Now these guys are model train men! Listen to the excitement in their voices while discussing trains. Too bad Tom has passed away, but Lionel Trains live on!
lol i love how he mentioned york pa, its really an amazing event my dad is the hall captain for the orange hall and its just a great experience for all ages
Tom Snyder was born in 1936 in Milwaukee. Mandy was born in 1952 (six months after me) in Chicago. Both are big train towns (Chicago used to bill itself as the "Railroad Capital of the World.") It's easy to see why Tom was into coal loaders - they were "the" accessory back when real steamers ruled the day. I loved the wiring aspect, too. I used a lot of telephone wire that my dad brought home from work as scraps (Western Electric.) I'm not sure of the airdate of this show, but Tom died on July 29, 2007 of leukemia. I'm not sure if he ever made it to York, but he had a glorious Standard Gauge (about the size of G-gauge garden trains) train layout and it has been preserved at the New Jersey Hi-Railers' complex in Paterson, NJ. They have a RUclips vid of the layout in operation and a website. Thanks for the memories !
Two big kids playin' and talkin' trains, like the camera isn't even there. Anybody who doesn't get model railroading needs to watch this, for this is why we do what we do.
Tried to explain to my buddies when I was 17 did I don't play with trains I operate them they didn't get it but the girls did that made it even more fun
The interview with Mandy was pretty good, however you should see the one the Tom did with famed Disney animator Ward Kimball on the old “Tomorrow” show.
Hey Mandy when the pandemic is over return to Chicago check out the once a month train show at the DuPage County Fair Grounds ( Wheaton,Ill) . There are 3- 4 buildings plus some vendors outside. Good Yontiv
my layout looks like Mandy's but my wiring is totally "old School". wires EVERYWHERE....I love it !!! Did wiring like that for 23 years as a data comm. engineer, they layout looks new and modern, but the wiring is just the way I did it when I was 8. I wouldn't have it any other way... I did it "my way"... oops wrong star quote. that's ok, Frank loved Lionel's too.
Can anyone tell us the airdate of this show ? (it had to be in Dec. 1996, just before Christmas). This is only one segment of several of this show -- where are the rest? It would be great to see them ALL !
@grizzleybearz282004 Same here. I grow up with TYCO as a kid. My dad bought me a set almost every year. Some of which I still have. I got into O gauge last year, now I can't stop.
My dad started me with TYCO at 6 years old. I now have a ton of HO trains from just about every manufacturer. All of my locomotives are DCC and Sound equipped. Awesome play value.
well i have mth too but i still love my post war lionel and i will say this that mth has surpassed lionel in terms of technology but track wise i prefer lionel fast track
MTH has made more different engines (not different paint schemes, but actually different engines) than ALL of the other past and present 3-rail manufacturers combined.
I stay in the 48 to 70s of Lionel trains I don't go for all the new gadgets and sounds and everything else although it is impressive, it is not the operation I grew up with
yes I sa2w the ward kimbel vids awesome! Im sure tom didnt get huge ratings on these train related shows and he didnt care! really set him apart in my view from most hosts
wow this is just like me! I had my railroad on a ping pong table, my bed was underneath the layout, and i used to love to play with the wires and make everything work. AND i hated my uncles American Flyer collection. weird
I don’t blame the UAW, I blame Wellspring Capital Management (the company that bought Lionel from Richard Kughn in 1996.). Wellspring shifted all of its production to China after that. Keep in mind that this was the 2nd time that they’ve shipped production to another country. Remember the MPC-era fiasco when they’ve tried to make everything in Mexico?
This interviewer seems to not care about what Mandy has to say!!! Just shut up all ready! Cool layout! They see the new technology now! TMCC is obsolete know.
I Love It! I Still Have Mine When I Was 10yrs. old & Now 68 yrs. old ThanksFor The Memories! MoPac Jack 07/05/23 🚂
I still have all my Lionel Trains at 68, I really appreciate their enthusiasm!!
These guys did an excellent job of showing what they feel about this hobby on the outside what so many of us are like on the inside.
Sure do miss Tom Snyder! He was one of the best in TV news and on NBC. Rest In Peace Tom.
I love how they immediately start bonding
Two Midwest guys with a passion for trains. Absolute classic.
Tom was a class act who will never be equaled. And a great Ambassador for Lionel.

I'm an All-Scaler ... This discourse goes to the heart of every Model Railroader - THIS is what it is to be a Train Guy!
I'm HO, OO and O! And love them all.
Patinkin was on STEPHEN COLBERT a couple of days ago, and although now grizzled, is *still* a big Lionel fan!
the most wholesome conversation
When Mandy said "hardware store" that old aroma came back to me.
Thanks for posting this!
I love Mandy so much. I'm glad he credited Neil Young as developer of the new technology.
Neil Young is named as a coinventor on five or ten patents assigned to Lionel on control systems.
Man, These guy`s need to see DCS ! (Nice clip)

haha I just knew this guy was Chicago. what a great city. I'm from near Indianapolis and I really like Indy but Chicago has soul and identity.
I've always loved trains, but never got any as a child. I got my eldest boy a set when he was little, but he wasn't really into them.
Hey even if he doesn't like them, build a layout for yourself if you can!
Two big kids playin' and talkin' trains, like the camera isn't even there. Anybody who doesn't get model railroading needs to watch this, for this is why we do what we do.
Seems like a great guy. I hardly recognize him from the movie that he is most famous for. He was the highlight of that movie in my opinion.
I love both theses guys'... O gauge men'.. O gauge or no gauge guys'...
I love Criminal Minds. Gideon is my new favorite character!
Tried to explain to my buddies when I was 17 did I don't play with trains I operate them they didn't get it but the girls did that made it even more fun

Eu amo Trens Lionel!!!

I have to meet these guys haha!

Lionel lock and electric on 14th street Washington DC gone but not forgotten
aweswome would letterman or leno devote all this time to talking abt trains? i loved tom!
Gargraves track
ok well I guess he was on Chicago Hope? I'm only familiar with it by name so I didn't know he was known, pardon my ignorance

York!
@Douglas Schultz From what I understand Lionel has the better technologies.
I worked on those brakes for 6 weeks.
The best years for lionel was 1946 to 1958. My favourite.
What part number is that Santa Fe F3?
if he thinks Lionel O gauge is a budget buster, he should be glad he has yet to be enticed by live steam.
"You touched my trains Prepare to die."

I actually love TMCC more than Legacy because its simpler than Legacy and easier to work with.
yes I sa2w the ward kimbel vids awesome! Im sure tom didnt get huge ratings on these train related shows and he didnt care! really set him apart in my view from most hosts
Is this an infomercial for lionel trains or something?
Two adults who are like kids around model trains and appreciating the technology.
What year was this?
wow this is just like me! I had my railroad on a ping pong table, my bed was underneath the layout, and i used to love to play with the wires and make everything work. AND i hated my uncles American Flyer collection. weird
@Roger59Dodge The United Autoworkers union put Lionel in China. How could Lionel aford to pay people $18 dollars an hour to assemble track?
