Does God Create Unbelief?: Chosen By God with R.C. Sproul

- If God alone is responsible for the salvation of the elect, does that mean He creates unbelief in those He didn’t elect? Examining this question in this message entitled “Did God Create Unbelief?” Dr. Sproul clearly establishes that God is not the author of sin and does not create unbelief.
This is the 5th in a series of messages by Dr. Sproul on God's salvation. See other videos in the series: • Chosen By God - R.C. S...

Wow this helps me understand Romans 9 so much better. And it makes salvation and the cross so much more important to me as a believer. Thank you Lord
Without God's election, I wouldn't be
saved by his mercy and grace, thank
you RC for making a difficult truth
clear
What a delightful man. He has a calm way of talking. Praise Jesus Christ.🥰
I love RC. God used him to bring me to Reformation i.e. to understand these biblical concepts.
I praise the Name of Jesus Christ for His Salvation for you.
Please read Adam Clarke's commentary on Romans 9.
WOW, 29:00!!! That explanation of Pharaoh! Wow, wow, wow.
Yes, every good thing comes from above. Any goodness in Pharaoh was from God, so God removing his good influence hardened Pharaoh's heart -- exactly what came natural to Pharaoh. WOW.
Amen Sproul. We have been predestined before the foundations of the earth. May we cherish this within our hearts forevermore. God bless you all.
Our brother RC was such a magnificent expositor and his teaching God's word has been a catalyst in setting my heart ablaze with passionate affection for the Lord by helping me understand His absolute sovereignty. Praise almighty God.
R.C Sproul was one of the best Bible teachers in the world.
i too want to hear more of his teachings....he is .really about the only one in my 48 yrs of turning to JESUS that seems to think like me......and i have listened to all the so called great teachers having lived in tulsa for about 18 yrs........i would like to know where this brother lives and teaches ....
And RC is still one of the best preachers.. He's not dead Spiritually, He is still with Us..RC is just sleeping..
No comparison to the Holy Spirit
The supreme teacher!
The Lord God's Grace is to give us, what we do NOT deserve.
The Lord God's Mercy is NOT to give us, what we deserve.
RC’s teaching is like sweet music to the ears. It’s just is so good and I praise God for His unconditional election, I never deserved it and never will. I praise God for Him raising up a teacher like RC to help us understand His truth
@skylineFG, RC Sproul is a genius that understand more of the bible than both the Calvinists and Arminians but none of the Calvinists understand the biblical doctrine of Election and Predestinatio including R.C. I can prove it to you...

Some amazing teaching in the last 5 minutes. This helped me with a problem posed by a family member. Thank you!
The last couple of minutes of this brought great clarity to me. Thank you ☺️
This man is much appreciated by whom were not in clear thoughts on God's existence, but he in the grace of God he could manage to communicate the word of God in a simple manner of explaining what they have missed them and made it lucent to them. Rest in peace. My God's father in distance.

A clear presentation on the responsibility the reprobate takes for his own destiny, while God validates His sovereign mercy.
Hi.. it would seem to me, according to this teaching, that no one is responsible for their own destiny, redeemed or reprobate. Had God not made his election, all would go the way of reprobation. For He has made the choice of belief for the believer, even against human will. Maybe I'm just not completely understanding this teaching.
So helpful and so truthful!!! Thank you for this clip!
Make more videos where have you been?!? Lol

Amazing teaching. I finally understand such matters. Thank you so much for sharing these.
What a blessing!
I agree with RC. The point he didn't make that nails it without any ambiguity is the the word forknowledge is NOT the word FORSIGHT. The word foreknowledge is the word PRO GNOSKO...Gnosko (To know Intimately) as in adam knew eve and she bore a son. Also as in "depart from me, I never knew (gnosko) you". So gnosko is a deep intimate love and knowledge of someone. It is not merely forsight (seeing what would happen & choosing that) that theory makes me chuckle, and makes God a very puny God indeed.
Oh, yes. Our Creator has the most Holy Holy Holy, sense of humor! :D
Please 🙏 for my children and I
Excellent teaching, which has helped my understanding of differing views to come into more lucid focus. What Dr. Sproul speaks of as positive/negative of God's action (or inaction for negative), in the hardening of Pharaoh's heart, I think can also be applied to 2 Thess. 2:11. "And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie..." Perhaps God will simply remove His restraint of evil (after all this is an eschatological verse), allowing reprobate minds to be further blinded by the enemy, rather than directly by God. And yet all He allows is by Him for He is sovereign. I am uncertain as to whether or not I expressed my thought well enough here, but there it is. Blessings.
Thank you, I believe you expressed your thought masterfully.
I 👍 agree!
Thankyou for making this clear

