I'm subscribed but I still saw the thumbnail and recognized the style from your killer intros viral video that helped me first discover you as a RUclipsr, Aprilynne. At first I wondered if it was that vid I already had seen but then I saw what it was about in the title and was ready to click and watch and knew it would be quality content and it certainly delivered! I also knew how much the you were pouring into this and had seen a lot of community updates from you hyping it up ahead of time!
This is terrific. I'm a graphic designer professionally but since starting a RUclips channel I've found that while my skills do translate to creating thumbnails from a technical perspective, nailing the psychological aspect is a whole different beast.
Girl… because of you… my last first video hit 700 and keeps going. Thank you so much. You deserve to grow big for all the work you put into these videos.
This is hands down the best thumbnail video I have ever seen! Thank you so much for going beyond the classic “use your face, bright colours, and contrast”. You laid everything out in such a beautiful straight forward manner. I went back and updated 4 of my thumbnails and saw immediate growth! Nothing crazy, of course, but I’ll take what I can get. I appreciate you and your research so much.
I just clicked on your page and your thumbnails make me want to watch all of them! I’m here trying to learn too. My thumbnails are not at all pulling in views. I need to work on this for sure.
🔴1 Super IMPORTANT thing that 90% of youtubers make a mistake on is making their title and thumbnail have same wording/tell same message You have 2 opportunities with a thumbnail and title, so there's no point repeating things. Two options: 1. Test different things 2. Have them as an extension of one another Awesome video btw. Probably the best video on RUclips Thumbnails out there!
This is like a “once you learn you can’t unlearn” kinda info. After watching this video my eyes and my brain is just scanning and processing the psychology behind every thumbnail I pass on! Thanks for sharing! This video is a gem ❤
omg clicked on this to see if I could make my thumbnails better and saw the thumb of me and Kelly!!!🤣🤣 I had keep trying diff poses for that thumbnail for like 20 minutes outside in my tank top 😭 HAHA and then we ofc changed the colors of our original jackets!!! hehe thanks for including us!
AHHHH omg girl I love your content!! and that thumbnail was SO good - definitely worth the 20 minutes of freezing haha. also i'm happy to chat any time about thumbnails or anything else!! lmk if you ever want someone to bounce thumbnail ideas off of 💙
This is HANDS DOWN the best video I've seen on RUclips regarding thumbnails. Such high value, and I love your editing style so much! This was definitely worth the wait.
I have watched many videos of how to make a viral thumbnail or video on this platform, and each time I seem to forget what I just watched. This is by far the definitive "How to make a killer youtube thumbnail" video. It breaks down everything into easy to understand points, and she gives a summary chart so nobody has to waste more time taking notes, and more time taking action!
I am 1 Million% confident that I don't need to watch any other video on How to make a Killer Thumbnail after watching this video!!! Truly value-adding research. Amazing!!!
23 minutes in and I can't finish the video because I keep stoping to try and apply the new thing you just blew my mind with! This is so GOOOOOOOOOOOOD! I'll let you know how much of a difference it makes when I apply it to my videos.
Can i just say i have watched ALOT of videos about thumbnails and this is by far the best one by miles. I really appreciate the time and effort you have put into this.
This is amazing - I had basically given up on watching youtuber advice videos recently bc so many of them are just the same regurgitated mr. beast quotes over and over again, with a few notes on confidence and stage presence. However, your videos (this one + the intro one) are genuinely very well crafted advice from someone who clearly is interested in studying youtube. The information is both novel and digestible, and mostly I can see how it actually could apply in various niches, making it far more useful to me. Also, you're completely correct on your thumbnail standing out - that's the exact reason I clicked on the intro video in the first place - the aesthetic vibe of your thumbnail implied that the video would be far more appealing to me than the usual braggadocious vibe of other youtube advice youtubers (who often unfortunately remind me of the phrase 'those who can't do, teach'). I'm really planning on incorporating your advice here and in the intro vid to the best of my ability and seeing what happens.
Wow, thank you so, so much. It's definitely something I was hyper-aware of when I decided to make a channel within this niche: there's a lot of wishy-washy and BS "advice" touted around by self-proclaimed "RUclips gurus", and I didn't want to be anything like them. I'm so glad this video was genuinely helpful to you 💙
As someone who's been posting short-form content on other platforms for a while and only recently moved to RUclips, I found your video extremely useful. Thank you!
