquid.
@@memathews I hope these videos inspire the up and coming to embrace the art and the technology.
How to create a photo like that with a 20 year old light?
a) years of training
b) perfecting the eye of the artist
c) having a model like Bec -- well, only Bec
d) the apparel -- white irish sweater and black boots --- perfecto
e) all of the above ⭐
thank you
Thanks Peter & Bec
Thank you :)
Bec's da bomb!
Had a set of 3 SLS 3001 lights as my first lighting rig. They are still going today. Gave them to my daughter 10 years ago.
Agreed, I had cheapo Spiratone lights in my home studio for years and years until they finally crapped out. Tons of quality photos of family and friends. Best way to go imo.
Great tutorial as always. I love your work Peter.
Many thanks!
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer Thank you Peter.
Amazing, as always! 😍😍😍❤️
Thank you!! 😊
Thanks Peter and Bec!! You had to use wine on the background 😉🙏
Thanks lols Next time! :)
That was over way too soon. I liked the early discussion of what controls what. Most other tutorials show cancelling the ambient entirely, but you used it for fill, so we needed to know the nuances. Thanks. Bec looked really relaxed and the pics were lovely. Stay well.
Thank you and stay safe :)
If you don't have a vision of what your'e trying to capture then gear really doesn't matter at all. Keep up the great work you two. I look forward to meeting you both one day when you came back to the USA.
Well said! We hope we can travel again soon too
I have just started studio portrait photography at my camera club (don't judge me) and I find your videos very interesting. I struggle with the confidence to direct the models, and probably don't know what I want from the images anyway. Hopefully this is just experience. Love your work.
Thanks heaps, experience behind the camera will give you confidence with what you're doing
Forever entertaining.
Thank you
I fill how you like what you do. And it's inspiring to me. Thanks very very much
Thank you :)
I had to pause that video to write down what you said about how ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed effect the ambient and flash. It is something so simple when you think about it. But at the same time it never occurred to me to even think about it. Lol. You blew my mind sir, and I love when that happens.
Awesome :) so glad it wa helpful
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer So much! I'll be fiddling with it next time I shoot. :)
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer The secondary triangle relationship due to using flash is great. But I'm guessing there are limitations with curtain shutters that are not impressed by leaf shutters. Assuming the Hasselblad is still using the lens leaf shutter, it would be goods to clarify that for viewers limited to curtain shutters and flash sync of 1/60 or 1/200, or other limits.
Definitely like the title shot pose the best...can probably do this with a speed light too... Not without Bec though 🙂
😂🤣 Dear lord Peter my first studio lights were exactly these. I got the pro pack which was 3 heads. I even remember getting them from Teds camera. Thanks for the awesome content and the trip down amnesia lane 🤦♂️👍👍
As always love the Bec and Peter show. Be well stay safe.
Thanks so much Chippy, glad you enjoyed it
Nice work both of you.. 🤗
Thanks a lot 😊
I agree, cutting off her hand doesn't make the picture bad, because it's not the main subject of the picture.
I’m waiting to see it with reflectors and a Holga!
love watching
Thanks
I kept looking for that ever present glass of red wine...
3 most important elements in portait photography: model, MODEL, MODEL !!!😝😝😝😝😝😝
Bec would look good with a lighter flame as light
Very cool, thanks guys :)
Our pleasure!
For someone who isn't a model, Bec knows how to turn it on and move through a series of subtle position shifts and looks.
Bec has gone back to modelling :) most of her weekends are filled up with shoots
I still have my SLS 1000 , use it a fair bit still too.
Actually I use Elinchrom lights both studio and location strobes. They are certainly cheaper than Profoto & Broncolor but a lot more expensive than a $ 200 light.
As you state knowing your equipment and working within the limitations you can produce perfectly acceptable shots it’s not about the most expensive.
Thanks Jeff yes it's all about understanding your gear
Would love to see the same sort of shot with Bec in a man's white dress shirt. Love the cyc. Always wanted one of those.
Thanks cool idea :)
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer Besides looking good, I would be interested in how you maintain detail in the dark areas without blowing out the white areas.
Yeah Setting the seen just right looks cool details 🧐🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰💯
Great video guys. I got have some umbrellas and going to put a sheet over them today to take some photos and see if I can get sways with that for now instead of buying a soft box/ beauty dish. Nothing professional just for family pictures.
Thanks white shower curtain works great as a defuser
Awesome those are dirt cheap at the dollar store here in the states will try that out thanks Peter or Bec or Admin.
@@christopherrodriguez7223 thanks its Peter :)
Love this channel!! I can't wait to watch the videos when I get that notification. I did a practice shoot the other day that was inspired by one of the hard light looks. Uploaded a video of it. The video is shit, final pictures are good. Lol. Oh and I used my $200 strobes cause that's all I have at the moment.
