  • Here's a quick comparison for those curious about these Boogies. I was going for that early Petrucci tone and set both amps as close as I could. No plugins, compressors or any post EQ. I hope this helps anyone looking into purchasing these awesome amps! Cheers!

    I decided to listen to this with my eyes closed. Could not tell when the amps changed even once. Was listening on high quality. I'd say they are close enough not to matter. Very good work.

      Yup people don’t really want to come to terms with how much RUclips audio compression makes most of these demos ultimately pointless. The only way to really know how an amp sounds is to go play one.

    I will solve a lot of guessing here:
    Any tonal difference between the two are just merely quality parts in each other.
    Basically both the mark v iic+ mod and the jp2c as well as the triaxis were based off a Mark iic+ NON GEQ head, so basically the 3 versions are the same circuit wise.
    Thats why when ppl compared a mark v iic+ to a Mark iic+(HRG head) for example they sounded different because of the GeQ difference between the two iic+ models.
    Btw getting anyone of them will be heaven, they nail any tone you will want: metallica, dream theater, santana etc and etc.

    In this instance with the way their set the JP2C has a better cut but the V could be a simple EQ tweak from being the same. The character of the mids and low end is super close. What I like is my V will get this sound but then amazing edge of breakup and dirty clean, and thick MK 1 tones as well.I think if you live with this sound the JP is the way to go but I prefer the versatility in the V over a few % difference in these tones.

    Prefer the JP-2C. The Mark V seems to have a bit of a nasal, slightly muddy quality to it, while the JP-2C sounds fuller and clearer. That being said, they sound super close to each other. What a lot of people don't realize is that the speaker cab is responsible for at least 50% of your tone. So any 2 high gain heads going into the same cab will sound similar, especially when they are designed to put out the same kind of tone in the first place, as with the JP-2C and the Mark V's IIc+ mode.

    • @stevecarlsson8953
      @stevecarlsson8953 8 лет назад +9

      No muddiness in Mark V sound, the main difference is that JP-2c is centered in hi-mids and Mark V is stronger in lo-mids, which makes it better for metal. In case you want refined and clearer sound try Fryette Ultralead it will cut better than both in the mix, and every note will stay clean even at full gain.
      Both amps are great, but too much overpriced for mass produced piece of gear.

    Great video comparison!
    I own both and am keeping both. Don't worry about overlap, you can easily set them up such that every channel on both amps sound completely different.
    If you are trying to decide which one to get if you are a high gain and/or lead centric player get the JP-2C. If you really love the Mark V tweed mode and crunch mode, get the Mark V.
    I struggled for months getting a great channel 3 sound out of the Mark V but was suggested the following and really love it with extreme mode:
    - Gain: 3
    - Master: 11:30
    - Presence: around 10-ish
    - Treble: 11
    - Mid: 11
    - Bass: 12
    - Mode: Normal or Bright, just depends
    Sliders:
    80HZ just below top line
    240HZ just above middle line
    750HZ between middle and bottom line
    220HZ right at middle line
    660HZ just above middle line
    I use vintage ElectroVoice Mesa cabs and Gibson guitars with stock humbucker and p90 pickups.

    The main difference (to me) can be heard at 2:34 vs 2:44. Only 2c+ can deliver that much bite to the individual notes of a chord. The Mark V still does it well, it's a boogie thing. But the pinnacle of the "percussive attack" as the folks at mesa would say is the 2c+.

    Last week I 'schlepped' down to my local Mesa Engineering dealer to add another amp to my own Mesa 'herd' and took a gander at the Mark V. After a brief dialogue with the salesperson, I was made aware of a NOS 'Royal Atlantic' RA-100 head that was in stock. I always do my homework and research amps that interest me as I like to be ahead of the curve on product knowledge. This Mesa dealership was flogging the RA-100 for 66% off the MSRP and threw in a new set of Mesa El-34's to 'sweeten the pie'. So I ended up going home with the Royal Atlantic. Now my only concern is that Mesa continues to manufacture the Mark V as those amps are a definite 'staple' of the Mesa sound. None the less, I sure enjoy my Mesa amps, and my new addition is no exception. Cheers!

    I personally own the Mark V (and it's killer) in this video I can definitely hear the JP sounds a little fuller and more stereo sounding than the Mark V. That's obviously not something I would sell my Mark V (with it's MANY other options) for a JP series.. Many more options with the Mark V for sure for a studio player, but for a gigging musician the JP might be a nice option.

  • @Swampster70

    If you're stood in front of the two amps, the JP2C will have a bit more punch than the Mark V in 2C+ mode just because of the mammoth transformer.
    If you're recording, you may not notice the difference. If you're playing live and have to mic the amp, the audience wont notice the difference unless the difference for you makes you play differently.
    When I played the JP2C I could tell that the "Chug Gods" were strong with this amp. It's as good as the few 2C+ amps that I've heard and if you crank the gain and add some bass (normally with Mesa Mark amps you reduce the bass when adding gain) you can get a heavy Mark IV sound. I like that big, wide sound.

  • @jamesdaigle1543

    To my ears the Mark V sounds just a smidgeon darker and louder, but the difference is very subtle, about on par with variance between different JP2C’s. They both have that sound. I’d like to see if a Mark IV can mimic a JP2C and/or Visa Versa.

