Interesting! As a singer I've worked a lot on breath control in my time (although stupidly messed it up by picking up smoking.. although I'm on my way to quitting now which is starting to feel great finally!) so I thought I'd find this easy. In singing I was trained to quickly relax the diaphragm and allow breath to "drop" (or "splat") into the lungs, letting gravity do the work for me. In some ways it is similar to meditatative breathing as there is a particular focus on ensuring there is no tension anywhere in the body, as this translates directly into tension in the larynx, but I actually found this a lot more difficult than I thought I would. Exhalation was all fine but inhaling without splatting felt almost scary for my diaphragm. That said though I definitely felt it towards the end of the video and found myself wanting to continue just to be with the sensation of letting my breath slow. Will definitely practice this. 2025 I'm trying to change my lifestyle a bit and make sure I'm looking after my whole self a lot more. I've only just stumbled across Daoism and this channel and find both the philosophy and the practices inspiring and inviting!
I appreciate your 4,7, 8 meditation advice George and it helps me with different types of meditation to generate deep, calming breaths that help empty the mind and also for Qi to move and nourish. Thank You.
I'm really glad to hear that the practices helped calm you down. Committing to daily practice can truly enhance its benefits. Keep it up, and thank you for sharing your experience! 🙏
This was quite a difficult breathing exercise for me. I will try doing this multiple times over the week to see if it gets any more natural. I'm not used to holding on empty lungs, which makes inhaling after feel really hurried and stressed, so trying to soften that gets tough. Nevertheless, I really liked joining you during this video
This practice usually seems to help me sleep pretty quickly, struggling to sleep tonight so gonna give it a go! Thank you for the practices, wisdom, and experiences George! 🙏 From one George to another
Lovely guidance through different breath practices. The structured breathing with counting, prolonging each stage makes mind more aware, and then appreciate the process of breathing more. In meditation mind can be distracted and having different variations of breathing can give it some useful "material" to stay with the subject of meditation. Until it is trained enough not needing these strategies. Thank you for daoist approach to meditation.
True breathing is much more than a physical practice; it's a spiritual one as well. By breathing deeply and with intention, we aim to connect with the Tao, the natural flow of the universe, enhancing our overall health and spiritual well-being. ☯️ I've always known this practice as Taoist Breathing... but I like the addition of 'true' in the name. Beautiful!
@@George-Thompson Yes. Before I watched this video I read the links you posted in the description and noticed the one sharing "The Tao of Pooh" with your subscribers and viewers. It remains one of the most influential books on my life as it guided me seek and read an English translation of "Tao Te Ching". Which, of course, has been even more impact on me. 🙂
Idk why, every time i style down i get restless arms and/or legs and it becomes so difficult to relax and focus on breathing. I do like this approach so will keep at it, thank you for posting!
Daoism is a treasure
It looks great to take your shoes off and sit there next to nature

That's a very nice spot you chose. Reminds me of the Hundred Acre Wood.
Is that from Winnie the Pooh? 😂