this might literally the best RUclips video ever made in history. Honestly this video needs to be in a museum. You took me thru almost a story of myself by making me take each step that I made while creating my thumbnail. Masterpiece
Very informative . Unfortunately, another RUclipsr's video came out today where it was revealed the RUclipsr Oscar Owen stole this video and another one of your videos :(
This is the single best video on youtube growth and thumbnails I have ever seen! The detail, the research, the clarity, the THUMBNAIL! Its all there. Thank you so much for this
In a flood of “experts” making dozens of videos finding new ways to say “work on titles and thumbnails” without giving any concrete ways to do that, this is a truly remarkable tool. I run a sketch comedy channel and have I personally would love any kind of follow up or resources focusing on narrative thumbnails as opposed to the more common gaming/video essay/stunt videos. I find other than taking the Ryan George approach of giving a visual sample of a joke, it can be a bit daunting
Sometimes I get so exhausted trying to make every single video and thumbnail a total banger 😂 It’s also worth mentioning that sometimes some objectively terrible thumbnails still garner hundreds of thousands of views just because the youtuber is well known and well liked by their audience. You addressed this in the video! Awesome job ❤
Oh and also! You’re spot on about the $$$$ on the thumbnail. I often post grocery hauls and definitely get more clicks when I include prices in the title and thumbnail
Girl I feel you! I really tried to outdo my last viral video with an absolute banger. You best believe my next video is going to be something that's much more chill haha. Not every video needs to be a banger, and that's okay
Thanks for putting all this information together! I've seen bits and pieces of this watching those same interviews and videos, but never took the time to really map it out and examine it in such detail. Maybe it was me being stubborn about my "style" haha. Unlike other videos I've seen, really appreciate how you also took us into your process, the use of the figma boards, the document of notes, the pdf guide, everything just shows that you've not only extracted powerful insights, but you've structured it all into a very MECE framework that also relates to information we already know (i.e. psychology, colors), before putting it together into an excellent and engaging video. Keep it up!
That was so juicy! Each second is soaked in all the hard work you did and it shows. I can't wait for the next videos - I'd especially love to see more about your editing/designing process, branding and storytelling in video making. Keep up with the amazing work
Yay you’re back!! I can’t even imagine how much TIME and EFFORT it took into researching and then putting this knowledge into an easily digestible video for us!! Thank you for this!!

Great video! April. Yes, over 50% goes into people chances to click on our videos and yet we are not spending even a 5% on the thumbnail. From now on I will spend more time on thumbnail design. Thank you!
I can’t thank you enough for how much effort you’ve been putting into these videos. The amount of research and investigation you do, and then give all this information for free is amazing. I’m going to use your information as a master class moving forward with my videos! Thanks so much for helping us all grow and improve our channels.
This is hands down the best thumbnail strategy video I've ever seen,. Your pacing and editing is amazing, you're going to dominate this niche within the next year! Congratulations
Wow I think the quality of your videos is on par with the top youtubers. So much valuable information with no time wasting and the editing is amazing and is able to keep me engaged throughout!

Hi Aprilynne, this wasn't just a masterclass in thumbnail design, but also editing and research. So much went into this video and we applaud you for it!
Wow! I was blown away by the amount of information you provided in this video. I took four pages of notes (old habits from college and grad school never die), and I will start putting this newfound knowledge to work right away. The next stop will be your video on killer intros.
I must say that your two videos about titles & thumbnails and intros are truly amazing! So much value. :) Thanks for taking all the time researching and constructing a system around these topics!
This is genuinely one of the BEST videos I have ever watched on RUclips! Will definitely be rewatching and rewatching! You go into SO much depth in this video, and I think we all really appreciate you sharing your knowledge with the world in such an easy-to-understand way :) Seriously, thank you so much!
Ahhhh thank you so much Stella! You were such a crucial part of this video - helping me distill all of my notes into what was actually interesting & necessary, helping finalize my script, and even talking me through my pre-filming nerves. I truly couldn't have done it without you 💙
I really think you will be a great youtuber bc you are genuinely likable and your editing is amazing. Once you do it more you will be able to get videos out more frequently. You posting in community updating us made me so curious! Well done hon! I'll definitely be following you! Well done!
Honestly Community Posts are so underrated! I love using them as a way to engage. And for sure, I'll definitely upload with more frequency in the future haha
@@AprilynneAlter I def didn't mean to criticize your frequency/posting my dear! I just meant to say I love your videos and look forward to them. Im an Economics and Poly Sci/law teacher planning to start an Econ/Finance channel or a True Crime channel. Im also a mom/wife etc so Just had to make it to the end of the semester. I really look forward to your videos. Keep up the great work!
this series is literally the best series ever. I've been on youtube since 2011 and failed with multiple channels. Now I have one that finally reached 19K subs but engagement just isn't there and I am now in a different phase of life. So I decided to start over with this channel. Your tips are truly amazing
Aprillynne, you have hit every important point in this issue which is INVALUABLE to all of us (and I would say just about every creator on youtube hahaha: we are ALL struggling with thumbnails 😂) So many thanks! Your videos never disappoint and I am looking forward to your next one about video ideas. btw hahaha, I love that you design your thumbnails in Figma. Glad to know I am not the only one who doesnt just use Figma for UX/ UI etc. (Figma is awesome for lots of stuff, even if I couldn't survive without Photoshop, Figma has my heart)
Thank you so much! I stumbled across this video and then watched your intro video. After implementing these strategies, The next video I posted has got more than 6k views in less than 24 hours and 50+ subscribers.
