It feels like you're treating Herobrine like an old friend you haven't seen. As if he is Minecraft's Nostalgia, a relic of the past that you knew, at a younger age. It is refreshing yet nice to see that. :)

Fun fact: he actually watches quite frequently while invisible. I copied everything from my 2B instance to the new one for this mod, which included my hacked client, wurst, which lets me see invisible entities. A player shaped entity on multiple occasions showed up, didn’t move, and then vansihed. I also noticed the entity didn’t appear on radar, or tracers.
I’ve seen many playthroughs of into the fog and I’ve played if myself. This herobrine seems kinda thick. Running into walls, running around fields and being infatuated with obsidian
One thing I would suggest doing to make it a bit scarier is to set the sighting chance to "rare". I've found that when doing so, you seem to forget about it, until you hear running footsteps behind you or something. I'm using a world where I have ModernBeta and a few resource packs to make the modern game feel more like Beta, and when you keep the fog setting really low like 2 chunks or so, you don't see Herobrine very often and end up getting spooked by it's other tricks such as ominous signs and footsteps. It makes it much creepier in my opinion.
This absolutely sounds like it would enhance it so much. I definitely put the sighting chance to common after not seeing him for around 40 minutes and I totally get how that lessens it too. My only worry with the scarce sighting is that after over 70 days on my world he’s only placed one sign, has never mined around me, hasn’t built/mined any structure or tunnel. He’s pretty much only physically shown up, and if that became so rare I feel I would be more excited about him doing something that I forget about it being creepy/scary, but that’s just me.
Minecraft solo used to have a very eerie feeling which this mod has managed to replicate in modern Mc. I recently started a world with buddies that was Retro mc themed; old textures, crazy world gen, darkner nights and harder mobs etc. I included from the fog and didn’t tell em about it. He can catch you off guard at times, even for the people that new he was there. But the rest of them had very ‘non-youtuber’ reactions. “Oh shit was that Herobrine? Damn bro.” It was never meant to be scary, just off. Reminiscent of how old minecraft felt off when we were younger.
@@HalTheBotCos it doesn't have the same quality anymore, plus I also wanted to make the game harder with mods, most of my friends likely would've checked out if we were playing a more 'basic' version of the game.
Its deadass only scary when you forget its there or dont know it. I didn't know that the mod pack affects my dogs behavior so it unnerved me when it just growled nonstop for a couple of minutes. Not scary. But eerie. Like a glitch that just gives a weird feeling
Poor guy Herobrine is just interested in what you're doing but is too awkward to directly approach you, so he just looks over your shoulder and runs away when you look at him.
honestly one of the reasons i like from the fog it's not a scary mod, it's like seeing an old friend is the best way to describe it, somehow making minecraft not lonely when you're playing single player
I feel like many streamers ruin the original intention by pairing From the Fog with End of Herobrine. Herobrine was not the Satan of Minecraft, but instead, just a weird entity/distant friend that checked on you occasionally.
The thing that originally made Herobrine scary was the mystery behind him, you weren't sure if he was in your game, silently watching you, or if it was just in your mind. When you download a mod to add Herobrine, you know for a fact that he will be there at some point, and as a result you spend your entire game expecting him. That makes the moments when he does appear much less scary. Also just the fact that those of us who grew up with Herobrine are older now, so a lot of us are realising that 'Steve with white eyes' isn't actually that scary, we were just stupid children.
6:34 the fact that herobrine was having a good time with the fishes until you came and spotted him. the moment you turn around he’s there like: “you saw nothing buddy.”
I always found Herobrine to be pretty funny at times with my experience with the mod. Like I'd encounter something really cool in a modpack like a amethyst geode and I'm just like "My man! This is cool right?" and take a picture. LOL
16:04 is the funniest thing. Just silent confusion and then a barely audible “What did I do??” Love the socially awkward Herobrine that likes rare rocks and frolicking too
i think from the fog works in a paranoia kinda way, though it does grow less paranoia inducing over time. for example, in the mod/datapack settings you can set things that herobrine can do, set fire to blocks, break torches/turn them into redstone ones, etc. stuff like that can really help to make a player paranoid(though of course this kind of thing doesnt affect everyone that way). i think if you want it to be really scary you could pair it with a few other mods that mesh well with the paranoia stuff that this mod can cause
@@awfulroffle there was one that i found that spawned player-mobs in the distance that crouch spam/punch the air at you that kinda fit with from the fogs whole thing
Not sure if others have said this but from what I've seen when it comes to minecraft horror is that they have other mods like the Midnight Lurker, Cave Dweller, the John Mod, or the Man From The Fog mods for examples so their focus isn't just on herobrine it's focused on other beings that could kill you so when he does appear it's more jarring cause your so focused on these other monsters that he's more surprising so to speak
Right at the start so I have no idea if you talk about this, but one of the big things that breaks this mod for me is how he tends to be really up close and personal, not watching afar. His presence is too in-your-face, instead of hidden in the background like in all of those copypastas and fake screenshots. It shows him off too much, too noticeably.
