  • I'm sorry for parts of the video being muted, some guy content id claimed multiple parts of the video even though the thing he's claiming on his channel is literally royalty free. SORRY AGAIN!
Oh god I did not intend for this video to be this long dear god what have I done. Was meant to be like a 30-40 minute video but I recorded way longer that I should have apparently. I said towards the end of the video but let me reiterate that I don't want to be a minecraft exclusive youtuber, but I would enjoy continuing to play fear nightfall if you would like to see more. I will finish Minecraft PSX sometime probably within the month, please do not comment that you want more minecraft on every video I upload until then though. Also something cool is that two parts of this video apparently have already gotten copyright claimed due to music used in the modpack, that's incredibly annoying so if you're one of the first people to see this video just know that if you see the part where I say spider four times around the 34-36 minute mark just know you're very special, and something around the 1:12 -1:13 minute mark got copyright claimed but RUclips wouldn't actually tell me that initially only when fixing the other one which also means I can't view what it was at that time. I would get annoyed at the modpack creator for using copyrighted stuff but honestly I doubt they did it looks like its just some jackass claiming generic horror music in order to try and get easy money so I'm not blaming the modpack or the dev. And days after uploading parts continue to get cooyright claimed, if audio starts to drop in quality it’s because I used RUclips’s edit out the music feature so sorry, but some Jackhole keeps copyrighting music in this video

As a buncha people in this comment said- it already quite is.
A bunch of modders for Minecraft either don't understand what horror is or opt for using the cheapest kind of horror.
From the Fog at least attempts to build dread rather than just consantly jumpscare you and a bunch of mods in the Fear NIghtfall seem to also attempt that- like the one which let's mobs break into your house (this is shit no mincrafters expect, their house not being so impervious as before).
But mostly, as I said in other comment- Minecraft horror should be about dread, that something is not as much as jumping at you, but is always after you and you find aftermaths, not active activity

I've noticed an effect that I'm sure has a name, but I don't know what it is. Horror games stop being scary when they get too hard. It seems counter intuitive at first, but as it turns out, the more the player has to do the same thing over and over, the less scary it gets. The true enemy of a horror game is frustration.
Here's a neat coincidence: The harder you make Minecraft, the more annoying it gets. If you die, you either go through the whole rigmarole of getting everything again. With the vanilla game's easier difficulty it's almost ignorable, especially given that you can stockpile resources and make backup gear. However, Minecraft apparently has to be hard to be scary. How do you make Minecraft harder? Crank up the numbers. It's pretty much the only thing you can do aside from completely redesigning the game's systems. The fear comes from the atmosphere and the threat. Minecraft can achieve the atmosphere rather easily, even the vanilla game had the vibe for some players. The threat, however, is negligible. The game's enemies are balanced to be easier to compensate for the poor combat. Not a non-threat, but too easy to be heart-poundingly tense. Not to mention the cultural familiarity with any of its vanilla mobs. It's hard to make a creeper scary when I'm thinking of Dan Bull rapping about them.
So we crank up the numbers and what do we get? A mob that kills you in 1-2 hits. Very threatening, yes, and maybe even frightening... until you die the first time and come to the crushing realization that you have to do that same thing you do every time you die. After that, it's an annoyance. It's not *scary*, startling maybe, but frustrating always. And that's a big reason why Minecraft will never be truly scary. The game's design is the total opposite of what you'd want from a horror game.
Horror relies on keeping things fresh. Minecraft keeps things fresh by updating the game and adding a new gimmick. Once you've experienced it a couple times it gets stale. So, in an attempt to make Minecraft scary, you only really have a couple options.
    1. Boost the atmosphere and leave the threat vanilla. It's a safe but boring option that *just might* give some people what they want. But it's all build up and no payoff.
    2. Boost the atmosphere and boost the threat. Now it's scary for a bit and then annoying.
    3. Boost atmosphere, threat, and variety. This pack picked this option. The gameplay is now hyper-specific in what you need to do and actively discouraging you from engaging with the game's mechanics, of which it added many. Half of the mods are meant to make the game more difficult, half of the mods are meant to give the game enough new content to entice you to slog through it.
I might sound a bit cynical about this. It's because I am. I've got a bit of a bias when it comes to Minecraft's game design and how mods interact with it, mostly from experience playing it. I would (and did) buy into Minecraft having horror potential. But I just flat out do not think it can be done in a playable form. I respect the admirable and above average quality attempt from the modpack author and I wish them luck in the future with whatever they may do.

