Thank you for your time and energy for sharing these insightful snippets into history from a ever curious Englishman.
And if you wanted to throw the Normans into the mix . Their influence has long perplexed me as Scotland was the only nation that the Normans influenced in a different way from there normal practice of Conquest, marriage and alliance was the way that the Bruces and Comyns came to prominence they didnt do this anywhere else

Very interested in this area of Southeastern Scotland the Angle territory. Always wondered how much of the Britons stayed in the area and were under rule by the Angles or did they mostly head west to Strathclyde. Thanks again Bruce great video.
Though it's probable that disease to some extent opened up the land to invaders. Plague is believed to have come from the southwest i.e. the Roman Empire, with the invaders coming from the east and much less severely hit by it. The early warrior invaders would have been short of women. Servants, serfs and slaves are valuable assets. Also taking children to raise as part of your own tribal group helps too more quickly replace the inevitable casualties. I'd say large numbers of surviving Britons stayed put. They were subsumed into the new dominant culture as most American Natives are today outside of the reservations. Further south from an Angle, Saxon and Jute perspective Scotland, Wales and Cornwall would be the equivalent of reservations (no pejorative meant they represent the limit of the power of the invaders). Celtic strongholds also existed in the English Peak and Lake Districts for awhile. When the Norse came to England they being of such a close linguistic and cultural group in large areas must simply have became, Norman like, overlords and did much less displacement of populations. Once again locally becoming the dominant culture and able to control such things as place names but eventually subsumed like the were Normans in their turn into what was to become English culture as must the Angles in Scotland have been into Scottish culture. But all groups will have left their contribution to some aspect of future culture. So the Scots (not Gaelic that's Irish) language probably has foundations that predate Modern English and is influenced by Modern English rather than being a dialect of Modern English
There definitely a lot of Brythonic influence in the placenames and a fair few Gaelic ones also. The Lothians seem to have been a pretty contested area between Britons, Gaels and Angles.

