Excellent teaching, which has helped my understanding of differing views to come into more lucid focus. What Dr. Sproul speaks of as positive/negative of God's action (or inaction for negative), in the hardening of Pharaoh's heart, I think can also be applied to 2 Thess. 2:11. "And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie..." Perhaps God will simply remove His restraint of evil (after all this is an eschatological verse), allowing reprobate minds to be further blinded by the enemy, rather than directly by God. And yet all He allows is by Him for He is sovereign. I am uncertain as to whether or not I expressed my thought well enough here, but there it is. Blessings.
Thats why Paul said we have nothing to boast but boast in Christ. We died and were born-again....the life we live is no more ours but unto God and Gods will and purpose be done. Thank God for men like RC..never did forget who he was and lived liken unto Christ. Just another sinner who rest now with His Lord and Savior. Praise and glory to God. Shalom

This entire Universe belongs to the Lord God and he may do as he wishes with it. But we must remember that there is Absolutely NO Darkness in God and he is Perfectly HOLY. Therefore everything God does is perfect which is in line with his character. God bless everyone.
Most concise explanation of the doctrine of election that I’ve found yet. In Ephesians 1, Paul writes “In love He predestined us.” This is not a harsh doctrine. This is a doctrine of love. Praise God the Father. He has called out a peoples “from every tribe and tongue” to be a love gift to the Son. Let us stay true to our purpose then, you who are God’s children through genuine repentance and faith!
i have enjoyed your teachings and would love to come to one of your meetings ......i kinda feel like these people that you are teaching may be the people i should be around .....instead of those that i have been around for 48 yrs that strongly condemn that GOD has done all and is all.....it's always been Mike " you did this or that " always that i have been at fault or the problem .....my believe my SPIRIT has been leading me to someone like br. Sproul....
All glory to God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ for sanctifying him in the Holy Ghost by grace through faith. We are but wretched sinners saved by grace through faith and repentance for remission of sins in the Lord Jesus Christ, imputed righteousness and merits!
I agree with RC. The point he didn't make that nails it without any ambiguity is the the word forknowledge is NOT the word FORSIGHT. The word foreknowledge is the word PRO GNOSKO...Gnosko (To know Intimately) as in adam knew eve and she bore a son. Also as in "depart from me, I never knew (gnosko) you". So gnosko is a deep intimate love and knowledge of someone. It is not merely forsight (seeing what would happen & choosing that) that theory makes me chuckle, and makes God a very puny God indeed.
„Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God; for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempteth no man: but each man is tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed. Then the lust, when it hath conceived, beareth sin: and the sin, when it is fullgrown, bringeth forth death.“ James 1 : 13-15 ASV
Thank you Pastor Scott, the gospel should never be a fluff piece. 1Cor. 1:23 says, but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness. May every time we step foot in church may we be transformed by the conviction of the Holy Spirit, leading us to repentance, may our deaf ears be opened and may our blind eyes see again, to a Holy God I ask that You would transform us. Thank you Jesus for the cross! Thank you for shedding Your blood to make us whole again.
Hi.. it would seem to me, according to this teaching, that no one is responsible for their own destiny, redeemed or reprobate. Had God not made his election, all would go the way of reprobation. For He has made the choice of belief for the believer, even against human will. Maybe I'm just not completely understanding this teaching.
I've spoken to many Armenians, and I ask them all the same thing: "Did God put his Holy Spirit in you to influence your decision to come to Him?" and they ALL say a resounding "yes". This answer is the heart of the doctrine of election. God gives us the Holy Spirit which allows us to be tenderhearted towards Him in order to choose him. Without the influence of the Holy Spirit, we can't make the decision to follow Christ. This is why we pray for the Holy Spirits influence on non-believers.
Proverbs 3:5-6: Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
I agree almost with everything what R.C. teaches. There is one thought though in my mind: I was nat given a chance at my birth to choose between evil and good. I was born with the stigma of sin and death only because some thousands years ago Adam did sin. So, granted, I deserve justice because of my fallen nature. The problem is - I was never asked if I embrace the fallen nature. So it means I take the fall for someone else's sin unless God offers me a hand.
@yousuf nairang it is not enough to say “I don’t agree with him” to meaningfully rebuke someone. His argument is based on the teachings of the Scripture. If you want to rebuke him, you have to prove at least that his argument is faulty…
You say "it means I take the fall for someone else's sin" as if to say you've never committed sin before. If you've sinned at all, you deserve eternal damnation in hell, apart from the redeeming grace of Christ. And all people are born sinning.
@@justinmadison513 I think that's what the poster was saying here...'why should Adam's sin be imputed upon him to begin with'...as he the poster, thinks it's unfair he had no say-so in the matter. Anyway, I think that's what he's trying to say.
