especially the shoulders opener is the key. Hit the ball on the shaft, with too closed club face, etc... I had so many sockets in chipping, pitching etc. Focusing on opening the shoulders and turning a lil bit the hips, going with the ball, helped me a lot. Just changing this I dropped my handicap from 42 to 30. Short game is the key! Thank you for your videos! Amazing tips!
I'm a 3-4 handicap but was a mess chipping for years and people would always say to put your hands forward, so I did and I had many runs in with the enemy, until for some reason I finally figured out to open the face if you put your hands forward. Game changer...and great tip.
All good points on chipping Matt! I did occasionally get the dreaded chunk just off the green. Then, as you suggested in previous videos, I started opening the blade and utilizing the bounce. What a difference! Now I'm working on calibrating the shot. Always enjoy your input Matt! Keep up the good work!!
I really needed to watch this video. I have been staying down too much and I opened the left shoulder and it worked as advertised. Thanks for all of the tips!!
Man, ive been having some issues on my short 58 deg shots and that little pointer about opening the face and using the bounce just clicked! I mean, I'm no rookie but the whole leading edge is your enemy really explained the issue i've been having, particularly with that wedge. Man I really love your channel.
Hi Matt. great vid. In fact it's so useful you could probably make a detailed vid on each of the sections (if you haven't already). I really enjoyed and will be practising the tips tomorrow. Love your 'down to earth' style. Only American on-line youtube coach I follow.
Love your channel! Never have I ever seen a more easy explanation for the game of golf! This takes me to my issue, I push my driver to the right all the time, no slice just straight right push. Do you have a video for that? Thanks in advance!!
Hi Matt, Thats one lesson I desperately needed! I'm being fitted for wedges tomorrow so no doubt I'll be revisiting your tips in my head. Take care and keep the good stuff coming!
It a shame I cant hit like more times!! Watched it three times already. I love the open the face to use the bounce as I'm deliberately making the effort to keep hands forward as in a recent Phil Mick chipping video.. (let's face it, what he doesn't know isn't worth learning). Its made a huge difference already for me but thats the next portion to work with.. Thanks Matt!
Great video Matt. Been following you for several years now. I always love your spirit for golf and playful remarks in an already stressful game. Your chipping tips are by far my favorite, as that’s what impacted my game the most from what you’ve shared. Also hitting out of the sand - I’ve never struggled with that part of my game ever since you shared the analogy of the shanks in prison. I get out alive every time 😂
First, I love your videos. Great tips and real world stuff. One comment I heard from someone recently was, “I can’t get fitted because I don’t swing like anyone else”. So, started me thinking. When SHOULD you get fitted vs. getting some fundamental lessons BEFORE getting fitted? I think it is more subjective than a simple…. Yea, do that… what do you think?
First chip onto the green after applying the "friend" bounce technique and I was robbed of a birdie, inches away from falling in. The most amazing feeling ever after transitioning from being a long time "enemy" type of chipper.
Ain’t gonna lie…I’m liking all these tips Matt since my chipping has been flaky. My fear level is through the roof around the greens. Haven’t heard abt acceleration starting at ball to avoid being handsy before (something new🤔).
Great tips, thank you. I have an issue with the ball setting up on the grass. When I try and chip I under cut the ball and it goes about 4 to 5 feet. In this situation should I be using a less lofted club? Really enjoy your videos!!!
The fall-then-accelerate is the exact move that I adopted/found with practice 2 years ago when I spent enormous time on my short game - it completely transformed me from a total mental case around the green with a 10 handicap to almost now a scratch golfer.
@@kylegiuca7798 No, but I have a few legendary stories about the confusion. I couldn't phone a restaurant and make a reservation without being asked because it was an automatic reservation, etc. I was driving an expensive new sports car back from NY to Toronto and got a flat halfway between Albany and Toronto - the car was so new, tire replacements were unavailable that I was going to have to spend the night in Albany awaiting a tire - so I got the car towed to the dealer, and when I arrived in the tow truck, I had the entire dealer staff waiting to greet me - they waited an hour after closing for me to arrive and had a driver and car waiting to take me to a hotel. I look like Paul O'Neill - but he has 5 inches on me - I told them after I retired I stopped taking the 'juice'.

If you need more height, just open the face slightly more. I could honestly teach you in less than an hour - it took me hundreds of hours to undo the old-school hands forward, ball back in the stance, square face setup. It is very doable - setup is most of it - then just a little practice.
@@wallstreetoneil thanks Paul! Are you saying open stance and open chest? And with your open setup, you are automatically adding bounce without having to open face to target?
Could you also explain how to line yourself up. I'm returning to golf and have a difficult time with the short game. I hear you about opening the club up, but I'm then afraid I will cause a bigger mishit.
Matt my friend you are one of the best teachers :) I love what you do. I can't wait to get out golfing and try some of these helpful tips. Snow in the forecast though in Ile-des-chenes MB Canada YUCK
I generally flop most short shot. I am good at it. I have start to try and chip more shots for more control of distances. Flops just don’t roll out, so the bad shot is way short or 100’ yards past the green. This video has made a lot of sense
Why?? You get it on the ground as much as possible The Flop is a shot that you should rarely play Practice it for sure as it will give you confidence but you don't really need it as much as you think
@@jimlong3223 Why?? Go somewhere you can pitch some balls and get your laser out. Nice Lionel Richie quote. Also you forgot to mention when you open the club face so the leading edge is nuetralized to aim more left, right for a lefty like me, to compensate for the natural face openess. Critical to make sure the shot still goes straight
My problem always comes with the really short-short chips. I don't know if I get too "hand-sy" or what but the shorter chips seem to do me in? Any previous lesson for these ultra short chip shots?
How to chip off hard pan? The only course I have around has more hard pan than grass and I struggle, when I get to go to other courses I chip and pitch pretty well.
What I don't get is how the ball goes straight if the clubface is angled to the right? Do you change your stance as you might in a bunker to "cut" the ball? I just can't wrap my head around an open clubface hitting the ball straight...help!
It’s not the flashiest thing but the bump n run has taken at least 3-5 strokes off for me. Putter stroke with my 7 iron I can give myself easier putts way more consistently
I really love how you just get right to it. Some give these over done intros or explanations that drone on way too long. Thank you Mr ShortGame!