      @koopliss 4 месяца назад +73

i've made a ton of horror focused packs in private to play with friends at this point, i agree with quite a lot of this comment. Seeing someone else make a horror modpack is genuinely cool to me, but unfortunately... this attempt really does just learn far more on the "Hard to survive means its totally horror!" angle, which i just don't like. i've found a lot of horror focused mods work better when they aren't utterly ridiculous... and unfortunately, the modpack author of this specific pack, is kinda infamous in some ways, specifically, they are an author who churns out kitchen sink modpacks left and right, so the problems of this pack isn't exactly a new problem...
Modpack rambling to i guess give an example of a """"horror"""" modpack that CAN work, atleast it managed to work for my friends, which was a pleasant surprise.
The last horror modpack i made, which was.... unfortunately before this sudden boom in horror modding, so now i'm sure there has to be some other hidden gems out there i could add to it, i wanted to do a balance of still keeping the gameplay of minecraft, and adding a good amount of vanilla plus mods, or mods that wouldn't feel THAT far fetch'd from vanilla, but also include a horror twist to it atleast a little. this one was made around halloween time, so i opted to include some halloween and fall mods to spice things up. i wanted nighttime and caves to be feared, without being overly punishing, and i wanted the daytime to feel welcoming and actually nice.
As for the horror aspect, the mods i ended up going with for that pack was Alex's caves (since one of its caves IS horror themed.), A tweaked version of Alex's mobs removing a lot of the animals that didn't fit the vibe, and bumping the spawnrate of Murmurs and cave centipedes underground up, as well as allowing ghost miners to spawn in any cave. i made sure to keep their spawnrates reasonable, so encountering atleast the first 2 would be both memorable, and an "oh fuck" moment.
The Cave dweller is... kinda the only good "dweller" mod out there, so we tried it during its height if popularity. It's one of the only one of these dweller mods that actually feel **Even remotely** balanced, with the dweller being able to be killed of course.
Ambient noises and other sound overhaul mods really helped out with a lot of the horror elements, definitely some of my favorite aspects of the pack. i feel like so many horror related things, minecraft especially just ignore or don't care about sound design, and.... that has always irked me.
Earth2Java was added for a couple reasons, but it included pretty balanced two new zombie types, and skeleton wolves to join the undead hordes and mix it up a little bit.
The craziest in terms of "difficulty" mods we had, was the chance for Bloodmoons with Enhanced Celestials.
Eyes in the darkness is an extremely simple, but effective and easy to deal with horror mob mod.
From the Fog to have some herobrine shennanigans, i'd tweak the config to make him as random as i could and just be at the mercy of RNG if he decided he'd want to fuck with us or not. is from the fog scary? not really, but god do i love this take on herobrine, it's just a nice little well put together mod that i'm glad goes back to the roots of the creepypasta for the most part.
From the Shadows is the closest thing we had that added any mobs that do ridiculous damage, but once you were armored up, you could take them on pretty simply: the nehemoth, a large demon-like mob that sometimes spawned in big caves underground. i think if i were to do another horror pack again, i'd probably drop this one, but they were definitely a cool mob and had a lot of cool moments with them.
Hostile Mobs and Girls is a mod that, i couldn't see myself using normally, i heavily scrubbed the config to disable most of the mobs from this mod, mainly because it had a couple of really good ones that fit the theme of horror, and once you remove the mobs that don't fit, the remaining mobs left are usually rare spawns and felt mostly balanced. honestly, if i had made this pack today, probably wouldn't have included this one, i was desperate to have atleast one more mod give us a new night mob, after having to replace the john mod, which is another one that i think is pretty good (if you disable the baby johns.), but unfortunately, the johns weren't set up properly, and spawned too much in Alex's caves biomes.
Mob sunscreen applied only to zombies, allowing zombie threats to still be around, and while we were at it, the TZP resource pack to make all the zombies sound scarier and have way more variety in appearance.
speaking of resource pack, we used a halloween resource pack that was very well made, and even without some of the halloween replacements, it tried to stay pretty close to vanilla textures, and just had a very pleasant autumn vibe to it overall.
Nyfs spiders to give spiders the ability to be proper spiders.
Observed, giving us the rare observer mob that focused more on debuffing than being a super strong, super scary monster.
MutantMonsters, which had most of its mobs disabled except the mutant zombie, who was an extremely rare sight in our world.
The same Sanity mod that's included in the modpack in this video, but tweaked a bit.
and finally, in terms of "horror" or mods that help fit the vibe at all, is a mod that i feel like is extremely underlooked when it comes to the horror atmosphere: The Graveyard mod. it adds a good amount of content, mostly via well made structures and blocks, but it also includes a small handful of mobs, only 4 of which are night spawns, and those 4 feel pretty balanced towards a vanilla playstyle.
i'm sure now, there's probably some other good "horror themed" mods that isn't just Dweller mod #34 but the Dweller is unkillable this time, OoOoO that i could add to the pack, i've seen a lot of cool mods that probably would fit the vibe come out lately, and seeing things like the low effort dweller craze, or this modpack effectively just being a challenge-pack, really makes me want to try to update the one i've got, even if it never sees the light of day outside of a select few people....