God is truly merciful and I'm very thankful for that. If God wasn't merciful, I wouldn't be here! You should see the mighty miracles God has performed in order that I might be saved! God saved me from an impossible place. Praise God Almighty forever and ever and ever amen! So very, VERY grateful to God! I kid you not.
There is one important verse that talks about elect based on foreknowledge 1 Peter 1:2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace be multiplied.
+Theology Matters God and God alone exist in the eternal state. He can see past, present, and future, at the "same time" from His eternal perspective. God cannot "learn" from the future. His redemption plan will not fail.
bible4truth, what do you mean by "false bibles"? Do you have accounting for only one true bible? I suspect I am coming into the presence of a kjv-only follower by submittal of your kjv reference.... I believe much of what you say, but I am troubled by what appears to be your charge of translations that were assembled by theologians and historians who are fully dedicated believers in Yashua Ha Mashiach. I have an affection for His name within the language God chose to reveal Himself... Shalom!
I think it's simpler than that. Each time Moses went to pharaoh with God's command, pharaoh increases in his determination to not obey. So, when God tells Moses "go and tell pharaoh........... I will harden his heart", its the command itself that angers pharaoh and produces more and more resistance.
Justice is meted out to everyone. For those outside of Christ it is received directly, for those in Christ it is vicariously done to Christ on our behalf. The just dying for the unjust, our sins imputed to Christ and God's wrath being poured out onto Christ in our stead and Christ's Righteousness being imputed to us for whom Christ died. In every case, God's justice is satisfied. Propitiation is about the satisfaction of God's wrath against us. Christ is the Propitiation for our sins. "God made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, so that we might become the Righteousness of God in Him" (II Corinthians 5:21).
One verse that jumps out at me that further back RC's point is God's statement about Pharaoh... "for this cause have I raised thee up" Exodus 9:16 (KJV) And in very deed for this cause have I raised thee up, for to shew in thee my power; and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth. Proving God made it happen and he is not bring responsive but is responsible for it.
Calvinists want to say that God foreordains whatsoever comes to pass, but in the very next breath, they want to say, “Ah yes, but he did not foreordain that Mr Smith would commit a particular sin at 5:30pm on 3 November 2023.” Well, they can’t have it both ways. If Mr Smith is just left to do his own thing, how can it be said that God predetermines that thing?
This makes perfect sense ... until I read all those verses about what we must do to believe. And all the other verses about what we must do to keep the faith that we believe ("IF" you...!"). I have had this settled after hearing Timothy Keller say the analogy: "The door of salvation has written over the top, "Whosoever believes," but after you walk through, you look back, and over the other side of the door is written, "You didn't choose me, but I chose you." That made it seem like it WAS both God and man (though God is more free, to choose). Now, I don't know if I will ever understand it. However, I like what Paul Washer said: "It's better to have it and not know what to call it, than to know what to call it and not have it." I pray I have His Spirit -- His unbreakable seal upon my heart. Though it has been very hard, even after I first believed.
John 10:27-28 KJV *My sheep hear my voice,* and I know them, *and they follow me:* [28] And *I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.*
@@SSNBN777 Thank you, SB! I was just reading this morning John 1 to 7, which is all over that same topic! I'm starting to see the reason why the book of John is so often recommended to new believers. That, and how it so plainly shows Jesus as God.
Obviously your biggest is you just want the rewards you think you will get from him not HE Himself. You must be Born again born of the Spirit born from Above. His Spirit was prophesied by all the prophets to Convict us of sin, guide us into all truth and make us concerned to follow all His Torah: Law. You need to spend time with Him in His word and in forsaking all worldly concerns. 🤷 There is no methodology we can use to manipulate favor rewards or an audience with Him. If you believe He has chosen you then Trust Him place your faith in Him. If you do not know then you desperately need to read and seek Him. In accordance with the Law and the prophets you will find Him when you seek HIM, not your imagination of who you want Him to be: with all your heart mind and will. He is the only antidote only solution only remedy only cure. But do you know how sick you are?
@@uncasunga1800 I don't know what you read about my life in that comment I left, but I'm desperately sick! I have no hope but Jesus -- no merit or charms to employ, to earn anything good. Mankind is 100% hopeless without him. How intensely we need him, yet how intensely we want to be our own god and own saviour.
If you take the phrase, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated” as being literally about their individual election to salvation, and as representatives of every individual, then you cannot say that the reprobate are reprobated because of their own works that God foreknew. Because that very text says that God chose them before they had done anything good or evil, meaning Jacob was hated and therefore reprobated without regard to any foreknowledge of God. This means election to salvation and election to reprobation BOTH were done without regard to anything that they had done.
