Veep: Selina's Sacrifice | HBO Replay
I nearly cried during this scene. Her and Gary. It was perfectly written and executed. There was a brief moment when Selina was human. When she realises Gary was the only person who actually cared.
It's the scene following this where she all alone in The Oval Office with no one around that it dawns on her what she has done, then it's just the icing on the cake that her funeral is forgotten about when it's annouced Tom Hanks has died. It's the perfect ending for such a despicable character.
And her daughter was celebrating with drinks during Selina’s funeral that she watched from home.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Tony Hale knocked it out of the park on this episode. This scene is funny and heartbreaking at the same time
This was horrible and perfect. Writing is on point.
At least President Splett got to have 2 terms and won a Nobel Peace Prize after
@@deyesed I hated that fact.
Loved it. So difficult to pull off an ending that suits the story and the characters, but this was perfect. Selena lost literally everything to get the presidency... and was forgotten in the end.
@@deyesed I felt the same way it was the only thing that made me feel like America might have still had some hope
The moment she completes her transformation into a monster. Absolutely brilliant writing.
“*And there’s nothing anyone can do to stop me* ...from standing and walking for my country” right after Gary is hauled off. Whoever wrote the screenplay for that scene isn’t getting paid enough.
supervillain moment
The split of a second where her eyes were torn between being attached and moving forward... it's really heart-breaking. Perfectly executed by Julia.
I love the theory that Gary was Selina’s soul and her selling him out was the final stage of her selling her soul to become president.
The intricate detail in this scene is when Selina was called on stage she was hugging Gary and she directly just turn around towards the stage. She didn't have the courage to see his face on last time. She too somewhere loved her.
Vaibhav Sharma I see what you did there
@@Mcelly58 what do you mean?
Vaibhav Sharma When you said that she too somewhere loved her. All throughout the show Gary was called a girl and I thought you were referencing that.
@@Mcelly58 hahaha that's a mistake, not at all what I intended. It's 'him' but yes given Gary's involvement in womanhood throughout the show by beautifying Selina, her too makes sense.
@@Mcelly58 I thought Vaibhav was being ironic about her narcissism and the low self worth underneath that.
Honestly I agree with the idea that Selena sacrificed more than anyone. There is no part of Selena that is Selena. She gave her all to politics to the point that she is nothing without it. Her every thought, idea, and whim is solely on the basis of popularity, and that is very sad indeed.
I wish we could have seen her after her one term, growing older and more bitter without anyone around her.
Interesting, I like your take, Malcom Tucker has a dialogue about what you are talking about
That's actually really cool you pointed this out
this is true. the other moment she seemed more human than any other was when she broke up with the qatari ambassador, who she genuinely seemed happy with, in order to pursue her presidential ambitions. that was the first in a long, long line of sacrifices. she won in the end, but only by losing everything that mattered.
@@MythyandrPryderi”You have to swallow this life whole and let it grow inside you like a parasite until one day it stares out of your eyes and tells you what to do.”
I disagree. She gave everything to herself. Her need for power was part of her and it was everyone else she sacrificed for it
The fact that this satirical comedy had a more fluid, satisfying character arc of a woman in power becoming corrupt than Danaerys in GoT just goes to show the difference good writing can make.
Well said, Veep is one of the few shows whose ending was well-written.
I didnt like the ending. Like this scene was perfect. But later it went downhill with the epilogue and the time leap. They should have zoomed out here and ended it right there. Leaving us to wonder what kind of a president she d have made IF she became one at all.
But yeah I agree with you OP. A world of difference. I miss this show so much.
@@Trollika_Devi
If they had ended here we would have seen Selena finally get what she most wanted by losing what she most loved.
Which was always the theme, that the was never a win-win in politics and life.
Thrm destroying Selena as a president, killing her off and giving Richard a happy ending just seemed out of character for the show.
@@SaintSwithinsDay Selina didn't smile when her daughter was born. She was always a sociopath.
was there an arc? wasnt she corrupt from the beginning
Gary’s face... I just can’t
First, the way he told her "am not going anywhere", and later the clueless/ disappointment look when he was being arrested. He is a great actor.
This show couldn't be any better
After Ben told her she knows what to do, and she yelled at Amy to get Jonah as her Veep. I knew she was gonna destroy lives, never thought it would be Gary thou.
This video is the last push I needed to rewatch the whole show.
Everybody needs a Gary in their life.
What a great show in every way it was!
Especially when you’re running for president lol
@@marioescalante4401 yes that’s the point lol
No.
No one needs a Gary. You can actually fetch your own coffee or whatever.
@@jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjj178 he did Everything for her, held all the information she needed on everyone and everything. Also had every product she loved in his bag. You did not watch the show at all, because getting her coffee was his least important task. Clueless comment
The timing in this scene was perfect. Selina starts talking about 'sacrificing' and there comes the FBI to get Gary
You can almost feel the metaphorical knife in Gary's back in this scene. 🔪
For me, this ending was EPIC! If I could, I would have ended the episode with her looking sad sitting in the Oval Office. We wouldn’t know what happened in her future years. We would just notice how miserable she was and how power corrupted her. It’s like a comedy House of Cards, with a woman being the center and with a better script.