      @sun9708 4 месяца назад +26

It's a combination of two things (Long comment, TL:DR is that the trend is horror producers not understanding horror):
[Edit: None of this is saying anything about the Modpack publisher- More on the producers of the mods included.]
1 - Something I'd call "Desensitization through Fatigue", but really can just be called "Overexposure"
It's the fact that as you are exposed to the same kind of stimulus over and over you're more than likely going to react to it less and less- That's just how we are. We're used to cheap jumpscare-filled cashgrabs following on the coattails of other producers so naturally they're going to have less efficacy as we grow more and more exposed to them- Anyone who was around during the age of screamers can attest to the first one always getting to them more than the second, third, fifth...
2 - All media is a kind-of game between the product and the consumer; The consumer agrees to "buy-in" to the product's intentions and in return the product will deliver what the consumer wants- Suspension of disbelief, we've all heard of it.
For Horror media, part of that buy-in is that the product will provide the consumer with the feeling that they are in danger and the feeling of tension without actually putting the consumer at any real risk- a kind-of tongue-and-cheek back-and-forth where the consumer willingly subjects themselves to what the product offers, knowing that they are behind the safety of their screen, that they can close the book whenever and be free of it etc.
      Emphasis on "the feeling of".
The main fault here is a misunderstanding of the "buy-in" phase: The person creating content- in this case the mod author(s)- may fail to recognize that Horror is meant to only create the illusion of danger: The more risk there is of the player failing the more that fear and dread is going to turn to boredom and frustration-
"Great, now I have to... (Go get my stuff again; redo this much of the level etc.)" And as soon as the consumer begins to feel that way the horror fades from the product.
Horror, in the context of horror games, wants you to feel dread and anticipation more than anything; that uneasy feeling where you're still not wholly aware of how the game works and, as a result, has you asking questions like
"What's going to happen when (the monster gets me, when I run out of resources etc.)" It naturally has your mind fill in the blanks, and your mind will always be capable of creating a more terrifying scenario than the developers of any given game-
in other words: Horror is entirely dependent on atmosphere and the inherent fear of the unknown. In a game that sense of horror dies immediately when
"What happens when I fail?" is easily answered with "There's a loud sound and a png/gif flashes on the screen and then it's game over."