I was just flat out laughing so hard when you went into third person and herobrine was just chilling there like a homie what a rad individual thanks herobrine
Herobrine showing up several times while you're mining obsidian reminded me of my encounters with him. I was just trying to set up my bone farm and multiple times I heard (or found) signs of haunting. I decided that he REALLY just wanted some bones and he was so excited that I was making a farm. Either that or he enjoys playing with rocks. That is like the one spot I've encountered him the most, so it could be both. I love that this mod makes Herobrine into just some dude that checks in on you every now and then
I know it's not a "horror" mod, but this shit genuinely freaks me out when I'm just doing casual modded survival or even creative with my friends, but that's probably just because I'm paranoid and I get startled easily... though other mods and video games/movies with jumpscares don't get me at all
This mod is not scary, I believe that the purpose of this mod is to bring that discomfort that we feel when playing alone in Minecraft. That's why this mod is best played in singleplayer, it has such a weird vibe. I know that herobrine won't attack me, but I still don't feel comfortable with the idea that he could show up at any time somewhere. And thas why I prefer this mod than the dwellers, that strange vibes is really unnerving and I love it! I really really love this mod, I never feel so uncomfortable while mining in my life lmfao
The Dwellers work as a cheap/in-your-face scare that is scary the first time, but they quickly become annoying and disruptive towards gameplay later on. Herobrine does suffer from the annoying factor as well, (Destroying/vandalising builds and forcing the player to stare at him for a few seconds) but it is nowhere near as bad as a stickbug insta-killing you every 10 minutes.
Herobrine in most media: Powerful being with the ability to kill you instantly and scare you to death. Herobrine in this video: "We have come for your Obsidian!"
Sometimes I just see him and it isn't scary, but when I'm focused on something and I see him, that's when it's scary. When I played a hardcore world with the mod for the first time, I saw trees without leaves and weird things, but nothing scary. After maybe an hour exploring, I found a nice place to build (bc in my new worlds I usually explore to find a good place to live) and as I was watching the sunset, I put my bed and when I was going to sleep I heard someone run to me, the foosteps were so clear and unexpected that they made me jump and left me with fear, it wasn't like when I play a horror game and I get scared by a jumpscare and just laugh, I closed the game 💀 Other times were when I was building my house and I turn around and he's there. The times that it's scary for me, it's when i don't even think about him, when i'm just playing normal Minecraft, I always wanted a mod that adds herobrine in such an immersive way
From The Fog is such a unique mod.. it's not a normal horror mod that makes you pass out and jump 50 trillion kilometers above the ground but it just adds an aura to the game
This is so funny because I tried this mod today to get back some feeling of fun and fear that I used to have playing this game that I've lost over the years and I can say I was certainly jump scared numerous times but I never played horror games and when I was young I can't even begin to explain how deeply scared I was of herobrine, it's so fun because sometimes I get jump scared and other times I'm like "ah I see ya there bud whatcha up to?" It really brings part of the fun and the atmosphere back into the game that I missed.
My friends and I played with this mod and at first he startled us in the caves just because we weren't used to him and then eventually whenever we saw him we would greet him like he was part of our group. One of my friends even started referring to him as babygirl whenever he appeared on their base 💀💀💀💀💀
This is one of those mods that's best when paired with other, much scarier mods like Cave Dweller, Man From The Fog, Weeping Angels, and a few others. It's one of those supplementary mods, I think. Edit: Herobrine is a slut for obsidian, apparently
man from the fog really isnt scary though, i just waited until he showed up and killed him for the drops. cave dweller is pretty scary since he takes a while to show up and builds up tension by making sounds and stuff.
He is just annoying, and the chase animation looks goofy/silly. A barebones texture on a long and lanky model with a gaping mouth is more funny than scary. @@Solar_Axis
@@Daralexen It's a BLOCK game, if he had a more detailed texture or animation it wouldn't fit with vanilla Minecraft anymore. The fear comes form actually trying to escape him even though he can usually out-run and out-swim you. His jerky, quick movements are designed to make the player momentarily second-guess where he's trying to go and potentially mess up and get caught by him. Not every scary experience needs hyper-realism to be scary
The Warden has a good texture and design, and it is from the same game. The Man's texture is just one solid colour with some shading. The texture is not even complete, and I can still see the placeholder Blockbench textures. There are horror mods with FAR better textures than most streamer bait stick bugs like Man from The Fog and Cave Dweller. the 2023 reboot of the John Mod has detailed textures for the mobs that stay faithful to Jappa's style. As for the fear factor of the Man, I found him very easy to escape/avoid due to the flawed AI. He would often get stuck in the snow, struggle to climb mountains and die on his way to me due to being attacked by another mob. Maybe it varies between players, I am ambivalent. I also never said that every horror experience needs to be hyper-realistic with amazing graphics. In reality, horror that relies on gore and hyperrealism annoys me. One of my favourite horror experiences of 2023 is MyHouse.wad, a custom map for Doom II. It is not scary for an oogeyboogey man that one-shots the player and loves to scream, it is due to the atmosphere of pretending to be like every other copy-and-paste map that is just a replica of the author's home for the original Doom games, and all of the hidden lore. In reality, it is a very complex map with tons of secrets that one would not even know about without a guide. This is all done in Doom II, a game from 1994 that is FAR weaker than modern versions of Minecraft Java which these mods are made for.
