"Are you gonna fuckin' PAY me now??!!" is what Shaq yelled at team owner Jerry Buss from on-court after a throwdown during a pre-season game during his '04 contract negotiations. Love Shaq for life, but his friction with Jerry Buss and conditioning was seriously underplayed in this video, in favor of far too much media-inflated "feud" hype - hype that was inflated from basic conditions of having (arguably) the 2 most valuable players on the same team at the same time. Every bit of drama gets amplified and dissected.
MHU 2k while I personally liked Kobe before his death u should still not change opinion based on death Kobe was selfish on the court and there’s nothing wrong with that it’s a part of his legacy
To be honest I'm glad that Kobe and Shaq split when they did, otherwise we wouldn't have got to see Kobe's individual dominance carrying the Lakers and the Wade/Shaq connection in Miami. Too much of a good thing always has consequences.
SpyHarms yeah i get you but i would have loved to see them atleast till 2006 because then Kobe would take the nr1 spot on offense and Shaq could play a similar role as in Miami
Kobe had a pretty good Squad when he won without SHaq tho. He had Prime Gasol and Odom was ballin. Bynum was still up and coming but still a massive body that could defend along with some good shooters and perimeter defenders. Dont forget he also had Adam Morrison :)
+AR2 Agreed! If even one of those knuckleheads were smart enough to be the better man, they'd have 6-8 together and Kobe would've had his Finals MVPs from 2006 onwards. As long as one of them was showing by example that they could be the better man and take one for the team, the other would've followed suit I'm sure. I hate to discredit Detroit's amazing efforts, but that 2004 finals could've been a lot more different if Kobe wasn't trying to prevent Shaq from getting that Finals MVP too
Hardly anyone mentions the fact that with the exception of Glen Rice in 2000, Bryant never had a spot-up ace to kick the ball to for his entire career. Fisher, Horry, and Vujacic all played hot(well, lukewarm usually) or cold in Jackson's scheme. That Kobe ALSO never had a half-decent distributor to initiate the offense with either, is just as nuts! The dude was expected to be both play-maker, spot-up shooter AND the clutch finisher... while keeping The Diesel happy as well. Kind of impossible, when you ponder it. Kobe's cheating in Colorado and Jackson's coaching in 2004 didn't exactly help, either LOL. He should have limited Malone to 28-30 min max per game at that age, and brought Payton (or even Kobe) off the bench more often, so as to smooth out and optimize team chemistry, egos and production.
Too many players grow up as young people dreaming to be a superstar and nothing but, greater than anyone else, often being a good teammate is not even a thought.
If they stayed together, Shaq would be the best center of all time, him and Kobe might be in conversation of GOAT, mainly Kobe. I could definitely see them having 6-8 rings together tho.
celticpride859 Why do so many people say this?? I don't buy it. I'm a huge Laker fan. I remember how fast Shaq started declining after they split. Yeah, he won one more with Wade (who played out of his mind) but it was a steep fast decline after that. If Shaq and Kobe stayed together, they get one more maybe, but not more than that
Stuff and Thaaangs I agree 100%. I'm a heat fan and Shaq those 3 years in Miami was not the dominant force we all knew him to be. He was outplayed by Ben Wallace in both of those ECF meetings, and in 2006 he missed most of the regular season due to injury. He was also foul prone, and a liability late in games due to hack-a-shaq. He was key in bringing the first banner to Miami, but his decline was evident.
Eddie Eddie kobe and shaq played a few more years together like 2-3... Kobe was young at the beginning which is why they didn't get more, with lj and wade it's a combo of lebron not holding up his end in 2011 and them getting together at the tail end of wades prime
Kobe was right to question shaq's leadership. if THE alpha in the team sags off, then the whole swags off. a young lion like kobe is gonna pounce. had shaq applied himself, after chip 3, kobe would had dat 5-peat: GOAT
"had shaq applied himself, after chip 3, kobe would had dat 5-peat: GOAT" Kobe played as much of a role in them not winning in 03 and is the biggest reason they lost in 04 to the pistons. Kobe played absolutely horrible that series and was clearly trying to go for finals MVP which made him shoot them out of the series.
Oh so if shaq applied himself kobe would have the 5 peat huh? So shaq applying himself=kobe legacy? My god are every one of you kobe fanbois actually this stupid? W/out shaq kobe would have 2 rings. But yep shaq needed to apply himself, smh. Remember kobe never won a ring w/out phil jackson either. With shaq/phil 5 rings. W/out shaq/phil 0 rings. That says it all. Also remember how kobe's contract killed the lakers the last few years he was there. Compared to the athletes like brady who has repeatedly taken less so the team could get better players to win. That was another reason kobe wanted shaq gone, money. He knew he could not get a max deal with shaq there. And even after shaq was gone he acted like a child when he criticized the lakers publicly and demanded they trade him in 2006. Yep sounds like a great leader to me. Dude has been nothing but a selfish me 1st shoot 1st player his entire career. Not to mention his awful field goal % and player efficiency, especially when compared to other great players. The Kobe & Shaq feud is one of my favorite topics I`ll do on here. I had this planned back in August but it got pushed aside. Shaq openly admitted to not liking when Penny Hardaway became popular and excelled while in Orlando because he wanted it to be HIS team. A wedge had been driven between them too but not on the level of Shaq and Kobe's. Many players that have played with Kobe talk about how he was a difficult teammate. If the Lakers won but Kobe had a bad game he would get angry at them for celebrating which other players have attested to. Years after Shaq left Kobe immediately said "I have more championship rings than Shaq" after winning his last Finals appearance. Both were great players but nobody else was allowed to grow if they played alongside either of the two due to their egos. Great players but bad teammates.