And I totally agree that you shouldn’t keep trying to drain that other niche dry. The thing that made your vid special is how dispassionate you were about something that was trying too hard to get some kind of rise out of you, and you didn’t get obnoxious or belligerent about it either, keeping a perfect level headed balance. I wouldn't say From the Fog was trying too hard to get a rise out of him, both he and the creator of the mod said that it's not really even intended to be scary, it's just meant to harkon back to the old Herobrine mythos and part of the feeling it gave some players. Not necessarily full on fear, more just like weird happenings in the world and sightings.
Now, the dweller clones, on the other hand, are different.

The weird gargling sound you heard at 1:29:29 comes from one of the mods in the modpack called Zombie Awareness, a mod that enhances the mob (Specifically the undead ones) AI by making them aware of when blocks are placed and/or broken, light sources (I.E: Torches), and blood scent (Which explains the blood splatters on the ground in parts of the video and why you "creamed" at 1:17:19). The obnoxious gargling is a sound cue that you've alerted a mob to your location.
Zombie Awareness and Enhanced AI (Another mod in the modpack) are probably the main reasons why mobs are as cracked in Fear Nightfall as they are, it's something you can get used to as you progress, but it can get extremely annoying at times. Even if I haven't played the modpack myself, I'm still very iffy about it. It's not RLCraft levels of difficult, but there's a lot of aspects that seem like they'd get really old as you progress through the mod.
I will say though, I'm extremely happy mongoose_artist's Born in Chaos (Yet another mod in the modpack) is getting a lot more attention now; It's a bit of a jankfest (As seen in the wonky generation of the mod's structures at 6:22), but it has a lot of heart put into it for being made by a solo developer, it even has support for daedelus_dev's Better Combat mod!

    • @Hamza2_7272
      @Hamza2_7272 4 месяца назад +9

i think it adds a nice challenge, plus, if you figure out the mod's mechanics through trial and error, you will find out that even if the mobs can dig, they cant actually build, so if you raise your base up by like, 3-4 blocks, the mobs are automatically no longer a threat and creepers will rarely breach you (and even if they do, just set up a few spikes around the perimeter to discourage creepers, thats not that hard)
zombie awareness can get kind of annoying with the ''sound'' because it plays a lot but apart from that i like the challenge, plus, without any kind of difficulty or things to do, horror mods just get boring, i've made a few modpacks based around horror and i've found that if you dont add 1-3 progression mods, it gets super stale and boring because you have nothing to occupy yourself with and thus no reward/incentive to actually engage with any of the spooky stuff
also yeah, born in chaos is absolutely sick, love that mod

@@MsMoonDragoon oh i wasnt referring to tedium being a challenge. i personally quite enjoy the challenge of making your base suited around adapting to the world (and tbh, any mod where you die repeatedly and literally cannot recover your items will always get frustrating). it also really depends on your luck, if you can get a good seed and can get a good start, you wont struggle as much and it can actually be really fun. my original comment was four months ago and since then i've played a decent amount with fear nightfall and i'm really trying to get a hardcore world where i've made progress (still working on that though lol). though i will admit that my previous statement of ''literally just build your house up four blocks and no one can reach you'' makes the game quite unfun. since then you dont get to engage with any of the features and your basically just playing vanilla mc
another big big thing though is the caves, you basically cant venture in caves for such a long time because you'll almost certainly die or being out at nighttime. which i think is quite boring since you cant go outside nor go mining at nighttime. so you literally just have to find something to pass the time with
i def get your point about tedium, mods like the one who watches, man from the fog, corpse stalker, etc etc are literally designed to just kill you if you encounter them with almost no chance of living, which is just boring and tedious imo

the sanity mod frustrates me to no end cuz its SO clearly based on the sanity mechanic in dont starve but its executed so poorly... they take the effect that only appears when youre fully insane and apply it whenever you lose sanity?? which sucks for minecraft imo because its not made to have a bunch of effects taking up your screen like that every time one of your stats changes its just annoying. and when you do go insane they put a bunch of text on the screen?????? which again only serves to be annoying? the things that make you gain or lose sanity are either unfair, niche as hell, or just dont make sense? why would i gain sanity from walking on a carpet? why would i LOSE sanity from hurting animals when its one of the most reliable food sources? a lot of the gain/lose mechanics are ripped straight from dont starve but mostly from character specific things (gaining sanity from campfires is likely taken from willow gaining sanity from being near fire, losing sanity when getting hurt is taken from walter, trampling farmlands might reference wormwood losing sanity from cutting trees?) or changed (instead of picking flowers you have to pot them now which takes one of the easiest ways to gain sanity and makes it much more difficult). overall i just dont see how it makes sense.