Okay. So if God steps back to let Pharaoh's heart be hardened by pharaoh's own desires and actions does he also step back to let Job's heart to cling to God and express his faith? And if that's the case is that not an argument for free will but within the bounds of God's sovereignty?
Job is wicked like pharaoh. If God stepped back, Jobs evil would pour out. Job was only righteous because God had mercy and created righteousness in him. Whenever God pulls away from someone, evil always erupts
2 Peter 3:9 King James Version (KJV) 9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Text out of context is a pretext for a proof text. Who is the letter written to? Who is the "us"? If you are trying to refute the teaching with this verse you struck out. Learn the science of hermeneutics please.
@@joeiiiful first of all, you need to learn to show love to your brothers and sisters. This response was very egotistical. Secondly the verse sais that ALL, again ALL should come to repentance. This teaching contradicts the Bible itself. So to you I will say learn the Bible. Nothing out of context about ALL.
How would you feel if an earthly father showed favor to one son and not the other and just gave the explanation that it's his perogative to do as he wishes. We'd think that was unloving, unkind, and unfair. And the repercussion of God's choice of showing mercy to one and justice to another is dire - it's an eternity in hell. I cannot see how this action demonstrates any love on the part of God. The people commenting here can praise God for His actions because you're one of the elect - or so you think you are - how can you be sure? And what about your loved ones who aren't believers and have no hope of becoming believers unless God draws them? What is the point of sharing the gospel? Why is RC Sproul even giving this class? I'd imagine everyone in attendance is already one of the elect. You may praise God for His mercy toward you, but do you also praise Him for showing His power and wrath toward those He chose not to save?
@KTTGHMTJWYCBLAC RC Sproul was a Calvinist - they believe that no one can come to the Father unless the Father draws him. Only those God has chosen to regenerate and give faith, will be saved. According to Sproul, MacArthur, and Piper - man cannot even desire to know God and thereby seek Him out or hear the Gospel and repent and be saved. God in eternity past decided who will be saved and who will be damned. Man has absolutely nothing to do with it. I have been listening to sermons from all three men and find it all very upsetting. I understand what you're saying and I agree with you - but that is an Armenian doctrine which these men reject. According to them, man has no hope of being saved unless God made the choice to save them before they were born. My point in my example of the 2 sons is that this is not something a loving father would do - to show favoritism. And the consequences of God's favoritism is extremely dire - hell for those He chooses not to save. How can it be loving for God to decide who wil be saved and who will not? How is it even just? True, we all deserve death because we are all sinners. God doesn't have to save anyone. But to have 2 equally guilty people stand before you and let one live and the other go to eternal damnation is not just and not loving. I believe God reveals Himself to everyone. It is clear just from observing nature that He exists. I do not take away from God any of His power or glory in providing a way of salvation to man by believing man has a choice. Calvinists believe that man having a choice to follow Jesus - a choice they make - somehow takes away from God's glory in salvation because they feel this somehow gives man some credit in his salvation. When I heard the Gospel over 30 years ago and realized who I was before God given my sin, I was humbled and repentant and gave God praise for revealing the truth to me. I in no way gave myself any credit for salvation. I believe salvation is a gift - a gift is given and can be recieved or not - it's up to the person it's being given to to make that decision. A gift is not forced on anyone, nor is the value of the gift or the love behind it lessened because the person it's being given to decides not to take it. Calvinists believe God basically forces salvation on a person - they have no choice to reject Him because He gives them the ability to see, believe, repent, etc. It's all His doing and He made that decision from the foundation of the earth. They can't say no because His will is always accomplished and He willed them to be saved. This is the Calvinist interpretation of the doctrine of predestination and election. I have been agonizing over this doctrine for weeks because I want to know the truth about Who God is and understand what He does. I've tried to look at their interpretation of Scripture and wrap my head around it and I just can't see how they can believe this let alone preach it. Where is the hope of the Gospel? Why preach at all? If God already has chosen His elect, why bother? I read comments under their videos by people saying how happy they are that God chose them. How does it feel to know that God may not have chosen your husband, child, parent, or friend? If this doctrine is true, how can I continue loving a Being that would do this to people? My heart is breaking and my faith is crushed.
God fitted vessels of wrath for destruction. It might not feel good to you but it's what The Bible says. In English there is only one word for love. So when you read The Bible in English you only get one. But The Bible wasn't written in English. There's 2 words in The Bible for love. The main one is agape. That word is defined in 2nd John 1:6. The other word is phileo. That's the word for affection. You are confusing the affection type love with the the commandment type love This is a common mistake when people go by the English reading of The Bible.
