      Snaggle Toothed good cause I've never understood people who assume others are children just for liking animation. With all the critical praise, golden globe nominations, well written stories, gorgeous art work, and many people who analyze them like this channel, it still doesn't make sense why people like you treat animation like a joke. Also I've never understood people who can't argue their point beyond just repeating their point, but I guess I'll understand that when I'm older too. Oh well

    • @Anachronismgorl
      @Anachronismgorl 5 лет назад +52

      From a Bicycle seat Well it's not a perfect analogy. I think my reasoning is they both end their series being far worse people than they were originally and in that respect ”Veep” is a better demonstration of a downward spiral. You're right though Dany started off as basically a good person and she fell much further.

    • @LFire12
      @LFire12 5 лет назад +41

      Can't agree with the analogy at all. For starters the writing bears no comparison. There was no gradual descent, Dany was a good person till her sudden and jarring turn around in the final two episodes of the season. Everything you could charge her with was 100 percent also done by other good characters in the show. And secondly as they kept hammering home (terribly) was she was her madness, her fall was in no way dictated by her principles or personal character flaws...this was a genetic predisposition she (apparently) could not escape. They are not comparable as characters at all, except that they are women....

    • @Anachronismgorl
      @Anachronismgorl 5 лет назад +59

      Lian McGuire Well that's sort of my point. If the writers of Game of Thrones Wanted Dany to become a villain they should have set it up properly. Veep did a better job showing Selina progressively becoming a worse person so her being a villain makes sense. Hence why I said Daenerys Targaryen’s character arch done right.

    • @ModeratelyAmused
      @ModeratelyAmused 5 лет назад +18

      @@LFire12 Dany was a good person? She was a self righteous child that demanded she be on the throne that her father tried to burn to the ground. She was a crazed lunatic that would do anything to be on top. She talked about breaking the wheel but only after she was on top which didn't make her different. She refused all peaceful negotiations and when once again confronted with the truth that she was not the rightful heir, she wanted to keep it a secret because it was never about being justice but just finishing what her father had started. Don't be fooled by the freeing slaves making her a good person. I do agree with you though that Selina was never a good person either. She was a heartless politician through and through. But you are correct that Selina didn't have a story arc. She talked a lot about her legacy but was always in denial from episode one that it didn't matter what she did as long as she became president. She was never meant to be an empathetic character. Much like Julia's other two long running characters, Selina was just meant to be a hot mess through and through.

    I never thought of Amy, Kent or Dan's ending as depressing. I truly think they just embodied who they were. Amy and Dan may have loved each other, even briefly, but they would have made a miserable couple and awful parents (Amy would not have enjoyed being a mother.) Kent has a child working in NASA and lives on a farm with his wife, away from politics and living simply - he won. It was only Gary who I really felt for. I do believe he and Selina were twisted soulmates in a sense.

    • @strangething7379
      @strangething7379 4 года назад +50

      I don't consider Amy or Dan or Kent to be very good people but I think the ending of Veep is pretty bitter when Selina effectively burns everyone who's worked for her in the past 7 years. She sticks Amy with Jonah, she makes Richard fire Dan, she pushes Jonah as veep which drives Kent away, she quickly moves on from Ben's heart attack, and she scapegoats Gary, and this isn't even mentioning the long estrangement from her family. Selina gets what she wants in the end but realizes what it cost pretty much everything. So i guess even if most of these characters aside from Selina are better for it in the long run, it's still kinda depressing when it happens

      @blueskybelyr 4 года назад +28

      @@strangething7379 Oh, Selina sacrificing everything to become president gave her the lonely ending she deserved, absolutely, and it did impact the others. @@blueskybelyr Yeah Selina had the second worst ending of them all. Not only did she die alone & truly unhappy, clearly from the way she looked around sad in the Oval Office alone, but she will be remembered as a shitty president. Look how quickly they moved on from her death to the death of Tom Hanks. She’s nothing. The rest of her staff won. As soon as she fucked everyone over, they ended up leaving that toxic relationship with Selina & lived better lives because of it. Minus Gary who truly lost the most. Was in prison for years & is still loyal despite it all. Tony Hale described it as a dog returning to eat its vomit.

    There's a greater focus on Selina getting what she deserves and giving up Gary was the final nail in the coffin. But maybe it also shows how everyone has to take responsibility for their actions,including Gary. He paid the price for forever enabling a monster.

    I always thought Gary got what he deserved. Every time Selina said something terrible to someone, Gary was right behind her nodding in affirmation.
    I remember how happy Gary was to dock Amy a day of pay for having an abortion, one that Amy specifically wanted her to have.
    I loved it how many of the characters seemingly had favorable outcomes in their lives, while Selina was alone and ultimately had her funeral overshadowed by Tom Hanks.

    So, she is like Daenerys but done and written correctly? At the end, Danny was also alone, everyone who loved her either died or betrayed her (except Grey Worm but he is basically her VP). She sacrificed an entire city to make sure she would be queen and will burn anything to make sure she has power. Whoever didn’t bend the knee to her would die. And when she died, politics moved on and the world didn’t crumble into pieces after all.
    Edit: just realized they made the comparison in part 2 video

    I felt so much empathy for Catherine during the entire series. How Selina couldn't love her own daughter was beyond my understanding. Catherine really was Selina's biggest victim. Selina paid no attention to Catherine ever .. so much that the audiences also stop paying attention to Catherine's entry and exit into the show. She becomes irreverent and unlikeble to the audiences in a similar fashion that she is to Selina. Its interesting how Selina missed/mentioned Catherine's name over the phone in the last scene.
    Either way, they were a very interesting mother-daughter duo. Great writing there.

