You Rock! Disadvantaged person's families usually can't afford these blankets which start at approx. $150.00. This is so generous of you (to give us this video). Very clear instructions that are easy to follow. Thank you, again.
I have anxiety and I don't sleep well at night because I feel unsafe. I currently have six layers on at night and it's not enough weight. This is exactly what I need. Thank you for making us affordable for people that need a weighted blankets.
You are a life saver, my son is ASD and I think he could really benefit from this blanket, I have priced the weighted blankets and you are so right, they are expensive and with making your own, you can choose your person/childs favourite print with is perfect for an autistic child
I have four sons. They have claimed for years and years that I have the most comfortable bed in the house. I always told them to just make their beds the way I do. With tons of layers. Upon realising we all love very heavy bedding, my sons all put in requests for heavy blankets. I believe one request went like this. "Mom, I want you to buy me a blanket like those xray blankets they use when you get an xray. I want it to be so heavy it will crack my bones." hahaha
Or: rub a normal blanket with catnip. Lie down with the blanket on top of you. Wait for two five pound cats or one ten pound cat to come and lie on top of you. Done.
We had two antique farm quilts that were filled with wool....very heavy. My grandmother said my mother used to use both in the winter with the windows wide open. She may have suffered from anxiety back in the day when that was unheard of. Nice job.
Or not...everyone seems to think only people with mental issues enjoy/benifit from weighted blankets....i myself dont have mental ussues and I really enjoy being covered to the ears with a weighted blanket 🤷♀️
I was just asked to make a weighted blanket today. This was the first video I saw and let me tell you, I love how easy you explain everything. Most definitely will be making it. Thank you so much.
Was watching this video to see if it was possible on a standard size sewing machine (not a long arm) and then I realized madebymarizpan was where I did toe caps for my skates! Keep up the awesome videos!
I made a weighted blanket for myself, but it just didn't feel right straight off. I didn't like so much weight in some areas, but wanted more in others. So after a lot of experiments, I ended up making a lot of individual square pockets, divided the beads and put more in some, less in others, marking them with the weight, and a number, and made some spare. I then went on to put holes in the initial cover that holds the sewn closed pouches in place where the line of sewing would be, and threaded ribbon through to keep the bead bags from slipping around. The whole thing then went into the actual removable cover, using ribbon at the corners to hold it in place, but it also meant that should my body (I have fibro, and restless leg syndrome) require different weights in certain positions, it is easy to replace a pouch with another one. It worked really well, but now have to make myself another one, as my close friend, who has terrible depression and insomnia, needed it more than I do right now, and she swears by it.
I've been feeling crafty lately, and I've been wanting a weighted blanket for a long while, so maybe I'll give this a try soon! You make it look very easy.
Thank you so much. Your video was easy to follow and the weighted lap blanket that I made for my daughter has really helped with her seizures. Now on to making a full blanket. Thank you for your awesome video.
I had not heard of this before this video popped up on my feed. I don’t have any of these diagnoses, but have always preferred heavier blankets ever since I had a cotton quilt as a child. They aren’t as heavy as these, but I still associate the weight with warmth. I really dislike a hot blanket with no weight to it, like a down comforter.. Very interesting...I would like to explore this idea more fully. Thanks so much.
I am happy that you like the Blankets, my mom is one of the rare 10 employees who works at the first store and she is the supervisor, Ms.Donna is the created of the Weighted Comfort blankets and we know her son, josh
Thank you so much for this video. I’ve always loved heavy bedding but the layers made me sweat. This will definitely help me get that weight without the bulk. 👍🏼
What a wonderful thing to share..... I’ve had numerous emotional traumas and feel so safe when the covers are heavy but they can get too warm. Having cats that like sleeping on me LOL, same dilemma... and you are correct- to buy one is booko bucks.
Just make sure that she is physically fit enough to remove the blanket herself, for her own safety. The blanket in this video was only 6 pounds, but it takes some effort for my niece to carry it around!
I've never heard of these but since you mentioned that they're supposed to be helpful for autists, I might try and make one. Also because I'm just so into sewing right now and constantly looking for things to make.
Alyssa Brown it will drive you crazy until you give up. The beads will not stay where they belong so sewing it shut is absolutely impossible. Your best bet is to make tiny individual beanbags and then sew those into the blanket

