The BMW 6 Series GT is a large executive hatchback, designed to offer a little more space and practicality than than the hugely popular 5 Series saloon. Indeed, it serves as a direct replacement for the old 5 Series GT. But with the peerless BMW 5 Series Touring also in the range, is there also a place for the GT? Nicki Shields finds out.

If this car could hold that massive 2l bottle you'd probably bring a 3l bottle and still call it fail

@Daniel Usher You seem to be the one that doesn´t know what GT stands for. A GT or "Gran Turismo" originally was a long distance sports car. Typical examples are the Ferrari 250GT or the Mercedes-Benz 300SL. You think this BMW is a sports car? No? So what exactly was your point again?
Sidon Ronaldinho My point, is that this BMW IS sold as a Grand Turismo (or Grand Tourer) because BMW have named it a GT. She then said that, despite it being called a GT it’s more of a Grand Tourer (=GT??) rather than a sporty hatchback. BMW weren’t trying to sell it as a ‘sporty hatchback’... If she’d said “despite it being called a GT it’s more of a sporty hatchback” I’d have seen her point !
I have to admit, she kinda failed that...

Well done, Ms Shields. Thorough, professional and believable presentation. The 6GT definitely seems to have a more finished look than the lumpier 5-series that it replaces. Or am I imagining that? Would a comparison of the two (some side-by-sides both of images and stats) have helped? I think so.

Presumably the only way to keep saloons relevant in the market is to make them all hatchbacks like this. Traditional saloons are starting to look more and more dated to me. And I’m not an SUV fan so this is a good option.
Chris Till I agree, there's just more space and practicality in a hatchback saloon with the same profile as a traditional saloon.
Look at this. Now take a look at the A7. Yeah, this thing is dateeeeeed.

Whats up with those big bottles. Is that a UK thing? I have never brought a 1-1.5L water bottle in the car that I wanted to drink from while driving..

BMW needs to sort out their interior. Been the same design more or less since the e90 first released back in 2005. It's their greatest drawback.

Βασίλειος Πατσίκας I have an e90. And my friend has the new f30 BMW. Feels too similar sitting in either one. There's nothing in the new BMW that makes it feel... well, new. Evolutionary rather than revolutionary design. I prefer BMW over any of the german cars. But that interior, I feel, is lacking.
Asdxzzz my father uses to have the E90 and after that the F10 and I must say the interior was one of the major reasons to change from the 3 series to the 5 series. No comparison between these two but to say that this new 5 and 6 lack because of the interior I completely disagree. BMW interior design might not be wow when you see them but the engineering and the ergonomics are many years ahead. No one beats them in that.
Βασίλειος Πατσίκας The ergonomics I fully agree with. The driving position is the best out of the 3 main german brands. And I love that I can reach all the controls from the drivers seat. The armrest could do with a update, it sits too far back compared to what they had in the e46. But just modern technology you expect to find in a new car. The instrument cluster looks the same as from the e90. Somthing like a digital display like in Audi or Mercedes-Benz would help the car to feel modern. If you look at the Bmw 8 series concept car video here on RUclips, just something along those lines. So when you sit in it, the interior is like, 'wow, this looks/ feels new, modern'. The car is great, but the interior is just too familiar. It's disappointing as when I come to buy a new car, I want the new BMW, but feel like I'll spend all that money only to sit in a car that feels the same as my e90 on the inside.

I have also known GT to have Two Meanings in the Car world.
I think because Porsche - Ferrari - Mercedes "confused" everyone with their GT2, GT3 - GTO - GTR cars.
They are Stripped Down, Hardcore, Track Focused Cars. Not Luxury Grand Tourers.
I've noticed Many car reviewers have had to explain what type of GT car they're driving because people see GT
and think "GT Racing Car" or they think "GT, Grand Tourer."
I've always thought a GT car was a track monster :)

Probably 40 & 50. I get around 44+ mpg on twisty Welsh roads and around 53 - 54 mpg on the motorway

5 series touring is very good looking practical and in my opinion better than 6 series gt.i would rather have 5series touring that 6 series gt.And yes nicki is beautiful😉

Great reviewer. Prob the best since Matt left Car Buyer. Personally I like James B. too but I understand why some people might not. The other 2 ladies that have done reviews for Car Buyer recently are ok, but a few too many "umms" per sentence and a really irritable accent almost got me unsubscribing. Im staying put as long as Nicki and James are around ;)

I just wanted loved... My kind of car.
"There is lots of additional store space in the arm rest" but they give a shot of it, the production quality of these videos have gone backwards. I've noticed very lazy camera work over this past month of videos now. Its kind of pathetic when your quality goes backwards.

This has more space than a 5 Estate. It's also (to me) a nicer shape. And unlike a 5 Estate, the 6 GT doesn't look like every other car in the car park.