I am having trouble understanding this. I understand this passage to be Paul explaining to the Jews that they are not all grandfathered in or saved just because they are descendants of Abraham. Isn’t he explaining to them that the gentiles can be saved because of faith- and that Israel is only saved because of faith as well? Please help!
@@scarlettm8702 Yes that's part of it. Eschatology comes into play as most amillennial do not accept a physical Israel which i believe. Most reject the formerly predominant premillennial physical kingdom of ISRAEL. I highly recommend Voddie Bauchams revelation series. It really helpes bring out the absolute necessity of the OT because YHVH ELOHIM ADONAI GOD is talking to all believers of every age. Because only they will listen and heed, by His grace and election. 1 is not a jew if he is 1 outwardly but the inside,is,what matters.
@@augusto.umbelino Well YHVH made the first covenant with a people that were not a people. IF they follow his commands they will live by them. But man is inherently lawless due to hereditary original sin nature. They refused and he divorced them so He fulfills the 2nd covenant He planned or decided on all along, dependent only on Christ.
Its very obvious that there is a resurgence of attacks on Biblical doctrines lately. People hate the doctrines of Grace and God being sovereign and able ti show all of his characteristics. Sad.
No... for it is written, God is good. And since He is good, He is Holy, if He is Holy He is not a hypocrite, and hence consistent and not unfair. EVER! Being merciful is not being unfair. Punishing one and not another is not being unfair, but showing mercy to whom He will.
Tom Bladecki Wrong reply. All those who had faith in God before Jesus was born are with God. They went to heaven when Jesus died. All those who live/lived by faith (our bodies) will be at rest or until he takes us home. These souls are with him now but out bodies will be raised perfectly in the Lords timing and we will all be changed. This is the resurrection mentioned in the Bible. Remember our bodies cannot enter the kingdom of Heaven.
For salvation, we just need to follow the way they did it in Acts? They were baptized in water for the removal of sins and filled with the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:38! Here's why! The gospel is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4. If we are to follow him, we must do the same thing. Death= repentance, Burial = baptism, and resurrection = being filled and rising again from the dead and walking in the newness of life. That's what Acts 2:38 is. We must obey the gospel, 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that OBEY NOT THE GOSPEL of our Lord Jesus Christ... Matthew 7:21-23, Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that DOETH THE WILL OF MY FATHER which is in Heaven. St John 3:3-5, EXCEPT a man, be born of WATER AND OF THE SPIRIT, he cannot enter into the kingdom of GOD. We can't come up with our own gospel. Galatians 1:8-9, But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. Don't be cursed. One way for all people. Jews, Gentiles, and Samaritans. Our salvation has to match up with the scriptures and no scriptures on the subject can be taken away. Eternity is TOOO long to be WRONG! st, John 5:39, Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. The gospels show what Christ has done on the cross for us. The book of Acts shows us the beginning of Christ's Church and how to enter the Church, obeying Acts 2:38. The letters were written to the Church to show us how to behave now that we are born again into the Church. It's better to walk alone than to walk with a crowd going in the wrong direction. Are we supposed to follow the teachings of the apostles? Acts 2:42, And they continued steadfastly in the apostle's doctrines. Ephesians 2:20, We are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone. Don't get Titus 3:5 mixed up with James 2:14-26, about WORKS. One is a WORK of your OWN RIGHTEOUSNESS OR GOOD DEEDS and the other is a WORK OF FAITH. Titus 1:16, They profess that they know God; but in WORKS they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate. God bless you!
If you're a believer and follower of Jesus, you're one of the elect, simple as that. You don't have to sit and wait for a sign and all those verses in the bible commanding people to believe are still applicable.
Rest upon a human choice…You mean a human choice like Adam and Eve made? It does rest upon a human choice to whether to believe or not. What could be clearer in Scripture?! But that God does the believing for me is not belief. But that God does the loving for me is not love. But that God does the choosing for me is not choice. And that is what this comes to. Calvinism is determinism. It changes God, it changes man, and it changes the Gospel. In this specific passage, the central mistake I believe Sproul ( and I grew up listening to Sproul and reading his books - fantastic teacher) makes in in conflating the election of Israel with the election of believers.
May i ask what about people who are born with little to no chance of believing? e.g. people born in islam countries, people simply without anyone to preach the gospel to them, babies that die before they were born, mentally disabled people, etc. Do they just automatically go to hell? Also, what part does human will play in if God just predestines us? What is the point of doing anything? Honestly just really curious
@@augusto.umbelino thanks for answering, but i still have the question of what happens to the people that have no chance of receiving the gospel. Do they receive judgement or mercy?