The whole video is awesome..
„Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God; for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempteth no man: but each man is tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed. Then the lust, when it hath conceived, beareth sin: and the sin, when it is fullgrown, bringeth forth death.“
James 1 : 13-15 ASV
I agree almost with everything what R.C. teaches. There is one thought though in my mind: I was nat given a chance at my birth to choose between evil and good. I was born with the stigma of sin and death only because some thousands years ago Adam did sin. So, granted, I deserve justice because of my fallen nature. The problem is - I was never asked if I embrace the fallen nature. So it means I take the fall for someone else's sin unless God offers me a hand.
Just as we all sinned being IN ADAM, we are justified being IN CHRIST in his death and resurrection.
If your Born from above..
@yousuf nairang it is not enough to say “I don’t agree with him” to meaningfully rebuke someone.
His argument is based on the teachings of the Scripture. If you want to rebuke him, you have to prove at least that his argument is faulty…
You say "it means I take the fall for someone else's sin" as if to say you've never committed sin before.
If you've sinned at all, you deserve eternal damnation in hell, apart from the redeeming grace of Christ.
And all people are born sinning.
@@justinmadison513 I think that's what the poster was saying here...'why should Adam's sin be imputed upon him to begin with'...as he the poster, thinks it's unfair he had no say-so in the matter. Anyway, I think that's what he's trying to say.
One verse that jumps out at me that further back RC's point is God's statement about Pharaoh... "for this cause have I raised thee up"
Exodus 9:16 (KJV) And in very deed for this cause have I raised thee up, for to shew in thee my power; and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth.
Proving God made it happen and he is not bring responsive but is responsible for it.
Concluded all in unbelief that he might have mercy upon all!
Amen! Jesus died for ALL!
Thank you Pastor Scott, the gospel should never be a fluff piece. 1Cor. 1:23 says, but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness. May every time we step foot in church may we be transformed by the conviction of the Holy Spirit, leading us to repentance, may our deaf ears be opened and may our blind eyes see again, to a Holy God I ask that You would transform us. Thank you Jesus for the cross! Thank you for shedding Your blood to make us whole again.

+Theology Matters God and God alone exist in the eternal state. He can see past, present, and future, at the "same time" from His eternal perspective. God cannot "learn" from the future. His redemption plan will not fail.
Faith is a GIFT from God. Without it, man cannot believe. God does the saving. All glory to Him.
God bless Dr. R. C. Sproul and ligonier for preaching the truth of the Bible!
bible4truth,
what do you mean by "false bibles"? Do you have accounting for only one true bible? I suspect I am coming into the presence of a kjv-only follower by submittal of your kjv reference....
I believe much of what you say, but I am troubled by what appears to be your charge of translations that were assembled by theologians and historians who are fully dedicated believers in Yashua Ha Mashiach. I have an affection for His name within the language God chose to reveal Himself...
Shalom!
In him.
Justice is meted out to everyone. For those outside of Christ it is received directly, for those in Christ it is vicariously done to Christ on our behalf. The just dying for the unjust, our sins imputed to Christ and God's wrath being poured out onto Christ in our stead and Christ's Righteousness being imputed to us for whom Christ died. In every case, God's justice is satisfied. Propitiation is about the satisfaction of God's wrath against us. Christ is the Propitiation for our sins. "God made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, so that we might become the Righteousness of God in Him" (II Corinthians 5:21).
This makes perfect sense ... until I read all those verses about what we must do to believe. And all the other verses about what we must do to keep the faith that we believe ("IF" you...!"). I have had this settled after hearing Timothy Keller say the analogy:
"The door of salvation has written over the top, "Whosoever believes," but after you walk through, you look back, and over the other side of the door is written, "You didn't choose me, but I chose you."
That made it seem like it WAS both God and man (though God is more free, to choose). Now, I don't know if I will ever understand it.
However, I like what Paul Washer said: "It's better to have it and not know what to call it, than to know what to call it and not have it."
I pray I have His Spirit -- His unbreakable seal upon my heart. Though it has been very hard, even after I first believed.
John 10:27-28 KJV

Obviously your biggest is you just want the rewards you think you will get from him not HE Himself.
You must be Born again born of the Spirit born from Above.
His Spirit was prophesied by all the prophets to Convict us of sin, guide us into all truth and make us concerned to follow all His Torah: Law.
You need to spend time with Him in His word and in forsaking all worldly concerns. 🤷 There is no methodology we can use to manipulate favor rewards or an audience with Him. If you believe He has chosen you then Trust Him place your faith in Him. If you do not know then you desperately need to read and seek Him. In accordance with the Law and the prophets you will find Him when you seek HIM, not your imagination of who you want Him to be: with all your heart mind and will.

