Hello 😊 I have just set up a 6 gallon nano tank that has a built in filter. I have added a protein skimmer and a small pump for now. I will switch the pump to a adjustable wave maker asap I just needed something that was able To not overpower the animals that I’m putting in however I think it is causing micro bubbles so hence the change. However I can see that both that and the protein skimmer seek to be causing this issue? I’m unsure what to do I adjusted the protein skimmers level and it still doesn’t seem to do the job I’m thinking should I get a smaller protein skimmer? This one did say it was advertised for nano tanks but I do know some people consider below 50 gallons as nano therefore it may just be way to big for mine. What do you think? Thanks for the advice
I just got a new fx6. I took some of the used media from my fx4 like two of the coarse sponges and a few of the pot scrubbers. It’s been about 4 days. I’m still getting micro bubbles. I can hear the air or something every once in a while swishing around the pump area when the micro bubbles happen. Mind you my fx4 has zero micro bubbles. I think I might unplug it, Empty the water and unscrew the pump and then just put everything back. This is a brand new fx6 so it shouldn’t be the pump/impeller part but worth a try I guess
Do the hoses have any dips? Any loose connections? I also turn it off and let the air purge a few times after a water change. It sure is irritating having those microbubbles!
@@CichlidCharmer I’m in talks with fluval right now. Had to send them a lot of pictures and videos. It’s a brand new fx6. Had me lubricate the o-rings but still I get the micro bubbles. Waiting for their next thing for me to troubleshoot with.
Oh man. I think I found the culprit. I took out all the media and forgot that there was I think a thin black (carbon) pad underneath all my ceramic rings. This tray was takin from my fx4. I took that out and that pad was probably clogging up the filter ! I’ll keep monitoring it but I believe that was it!
Are some micro bubbles good for a saltwater tank or is it all about flow of the water ? Sorry if dumb questions just wanna make sure i dont have any hiccups with my tank. Its a 55 gallon tank i have a bubbler but i wasnt sure if the bubbler is creating enough oxygen for the tank ? Or combination of bubblet and good flow. Or do you want that out take creating some micro bubbles for enough oxygen on the tank ? Hopefully i was able to make sence with what i was trying to ask and explain
great video an your tank looking great the new setup fish looks awesome great job a question i have a 75gal an i have fx6 and a sunsun 704b do you think that's too much for a 75gal African cichlids tank it's about 22 fish
It’s always good to have redundancy in vital components, but an fx6 is plenty and should produce a pretty strong current. Having said that, I do have an fx4 and a 407 on my 75g. I definitely don’t need a Wavemaker in there, but everyone is happy - not constantly fighting the current. If you have both, you could set up the fx6 and see if additional current would be a problem and then choose to add the sun sun or not.
@CichlidCharmer yah you think so saying fx6 is a overkill by it's self lol for a 75gal lol one time someone told me having a fx6 on 75gal is like having a sump on it but you know us Hobbies fish keepers nothing is good enough to us in our eyes we always see something wrong wen there's nothing wrong lol 😀
It's the Major downside of having sponge filters too. You can have perfect water clarity, but as soon as you put a air stone or sponge filter then your going to always see them
@CichlidCharmer yeah I get them because I have 3 bubble makers on my back wall of the fish tank. If you look at my video about our ranchu and oranda adventure about halfway through the video you can see them all. I've just learnt to deal with them now
Clogged fx6 media in the canister. It's happened to me before, almost like the motor is working hard to push water through so bubbles end up coming out. I have now added pre-sponge filters on both fx6's and work great.
@@CichlidCharmer yes sir, and even though it don't look big on his videos, when I got mine I was like holy s$@& lmao. I did utilize a zip tie on the intake stem itself and slide sponge over it, but it doesn't tear up or get caught. Fits snug.

do you run an sponge filter in your tank or just the FXs? I have a sponge/air filter in mine but I hate it. I have always had it in case I need to quickly setup a hospital tank but I am considering removing it completely. I run a large Jabao wave maker so my thought is I don't need the surface agitation.
Hi Don! I used to do what you are doing. I also hate the aesthetic, so I do it a little differently now. If I need a hospital or quarantine tank, I place a sponge filter inside them. Then I just go rob a little bio media from an fx6, place it in a mesh bag and place it on the sponge filter. It’s been doing the trick for a few years now 💪
Cichlid Charmer, Nice video about the micro bubbles. I have sponge filters in all my tanks so I always see the bubbles but they go away fast. In my CA 100 gal tank I have an internal filter that pushes out air so there is always micro bubbles in the tank. Some of us can’t afford the big canister filters. 😢😂
I’m wondering if you have an insight on this. I’m currently running an fx5 and fx6 on my 180. I replaced two media baskets in the fx5 with matrix. Since I replaced them it’s been louder (like you can hear the water moving through it) and producing micro bubbles. I’ve opened and closed it, checked the orings, and hoses and still micro bubbles. I just decided to throttle the output and the micro bubbles stopped. I’d like to run it fully open but for now this seems like a good temporary solution. Any ideas? Love the content!
Very interesting. I wonder if there is too much matrix in the basket? If you overstuff it can reduce the flow and that can cause micro bubbles. Perhaps experiment with different amounts of matrix. It should be after your sponges, but I’m sure you already know that. Just in case though. Thank you!
Dealt with them about a month ago, have herd it can be the propeller needing cleaned in thr FX6. Tried cleaning that and just about everything in this video, after cracking upen the filter and cleaning it, they disappeared. I have a feeling it was a less than ideal seal at one of the gaskets.
Oh that’s a good guess! I don’t know if it was from the chemical process of decomposition combined with the fact that there Was too much waste in there, but it was definitely ready for a cleaning.
But isn't that a good thing? The bubbles popping will bring oxygen in to tank right? I actually use a spray bar in my fx2 and the fish are very active now than when I only used v shaped filter output,
On the surface of the water bubbles are good. These micro bubbles tend to stay in the water column and just blow around the tank and sometimes they settle on panels and decor. I’ve also heard they they can be bad for your fish, but that isn’t confirmed.
It's the actual rubber from the FX inlet and outlet connectors inside the tank that is causing me issues. It's a new filter and because the rubber is of a good quality, it leaks like a white calcium powfer out that turns the rubber connectors from black to white. I scrub them with a toothbrush twice a week but the white powder stuff covers the water surface and I can never clear it all. it is pure clear water where the flow comes out but the rest of the water surface is covered in little white dots. I'm hoping that eventually the rubber calcium type stuff will expire and no more will seep out and then my water surface can be clear once again...Sorry for the essay!
@@CichlidCharmer I'm just hoping it has a limited timeframe though for doing what it does as I don't want to be scrubbing those connectors forever haha!
That's great. I've had some microbubbles before but it was a pretty long time ago. I think it was because the hoses had some slack, but I couldn't say for sure it's been so long.
Fluval suggested maintenance is monthly clean and carbon replacement. Do you replace the carbon but just not clean yours? I've been doing mine monthly since I have to get to the bottom basket to change the carbon anyways. Is it just a marketing tactic to get people to buy more Fluval media?
I don’t use any chemical filtration at all. I’m not positive why they tell you to clean monthly, but there are some filters if memory serves that tell you to replace your sponges and possibly biomedia every so often, and you only need to replace those if they are falling apart, so who knows.
