You are such a good teacher, this is the most precise tutorial I have seen on weighted blankets. I worked in a forensic psychiatric facility where we used these to ease stress and to comfort those in crisis. Thank you for helping caregivers to provide this form of stress reduction to loved ones.
I've made 2 weighted blankets for my stepdaughter and her boyfriend before seeing your video. I literally just winged it and made the duvets cotton with a sewed on a flannel cover. I think they ended up being about 12-15 lbs each. Your video so descriptive, clear and to the point. I love the idea of a removable cover and have been wanting to make one for myself. Love your video! Thank you!
Thank you for this video. I volunteer for a charity and we made 9 different weighted blankets for the agency that oversees foster children. The pellets were very expensive, but the agency bought the pellets for us. It was for Christmas and we found out what each child’s favorite color and favorite theme. We bought fabric and made the blankets. The blankets were made just about our your video, except we did not do a duvet cover and we had about 2 inches around the perimeter of the blanket. Our charity just fills a need in our community.
@@nelsonwilliam1814 the Charity is still going strong. Right now we have been making tied quilts for a home for youths. This will be for Christmas. We haven’t made weighted blankets for a long time now, as people can buy them cheaply.
I make weighted therapy blankets for people out of my home. I have been making these for 8 yrs now. Very busy all the time... I also make lap pads, weighted snakes. weighted textured blocks all kinds of items... :) I absolutely love making items for people and get all the positive feed back.
Omg! These ribbons on the corners! Brilliant! Why I never do this?! Thank you very much for your videos, Laura! You explain very clearly, I'm not english-speaking, but I can understand all of you say. Love your channel! Good luck!
Made one years ago for my grandson who is on the spectrum. His weight has increased greatly, but he still uses it. I am making my adult daughter one now, just because she loves tones of covers and wants one. Thanks for the video.
I have been interested in weighted blankets for a while. They always looked so difficult to make. This video has filled me with confidence that I can do it. Thank You!
Laura, I loved your video for the weighted blanket. You made it look so easy. I have now sent for the book and am going to have a go at making one. I have nerve damage in my legs so am hoping this will help with the pain. Many thanks. I love watching your videos you are so clear with your instructions. Thank you.