I just stumbled across your channel a few hours ago and even if your primary content is not Minecraft, you made me wanna start playing these kind of modpacks with my friends, they look interesting and challenging. Your content is great and I'm looking forward to what you make next, keep it up!

Unironically, I would be interested in seeing this become a video on your channel. Like, don't feel forced to make content you don't wanna make, but this video was very entertaining, and I am morbidly curious to see more of this pack.

I’d recommend turning the brightness on the videos up a tiny bit mostly at night but that could just be a me problem/modpack problem :P dope video

Damn, that’s the first Minecraft letsplay I’ve watched in ages… A decade actually, huh
Your videos have really good vibe, like it’s great times of old Minecraft again
Longest video I watched in a while, too, and damn I was invested
You’re really talented in making chill content, like a grasp of fresh air

I found you through your minecraft horror stuff and it is all I have watched of yours. But I think you should do whatever makes you happy. If you're not looking to become a minecraft youtuber, then don't force yourself to. I enjoy your blunt personality when it comes to commenting on these horror mods and personally I'd enjoy seeing you play more of this kind of thing, but again if you don't really enjoy it, then that's your choice. Take care!!

i initially found your channel because of minecraft ofc, but what was most entertaining was how chill u are, very reminiscent of older lets play era but with a little more editing so it doesnt get stale. i dont mind if u stray away from minecraft but i'd hope u keep doing more general horror stuff every now and then, it compliments very well with ur nonchalant attitude lol

I love this video so much I rewatch it all the time with my friends it's awesome. You got me into Fear Nightfall and because of this video I've been playing it sooo much recently. If you ever do a part 2 (which would be AWESOME but it's ok if not), here are some tips I learned through my playthrough:
    - Cover your base in at least 3 layers of cobblestone (it shields you from creeper aggro) and ON TOP OF THAT lay out 3 layers of spikes on the floor surrounding your base. That prevents zombies from mining in during Miner Moons or if they spawn with pickaxes (which sometimes happens).
    - Carry spare campfires with you to regen sanity if needed. Being at too low sanity (like what happened at 1:08:18) spawns mobs that are Very overpowered like the Rotting Stalker.
    - Live in a village. Trust me as soon as you find a village, everything just gets easier. There's sturdy structures everywhere, it's already lit, AND you can trade with clerics to get ender pearls.
    - Farm bamboo, like plant as much as possible so you have enough for a ludicrous amount of spikes.
    - Farm wheat also. For some reason, cooked meat takes forever to eat- so in combat, bread is a MUCH better food source.
But that's pretty much it. I love this video. I love how you approach horror mods in such a down-played way. You're just the perfect guy for minecraft horror. Do more, or don't, only if you want. But I personally love this. ok thank you for reading my comment.

I really like your stuff because of how genuine and off the cuff you are. it all feels very relaxed as opposed to really forced like, in my opinion, forge labs. which I greatly appreciate.
Also I don't know what mod is doing it, I think zombie awareness? but that sound the zombies keep making is absolutely horrid

Bro this could be a really good series to start. your in that same boat as me where my friends are very easily scared but I’ve experienced so many horror movies and games that I’ve become very desensitized to it so it’s really hard to enjoy a scary game or movie because it’s always “ I’ve seen that before” but this could be challenge series to find the scariest pack. The big pull is the watch a young man like yourself go on the quest conquer fear. People love to see it.

I think the best part of these minecraft videos is how chill they are. You just go around exploring the world trying to mind these inconveniences. And you just kinda talk in these videos. Not trying to be goofy for the sake of entertainment or anything. Just being very honest and chill. This video has a nice chill vibe.