@@augustoupkm Well YHVH made the first covenant with a people that were not a people. IF they follow his commands they will live by them. But man is inherently lawless due to hereditary original sin nature.
They refused and he divorced them so He fulfills the 2nd covenant He planned or decided on all along, dependent only on Christ.
I highly recommend that you read Adam Clarke's commentary on Romans 9.
How is “letting go” of Pharoah’s heart passive or different than the alternative stated?
I’m having trouble squaring his comments on Romans 9 with 1 Timothy 2:4. Does anyone have any thoughts on that?
Genesis 25:23 two nations are in thy womb
does Paul not demonstrate here that the election of the nations is done by God's electing of individuals here??
I think it's simpler than that. Each time Moses went to pharaoh with God's command, pharaoh increases in his determination to not obey. So, when God tells Moses "go and tell pharaoh........... I will harden his heart", its the command itself that angers pharaoh and produces more and more resistance.
Paul looked forward through time and adopted the Augustinian view of election. 😜
Anyone know if there is a transcript of this lecture?
Chosen by God, by RC Sproul
Okay. So if God steps back to let Pharaoh's heart be hardened by pharaoh's own desires and actions does he also step back to let Job's heart to cling to God and express his faith? And if that's the case is that not an argument for free will but within the bounds of God's sovereignty?
Job is wicked like pharaoh. If God stepped back, Jobs evil would pour out. Job was only righteous because God had mercy and created righteousness in him.
Whenever God pulls away from someone, evil always erupts
@@eminem101904 Amen!