It turned out great, she loves the washable cover. Best of all, it has really helped her a lot. Thank you for your fantastically thorough and clear explanations.
My 8 year old son has attention challenges and is a sensory child. We use a weighted blanket for him. Thank you for this tutorial. It is very helpful! I’d like to make his next blanket so I can personalize it a bit more for him. ❤️❤️
This is a very easy to follow tutorial. My grandma made me a "heavy" blanket when I was a child. I loved it then and still use it infrequently. Thanks for sharing!
Laura, thank you for covering this. It is going to fetch a lot of comfort to a lot of people. It is now on my next project list for my son who will absolutely love this. Watch you every week and all the effort you put in to teaching us is very much appreciated x
Last month, I made a weighted blanket for my grandchild who has been having sleep issues. She loves it. I used the poly-pellets as you did, but I made separate pockets, attached to them the inside of one of the outer fleece layers, then quilted both layers together to further secure the pockets. One of my children wants one now. I will definitely be using your channel method this time and your tip of adding batting to the pockets. Keep making your wonderful videos. Your channel is my favorite for sewing and quilting info.
I made a weighted blanket for my Granddaughter for Christmas. She is extremely shy and was looking to purchase one, told her Dad, and he and I figured out the measurements, I purchased the poly pellets on Ebay, we weighed out each 'pocket' and filled sturdy paper cups to pour into canning funnel attached to a cardboard tube from Christmas wrapping paper, worked well because I could reach the bottom without pellets getting stuck along the way. I used a heavy cotton for lining for both front and back, with her favorite fleece covering one side. She loved it!! Not as hard as I thought, but someone to help you does make it easier, and you have to be very careful that you don't sew over the pellets, or you will break your needle.
I'm going to use two vacuum cleaner extension tubes to put my beads in. I'm using Minky Cuddle on one side, and plaid fleece on the other side. I'm making it for my ex-husband.
I made a weighted blanket for a 2 year-old grandson with anxieties. I used two novelty fabrics that he would enjoy, one with a fun motif and one with a calming motif (night sky). He uses it as part of his calming practices and for nighttime sleeping. Thank you, Laura for this video. I really like the idea of adding batting to the squares.
I absolutely love your tutorials! I especially love this DIY Weighted Blanket tutorial, because my Grandson is Autistic. I've bought the Weighted Blanket book by, Susan Sullivan on Amazon, Lightening McQueen (his favorite) material, and the poly-pellets & poly-fil material to make him a blanket. I feel so confident now after watching your tutorial that I can finally make him a weighted blanket for his bed! Thank you so much, Laura!! Blessings~
I work for an etsy seller and finally made one for myself. I acually took a nap when I covered myself. I never nap. This process is easy but tedious, trust me I know! It can be done however. If you need a blanket at a decent price and will be homemade quality take a look at My three boys designs on etsy. Worth the look if you don't think you can sew one of these.
I had worked a long portion of my career with individuals who were diagnosed with autism. Weighted blankets work wonders. Custom made blankets are a wonderful option compared to the plastic ones I've seen. Thank you for this video!
I told my mom that I want to make one of these blankets a few months ago. The way you made yours in the video is exactly how I told her I want to make mine! I'm glad I had a good idea... Even though others thought of it before me! Lol
Laura, my daughter said the blanket she bought, works wonderfully! She has no pain from the Fibromyalgia! She said when she feels pain during work, she thinks of her blanket and can’t wait to snuggle in bed for relief! She said her blanket didn’t come with ties inside so the blanket shifts and is annoying. I’ll sew them inside for her. I plan on making yours for myself! Bless you for your tutorial!💖
Whenever I want to know what’s trending, you are my go to person. You are very thorough, easy to follow . Your sewing style to me, looks high end. Thank You for sharing your knowledge and skills!
I had ordered one for me 3 weeks ago and am hoping I can sleep better. Right after I ordered mine, my daughter said her oldest child was having lots of sleeping issues and disturbing her other sister as she crawled into bed with her in the middle of the night. Since they are so expensive to buy, I ordered pellets and made her an 11 pound flannel weighted blanket. She is sleeping soundly through the night now. 🙂. Love this video with the duvet effect, although sewing with cuddle fabric can be tricky. Thanks for great info. Will do it your way next time. BTW, my 16 pound Minky weighted blanket as well as my granddaughter’s 11 pound blanket washed and dried perfectly in my front loader washing machine. Anything more than 16 pounds would need to be at a Laundromat in their heavy duty machines - hence the duvet so that can be washed after untying the weighted section.
Laura, THANK YOU! I've wanted to make one for a granddaughter with ADHD. She'll love it. But I think I'm going to make it for anyone in the family who likes the extra security it makes them feel. You are so inspired and talented in deciding which ideas to show us and in designing your own unique approach. Just, bless you a whole bunch!!♡♡♡♡ Sue
I made my autistic grandson 2 of these, but I wish I'd seen this first. He loves the small first one so much he wouldn't let me take the pellets out for the new one. For him, they matter and I'm sure I'll be making more over the years using your method. The ribbons are such a good idea too.
Thank you Laura! Absolutely love you wonderful videos! Love your teaching style and also your hair lol! You very much resemble my sister and myself... we are rocking the hair! And you are rockin the quilt videos!

Thank you for posting this. I just had my daughter in law request a weighted blanket and was not sure how to make one. I always enjoy your videos, but this one will be put into use immediately. Thanks.
I was fortunate to try one years ago that weighed 50lbs & the fabric was similar to something woven from Mexico! I loved it! But I was 106lbs at the time & I LOVED it! It don’t know what was used for the weight. But wherever they got that 10%...maybe a study? May not be a one-size-fits-all Truth. *These are also great for those in long-term withdrawal of addicting medicines.