12:10 warden A.I. is so stupid i made a personal datapack that doesn't let him find you if you're actually making no noise, beause you know, hiding behind a 100% wall and doing nothing must mean the player is in this exact spot!
My herobrine always spawned to show me directions to some really rare cool loot, like an above ground dungeon and huge ore veins and villages. We were such buddies i built him a room in my crib that i built on some really nice flat land that he showed me.
Your Herobrine is such a bro, he knows mining obsidian is ass, so he keeps you company while playing peek-a-boo. That is what i like about the mod, he makes the monotony a little more interesting. Its also fun seeing something strange ingame and wondering "Is this minecrafts generation being stupid, or did my man do this?"
As a NON-PROGRAMMER who reckons I get the idea of the mod, I spent a lot of my watchtime trying to think of ways to improve on this technically. Totally random spawning sounds right on paper, and it’s not bad, but with some exhaustingly complex dynamic AI you could get something closer to the classic feeling, I think. 8:11 has been pointed out as a good moment. Could he be made to seek out spots where his model would be mostly in cover? Spawns where you need a red clickbait arrow to prove that he was there are ideal. Can he be made to fetch the player’s FOV setting and use that to respond to being stared at and avoid spawning in view? If he spawns next to a wall and decides to run instead of blink away, can he be made to phase into that wall instead of ramming against it for a while and then blinking? Can he be made to react to his shrines? To recognize and behave differently around players’ homes? To notice when he’s seen through glass (and maybe not always do something about it), or notice when the player is in combat (and be less intrusive until it’s settled), or notice when he’s in a cave? Herobrine isn’t supposed to make you scream, but I don’t think he’s meant to be a weird little buddy either. There’s got to be a way to reach the middle.
It'd definitely be possible to make the mod react to gold blocks, Netherrack, and mossy cobble in close vicinity to eachother and count it as a "shrine". Could probably do something similar for player homes though I don't know how it'd differentiate between a player home and a villager house. As for him phasing through walls, better yet, have him mine a tunnel until he's out of sight. Maybe even artificially lengthen it to be way longer than it should be in the time it takes the player to get over there.
If you turn on debug mode you can see that the mod (datapack) actually does detect when you’re looking at him, there’s config options to do with looking through glass, and shrines do actually work, there’s even config options to add lightning and/or Herobrine showing up when you light it, there’s also a config option to let him burn down your base, too, but I’m not sure how the base detection works.
This seems good in theory, but I'm not sure it would accomplish your end goal of a middle ground. Herorbrine aside from a few minor obnoxious things does so little that he is just behaving like a shy kid that once you get accustomed to what he does you adapt to him and play in a way where he doesn't hurt you. That is how he has always behaved in lore.
I love videos that have the take on being friendly with Herobrine. He doesn’t do much, he’s just chilling with you. There aren’t many videos with this concept but I’m looking
2:52 this is SO FUNNY, I literally have tears in my eyes. the nonchalant nature of friend A and the not 1 but like 4 appearances right after another. im dead bro, BAM BAM BAM BAM *_CAVE NOISE_* shaking you violently "ARE YOU SCARED YET! ARE YOU SCARED YET!" llmaooooo
I love smaller channels for this reason, they have genuine reactions and they dont react like its the first time theve ever seen a png of a poorly modeled 'jumpscare' show up on their screen and play loud sounds. It feels so real and I love it. Its so refreshing to see this instead of, lets use calvin's from the fog series. He screams even after seeing herobrine for the 80th time just to have some reaction.
I had a similar experience as you did with the obsidian, where at one point he would pretty much just show up every time you turned around Except I had Optifine, and for some reason he creates a glow around him in the same way that you would when holding a torch, so it was pretty easy to tell when he was there
The thing is, everybody else’s videos still make me jump (probably cause of the loud ass audio stingers when he shows up) but I just don’t jump on my own for some reason
@@Friend_AJust a thought, but maybe its because you expect it to happen. The feeling if not knowing whats going to happen is what gets me with the mod. Not herobrine. Like getting an achievement the mod pack gives you and not knowing why gave me legit chills. Like the achievement that implies he was directly behind you and you didnt notice him.
I really wish I knew how modding worked. Ive always wanted to make an actual Herobrine mod that stayed subtle. I want to make sure Herobrine does not appear too close to the player, no jumpscares, no lame teleporting. I wanna capture that feeling of G-Man sightings from Half-Life or something.