The things we do for power. This show had an amazing ending. Selina is a full antihero.
*Villain
She’s not a hero in any way. I thought they were clear about that.
"I couldn't have done it without you..." "I'm not going anywhere..." Has there ever been filmed a more ruthlessly sardonic and yet earnestly moving exchange?
This gives me goosebumps - she’ didn’t even regret it
Such a sociopath... I love her
Nah she has feelings, she just shoves them down. A sociopath would feel nothing
@@Aced84 Isn’t that psychopaths?
Narcissist
@@JClayJaseDetroit All sociopaths are narcissists but not all narcissists are also sociopaths
Being a sociopath is a requirement to become President
Who is this God that keeps blessing America?
The almighty dollar
Wow man.. that's a one billion dollar question 🙌😎
Gaahd 'l myeddy .
right cause I'm thinking this god is cursing America
Gary was in love with her.
I just watched that episode and finished the series last weekend. I loved the series, but from this point on I found the way it turned out for everybody rather disturbing. The exception is what ultimately happened to Richard Splett.
Yhh heartbreaking as it is it is the point of the show.. all these ppl sacrificing happiness and morals for apparent success
It's satire. Don't take it too seriously. Laugh at the darkness of it. Like Dr. Straneglove, A Clockwork Orange, this show is as good as satire gets.
@@adamsmith2331 sorry dude but i cant laugh at poor gary here
@@dallasskywalker Then you are not fun to hang out with
@@adamsmith2331 this is really sad and heart breaking. But hey this is also a question of opinion so i respect yours dude
This was the scene that killed her character for me. Up until then I’d rooted for her, wanted her to be good.
Spectacular writing.
Really? It's pretty clear from season 1 episode 1 that you shouldn't root for her...
The scene about being grateful for a mass shooting didn’t sway you? 🤷♂️
You rooted for her up until then? She was awful the entire time and wasn't written for us to back her....
@@anarchist_parable right 😭
@@anarchist_parable i think she was more complex than that. there were certainly episodes where it felt like the entire world was against her; she became the underdog and the world roots for an underdog. And it’s not like she was the only immoral person in the show; the show portrays politics as a cesspool where only selfish people like Selina win. Although I personally thought she was an awful person the whole show, there were certainly moments where I thought she might’ve been redeemable. But yeah, she’s pretty bad lol.
This was the closest thing to an in person 2020 convention
Gary definitely didn't deserve to go to prison, but he was an enabler of Selina's abusive and vicious personality and just as mean to others as she was. His treatment of Catherine was proof of this; he may have truly loved her, but he was too blinded by her affection to see how it would go badly for him.
This is the moment Selina Meyer became Heisenveep.
Τhe cracks in her voice while she is talking to Gary...
Gary was the only person who saw her as she saw herself in her very narcissistic life.
The look that Tony Hale gave her was heartbreaking. I think he never looked at her like that regardless of the awful thing she did in the past 7 seasons. Face of someone deeply betrayed.
Secretary of swagriculture
SPOILER:
i think the episode should’ve ended with her in the office alone. i think the “24 years in the future” thing was silly (silly is different than funny) and unnecessary. there’s a difference between being comedy/satire and being cartoonish. like yes i know the good ole “look theyre old but up to the same shenanigans” bit is used at the end of a lot of shows but it just seemed dumb in an otherwise interesting episode. Anyone else?
I totally respect your view, but I think the show ending with someone like Selena being the president after being ruthless to everyone around her and going against any principles she had sends a wrong message. If it had to end there, her political career should have ended without her being the president. The "24 years in future" just confirms that there is nothing good about her to be written in the history. Showing Richard, a man with integrity and honesty as the two time Nobel prize winning president may be a bit unrealistic (wish if it were real). But it gives us hope that good people can do good things and history would appreciate them.
I agree, fast forwarding into time on final episodes of shows normally feels lazy and unsatisfying to me. If I was on a writing team for any show I would forbid it, unless it really services the story. Not just for cheap visual gags and easy closure. Silicone Valley did it too, and although it wasn't awful I still was not a fan. Weeds did it and that was the worst (Although that show had already tanked by that stage)
@@AravindUkrd i think we needed to see that the end of such a despicable character is also very sad and pathetic
And at last she is alone in the office
No family no friend no one who care
That's why she didn't run for office again
Guess Gary's labor day sacrifice wasn't anything legal otherwise he could have leveraged it to stay out prison
“I proudly accept…”
Just horrifying how she accurately replicates that robotic Clinton speech pattern. Be interesting to know if that was a conscious choice or not.

Don't give up your Gary 😢
Great Hitlary Clinton impression, I must say!
Very good
she is so beyond evil
Why didn’t she pardon him??
Because she was a monster. She never visited him once.

Why does she sacrifice Gary?
The scandal, she made him take the fall for it bc she didn’t have a chance of winning with it
What scandal?