Hey there! Awesome detailed instructions, really helpful! Thank you! But where do you buy the pellets!? I can’t find them cheaply anywhere! And you mentioned you could make this blanket for around 30 dollars.... is that price including the pellets? As it is price for me to make one is eighty dollars including pellets, and for that price I could just buy a blanket. Please reply!
Thank you for the tutorial. I make rag quilts and a friend wants me to make her a weighted rag quilt. I cut my squares and place batting in between the squares that form a sandwich and sew an X to hold all in place. Since the squares are sewn together with the seams up to cut & rag how would I go about making the pockets?
Cheryl Pickett ... what about instead of sewing an X to hold all into place ... sew three sides of the square then fill with pellets and close up the fourth side?
This is super awesome and I’m so happy I found this! Thank you so much! I have to ask just one question though, since you’re using pellets, is the blanket really noisy?
Thanks a lot for this! Definitely going to do this as I currently sleep with like 4 duvets for the weight, but its get really hot. Was going to ask you about fabric though, what fabric would be best if you want a blanket that provides as little warmth as possible? I basically just want the weight, and then I can put it in a duvet cover and use with other blankets to adjust how hot I get. Again, thanks a lot for a really informative guide!
Gah I was just pondering the same question. I have Fibromyalgia and I find it beneficial to use weight to calm down my hyper vigilance. I was just thinking some light weight sheets might help keep me cool, then I could tuck the weighted blanket in a duvet in the winter.

I make these blankets for people everyday all day.. I was just wondering why you don't use a batting in between the two layers for stability do you not find it very flimsy just using the two fabrics??? do you sew half the blanket first half the blanket and fil it then turn it around sew and fill the other half??? I sew my coloms and mark on my squares close all three sides leaving one end open then I fill my rows until all filled close my top and finished..
+Shelley St.Clair hi! No, if you use fleece on top and bottom it isn't too flimsy, since it's filled with pellets. I've heard a lot of people complain that they're too hot to use most of the year, if there's batting in there as well. The reason I work from the middle out, is because it's much easier to fill the pockets on larger blankets. That can get tricky and messy if you're pouring them down to the bottom of a large blanket. However, if I were doing something small like a lap pad, I would sew the three sides first.
thank you for you reply back when I did a fleece one back and front without batting the pockets full of pellets sagged and looked crappy not sure why mine would and yours doesn't thank you?
Shelley St.Clair if your blanket looks saggy, it's because the pockets need to be smaller so the weight is distributed more evenly. Additional pockets with a smaller amount of beads in each will solve that problem :)
AHHH yes I understand now thank you.. I have another question.. I am looking to make a child's artish cover like your book bag cover I want to add a little snap closure pouch and slots for crayons and a colouring book instead of a bood like in your video do you have or know any where to find a tutorial for it.. Thank you so much for your help :)
I'm making my first weighted blanket. I've heard not to use fleece because if stretched then the poly pellets will eventually fall through the fabric. Is that true? I love fleece and I would rather use fleece than cotton.
The REALLY, big front loader at the laundromat. In the meantime, sew a duvet cover, or 2 for it. It will cut down on the times you need to launder it and thus the wear and tear on a 50 lb. Blanket. It also means that you can often save a bit more on the fabric for the weighted blanket, as drab solid colors are available more often on sale. I plan to do this for my son's blanket and I'm scoping out high thread count sheets from the thrift store to make the blanket and splurge a little on fabric for 2 duvet covers.
I just bought a weighted blanket, and my little girl complains it's too small. She is tall and the blanket falls off her easily. I can't get an answer anywhere else, so I wanted to ask, can I add a boarder to it? Like a cotton on the edges to make sure it stays on her when she sleeps, it's only 4.6lbs, she can use up to 10lbs, so weight isn't an issue. I wanted to add a boarder. I got her the LOL surprise dolls blanket, but she is just too long, and moves too much for it to stay on her, even though she loves it. All the heavier ones are getting in the highter price ranges, and I need 2, so I can't really afford to buy a different one. But I do know how to sew and would love to just alter the one I have.
You can wash a blanket that's 10 pounds or less in the washing machine. If it's heavier, you'll want to take it to a laundromat and use a washer intended specifically for large loads / blankets. You can tumble dry on low, or hang to dry. (I like to drape it over my deck railing to dry in the sun.)
Can you make this out of something other than fleece I have hot flashes and it would be way to hot for me to sleep with so could I make it out of a thinner fabric like a regular sheet
Kingsley Poe I’m pretty sure you could use any fabric that feels nice to sleep under and can be sewn relatively easily. I think cotton would work well because it’s light and breathable.
Punani Booty i recommend going to a local quilting store. Someone there definitely has the skills. They may have classes or someone may be willing to make one for you if you provide the materials.
I just don't understand where you're coming up with your math and saying that it would cost around $30 to make blanket.. Figured out in my head and it would cost a lot more than $30.. Honestly I'd rather just go and spend the money and buy one that's already made that you know will last forever and are made specifically for your body size and weight and height
It’s easy math. You want to make a 7lb blanket that has 36 pockets just.... 16 oz X 7 = 112 ounces of poly pellets. Divide 112 by 36 (# pockets) and you get 3.1. So each of the pockets gets 3.1 oz of pellets.
MadeByMarzipan ❤️ I get that. How about small glass beads? The problem with plastic beads is that it is in all honesty is rarely, if ever, recycled and most recycle centers are NOT set up to recycle plastic like this- is too small. My recycle center doesn’t even take plastic caps. So beads like this end up in landfills, and after rainwater and run-off do their work (if small animals haven’t aalready ingested them) eventually finding their way into our fresh water and oceans where they are ingested by sea life and we eventually end up eating it. We’ve got to start changing our use and consumer consumption of petroleum products (all plastic) which never breaks down!! So theoretically, these plastic beads maybe can be recycled...but the likelihood of finding someone to take them as recyclables is very small, practically nonexistent.I don’t say any of this to criticize your beautiful work... maybe making them with fine glass beads might be something to think about? 💞 L
Lisa Fladager glass beeds can be a danger, and you would need to sew them into little pouches and then sew the blanket out of rows and rows of pockets you can remove each pouch from when you wanted to wash it. If you use glass marbles you are probably better off sewing each marble into its own compartment so that the risk of marbles crashing together without enough cushioning is reduced. You could use a thin durable material for that, sandwiching beads as you go, and then use that either as an added top insert for on top of a thin blanket or a thick blanket in a uh blanket case (I don't remember the correct word for it right now, English isn't my first language).
I get what you were trying to say.... However shes making a blanket that would last years... its fleece, proving your thread held up it could last a lifetime! It would likely be sold or passed down not just tossed in the garbage.... I'd be right on board with you if it was for a toy the kid would break or grow bored of in a month or something.
Yes, I agree that the plastic beads are horrible. I'm using aquarium rocks for the one I'm making. $20 for a 25lb bag and all natural for the environment.