    I was looking through the comments to see what other people thought and honestly forgot you were switching amps. They sound so similar. I definitely noticed a difference in the isolated tracks and I preferred the jp a little, but the mark V is way more versatile. I guess it doesn’t really matter which one I like more though cause I can’t afford either 😔

    Good work.
    I own a mark v combo. Not yet played it since I got it.
    But the Jp2c sounds better. It’s like you can feel more movement from the speaker cone. If that makes any sense.
    It’s subtle but it is there.

    Great comparison! Question for you, from what I read in the description it looks like you’re plugged straight into the front of the amp? No boost whatsoever? I have both the TC-100 and the Badlander. I like a TIGHT gain exactly like what you’ve dialled in for this video. Both my Mesas sound sweet but I do boost... I have my gain set at a little past noon and run the MB Grid Slammer in front just for that little bit extra tightness. I haven’t played through a Mark V but I’ve been thinking about buying one. This demo may have tipped the scales in favour. Just gotta know if there was a boost there?

    • @NervousFlashlights
      @NervousFlashlights  2 года назад

      No boost being used at all. I don't really use a boost for any Mark series amp. You can sort of think of the eq knobs as a sort of boost because they are pre gain. After you set the knobs (most people cut some bass) you can work on the graphic eq (bring some more bass frequencies back). The geq is post gain.
      So when you play a Rectifier (I have a Roadster). The eq section is post gain. The reason why people use a boost is to simulate pre gain eq. Most TS style pedals cut some bass.
      I habe a grid slammer too. Underrated pedal imo. I like it over my Maxon and my TS808.
      Happy tone hunting!

    Hi! How did you set up your jp2c to get this tone? Great vid!

    • @NervousFlashlights
      @NervousFlashlights  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks man! For starters don't use too much gain and bass. Ride the bass knob around 9 o'clock, even less. Add mids to taste (On most my guitars I have this around 11 o'clock). Adjust the treble and gain together to find the sweet spot on your rig. Presence I have pushed in and is usually around 2 o'clock. The graphic eq is where you "finalize" your sound. Get a "Classic V" shape going and then chug away on a string and slide the faders until everything sounds full. Watch out for the 2200 fader. That can be really iffy at times depending on your room and cab. And turn up that master! Let the amp open up. Hope this helps! CHEERS!

    • @NervousFlashlights
      @NervousFlashlights  7 лет назад +3

      Yes! I highly recommend the JP2C! I am keeping both the V and the JP2C. I love them for different reasons. I really like the versatility I get with the V. From Pop, Rock, Blues, Metal, and pretty much anything you can throw at it, the V will eat it up. The JP2C however is definitely the "Petrucci tone" in a box. And I feel it is easier to dial in. Plus those two graphic eq's man...

    • @RobertHopkinsArt
      @RobertHopkinsArt 7 лет назад +4

      I am into the idea of "keeping it easy to dial it in and play more guitar" approach. The V seems like it does it all, but many of the users always seem to struggle getting it dialed in, unless you read and understand the 500 page manual. Your video here helps me to make a better, more informed decision. Thanks! The parts you played in this video are both spot on with the originals (maybe a little brighter) and are a better show case of what these amps sound like. Your video is better than JP's and Mesa's videos!

    • @NervousFlashlights
      @NervousFlashlights  7 лет назад +4

      Thanks for the kind words! That is the double edged blade you get with any of the Mark series amps. But boy, when you do get them dialed to your guitar and style of playing. You are set for life. I'm glad I can help you with your purchasing decision.

    • @larrytate1657
      @larrytate1657 7 лет назад +2

      Once you have it for a couple weeks understanding how to dial it is simple,. Talking maybe an extra hour of tweaking experiments over a basic amp. I like that though it makes it interesting and gives a lot of tonal options. Plus it sounded good outta the box too imho and if u want to dive in the back of the manual has recommended settings you can copy onto your head in 20 seconds.

    • @FastRedPonyCar
      @FastRedPonyCar 6 лет назад +1

      I sold my V because I was just endlessly fiddling with it. I felt like all the options and stuff resulted in it being a jack of all trades but master of none. I absolutely LOVED the Mark IV that I had borrowed and played side by side with the V. I spent a couple weeks trying to dial in the V to sound like the IV but never even came close. I played the V at about 8 or 9 shows and while it certainly didn't sound bad, I couldn't find it's identity if that makes any sense.
      With my Nitro or Silver Jubilee, when I plug in, I know EXACTLY what that amp is going to sound like no matter where the knobs are set.
      I've heard and read so much good stuff about the JP2C that I kinda want to pick one up but I can't help but think that I'll be stuck sitting there trying to make it sound like a Mark IV and that I should just buy a IV :/ Like the V, the extra features and creature comforts of the JP2C make it a stronger draw. I'm an idiot...

    Hey mate! what about the sound in the room? I read a lot of people saying that the JP2C or the IV just destroy the V... I don't really buy that, love the recorded hi-gain tones and tightnes out of the V, is there really a big difference in the feel and sound in the room?
    Also, I think the V doesn't have that much "crunchy" thing going on and it's tighter than the others, is this correct? actually I don't like that crunchy sound, the V sounds cleaner in the demos I've seen (for example in petrucci's demo V vs IIC+ I think the V just sounds way better, tighter and cleaner)

    • @NervousFlashlights
      @NervousFlashlights  2 года назад +1

      I wouldn't say any of them destroy the other. I used to have a IV and loved it. I sold it due to the V being more versatile. They are all crunchy in different ways. If you want a more in your face tone get the IV. If you want the most refined one get the V. If you want a "Insta-petrucci" tone get the JP. I gotta stress that you cannot go wrong with any of them.