My grandson needed a weighted blanket to help sooth him when his anxiety peeked. The cost to purchase a pre-made blanket can run into the hundreds of dollars. His PT asked, if I could make him one. Up to that point, there was limited information out on how to make this type of blanket. Looking online, I not only saw $300 price, also saw what it looked like. From there, I made my guesstiment on poundage per length and width and made his blanket. It has truly help him. Since then, I made another for another child, and one for an adult. The bigger they are, the heavier they are. Common sence, right? The blankets are easy to make, as shown. They do work.

I made I made a king size with your directions, thank you. I was able to iron the top piece by folding over and over by halves and that helped make my rows without a ton of measuring. Then I just went and followed the creases with a yard stick to make my pencil lines. Without the duvet it’s actually chilly, which is great because I live in the tropics. I would make it smaller next time because it’s so heavy and I sleep alone. (Husband snores like a dinosaur.)

Thank you for your tutorial. I will be making one of these for my grand-daughter. On a side note, you look a lot like Flylady Kat. That's a complement. You sound like her too.
Wonderful topic, thank you for posting this video Laura. I've been debating making one for myself to help with menopausal sleep issues. Love the idea of the comfy fabrics you used. I had been planning to use recycled denim jeans in a raggedy-edge cathedral window style and adding pellets to each square for the weight. Your way is much simpler! Thank you for the tutorial, I will research to see if it would be helpful for my father who has Alzheimer's.
I would like to make one for myself. It might help with the pain of my osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia related problems. I might actually get a good night's sleep.
This is an awesome video! BUT (and there is usually a but) out of all these comments no one addressed the batting being added for the noise level. What kind/style of batting? How much do you put in each square? How do you get it distributed evenly,? The pellets are measured, how do you measure your batting?
wonder how much this project cost? I am having problems sleeping and now with he pandemia im not working therefore not making much money, many people swear by their weighted blankets and the cheapest I can find are almost 200 dollars... that is enough to give me insomnia! Love the way you explain the whole thing and I might consider making my own! where could I find the pellets? awesome tutorial! thank you very much!!
I personally feel like I agree, because it also makes sense to have the weight a little more evenly distributed, but I've never used a weighted blanket with pellets before. I'm interested in buying or making one for myself. Is there a square size that you'd personally recommend? 2-3 inches maybe? I suppose it also depends on the amount you're putting into each square, huh?
Love this video I work with adults with learning support and I am a therapist I used one of these last week and I was so impressed with the calming effect I plan to make one for my own centre where can I buy the book

For a bit of warmth, could you use a 2 batting sheets, one for top side of the fabric, and one for the bottom side, the same size as the overall inner pocket lininh? And then sew the piece together and flip it right side out?
Laura, you are an amazing teacher, YOU explain everything clearly.. I have one question how big is your cutting mat and where did you get it? Thank you for sharing..