@@eminem101904 i agree 💯
I agree with all but about the "hate" thing, for in Ps. 5.5 it declares that "He hates all who do evil". Why can't the Almighty hate what He doesn't love?
Hate....to love LESS....
So I have a question about this if I had the desire to be saved does that mean Gods working in me or even if I have a desire I could just want to be saved but I won’t because I’m not predestined. I’m not saying this is wrong.
How does this be in harmony with the great commission?
Fact: Only God is perfect.
Fact: God is Just, so He must punish sin. To be love what is good means to hate that which corrupts what is good.
Fact: God cannot create something that is equal to Him, therefore, all created beings are imperfect and have a "sinful nature".
Fact: A lifetime of sinning and a rejection of Jesus Christ deserves the punishment of eternal Hell, because God's Hatred for sin is everlasting. However, the harshness of this punishment depends on the sinner. Satan will suffer unimaginably because He has been sinning since the beginning, whereas someone like the Rich Man still had his mental faculties and could even communicate with Abraham despite suffering.
Fact: Those in Hell continue to sin and have no opportunity for forgiveness because they rejected the love of God.
However, the interesting part starts here...
Fact: Since all have sinned, God has the right to choose who He wishes to save. He does not have to show mercy, and He will not for some to display His Holiness.
Fact: Anyone who asks God for mercy will receive it. God is faithful to His promises and cannot lie.
Fact: But only those who have been born again by the Spirit of God will ever choose to ask for mercy. Those who don't have the Spirit cannot love God because they love their sin. They hate God because of their pride.
Fact: Though we have been born again, that does not mean we are completely set free from the lusts of the flesh. God will sanctify us slowly, just as He explained to the Israelites that they had to multiply their numbers in the wilderness before they were ready to enter the promised land. In our flesh God is teaching us as His Father to know right from wrong, to learn to hate sin and put to death our sinful flesh in the same way that Jesus was refined and perfected through His suffering.
Fact: If we don't have assurance of these things then Satan will eat us alive and we will fail to let the Spirit work in our lives. Satan wants us to doubt God and give up on Him, but we must never lose heart. God's love is unconditional.
No, not 'all created beings have a sin nature', only human beings.
If you take the phrase, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated” as being literally about their individual election to salvation, and as representatives of every individual, then you cannot say that the reprobate are reprobated because of their own works that God foreknew. Because that very text says that God chose them before they had done anything good or evil, meaning Jacob was hated and therefore reprobated without regard to any foreknowledge of God. This means election to salvation and election to reprobation BOTH were done without regard to anything that they had done.
Yet the Calvinist wants to have both their monergistic salvation and their synergistic damnation.
Space case Jacob was Loved
As alwasy saying the exact opposite of what the bible says lol
typical unbelievers
God will allow a lying spirit the have its way with the wicked and the hopelessly apostate. Also, The first Chapter of Romans tells us that people will be 'given over' to wickedness. You get your chance, you cast it aside, God shuts the door and no-one can open it. Those who mock God suffer a similar fate.
Calvinists want to say that God foreordains whatsoever comes to pass, but in the very next breath, they want to say, “Ah yes, but he did not foreordain that Mr Smith would commit a particular sin at 5:30pm on 3 November 2023.”
Well, they can’t have it both ways. If Mr Smith is just left to do his own thing, how can it be said that God predetermines that thing?
“So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
Acts 16:31
If God predestined some to heaven and to hell then what was the purpose for the cross?Perhaps to make sure those he destined to heaven would make it there?I don't think so!!
How then do we make our call and election sure?
I'm not sure if Rc talked about God predestined Pharaoh to make that choice. Doesn't that mean God is behind the sinful choice that Pharaoh made. I Know Scriptures say God cannot cause someone to do evil, I would like a good explanation so that I can give an answer to those who don't agree with Reformed theology
God said He knew us before we were formed in our mother's womb.
Jesus also said, The Son CAN do nothing by Himself; He CAN do only what He sees the Father doing" (John 5:19) The word "can" (δύναται) is the same word here that is in 6:44. If we interpret this and other hyperbolic sayings of Christ the way Mr. Sproul interprets John 6:44, what's to keep someone from thinking that Jesus was in the same helpless state as any depraved sinner?
How would you feel if an earthly father showed favor to one son and not the other and just gave the explanation that it's his perogative to do as he wishes. We'd think that was unloving, unkind, and unfair. And the repercussion of God's choice of showing mercy to one and justice to another is dire - it's an eternity in hell. I cannot see how this action demonstrates any love on the part of God. The people commenting here can praise God for His actions because you're one of the elect - or so you think you are - how can you be sure? And what about your loved ones who aren't believers and have no hope of becoming believers unless God draws them? What is the point of sharing the gospel? Why is RC Sproul even giving this class? I'd imagine everyone in attendance is already one of the elect. You may praise God for His mercy toward you, but do you also praise Him for showing His power and wrath toward those He chose not to save?
@KTTGHMTJWYCBLAC RC Sproul was a Calvinist - they believe that no one can come to the Father unless the Father draws him. Only those God has chosen to regenerate and give faith, will be saved. According to Sproul, MacArthur, and Piper - man cannot even desire to know God and thereby seek Him out or hear the Gospel and repent and be saved. God in eternity past decided who will be saved and who will be damned. Man has absolutely nothing to do with it. I have been listening to sermons from all three men and find it all very upsetting. I understand what you're saying and I agree with you - but that is an Armenian doctrine which these men reject. According to them, man has no hope of being saved unless God made the choice to save them before they were born. My point in my example of the 2 sons is that this is not something a loving father would do - to show favoritism. And the consequences of God's favoritism is extremely dire - hell for those He chooses not to save. How can it be loving for God to decide who wil be saved and who will not? How is it even just? True, we all deserve death because we are all sinners. God doesn't have to save anyone. But to have 2 equally guilty people stand before you and let one live and the other go to eternal damnation is not just and not loving. I believe God reveals Himself to everyone. It is clear just from observing nature that He exists. I do not take away from God any of His power or glory in providing a way of salvation to man by believing man has a choice. Calvinists believe that man having a choice to follow Jesus - a choice they make - somehow takes away from God's glory in salvation because they feel this somehow gives man some credit in his salvation. When I heard the Gospel over 30 years ago and realized who I was before God given my sin, I was humbled and repentant and gave God praise for revealing the truth to me. I in no way gave myself any credit for salvation. I believe salvation is a gift - a gift is given and can be recieved or not - it's up to the person it's being given to to make that decision. A gift is not forced on anyone, nor is the value of the gift or the love behind it lessened because the person it's being given to decides not to take it. Calvinists believe God basically forces salvation on a person - they have no choice to reject Him because He gives them the ability to see, believe, repent, etc. It's all His doing and He made that decision from the foundation of the earth. They can't say no because His will is always accomplished and He willed them to be saved. This is the Calvinist interpretation of the doctrine of predestination and election. I have been agonizing over this doctrine for weeks because I want to know the truth about Who God is and understand what He does. I've tried to look at their interpretation of Scripture and wrap my head around it and I just can't see how they can believe this let alone preach it. Where is the hope of the Gospel? Why preach at all? If God already has chosen His elect, why bother? I read comments under their videos by people saying how happy they are that God chose them. How does it feel to know that God may not have chosen your husband, child, parent, or friend? If this doctrine is true, how can I continue loving a Being that would do this to people? My heart is breaking and my faith is crushed.
God fitted vessels of wrath for destruction. It might not feel good to you but it's what The Bible says.
In English there is only one word for love. So when you read The Bible in English you only get one. But The Bible wasn't written in English. There's 2 words in The Bible for love. The main one is agape. That word is defined in 2nd John 1:6. The other word is phileo. That's the word for affection. You are confusing the affection type love with the the commandment type love
This is a common mistake when people go by the English reading of The Bible.

