I wish I could add a pic here but this worked wonderfully for me! I didn't propagate... but I should have pruned my leggy FLF years ago. It was taller than me, I cut it to about 4 ft tall. Now I've got 3 or 4 branches starting to sprout.

@@FiddleLeafFigPlant I cut off the top about a month ago. I have what I think are two new limbs starting and three other buds, not sure if they will develop. My question today is about the propagation situation. I started out with about six leaves I left on and a fairly good size stem. A week or so ago I read that fewer Leaves are better and I took off all but two. However it hasn’t made the roots grow any bigger. For at least two weeks, the roots are small several maybe 1/8 long, the rest are white nubbin along the last four or five inches of the stem, and I haven’t seen much improvement. Also a leaf bud seems to be developing between the two nice green leaves. Any hints or ideas what I should do if anything? Because of dehydration I added a new cup of water with measured propagation liquid to it.
I would repot first then once the plant has acclimated to the new pot and is healthy, then notch for more branching. For more support, we would love to have you inside our helpful fiddle leaf fig community! Fiddleleaffigplant.com/community
Great video! My question is- after pruning my straight fig, it branched into a Y shape. What do I do now? Prune below the Y, or prune the 2 branches that shape the Y?
Good question! You can prune the 2 branches that shape the Y so that more branches form and produce a fuller looking lollipop shop on the top. Happy Growing!
Great video, very helpful! Is it possible to cut off too much of fiddle leaf fig? I've let this one get way too big as single stalk, is now hitting a 10' ceiling. Is it ok to cut off approx. 5'? And then cut that 5' into smaller segments to propagate? Thanks!
That is a great question! You can cut as much as you like and cut the portion into sections for propagation. Keep in mind that wherever you cut, that main stem will no longer get taller, but the branches that form will.
Thanks for all your incredible knowledge. I feel like I’m doing everything right, but when I cut off my new growth, I indeed got two new plants from the cuttings, but… my original plant only gave me one new branch. It’s happened twice on this plane. At each cut location, only one branch grows. Any recommendations on how to get my tree to get two branches?
Great question! More light would be needed. These plants need a ton of energy to grow new branches. Adding a supplemental grow light nearby can help the plant get that boost it needs to grow more than 1 branch at a time.
@@FiddleLeafFigPlant thanks! I’ve got two potential places to cut. One on brown woody stem (where I don’t really see branch buds) and one place on green stem where I do see buds. Which would you recommend? I prefer the brown wood location because it will look better if the tree branches there, but if I don’t see buds in the notches is that a problem?
Wind training for fiddle leaf figs is how you can get the trunk to grow thicker, stronger, and straighter. Gently 'wiggle' the plant every week and over time, your trunk will be thick enough to notch or prune. Happy Growing!
Hello Claire, I have an indoor fig tree that has lost almost all the leaves. I think as you mentioned in your video, it might need pruning. I’m not sure where to prune it and what to do to save it. It was a gift from a dear friend and I don’t want to lose it. Please help me. Thank you so much. 🙏🏻
If it has lost its leaves, I would prune the stem and branches down until you see sap come out of the I inside. Then leave it in the brightest / sunniest spot you have in your home up against and in front of your brightest window. Water when the top inches of soil are dry and ensure the water is draining really well out the bottom drainage holes. Your plant will come back!
Hi, Claire! I've tried this a number of times with both my fiddle leafs and indian rubber plants but always just end up with a single branch sprouting growing the cut, never more. What am I doing wrong? Thanks!
Have done the is so many times, but it only ever produces 1 new branch so I have a lopsided single stem. What should I do? This has happened to me with multiple plants.
Have you tried notching in multiple places to encourage more branching on the other side? This video will help with notching! ruclips.net/video/-z2c4UtxASI/видео.html

I use a flood fixture with a huge grow light for each and keep your home very warm, place a humidifier near. You will be amazed by the results. I've been growing fiddle figs trees for 22 years. Notching on multiple areas as she suggests is a good technique to grow a fuller tree. Hope all of these suggestions help you! If all your plants do the same, maybe you should do something different ☺️. Maybe they all lean towards the sun, so rotate it, let it dry on the surface between watering. Fertilize in spring and winter and use grow lights!

Hi Robynne, you can attempt notch wherever you would like to see additional growth and branches appear. This can be in multiple areas of your tree. Best to do 3-5 or more notches to ensure at least 1-2 are successful. Also, is your plant ready for the next size up in pot? If you want your plant to continue to grow taller, having a bigger pot size will allow the root system to grow further and eventually grow into a larger tree. I cut the top of mine last year and two branches grew out at the top and now it’s shaped like the letter Y and it looks weird. I removed some of the individual leaves along the trunk (base of the Y). I don’t know where to prune to make it branch. I don’t want more branching at the top (arms of the Y) but there’s no spot along the trunk unless I cut it down again (cut the arms of the Y). I’m not sure what to do with it.
Notching sounds like the technique to try to get your current branches to grow and continue to fill out. Also, is your plant receiving enough light? Adding a grow light can help promote more growth along the existing branches.