I wanted to make one for my daughter and my two grandchildren. I live in southeastern Texas at the gulf coast. We really don have much cold weather but they definitely need weighted blankets. I was unsure about fabric that would be suited to our climate. Any suggestions? TIA.
My grandson is not autistic but as a 2 years old he is looking for some security in his bed and your excellent tutorial is going to help me make weighted blanket. Thank you! 😘
How do you keep the Cuddle fabric from stretching or distorting while you sew? Short of ironing on a lightweight fusible interface, I haven't been able to keep that from happening. Thanks for any tips you can give!
a few things to try #1 use bigger stitches (not too tight) #2use a walking foot #3do not let the fabric pull down, hold it up as you sew, helping it go under the foot. #4 use a larger foot, like a zigzag foot. Hope this helps
I'm confused about the weight you added for your blanket. Did you use 5 or 10 % beads? I love this idea and really want to make one. I've never heard about this before. Thank you so much for another wonderful project :)
Excellent information about general guidelines, construction tips, and referral to check w/your physician. I have been aware of this coping “tool” for nearly 20 years and am thankful to many medical & special education specialists who integrated this in our lives. Not everyone feels better w/these however, those that do get relief or get positive sensory feedback swear by them! I’ve known young adults who use them to ease anxiety and actually feel their nighttime sleep is more restful. The vests, and lap type weighted clothes do not use the same 10% of wearers’ body weight formula. So I would strongly caution making such items, especially for children & those with physical, emotional &/or mental issues, without getting the recipients ‘ medical professionals’ input. Often their PT ( Physical Therapist), OT ( Occupational Therapist), treating doctor(s) , etc..would be able to best advise the ideal weight an item should be or not be, even fabric selection can have a negative tactile implication. My experience has been that someone willing to make it for that person is welcomed by those professionals. And their professional input will only make that weighted item a safe and successful fit! Thank you Laura for this tutorial ~an awesome blanket idea w/the duvet!!
I had thought about making one just for my ex-husband, but now that I think about it more, I think I'll make one for my dad as well. He gets cold so easily and he aches, so maybe this would help. What do you think, Laura?
Also, another quick question. Where do you lay your fabric out to be able to mark it so well? I have trouble getting down on my hands and knees anymore, and I don't have tables or counters big enough to do it there. Any suggestions?
I am pretty new to sewing and I went online to look at the muslin fabric. There are so many different ones. Bleached, not bleached some of very very wide. What kind are you using for your blanket? Thank you!! I am wanting to make some for my granddaughters and daughters for Christmas..
What stitch length did you use for sewing the channels and then making the pockets for the pellets? I would want to be sure the pellets wouldn't shift through stitching.

Thank you for your tutorial. I will be making one of these for my grand-daughter. On a side note, you look a lot like Flylady Kat. That's a complement. You sound like her too.
Excellent tutorial! I’ve watched a few others but yours was just what I’m looking for! Thank you!
I son bought one yesterday and it was warm to me relaxing
Wonderful topic, thank you for posting this video Laura. I've been debating making one for myself to help with menopausal sleep issues. Love the idea of the comfy fabrics you used. I had been planning to use recycled denim jeans in a raggedy-edge cathedral window style and adding pellets to each square for the weight. Your way is much simpler! Thank you for the tutorial, I will research to see if it would be helpful for my father who has Alzheimer's.
please let me know how it works out:)
Such a top notch video! Very articulate and great explanation on every step!
Laura, Thank you for another wonderful video...Laura you have such beautiful hair.
just here to tell u, you look like a character, a beautiful one from movies or comic books!!!!! :)
5 inch squares are a little large. Floppy/shifting /noisy pellets are not as comforting. Smaller squares take longer but make a better result.
I would also like to know what square size would work better?
I loved your video. Thanks a lot! I wondering if you could make one of memory bears, dinosaur or something else?
What a great idea to tie the corners!
Thanks for this! Want to make a weighted lap blanket for mom and this was very helpful!
Love this video I work with adults with learning support and I am a therapist I used one of these last week and I was so impressed with the calming effect I plan to make one for my own centre where can I buy the book