Blessings.
Thank you, I believe you expressed your thought masterfully.
I 👍 agree!
How deep.Amen. Definitely answers all conflicting questions regarding predestination.
Thats why Paul said we have nothing to boast but boast in Christ. We died and were born-again....the life we live is no more ours but unto God and Gods will and purpose be done. Thanks R.C for awesome explanation.
Such a great explanation of election. 🙏🏼❤️

Oh, yes. Our Creator has the most Holy Holy Holy, sense of humor! :D

This is an awesome teaching of this .
„Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God; for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempteth no man: but each man is tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed. Then the lust, when it hath conceived, beareth sin: and the sin, when it is fullgrown, bringeth forth death.“

A clear presentation on the responsibility the reprobate takes for his own destiny, while God validates His sovereign mercy.
Hi.. it would seem to me, according to this teaching, that no one is responsible for their own destiny, redeemed or reprobate. Had God not made his election, all would go the way of reprobation. For He has made the choice of belief for the believer, even against human will. Maybe I'm just not completely understanding this teaching.
Let's all Chew on this Christians here in Manila. Let God be God!

Concluded all in unbelief that he might have mercy upon all!
Amen! Jesus died for ALL!
Just as we all sinned being IN ADAM, we are justified being IN CHRIST in his death and resurrection.
If your Born from above..

Genesis 25:23 two nations are in thy womb
does Paul not demonstrate here that the election of the nations is done by God's electing of individuals here??
I think it's simpler than that. Each time Moses went to pharaoh with God's command, pharaoh increases in his determination to not obey. So, when God tells Moses "go and tell pharaoh........... I will harden his heart", its the command itself that angers pharaoh and produces more and more resistance.
Thank you!!

Soooo valuable
"for this cause have I raised thee up"
Exodus 9:16 (KJV) And in very deed for this cause have I raised thee up, for to shew in thee my power; and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth.
Proving God made it happen and he is not bring responsive but is responsible for it.

Calvinists want to say that God foreordains whatsoever comes to pass, but in the very next breath, they want to say, “Ah yes, but he did not foreordain that Mr Smith would commit a particular sin at 5:30pm on 3 November 2023.”
Well, they can’t have it both ways. If Mr Smith is just left to do his own thing, how can it be said that God predetermines that thing?
In him.
This makes perfect sense ... until I read all those verses about what we must do to believe. And all the other verses about what we must do to keep the faith that we believe ("IF" you...!"). I have had this settled after hearing Timothy Keller say the analogy:
"The door of salvation has written over the top, "Whosoever believes," but after you walk through, you look back, and over the other side of the door is written, "You didn't choose me, but I chose you."
That made it seem like it WAS both God and man (though God is more free, to choose). Now, I don't know if I will ever understand it.
However, I like what Paul Washer said: "It's better to have it and not know what to call it, than to know what to call it and not have it."
I pray I have His Spirit -- His unbreakable seal upon my heart. Though it has been very hard, even after I first believed.

Yet the Calvinist wants to have both their monergistic salvation and their synergistic damnation.
Space case Jacob was Loved

Amen. Calvinism is wicked and I'm in no hurry to call any teacher who promoted a false jesus and gospel as brother.
You are confusing the affection type love with the the commandment type love
This is a common mistake when people go by the English reading of The Bible.

Its very obvious that there is a resurgence of attacks on Biblical doctrines lately. People hate the doctrines of Grace and God being sovereign and able ti show all of his characteristics. Sad.
If God is God can't He do as He pleases with His creation? Whether or not He is fair or not?
No... for it is written, God is good. And since He is good, He is Holy, if He is Holy He is not a hypocrite, and hence consistent and not unfair. EVER! Being merciful is not being unfair. Punishing one and not another is not being unfair, but showing mercy to whom He will.
Tom Bladecki Baptist*
What a moronic statement Tom, you should be ashamed.
Howard Manley If God was to do as you wrote, know this is how he knows who is his. He gives us free will.
How is “letting go” of Pharoah’s heart passive or different than the alternative stated?
How does one know if they are elected?
You cant not know.
@@augusto.umbelino ah, i see. to my incomplete, sinful logic that still feels unfair to me... Hope God forgives my current foolishness🙁
