I had to hang rocks in my aquarium avatar style to create middle ground hides for the fish or else the axolotl eats them all.
I like the conservation message from this channel. Education is so important to promote responsible owners, and to not upset natural ecosystems. Other animals that there are more of in captivity vs wild is red wolves, and the Mexican grey wolf.
Gils are in terrible condition he's practically ready to leave and morph into a salamander, that specific brand of black substrate is harmful to their skin, the lights aren't good for their low eyesight and can be harmful, and the biggest offender here is that Axolotls don't need to go to the surface for air, they can breathe perfectly fine underwater, this much movement and swimming to the surface shows that there is not enough oxygen in the tank
Whilst axolotls do get nearly all their oxygen requirements from the water using their external feather gills, they do also have lungs. Axolotls will sometimes be observed swimming to the surface for a gulp of air.
Then about his coloration and gills. Not all axolotls have dense gills, even you can see him as a baby axolotl and his gills are same and about that coloration, it is not albino axolotl but other morph that have this kind of colorations
The movement is kinda off, you are right, but I think it is because of that small tank. Axolotls are more pet rocks than active animals. I would add more plant and choose different substrate but I don't think that he looks neglected.
I have a tip: if you feed harry live food like for example worms then replace the substrate with lego baseplates. You read that right. It gives them something to grip onto so they don’t slip

ok so im not going to claim to know anything about water but i do know that fans just blow air around and it doesnt affect the temperature. its possible that your house's thermostat is set to 75-76, but that particular room isnt doing a good job with trapping cool/hot air so just in case i would get a chiller since i heard chicago can get pretty hot

there is a lake in utah that has wild axolotls its pretty cool. ive caught and released some in the past. wed bring plastic fish tank up there to look at them then let them go

You actually are supposed to make sure that there is an area in the tank without sand. Axolotls use suction to eat their food and they could accidentally eat sand or rocks, so make sure you use big rocks or only cover half of the tank with sand. That’s what I do
You also should NEVER use a black light or blue led light or really any bright lights because it can hurt their eyes. They are sensitive to bright lights and are nocturnal
Keeping an axolotl happy is a task forsure but if you stay on top of water temp and parameters, water changes and a healthy diet its easy sailing... Ours was healthy never got any rot or fungus infections. But had to re-home him after a year due to moving. Miss my little dude 😢
You should have put bigger pebbles to make a path from the bridge to either side, for aesthetic purposes and he wouldn't be able to swollow the pebbles since they'd be too big for him to ingest but small enough to fit the scale of the decorations

and you can turn on lights for plants daily, but you must offer them enough hides/shady places because you will stress them.

Lego has on their website that their pieces shouldn’t be used in aquariums unfortunately because the plastic leaches toxins.

It affects the water temperature by rising the level of evaporation. The evaporation is what actually decrease the temperature