Surely anything in Britain, in Europe even, between 410 and King Offa 350 years later was so chaotic and the written accounts so unreliable that we can only guess at what really happened. The fundamental idea of a European civic society was reinstated with the coronation of Charlemagne in 800- just in time for the Vikings to arrive in continental Europe. Even in the 12th century, absolute chaotic breakdown could come back at any time, in a way that didn't even happen in the wake of such catastrophes as the Black Death, the Thirty Years War or World War II. We may see those days again, as our basic social ties and institutions weaken.
@@youdontknowmebut Without the past there cannot be a future, that is why trying to deny the past is insane. I always say that my past is the road that brought me to today.
Now I know how Bernard Cornwell's fictional Uhtred of Bamburgh Castle sort fit into the creation of England and Scotland via a very loose historical tie in with the real historical Uhtred of Bamburgh Castle. You’re a natural presenter. Now I’m off to watch your video on the Picts. PS liked that walking programme on the BBC the other week.
Oh, after reading 13 Bernard Cornwell's books, this is the video that I needed. I would like to see Bamburgh Castle from a short distance 😔 Anyway I loved it as always ❤
It’s my understanding that the story that the Angles “ suddenly invaded” is indeed a myth. According to many Archaeologists they were in Britain way before the Romans split. It makes sense as well since they were traders and great Sailors. But this doesn’t explain why the Scottish cutie Sheena Easton now resides in Nevada
Morris stated that large numbers of Angels were employed by the Romans. There are Germanic cemetaries outside Roman towns from long before the Romans left. Sheens Eastern must be in her seventies now LOL
@@kevinreillydenmylne Yes, it seems to be more or less accepted that there was a filtration of ‘german speaking’ peoples into Britannia, even well before the Romans managed to subdue much of the Island in AD43. Caesar hints strongly at such, particularly with his description of the Belgae. Then there’s the development of the ‘Saxon Shore’ defences from the mid-3rd century onwards. Add this long-term presence to those coming in during the chaos of the final Roman withdrawal, whether invited or not, and you get a longstanding linguistic and cultural presence in the island. It sort of explains a lot of things, especially the rapid adoption of the language and culture, even amongst the ‘Brythonic’ population. Some of those legendary early ‘Anglo-Saxon’ leaders even have Celtic names.
Thank you once again for making such consistently fine presentations of and explanations of Scottish history. Does "S math a ring thu! work? (Google thinks so.) And kudos again for your videographer! 👏
I'm loving these latest videos! And I'm really happy to see a critical look at the idea of ethnicity. I'm not shy about not loving Neil Oliver, but once of the worst pieces of pseudo science I've seen him present was "Faces of Britain', where he tried to extrapolate from the genetic make up of current populations around the UK if they would still have a physical resemblance to remains found from antiquity. It was 4 part headache that revealed nothing more profound than "Not even the English want to be Anglo Saxons". It did not take into consideration that populations move and diffuse over time, that plagues and famine and war can change the make up of an area, and that having a genetically stagnant population is bad actually.
@Gordon Brown Exactly, native English people(angles saxons jutes frisians) are also "Celts" if the native brittonic population were "Celts" . Even then we have found that the "celtic" groups in uk/ireland are less related to each other than some are to the "English". Dna is your friend. It is just science once you wade through the profiteering side of the geneology industry. Seems like a trend in academia/socially to overlook science to round out historical narratives to not "rock the boat", but its science, not speculation. "Celtic" wasnt a genetic grouping but purely cultural, law, language etc.
Like the humour, it's a bit like my old history teacher Rab Alexander - I recall one time after drawing a Roman Quinquereme on the board he drew a sharks fin near it and labelled it 'Anthony Barber' ! Well he was a Partick Thistle supporter!
Great video. Absolutely correct about the ethnicity point, North American politics in the 1700s 1800s and 1900s made genetic heritage really important to them. The idea of Anglos Saxon Americans, Scots Americans etc. was basically made to prejudice groups they saw as less than, awful stuff. End of the day we only have 46 chromosomes and millions of ancestors.
My mums side is Dutch and me Da’s side is Scottish so half of me wants to start a fight in a pub ….and the other half doesn’t want to pay for it 😂 😂 😂 you choose which half goes where 😂
@@ScotlandHistoryTours Not according to the Belgians who tell jokes about the Dutch being tight! Of course the Dutch tell jokes about Belgians being thick.
All ethnicities are essentially an amalgamation, no ethnic group is ethnically pure. Germanic peoples settling in modern day Scotland over 1000 years ago doesn't disprove the existence of Scottish ethnicity anymore than Bantu peoples settling in modern day South Africa disproves the existence of the Khoi-san as an ethnic group. Otherwise good video.
It kind of does. Scottish isn't really an ethnicity, it is a nationality. The Bantu people and the Khoisan people aren't the same ethnicity, and neither are the Gaels and the "Inglis". At the end of the day, though, we are all mixed as you say so nationalism and xenophobia is ridiculous.
Very interesting video, love it, maybe more history about England and Northern England too. We all are connected somewhere on these islands through a bloodline.
The whole world's connected. I am doing a week on the border at the end of March, so we'll cross over as I did here, but remember the channel is SCOTLAND History Tours.
This is most fascinating. So many people fighting over one island. And these combined people led to the British empire. (They couldn't have done it without the Scots, I do believe!) Amazing people
good to see the distinction between the angles, rather than the saxons. it was the angles who settled in south east scotland. these were originally a different, though related people to the saxons, who settled in southern england. the angles were originally culturally more Danish / Scandinavian rather than the saxons who came from whats now Germany. Too often I read posts & watch videos about the Saxons being in South Eastern Scotland. The Saxons were never in Scotland. It was the Angles. Whos origin were a different people. & it does matter. The Saxons werent even in Northern England. Again it was the Angles. Northumbria particularly was an Angle kingdom which held out for quite some time as being distinct from Saxon England. Culturally it could even be argued that Northumbria was closer to Scotland than to England. Even today, what was Northumbria is different to the rest of England. And a significant chunk of what was Northumbria is North of Hadrians Wall.
Interesting point but I think the Angles and the Saxons were largely indistinguishable by the time England formed as an identity. In the early period there seems to be material evidence that indicates identity to one group of the other but by the 8th century through to the formation of the kingdom of England (its self an Angle title adopted by the Saxon Kings of Wessex, land of the Angles) they appear to be very much a united group. To be Englisc or Angelcynn meant to be Angle or Saxon (or Jutish and Frisian to whatever extent they were still apparent) If Northumbria was closer culturally to Scotland than the rest of England solely based on their Angle ethnicity, so to by extention would the other Angle Kingdoms of Mercia, Lindsey, and East Anglia which would make up most of England. Either way we can never be sure about much in this period but its fascinating to speculate.
Really enjoyed that. The king in the north is my favourite book. It mentions the little village I’m from a couple of times Gilling it’s where Oswine was murdered.
I'm glad the germanic invasive is being considered in Scottish history as Britons and Angles/Jutes play a big part in Northern English and Southern Scottish history. The mordern day split of Scots and English is too simple. British culture is so different in even in England and yet interconnected its seems dumb to me not to appreciate each others differences in culture and yet not recongise that we are better seen as British.
I'm from Australia and I have never been to Scotland, but these videos are like a free tour with the best tour guide.