Thanks for the masterclass thumbnail design! Great video as always! I can really see that you put a lot of work in this video and the wait was worth it!
I can’t believe this is available for free, thank you SO MUCH for this amazing class. I realized I was not paying attention to my thumbnails AT ALL. I’m not a designer but I’ll word hard with the tools I have to become better and better everyday. Thank you !
This is truly the BEST video I have ever seen on this topic! Without unnecessary information, everything is clear to the point! Every 2 seconds I had to open the notes again and again to record new information from you! Now I’m sitting and thinking about all the information you listed, and I’m thinking how I didn’t think about at least 1 of these points on my own! After all, it really does work! Let me give you an example: I recently saw you for the first time a week ago, I decided to click on the video because I was interested in this topic. I watched it and liked it, but didn’t subscribe. Today I went to RUclips, saw your video, and apparently, my brain automatically considered you something familiar, safe, that I immediately clicked on the video, although, to be honest, I didn’t even pay attention to your preview (except for your face!). Now I'm definitely subscribing! Thanks a lot!!
I finally got a chance to watch this and I loved it! I like that so much of this is practical and applicable. I'd love to chat about a future collab if you're interested! -Nathan
I've heard Ali Abdaal say "When someone watches your video, they should go like 'I can't believe this is available for free on the internet. This is gold!'" and that was exactly my reaction to your video. Thanks for this!
Excellent. One of the best explanations of what thumbnails are, and how to make them work for your channel. Clear, concise, and filled with top notch information. A lot of these concepts I've learned over the last 50+ years in other areas such as publishing, art and design, creating training videos, and teaching adults, etc. but I never thought of how to apply them to RUclips thumbnails. THANK YOU!
There are a lot of RUclips videos about thumbnail making, but I finally found the one that actually explains everything from start to finish, while making sense. Thanks a lot.
This is FANTASTIC. So many RUclips theory videos say the same old crap over and over. This actually was full of really useful information. Thanks so much,
I don't think I've ever learned more from a RUclips video before than I did from this one. The PDF addition was the cherry on top! Thank you so much for making this and I'm sure you'll make it far in the industry!
This is so helpful, nice that you made it three weeks ago, I'm having a paradigm shift about thumbnails this morning...finally! I just didn't get it before....needed an epiphany-like moment....thanks for being a part of that!
Honestly… this is the best tutorial I have seen yet on thumbnails! You’re doing an incredible job. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into this. Now let’s see if I can improve my thumbnails 😆
This was an exceptionally made video, full of usable information and no real fluff. The quality was so good that I felt like this is a video that would have been a lesson in a course. Well done! You got yourself a new subscriber, something I rarely do these days.
What blew my mind and got me excited to watch was... you showed that panning image of the massive amount of content you reviewed, the amount of days dedicated to watching it, and the number of pages of notes. Like... how would i ever match that myself in research.
This is genuinely the best video I have watched on thumbnails! Thank you for the effort you have put into this, I look forward to bringing your channel!
I've seen so many thumbnail videos but this is the first that goes beyond "it's really important, create curiosity, and stand out" which are all very true but it's so helpful to actually be told HOW! The infographic at the end was also extremely valuable, and I can't say how much I appreciate it!!
Ok you can literally feel the research every second of the video. This feels like benchmarking done by professional consulting firms or media companies. SO helpful and I agree - can't believe it's free lol you deserve every like!
I don't think I can ever watch your video without a pen and paper in hand. They are so insightful. As a new youtuber each of your videos are so informative and easy to understand. I have learnt so much from them. Thank you April.
The RUclips gods BLESSED me with this video. I expected I'd have to see a couple of videos on thumbnails to make mine better but nope! You ate and there are no leftovers! One thing I would like to point out for new RUclipsrs like me (2 videos uploaded - not on this account) is that it's also ok to improve just for the sake of improving, without an output goal like going viral or closely monitoring the metrics! It's more rewarding when it's about learning a new skill, and Aprilynne seems like a great teacher!
Whatever you’re doing is working because I clicked on your video and this is the first time I’ve ever restarted a video from the beginning after finishing it. Thank you so much for this information and your art 🩷
I am a thumbnail designer, and a few days ago, I was confused after seeing different types of thumbnails. I wondered about the factors that make a good thumbnail. You made it super easy to understand. Thanks.