Shaq won 1 championship without Kobe, And Kobe won 2 championships without Shaq. Man, if these two have played together for a longer time, I think they could've bring longer dynasty in NBA
Grew up with Kobe and Shaq dominating the game and I was really sad when they split up. Thanks for clarifying the events surrounding the split. I'm definitely one of those who wonders what could've been if they stayed together.
that was the season when jordan played 17 games because he decided to quit baseball. if jordan didn't play baseball the bulls would have destroyed the magic
At least this duo won titles. I can think of three exciting duos that would've been great to see more of and probably would've at least competed for titles. McGrady & Carter - Raptors Marbury & Garnett - Timberwolves Iverson & Stackhouse - 76ers All these potentially deadly combos broke up in some way because of ego.
TheBrownGuy I didn't forget. They had plenty of time it just wasn't gonna happen. The duos I listed never even made a serious run because they split up soon after their pairing. Durant and Westbrook got to a Finals and should've made another one. They underachieved but they had their chance.
They were the best duoin NBA history years ahead of many players out there and great one two punch but shaq was jealous and Kobe proved he could win without him and shaq won a title without Kobe
90 percent of the championship teams have had a Top 10 PG ( during that time ) except Kobe. Kobe has never had a true pg or playmaker for any of his championship's so to say Kobe was only a scorer is just ignorant
This is a straight up lie. Every title from 91-06 didn't have a "top ten PG" except 04 the ONLY teams with that (post merger) are the Bad Boy Pistons, Showtime Lakers, 08 Celtics and the Warriors.
Man I love your videos. Being a huge NBA nut all my life, watching the videos that you have put together are spot on with what I remember from back in the day. Great work friend, and keep it up!
MrAVGNdude wow no way, a ball dominant player who played for a team for 20 years is top 5 in assists!! Anyway, if you watched this video you would know that he's not talking about passing when it comes to selfishness. He is referring to Kobe's inability to be a great teammate and put his personal goals behind that of the team. His selfishness is part of the reason for the split.
Sometimes personalities don’t match. What I would have LOVED to see is Kobe and someone like a Kevin Garnett, with intensity and drive to match Kobe. And Shaq would have been great with someone like Iverson, laid back until it’s time to go.
As a Lakers Fan since Kobe retired we have been a shit show and when Shaq and Kobe played together they made me a Laker Fan and when Shaq was traded I thought we would never win without him then came 2009 and 2010 then Kobe bieng old and injured all the time then came six straight years of failing to make it to the playoffs and signing LeBron just to fail bieng a fan of them has been hard hope things change
Former GM Jerry West could have kept them together. He commanded respect like no one else in the Lakers organization. He knew how to squash beefs between them. Mitch Kupchak didn’t have that ability
Dom, we can tell that your videos are worked on hard and you try. Thanks for being great man. Keep doing what you are doing and you will go far my friend
You forgot to mention during the rape case when Kobe got in the car . He said I should have paid like Shaq did . If true that would explain why he did not support him during it .
Kobe snitching on Karl Malone and Shaq most definitely caused huge problems. Kobe going into a meeting and saying he would not say anything about Shaq in the media anymore and then leaving that meeting and going straight to the media to call Shaq fat and out of shape probably caused some issues as well. Both players got petty, no doubt. Leaving things like what Kobe said about Shaq and Karl paying women to stay quiet out of this video hurts the credibility but not enough for me to hate the creator.
I'm really enjoying the fresh, new content that you are putting out. It shows that you are putting in hard work in your videos. Keep up the good work and you'll be over 100K in no time!
You know, I could honestly see how after you’ve won three titles with somebody you aren’t as motivated to keep winning the same way. Like for me if I beat somebody 3 games in a row at something I don’t try as hard after. It’s not surprising that they wanted to see if they could win without each ither
Dom got the the best basketball content out there. He even takes the time to put his sources in the description. You're killing it man. Still wondering what that song in the intro is though
You pretty much nail this. You DO ask for other possible contributing factors. Here's one.The 2004 Finals. Sure Karl was out (injured); sure Payton season-long wouldn't accept being 3rd-4th fiddle like he should have; but the Lakers still should have beaten the Pistons. ALL they had to do was exactly what they did every series up until then: go INSIDE-OUT; go into Shaq virtually every time. Shaq would have either fouled Ben Wallace out or forced the Pistons to double-team him all game long. Either way, this would have allowed Kobe to go ballistic. I loved both of them; but Kobe a tiny bit more. But in THIS case, that Finals defeat, IMO, is ALL on Kobe. Now, I DO understand that Kobe's righteous frustrations with Shaq's lacsadaisical attitude towards his conditioning and all the other things you mentioned contributed to Kobe finally having enough of Shaq getting too much credit. So then, here's the next factor: If PJax has been a better personnel manager (or if Jerry West had still been around with the almost unlimited respect he had from both players) - what otherwise, in hindsight, seemed inevitable, their break-up - should have and could have EASILY been averted. All that really needed to be pointed out was that IF ONLY they co-operated together, they'd have extremely high odds to get to as many as 10 Finals with perhaps 8 Rings (with the first 4 fMVPs for Shaq; and the 2nd set of 4 fMVPs for Kobe). This would have come close to guaranteeing that the GOAT discussion would have been reduced down to: Shaq or Kobe for GOAT. What FOOLS!