"He leaves them to themselves"... (Not everyone chooses God)
Some people are worse than others (God takes His hands off the reprobate who refuses to turn to God)

John 6 :64
The choice was not based upon anyone having done good or evil, because blessed is the man to whom God does not impute sins, so that election is purely down to believing in the gospel + nothing. Esau never served the younger and in terms of benevolence Esau was much kinder towards Jacob who in fact totally mistreated Esau. If it was based on works then Esau would have come out more favourably. It's almost like Paul is saying it had nothing to do with works, but rather it was all to do with their attitude towards God's grace, which is an intrinsic part of the calling. God does the calling but it remains true that those who are called have freewill to accept the gospel or reject it. An omnipotent God knew all of this before the world began. Jacob represents a class of believers of whom God foreknew, as well as those who would reject the gospel. Paul anticipates an objection to God's sovereign choice based on the common/carnal view that works is the qualifier for righteousness. It is God who justifies the ungodly based upon believing in the gospel.
God's choice is all about choosing those who would believe and trust in the finished work of Christ. God did not choose Cain who trusted in himself, who thought that God's choice was not fair. God was merciful to Jacob based upon the blood of Christ, and Esau received justice because he saw no value in the blood of Jesus.
Can I ask why did God tell Cain that he must rule over his sin or it will have him? Was Cain capable of choosing the right thing apart from God's grace? If not, why did God command him to do it if it cannot be done? Or Cain have a choice and he chose wrong?
@@kokoro.theheart he has a choice. They're misunderstanding Romans 9 to push Calvinism. No verse says man is unable to have faith. Romans 3 says Abraham believed. Not God gave Abraham faith. Abraham is credited for his faith multiple times and it says Abraham gave the glory to God.
Based oh your comment being human is dangerous .
Rest upon a human choice…You mean a human choice like Adam and Eve made? It does rest upon a human choice to whether to believe or not. What could be clearer in Scripture?! But that God does the believing for me is not belief. But that God does the loving for me is not love. But that God does the choosing for me is not choice. And that is what this comes to. Calvinism is determinism. It changes God, it changes man, and it changes the Gospel.
In this specific passage, the central mistake I believe Sproul ( and I grew up listening to Sproul and reading his books - fantastic teacher) makes in in conflating the election of Israel with the election of believers.
If God is God can't He do as He pleases with His creation? Whether or not He is fair or not?
No... for it is written, God is good. And since He is good, He is Holy, if He is Holy He is not a hypocrite, and hence consistent and not unfair. EVER! Being merciful is not being unfair. Punishing one and not another is not being unfair, but showing mercy to whom He will.
Tom Bladecki Baptist*
What a moronic statement Tom, you should be ashamed.
Howard Manley If God was to do as you wrote, know this is how he knows who is his. He gives us free will.
Tom Bladecki Wrong reply. All those who had faith in God before Jesus was born are with God. They went to heaven when Jesus died. All those who live/lived by faith (our bodies) will be at rest or until he takes us home. These souls are with him now but out bodies will be raised perfectly in the Lords timing and we will all be changed. This is the resurrection mentioned in the Bible.
Remember our bodies cannot enter the kingdom of Heaven.
Scripture DOES say that God chooses according to His foreknowledge those who will be sanctified.
1 Peter 1:2
The “foreknowledge” is the “foreknowledge” of those who would love Him. Not the “works” the love. Because God works all things together for the good of those who LOVE HIM.
A person who does not love God will never repent. They do not fell they have anything to repent of.
God opens the eyes of people and draws them to Himself by way of truth. Believers have a love for the truth. Even when it is hard.
@KTTGHMTJWYCBLAC
This is true. The two are not mutually exclusive, they are inclusive when speaking of God. God loving us first does not mean He forgoes His foreknowledge.
Rather, God hates those who hate Him. They are objects of His wrath. He knows who they are before they are born. See Esau.... God hated him before he was born before he ever did anything.
What could have happened if God chose Esau?
Nothing. He didn't.