      I tend to think that was why Kent liked Sue so much: she was so hyper-focused and efficient at one job that it was almost mechanical. She's likely more loyal to her desk and computer than any actual person, and I remember them joking about her being in an old portrait, and it made me think of how she's basically the physical embodiment of an office fixture. Far as we can tell, all she does all day is keep people away from the V.P.
      I also think it may have been why they didn't have Sue at the funeral, nor have any mention of what she's doing in the year 2040. I think we're just supposed to assume she's still manning the desk, and we're left to wonder like Kent if she's some kind of immortal being tethered to the White House for all eternity

    Lovely analysis, love the show. But I want to say that Gary was not her soul. He enabled her throughout the entire series, and Gary himself is quite vicious and cruel to other characters. He does love her unconditionally though, but I don't feel that he made Selina a better person. He was just this last person we thought she would betray. It would be like Dany killing Missandei. Gary was not Selina's Missandei. He was her dragon. If the show was about Gary, it would be a tragic cautionary tale, but he would have gotten exactly what he deserves. He was the minion.

Instead, she ends up winning and losing everyone that ever loved and cared for her. Think of it, that's a better punishment coz it made her stop and question her life choices. If she'd lose, she'd never come to appreciate the people in her life, but only come to blame them even more. Only wining and losing them could do that to her.

    I still feel very perplexed about the ending of veep. I can’t help but feel it ended up taking itself way too seriously. It began with a bunch of dimensional and real characters that lived in genuinely funny situations to a Shakespearean tragedy. It was like a melodrama by the end and we lost touch with the sharpness of the writing and the acting from when veep was at its peak (season 3-5).
    It was too self aware by the end and the characters were just caricaturist versions of what they once were.

  • @thomasdillon6001
    @thomasdillon6001 Год назад +2

    (SPOILERS)
    After Selina finally becomes President but fails miserably, the core story is over. Like most sitcoms, the show has to change direction at this point to avoid becoming repetitive. I think there are two ways of dealing with this. The first option is to just end the show once the core story is complete, like 'The Thick Of It' (the show from which Veep was adapted) did. Four seasons of political ups and downs, ending with the final departure of one or more central characters from politics. By this point most fresh comedic material arising from the original premise will have been used up effectively, without becoming tired. A short run, with consistently excellent satire.
    Alternatively, the show can pivot to an adjusted tone or premise to 'unlock' new sources of comedy which are still fresh. This is what 'Veep' does: it becomes significantly less grounded after season 5, with greater stakes and increased focus on dramatic plot points. While this might not be the most elegant solution, I do think Veep pulls it of far better than most sitcoms: the later seasons, although a bit different, remain very funny, well written and still pretty close in feel to the rest of the show. If the producers want more seasons, this is as good they get.
    The main source of difference this creates in Veep, in my view, is the gradual erosion of balance between misery and sympathy. In the earlier seasons, with almost exclusively British writers, all the main characters are constantly mocked, betrayed and disappointed; they are also, for the most party, equally unpleasant, disloyal and unreliable to others. Therefore, when one of them is miserable, it is poetic justice: mean characters get their comeuppance. In later seasons, however, this changes. As more American writers came onboard, most notably with the change of showrunner, character arcs become more important and give rise to increasingly complex emotional dynamics. This makes characters far more sympathetic, relatable and, consequently, tangible. Throwaway insults are no longer just punchlines: they cause genuine, lasting offence to characters, and elicit far more genuine sympathy from the viewer.
    This is most keenly felt with Catherine, one of very few genuinely sympathetic characters in the early show. At first, Selina's narcissistic neglect is frustrating and disappointing but remains comedic, precisely because Catherine is generally able to ignore it. Her character is sort of 2.5 dimensional: she is a faintly tragic but stoic figure, whose emotional state is stable and only temporarily affected by any individual slight. This leaves room for comedy, as the viewer needn't worry too much about the consequences of Selina's dismissive remarks. In later seasons, however, this balance is lost: the impact of neglect on Catherine's mental health is made explicit, while the increased emotional stakes of her relationship and pregnancy make her mother's selfishness increasingly unforgivable even in the heightened context of the sitcom. By making Catherine's character too real, the audience no longer perceives Selina as merely selfish: instead, she is cruel. In a cynical comedy like Veep selfishness is often funny. But cruelty is not.
    In short, by making characters more complex and sympathetic, it becomes far more difficult to make jokes about them without addressing emotional consequences. This means that instead of (very solid) characterisation being in service of comedy, the opposite occurs: comedy creates consequences, driving sincere character drama. In Veep this is generally done subtly and well, but it is a big change which does palpably alter the atmosphere in later seasons. I think this is why the betrayal of Gary is played so straight: the previous season or so, through the development of both Selina and Gary's characters, made the former gradually more cruel and the latter more sympathetic: by the time this process is resolved, the emotional wight involved become too great to be played for laughs, demanding a dramatic take. It also abandons the principle of comeuppance, since Gary did not deserve the betrayal, despite his many serious flaws. This plot point, by virtue of the very evolution in approach which served as its premise, demanded drama.

    I've never seen a victory as sad as Selina's...

    This was so well done. You answered so many questions I had, and also introduced me to things I didn’t know. (Margot was her BD)