Are you kidding me, Detroit's defense was about stopping everyone else except Shaq, pretty much what every team did before winning his rings. Game 1 of that series was perfect example of why that didn't work because once a number of Shaq's inside shots don't fall and the outside shooting faltered Detroit was in control. The key adjustment that Phil Jackson and the Lakers did not make in that series offensively was pushing up the tempo to prevent Detroit's 3/4 court presses and traps to slow the ball down to prevent Shaq from getting in position which prevented the Inside-Out game to the outside and mid range shooters. This is the very thing San Antonio did the next year to beat Detroit. It worked for the Lakers Game 2 for the key spurt that got the Lakers the win, it would have worked the entire series couple this with GPayton not excepting a bench role like he should he done here and not allowing Fisher to start the games which would have forced Chauncey Billups to play both ends which would have lowered his point production.
Joshua James Was looking for someone to mention this. Penny was a beta and Shaq still had insecurities, especially when the Lil' Penny commercials aired. To publicly take shots at the guy who he wanted drafted simply on the basis that he was jealous due to the notoriety Penny had deservingly recieved says a lot about him. He tried vieling it under his "playing around" antics but that came off as petty, considering the guy was carrying his team and kept them competitive while Shaq was out. I think the blow over that occurred in Orlando during that time wasn't able to happen in LA because of Kobe being an alpha as well. I love both players, flaws included, but after that 30 for 30 I started seeing Shaq a little differently, especially in regards to the duo break up.
A lot of people say this whole feud was kobes fault but that definently isn't the case shaq had a lot of issues too shaq just left so it looks like kobe threw shaq away
Enjoyed the insight offered in the video. I believe the following was part of the reason as well. I believe that the main reason that they both put up with one another was that Jerry West helped them understand that they needed one another. When Jerry West left the organization, there was not a person that both respected enough to really listen to about their relationship. At the very end, Mitch Kupchak (sorry if spelling is wrong), who took the role of GM after West, spoke in the press about doing whatever it took to keep Kobe, and was ambivalent about Shaq. Not long after that, Shaq demanded to be traded. I believe they could have won 2-3 more championships. Sadly, the role of Shaq and Wade was very similar to the role that Shaq and Kobe could have had in LA. In the end, probable Laker championships went to other teams.
+Anton Burrell From what I understood West was a big influence on Shaq, but it was really Phil's job in actually getting them to work together (he didn't stop them from taking shots at each other obviously )
I'm sorry I love Shaq but back then he was a diva and had the wrong people in his ear. His Situation with Kobe was the same issues he had with Penny in Orlando, period. He wanted all the focus on him. That Orlando team was in line to be something special and Penny wouldn't have had to carry that team on his back alone, which would have lead to him possibly not being injured as much. Hardaway's potential was on another level had he not got hurt.
These two have buried the hatchet. Kobe's gone on to say that Shaq was one of the most dominant big men ever. And Shaq has even gone on to say that He thinks Kobe is the greatest laker (which is really high praise considering he elevated Kobe over Kareem and magic) and that Kobe was better than Lebron. But you still gotta wonder what would have happened if Kobe and Shaq got along better during the 04 Finals and Malone didn't get hurt during the Playoffs.
This was all late, but one interesting thing occurred during the Shaq and Kobe era. In 1999, (before the 3-peat happen) the Lakers decided to bring in Dennis Rodman. For almost the entire 1998-'99 season, the Lakers had a big three of Shaq/Kobe/Rodman. Sadly, the Lakers cut Rodman after 23 games due to his bizarre behavior. One of the reasons on why he wanted to leave the Lakers was because he couldn't deal with Shaq and Kobe fighting all the time. So you can say that their breakup was bound to happen (even back in 1999). I still wounder to this day what could've happen had Rodman stayed with the Lakers. He could've had 8 championship rings. But, yea that's something I bet little know. It's pretty interesting to me tho.
It wasn't just Shaq and Kobe. Malone played a part too, Kobe stated many times that Malobe tried hitting on his wife. Further Jackson wasn't exactly helping either. Kobe also stated on many times that he and both Shaq were tired of his antics at times. I believe a video somewhere on ESPN explains this. Just look for it
Kobe said to detectives this “I should’ve done what Shaq does also saying that Shaq would pay his women not to say anything" and has already paid up to $1 million "for situations like this." Also “he stated he Bryant treats a woman with respect therefore they shouldn’t say anything”
Kobe and Shaq are one of the best duos ever because no matter what was wrong with them off the court they still balled the fuck out on the court
2 legit 55-60 oint scorers together...most duos wish they could do that