Great video 👍 I was wondering when you'd make a video specifically on the Angles 😉
This has been the best series of videos yet
Thank you so much
I have been living in Dundee for the past 20 odd years and I never learnt so much

Wonderful!
This channel is better than what's on the tv, loving it
Not many delve into the 600s . A messy time indeed and not well documented. So thanks for this interesting contribution. Good stuff.
My pleasure!
Never miss a video absolutely awesome history is fun and definitely worth watching
😘
Who was it that said “To move forward, we must look back”? Always enjoy your videos, you are so knowledgeable it’s unreal! ✅
@@youdontknowmebut Without the past there cannot be a future, that is why trying to deny the past is insane. I always say that my past is the road that brought me to today.
It took me all of five seconds of watching this video to make me fall in love with your content. Sub'd for life!
Brilliant
Now I know how Bernard Cornwell's fictional Uhtred of Bamburgh Castle sort fit into the creation of England and Scotland via a very loose historical tie in with the real historical Uhtred of Bamburgh Castle. I may be having an epiphany regarding historical fiction and historical fact via Bruce's wee stories.
Love yer stuff Bruce - I live in Alnmouth but I was born in Perth (!) lived in Aberdeen , Edinburgh and Glasgow not necessarily in that order so I know a good spectrum of Scotland, I have been to The Hebrides Orkney and the Northwest . I see you walking on one of our beaches - it's lovely. I am going to have to watch mair ae yer vids as they are captivating and here I am at nearly 11pm! All the best to you and yours.
Close enough to come to the Newcastle gig www.thestand.co.uk/performance/18972/bruce-fummey--scotland-made-the-world/20250828/newcastle
Bruce man you need to be approaching Netflix. Have a series or somthing, not like there isn't enough history to make it worth while... with the whole Scottish independence push a series like that would rocket. Loving the early scotting history too man thanks again Bruce
Steve
Hmmm it seems easier just to do this and swan aboot the place
Excellent stuff again. Good history, one that tells it with all the nuance and complexity, is so important in this post-truth age of re-invented nationalisms of whatever hue. And you do it so well. You’re a natural presenter.
Now I’m off to watch your video on the Picts.
PS liked that walking programme on the BBC the other week.
Thank you sir
Right the moment you mention the vikings the vid was interupted...by a tourism add for Danmark 🙂
First one of your video I've seen but this is awesome better than anything I've seen on TV.
Wow, thanks!
Oh, after reading 13 Bernard Cornwell's books, this is the video that I needed. I would like to see Bamburgh Castle from a short distance 😔
Anyway I loved it as always ❤
It's gorgeous place
Your presenting and production are great mate, really enjoy your content. 👍
Much appreciated!
Sheens Eastern must be in her seventies now LOL
this is correct, it seems northern germanic tribes were referred collectively as Belg
@@kevinreillydenmylne
Yes, it seems to be more or less accepted that there was a filtration of ‘german speaking’ peoples into Britannia, even well before the Romans managed to subdue much of the Island in AD43.
@@robfictionwriter3310 Woah she's younger than me , she's 62.
@@MrSummerblade Its the Vortigen myth , did they invade were they invited ? probably a bit of both
Thank you I like watching your videos
Thank you once again for making such consistently fine presentations of and explanations of Scottish history. Does "S math a ring thu! work? (Google thinks so.) And kudos again for your videographer! 👏

Another awesome one man. Your thumbnails are great by the way

@@ScotlandHistoryTours They're awesome. The bright colours stand out really well on RUclips when I'm flicking through
I'm loving these latest videos!
Ah, I didn't even hear about that. I would have watched out of interest, but my wife won't let Neil Oliver on the telly.😂
You could also mention environmental factors (ice age, warming, and volcanos) which I've always felt are the biggest drivers. But that's me.
Wonder why you don't like NO. (He he he)
@Gordon Brown Exactly, native English people(angles saxons jutes frisians) are also "Celts" if the native brittonic population were "Celts" .
@@ScotlandHistoryTours lmao
Amazing account. Thank you.
Glad you like it!
My mums side is Dutch and me Da’s side is Scottish so half of me wants to start a fight in a pub ….and the other half doesn’t want to pay for it 😂 😂 😂 you choose which half goes where 😂
...and there was me thinking the Dutch were happy to pay their share

(They couldn't have done it without the Scots, I do believe!) Amazing people
Welcome to England Glad to have ya !!
It was shut😜
good to see the distinction between the angles, rather than the saxons.
it was the angles who settled in south east scotland. these were originally a different, though related people to the saxons, who settled in southern england.
the angles were originally culturally more Danish / Scandinavian rather than the saxons who came from whats now Germany.
To be Englisc or Angelcynn meant to be Angle or Saxon (or Jutish and Frisian to whatever extent they were still apparent)
If Northumbria was closer culturally to Scotland than the rest of England solely based on their Angle ethnicity, so to by extention would the other Angle Kingdoms of Mercia, Lindsey, and East Anglia which would make up most of England.
Either way we can never be sure about much in this period but its fascinating to speculate.
and both Germanic as was the rest of North/Western Europe all of them came from a common cultural background with slight tribal differences
Great content as always mate!
Cheers