I love your videos & am so jealous of your lovely silver hair. I have a niece & a good friends child both with etreme nonverbal autism as well as my best friends daughter who is mildly autistic who I'm now going to make weighted lap blankets for if their parents are open to using them.
Thank you
Fab video
I love my weight blanket
💓
For a bit of warmth, could you use a 2 batting sheets, one for top side of the fabric, and one for the bottom side, the same size as the overall inner pocket lininh? And then sew the piece together and flip it right side out?
good idea, thanks for sharing :)
These are great blankets. Love the one I made!
awesome, I'm definitely going to make it!!
hi Laura! This is such a great idea and really useful too. Love it "like a big hug" xo
Hi Laura and thanks a lot for this great tutorial! 😎🌸
Excellent Laura - how do you feel the dyi blanket compares to a bought one?
Laura, you are an amazing teacher, YOU explain everything clearly..
I have one question how big is your cutting mat and where did you get it? Thank you for sharing..
you can get it at the fabric store. It is rolled up in a big box. I found them beside the pattern drawers:)
Great video Laura!
I couldn´t live without my weighted duvet, although, mine has real chains instead of beads :) (I´m Autistic with ADHD)
That’s so cool! I’m thinking of making one too, chains sounds like a really awesome idea!
@@benstevens1575 for me, it was life changing! and it helped me to get off sleeping pills! who knew that 18kg could make such a difference :) it is hard to change and make the bed though ;)
I wanted to make one for my daughter and my two grandchildren. I live in southeastern Texas at the gulf coast. We really don have much cold weather but they definitely need weighted blankets. I was unsure about fabric that would be suited to our climate. Any suggestions? TIA.
WOW! Would make a very nice gift for someone, thank you for Sharing!!! Liz...
Beautiful!! I'm definitely try this ❤️❤️
Rocking out the beautiful hair!
My grandson is not autistic but as a 2 years old he is looking for some security in his bed and your excellent tutorial is going to help me make weighted blanket. Thank you! 😘
Awesome tutorial! I’ve been meaning to make one!
Interesting. You made it look easy
How did you decide the width & height of the blanket for yourself?
How do you keep the Cuddle fabric from stretching or distorting while you sew? Short of ironing on a lightweight fusible interface, I haven't been able to keep that from happening. Thanks for any tips you can give!
NightKitchenQueen a walikng foot helps.
a few things to try #1 use bigger stitches (not too tight) #2use a walking foot #3do not let the fabric pull down, hold it up as you sew, helping it go under the foot. #4 use a larger foot, like a zigzag foot. Hope this helps
Real cuddle fabric is not stretchy. Be sure your are not using stretchable fleece. :-)
I'm confused about the weight you added for your blanket. Did you use 5 or 10 % beads? I love this idea and really want to make one. I've never heard about this before. Thank you so much for another wonderful project :)
if you are 130 lbs you need aprox. 13lbs of weight. You can have a 1-2 lbs more. Keep the weight of the fabric in mind:) hope this helps
Often their PT ( Physical Therapist), OT ( Occupational Therapist), treating doctor(s) , etc..would be able to
best advise the ideal weight an item should be or not be, even fabric selection can have a negative tactile implication. My experience has been that someone willing to make it for that person is welcomed by those professionals. And their professional input will only make that weighted item a safe and successful fit! Thank you Laura for this tutorial ~an awesome blanket idea w/the duvet!!
thank you for your input, the more information the better:) thanks
Thank you oh, this was a very informative video.
Large tables, you can ask your library, quilt shop or church if they will let you use the tables and space
Great idea! Thank you! I will give that a try!
I am pretty new to sewing and I went online to look at the muslin fabric. There are so many different ones. Bleached, not bleached some of very very wide. What kind are you using for your blanket? Thank you!! I am wanting to make some for my granddaughters and daughters for Christmas..
You really can use anyone. As long as it is not too thin.
Thank you for making it easy 🤗😍
Hi..did you use your chalk line to mark this quilt?? If not how did you mark it so precisely? Great tutorial!!!
yes with a 48" yd stick:) you can find them in the hardware store
Thank you so very much...love your videos
Awesome! Thank you!! I will be making a few of them.
Another awesome tutorial 😊😊
What stitch length did you use for sewing the channels and then making the pockets for the pellets? I would want to be sure the pellets wouldn't shift through stitching.
I used a 2.75
❤ ty.
Excellent tutorial...thank you!
I make weighted therapy blankets for people I am SUPER busy all the time
i love to have one of these
Very interesting.
Thank you!! I am going to make one!!

Awesome tutorial. Thanks. :)