@@Friend_AThe sighting chance only affects when you actually see him. And I’m pretty sure that at least most of the structures are pre-generated.
Yeah but counter argument, him showing up like ten times in a row when he’s mining obsidian is really funny lol
That + the FOV messes up Herobrine's sight recognition real hard. A lower FOV + rare chance is top tier.

“Oh shit was that Herobrine? honestly one of the reasons i like from the fog
it's not a scary mod, it's like seeing an old friend is the best way to describe it, somehow making minecraft not lonely when you're playing single player
I feel like many streamers ruin the original intention by pairing From the Fog with End of Herobrine. Herobrine was not the Satan of Minecraft, but instead, just a weird entity/distant friend that checked on you occasionally.
there are two types of youtubers
1: *Intense screaming*
2: "Yo wassup bro"
The thing that originally made Herobrine scary was the mystery behind him, you weren't sure if he was in your game, silently watching you, or if it was just in your mind. When you download a mod to add Herobrine, you know for a fact that he will be there at some point, and as a result you spend your entire game expecting him. That makes the moments when he does appear much less scary.
Also just the fact that those of us who grew up with Herobrine are older now, so a lot of us are realising that 'Steve with white eyes' isn't actually that scary, we were just stupid children.

i think from the fog works in a paranoia kinda way, though it does grow less paranoia inducing over time. for example, in the mod/datapack settings you can set things that herobrine can do, set fire to blocks, break torches/turn them into redstone ones, etc. stuff like that can really help to make a player paranoid(though of course this kind of thing doesnt affect everyone that way). i think if you want it to be really scary you could pair it with a few other mods that mesh well with the paranoia stuff that this mod can cause

Not to mention the built-on stress the other monsters bring which also makes it worse
Lurker-types are just annoying and goofy imo
i like to visit my friend in order to watch his toes move frantically in order to try and get rid of the massive winds i produce by excramenting
You can disable him creeping up on you so he can only watch afar
I was just flat out laughing so hard when you went into third person and herobrine was just chilling there like a homie what a rad individual thanks herobrine
Herobrine showing up several times while you're mining obsidian reminded me of my encounters with him. I was just trying to set up my bone farm and multiple times I heard (or found) signs of haunting. I decided that he REALLY just wanted some bones and he was so excited that I was making a farm. Either that or he enjoys playing with rocks. That is like the one spot I've encountered him the most, so it could be both.
I love that this mod makes Herobrine into just some dude that checks in on you every now and then
I love how the response to anything is immediately "Ayo dap me up-"
I know it's not a "horror" mod, but this shit genuinely freaks me out when I'm just doing casual modded survival or even creative with my friends, but that's probably just because I'm paranoid and I get startled easily... though other mods and video games/movies with jumpscares don't get me at all
This mod is not scary, I believe that the purpose of this mod is to bring that discomfort that we feel when playing alone in Minecraft.
I really really love this mod,
I never feel so uncomfortable while mining in my life lmfao
The Dwellers work as a cheap/in-your-face scare that is scary the first time, but they quickly become annoying and disruptive towards gameplay later on. Herobrine does suffer from the annoying factor as well, (Destroying/vandalising builds and forcing the player to stare at him for a few seconds) but it is nowhere near as bad as a stickbug insta-killing you every 10 minutes.

Sometimes I just see him and it isn't scary, but when I'm focused on something and I see him, that's when it's scary.
When I played a hardcore world with the mod for the first time, I saw trees without leaves and weird things, but nothing scary. After maybe an hour exploring, I found a nice place to build (bc in my new worlds I usually explore to find a good place to live) and as I was watching the sunset, I put my bed and when I was going to sleep I heard someone run to me, the foosteps were so clear and unexpected that they made me jump and left me with fear, it wasn't like when I play a horror game and I get scared by a jumpscare and just laugh, I closed the game 💀
Other times were when I was building my house and I turn around and he's there.
The times that it's scary for me, it's when i don't even think about him, when i'm just playing normal Minecraft, I always wanted a mod that adds herobrine in such an immersive way
herobrine running away into the the bamboo was genuinely almost cute. he's like "OH NO i gotta run !!!!!"

You talk to hero brian like hes a shy kid and you're a supportive dad and it kills me
As a NON-PROGRAMMER who reckons I get the idea of the mod, I spent a lot of my watchtime trying to think of ways to improve on this technically.