Amazing content, thanks bruh

@Leland Joseph That's if you ignore Wilt, Kareem and Lebron.
They were both selfish, stupid, greedy and so arrogant at that time.
Well. They could have won at least, at least 2 more.
At least this duo won titles. I can think of three exciting duos that would've been great to see more of and probably would've at least competed for titles.
McGrady & Carter - Raptors
Marbury & Garnett - Timberwolves
Iverson & Stackhouse - 76ers
All these potentially deadly combos broke up in some way because of ego.
+Green Reaper Very sad
Green Reaper Don't forget Durant and Westbrook
TheBrownGuy I didn't forget. They had plenty of time it just wasn't gonna happen. The duos I listed never even made a serious run because they split up soon after their pairing. Durant and Westbrook got to a Finals and should've made another one. They underachieved but they had their chance.
@@Rk9555 Durant & Kobe Would've Been Lethal
I grew up in LA
Already know why they split up Just wanted to comment
Shaq and Kobe are the greatest 1 2 punch of all time
They were the best duoin NBA history years ahead of many players out there and great one two punch but shaq was jealous and Kobe proved he could win without him and shaq won a title without Kobe
90 percent of the championship teams have had a Top 10 PG ( during that time ) except Kobe. Kobe has never had a true pg or playmaker for any of his championship's so to say Kobe was only a scorer is just ignorant
Sky High MJ Bulls didn't, Hakeem didn't, and the Spurs in 99 and 03 didn't
This is a straight up lie. Every title from 91-06 didn't have a "top ten PG" except 04 the ONLY teams with that (post merger) are the Bad Boy Pistons, Showtime Lakers, 08 Celtics and the Warriors.
He did have a true point. Derrick Fisher was a key contributor to their offense in 2008 to 2010 championship runs
@@jhines7649 fisher was not a true point guard 😭😭

Man I love your videos. Being a huge NBA nut all my life, watching the videos that you have put together are spot on with what I remember from back in the day. Great work friend, and keep it up!
Appreciate it!
Keep up the good work boss. You're quickly becoming one of my favorite RUclipsrs!
all shaq needed to do was work as hard as kobe and not be lazy
Kobe is all time top 5 in assists for the lakers... stfu ^
His selfishness is part of the reason for the split.
all kobe had to do was work hard as WADE! and he couldve made the playoffs after shaq left!
Sometimes personalities don’t match. What I would have LOVED to see is Kobe and someone like a Kevin Garnett, with intensity and drive to match Kobe. And Shaq would have been great with someone like Iverson, laid back until it’s time to go.
@@Reedstick Kobe's personal goals were winning. Nothing else.