Probably not because the weight of the plastic beads creates heat
I just feel it relaxes my pressure points and makes me sleep better 😊
I would totally buy this for my son. I suck at sewing but love your channel!
mialatina you can do it. RUclips will teach you anything. I’ve been sewing for about a month now. And learned everything via online.

Can you make a video how to make a valentine box with box cover and free templates?I really need to make one
Do you include the weight of the fabric in the 10% body weight or just the pellets you are adding?
Sorry if I missed it, but what are the measurements you used for this blanket? Want to make one for my 7 yr old nephew. Thanks
Thank you so much for posting this.
Where do you get your pellets!? Cheapest I could find was $50 for 20 lbs
If you don't sew the bottom across til the very end, how do you keep the pellets from coming out of the bottom? Just with pins?
If making an adult sizes one, should I make the pocket sizes smaller or larger or can I keep the same dimensions you used for this one?
Do you think this could be made with more airy material so that it'll stay cool? I have POTS and overheat really easily
Use buckwheat hulls, they’re used in sobakowa pillows to stay cool and they’re heavy.
@@Tata-iu3fy can they be washed and dried if using the hulls?

Rosalinda Lozano She said how at about 1:25 in the video.
Whitney Sews she doesn't day how. she says you can wash it. My washer was damaged with the weight of a weighted blanket. That's why I'm asking. ;0)

I have the same shirt as you haha
😍😍😍😍
I understand the sewing parts but then you threw in math and Im lost. :\ Ill have to ask for help.
It’s easy math. You want to make a 7lb blanket that has 36 pockets just....
16 oz X 7 = 112 ounces of poly pellets. Divide 112 by 36 (# pockets) and you get 3.1. So each of the pockets gets 3.1 oz of pellets.
please sell me one. I'm not skilled enough to do this
Brandon DiPaola me to lol

Only thing i worry about is not being able to wash it.
You can make a cover for it that can be washed
Ugh I cant sew and I’m poor
Em português,??
Great, except for the plastic beads, which are horrendous for the environment.
They can be recycled. The issue with natural sources (such as corn or) is that they can aggravate allergies and they will mold if they get wet.