Ahhhh thank you so much Stella! You were such a crucial part of this video - helping me distill all of my notes into what was actually interesting & necessary, helping finalize my script, and even talking me through my pre-filming nerves. I truly couldn't have done it without you 💙
She’s back!
I'M BACK!!
“Will be…?” “Are proving to be” is better imo! /pos :D
@@NightsArtChannel 100% yes... my bad! Wrote too quickly. She is great!
This is, by far, the most insightful thumbnail guide I have ever seen. I might watch it again and take notes.
this series is literally the best series ever.
Girl I love Figma so much! tbh I don't even have Photoshop installed (gasp!) because it's just so unintuitive to me. But Figma is the best
*furiously scribbling notes*
Finally the wait is over ❤
It is! Hope you enjoy!!!
Probably one of the most well-explained videos I've seen, organizing everything into one (with references to other sources). Thank you so much!
I am so impressed by this video. It's a masterclass in thumbnail design. I can't imagine how much work went into creating this!
Ahhhh I'm so glad you thought it was worth the wait! Thanks for being patient :)
Finally I make 5 page of Points and information in Just 1 video Of Yours 💛👍🏼 Awesome Work Mam !!!! 👌
-Nathan
love it!!!
Hello from Vlad! Glad to see you here :)
Thanks for this.. I'll try it out.. New subbie 💕 Just started mine so need all the advice xD Lets see how this goes...
THANK YOU!
Great job! 🎉
Thank you so much!
Why is this free?
It isn’t :) she’s making ad revenue! ❤
Cause I just shared it with 5 of my friends .
It’s not, she’s monetized
Shush!! Don’t give her ideas😫
So much value for free 🔥🤯
The psychology behind this is amazing. Had no idea.. amazing video, thank youb❤
Bless your HEART! This is the BEST thumbnail tutorial on RUclips PERIOD! Its wholesome, well thought-out, and the cadence is PERFECT!
Thank you! ♥
This is the first useful thumbnail video I've watched. Explaining the different curiosity gaps is hugely helpful.
There are a lot of RUclips videos about thumbnail making, but I finally found the one that actually explains everything from start to finish, while making sense. Thanks a lot.
This is FANTASTIC. So many RUclips theory videos say the same old crap over and over. This actually was full of really useful information. Thanks so much,
ahhh I'm so glad to hear that!! I'm so happy this helped 💙
Woow this is brilliant.! Who would think it can get this scientific! I can't wait to experiment with the tips on my thumbnails 🏃
Honestly… this is the best tutorial I have seen yet on thumbnails! You’re doing an incredible job. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into this. Now let’s see if I can improve my thumbnails 😆
The work you put in to this is so seen and I am amazed!
This feels like an expensive course... it is really golden... you don't know how grateful we are for this clear and detailed analysis...
This was an exceptionally made video, full of usable information and no real fluff. The quality was so good that I felt like this is a video that would have been a lesson in a course. Well done! You got yourself a new subscriber, something I rarely do these days.
I can attest that if actually use all the tips provided in this video it's almost impossible NOT see results. Thank you so much!
I had this video passed on to me by a fellow content creator. Wow, that's an awesome video!! Thank you sooo much!
I've seen so many thumbnail videos but this is the first that goes beyond "it's really important, create curiosity, and stand out" which are all very true but it's so helpful to actually be told HOW! The infographic at the end was also extremely valuable, and I can't say how much I appreciate it!!
Ahhh I'm so glad you found this helpful!! Thank you so, so much!
Thanks.
sweet detailed video
im keeping it simple for now
i just love to be on line
and write
i must realize my dream one way or another
keep going and achieving guys
Please do more like this CANVA and thumbnail tutorials using a variety of effects, layers, pages, tools, etc. Not only was this the best thumbnail "how to" tutorial but the best CANVA one I've seen. As a new CANVA user this video has increased my skills by 500%. Can't wait for more videos on this channel.
The thumbnail to this video made me search it again just so i can click on it. You're brand new to my feed and i have never heard of you. That shows how good you are at this. Thank you 🙏🙏🙏🙏
This video is so good. Thank you!
This is by far the most helpful thumbnail video I've seen in years doing this; I learned so much! Thank you for all your hard work, ez sub
Imagine if videos like these were shown in school. Just a half an hour of pure value.
Might honestly change someone's life
THUMBNAIL MASTERCLASS FR 🤯🤯
how is it even free so much love for this info
The combination of the thumbnail and the title made me click on the video (for the 2024 algorithm specifically) because I did not want to have outdated advice, so far best video on thumbnails that I have seen