Always great to hear about one of the most fascinating teams in my childhood.
Bron won ya'll a championship lol

Logan Notarianni he wasn't that old. He joined magic in his early 30's

You make great videos, dude. I can tell that you really put in a lot of effort and have a lot of knowledge. Keep it up, dude.
RIP Kobe!
Former GM Jerry West could have kept them together. He commanded respect like no one else in the Lakers organization. He knew how to squash beefs between them. Mitch Kupchak didn’t have that ability

Thanks, Dom. Great video. Too many people are biased. I'm glad you aren't one of them
You forgot to mention during the rape case when Kobe got in the car .
Taybizzness That story didn't break until after the split
christina cumba The video was about why they split up.
The snitching story broke when Shaq was already gone.
Not if you live in LA. It was major news the moment he said it.
Regardless, it was a major reason for Shaq not giving Kobe support during the trial.
that was after they already gave hiding shit and it was already out of control
I'm really enjoying the fresh, new content that you are putting out. It shows that you are putting in hard work in your videos. Keep up the good work and you'll be over 100K in no time!

Very nice work Dom! Thanks for the vid
+Pwnership Thanks for watching!
You know, I could honestly see how after you’ve won three titles with somebody you aren’t as motivated to keep winning the same way.
Like for me if I beat somebody 3 games in a row at something I don’t try as hard after.
It’s not surprising that they wanted to see if they could win without each ither
Dom2k makes the best RUclips NBA videos. Just incredible. Keep it up! Hope you get wealthy off this!
Goodbye KOBE, Rest easy KING

+Not My Name Thanks man!
I didn't make the ad so I'm honestly not sure sorry
Nice video bro
I give you props for this one...
Because they were both freaking egomaniacs
despite all these... i still love kobe.... thats his attitude... havibg attitude is cool... he is a true competitor
also important to note SHAQ had alpha problems with penny
I've heard, gotta look into that.
Thank you for making amazing contents! I love it when I learn a thing or two about the NBA, past, present or future. lol
A lot of people say this whole feud was kobes fault but that definently isn't the case shaq had a lot of issues too shaq just left so it looks like kobe threw shaq away

The beginning made me think I was watching a GD'shiglights video lol
Yet another great video Dom2k! Extra brownie points for being a Celtics fan!
I like this channel
Lakers should've traded shaq for Kevin Garnett when they had the chance
TJ The 90s KID They actually tried to trade Shaq to Dallas for dirk, but Mark Cuban refused that trade.
OH GOD THAT WOULD BE SCARY
dav238 No way was mark gonna give up dirk.
Because Shaq wasn't going to Minnesota.
Shaq would only play for 3 teams. Dallas, Miami or New Jersey.
Mike and Scottie will always be the number one DUO,HANDS DOWN!
Your videos are so good bro
These two have buried the hatchet. Kobe's gone on to say that Shaq was one of the most dominant big men ever. And Shaq has even gone on to say that He thinks Kobe is the greatest laker (which is really high praise considering he elevated Kobe over Kareem and magic) and that Kobe was better than Lebron. But you still gotta wonder what would have happened if Kobe and Shaq got along better during the 04 Finals and Malone didn't get hurt during the Playoffs.
Factz
This is so crazy rip kobe💔
wow. im so glad i follow you man!! new prespecrives on these subjects everyday! thanks!
Just look for it
Dude I love your channel and your content your one of the best basketball channels keep it up the good work and make great content
Didn't kobe snitch on shaq?
+nbastar116 That story didn't break until after the split.
What did Shaq do exactly
Starpower44 ' snitched on shaq for cheating on his wife
Without snitchers people wouldn't be honest. And you know where society leads toward.
Kobe said to detectives this “I should’ve done what Shaq does also saying that Shaq would pay his women
not to say anything" and has already paid up to $1 million "for
situations like this."
Also “he stated he Bryant treats a woman with respect therefore they shouldn’t say anything”