That's awesome :) thank you so much
I like your T-Shirt Peter :-) Hello From France
Thanks heaps
Watching your vids it is really obvious that your process is scaleable with gear specs and the space you are shooting in. what i've taken away from your vids is how you bend and shape light like some sort of blacksmith. I clone light setups all the time. I'm going to try and clone your process with my travel kit this weekend. 20 year old alien bee and some shoe mount flashes. I'm going to run the camera hdmi out to an 8 inch portable monitor, stick the camera on a tripod and spend my time forming and shaping the light. The camera is going to do what i tell it to do, the talent is gonna be the talent. I should spend most of my effort getting the light to do what i want it to do,
Go for it thanks
Very beautiful
Thank you, guys! Very informative as per usual. I’ll have to read a little about cancelling or accentuating fill light by changing aperture (was it ?) speed and stuff like that. I don’t really understood why it would not impact the light coming out of the flash.
Changing the shutter speed (the exposure time) alters the amount of fill light, because the fill light is constant. It's no different than changing the shutter speed if you are not using flash (in manual mode, as in the video). Peter was using a shutter speed of about 1/160th sec, but the flash happens in something like 1/1000th sec; so long as the shutter speed isn't so fast that it cuts off some of the flash light* (unlikely) you can alter it as much as you like and the flash light will not be affected. Changing the aperture, however, alters the amount of any light that goes through the lens; flash or constant. Of course, changing the ISO just alters the overall exposure too. I hope this helps.
*The maximum synchronisation speed on focal plane shutters is a mechanical issue due to the way the shutter works; it's not the same thing as I've described here.
@@rogerbradbury9713 Thank you very much for this complete explanation ! I understand now, and that will be helpful :)
I like her sweater shirt new style and stuff i liked besides art modeling wolven type dress 😉💯
You got me with endless thigh, beautiful model shot by an artist
Love the video. Small silly question: where’s the ambient light coming from? Overhead studio lights? Large window?
Thanks a small skylight in the roof
Maestro! Cool idea getting nice shots with limited gear, showing it's the archer not the arrow
Thank you :)
Always love your stuff - I do think though that the end shot is not as 'refined' as the majority of your shoots in other videos. Is it me, or does the $200 light not 'shine' in this example.
So love your channel Bec & Peter.
Peter, are you happy with the final shots?
Thanks!
WOW thank you so much from Peter and Bec :)
Not bovered how expensive the gear you use. If I want bells and whistles I'll divert living money into equipment buying. My choice. I watch for you and Bec, sharing your knowledge. Can't see why wingers watch, you don't have to share your skills. Cool that you do 😊
Thank you Richard
Love the headache and smelly ache. I’m going to use that.
BEC GROUPIES UNITED
hahahaha...thanks, thanks, thanks. You are not only a great photography master, but also a great guy.
Glad you liked it :) thanks heaps
Bec is most beautiful model I have seen on your RUclips video's
Thank you for doing this video! Do you have any recommendations for new inexpensive lights? And would you recommend using constant or flash as a beginner?
Thanks I would start with constant lighting
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer thanks Peter!
Very nice thank you
Most welcome 😊
Peterrrrrr.. I love your t-shirts... where or how do you print. they look great.... Please help me... I did a few but they used a plastic paper to print, to think.

Great show as always. Bec has really come on as a presenter and model. Bec, what is the secret of your youthfulness?
Thanks heaps, I'm a vampire :)
It's not the gear, it's the guy.
About not expensive gears. I've started with cobra. When I've found me stuck and not progressing anymore I've decided to move on to Neewer strobes. But quickly realised that even if they was better than cobra, they had also some annoying limitations so I moved to some Godox SK 400 II that you can find for 150€ each. And as of now, I am free to do whatever I want with them. It is not the best, it is only because I lack of knowledge and maybe of imagination, but as of now, it is enough for me. When you are attracted to studio photography, it is not about having the best strobes, modifiers, accessories. It is about knowing how to use properly what you have to fully exploit their potential and transform it in stunning pictures. Start with Cobra. Or directly with cheap strobes. Try...again...again...and when you masterize it and see what are the limits of your gears, then apply for an upgrade. This way, you will continue progressing.
Thanks Kevin very true :)
Elinchrom is a perfectly respectable name, just like your £30,000 - £40,000 Hasselblad, nether brands are cheap. 30-40 years ago Elinchrom and Bowens were the two main pro lighting manufacturers supplying the UK market. Now we have Profoto whose main competition seem to be coming from Godox, judging by the comparison reviews on RUclips. A standard mains powered 3-head (1000w) Elinchrom kit is £3500. Add a modest softbox and Elinchrom trigger and you're at £4000. In my world that isn't cheap.
Cool wall! Do you have a video that shows how to create a wall like that? Would love to see that.
we have these two videos, hope this helps ruclips.net/video/xa8vL5x05-o/видео.html ruclips.net/video/ziqVDmUkhRU/видео.html
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer Thanks Peter/Bec for the info! I'll check them out!
Actually I really want a bec calendar... when can we expect that?
Yes coming soon
I agree you can do lots with "cheap" gear so thanks for showing it for some others that aren't sure. But I have an unrelated question about working models. I'm subscribed to Inspire, is there a place on there I can ask a question that doesn't look so random on here?
Thanks you can just email us your questions if that's better for you peter@koukei.com.au
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer That's perfect. Expect it shortly. Thanks!
What a job, and he gets paid too.
