I've made one of these before for a little one and a couple of tricks i learned were to use a tube, like from wrapping paper, to pour the pellets in because they can get caught in the batting and can break the needle if caught. Also, if making one for an adult gather all that material with the beads can get cumbersome. If you work from the middle out to the top and the bottom you don't have to fight with so much material. So once you sew all your vertical lines then sew a horizontal line across the center and start your first row there on either side and work out. Which means you will have to leave the top AND bottom hem open because they will both need to be opened. Also, I used a ruler to move the pellets down so as not to sew over them and to save my fingernails from snagging the fabric. thank you so much for your formula. it's hard to find one that has simple math for those of us that are mathematically challenged. lol! I loved making my little one his blanket. So much love went into it and he loves it!!!!
Thank you for making this! I've wanted to buy a weighted blanket for YEARS but never got down to it, and now I have a great tutorial I can use to make one or two blankets myself. I just have to ask my grandma to lend me her sewing machine and find those pellets! :D
bew , yes you can put them in the washing machine. I take mine to the commercial laundromat because those machines roll the blanket over and over. Home washing machines agitate and twist everything into knots. It’s actually worth spending the few extra bucks to prevent damaging the blanket. I’ve made several with aquarium rocks, just cull out the sharp ones, using the rounded ones.
Thank you! This was detailed enough to be very helpful, but not too long (like many vids on here are). And I appreciate the absence of background music! I imagine I'm not the only autistic looking at this vid, who finds background noise distracting & stressful. Great job!
I have found that material should be put through the laundry for shrinking. Then make the blanket. If you wash after the blanket is completed, the blanket does shrink and then it is puckered and the nice shape is lost. Wash and iron all fabric before starting :0
I like the size squares the fabric has. The Joann Fabrics near me don't have material with the large block pattern. How large are each block? I was thinking something like 8x8
I believe they are 6 by 6 because she said the fabric was 13 squares long and if it was 8 inch squares she would not have enough squares length wise to sew 11 with 2 squares left over 1 on each end.
PLEASE use safety pins or you are going to be saying ouch a lot. also you can do this as a quilt as you go blanket if you can't find quiet fabric that has squares on it you can cut 6 1/2 inch squares or 6 1/2 by what ever the width is and sew a whole row at a time. sew all fabric squares 1 main fabric 1 backing fabric right sides together 1 stuffing fabric (warm and wonderful batting is flat in cotton and polyester can be bought flat too or you can use a blanket cut up or use fleece squares. Love the cotton comes natural or bleached (I use natural) for us sensitive people{I can't stand polyester sensory problems}) sew on edge 1/4 to 1/2 inch from edge we will call this a seam flip backing fabric out and main fabric and batting over light press if you feel you need it start again only you will have the piece you just sowed in the middle... put 1 backing fabric right sides together 1 main fabric and 1 batting on top sew new seam sew as many squares as you want blanket tall sew 1 long edge and both short edges THIS IS WHEN YOU PUT YOUR POLY PELLETS IN...PUSH THEM ALL THE WAY INTO EACH POCKET SO THEY DON'T GET HIT BY THE SEWING NEEDLE.. MAKE SURE THEY DON'T SPILL OUT WHEN YOU MOVE QUILT RECTANGLE... YOU CAN SEW OPEN EDGE NOW AND EACH NEW OPEN EDGE AS YOU GO SO THAT AT THE END BEFORE YOU SEW ON THE BINDING(THAT IS WHAT THE EDGE FABRIC ON A BLANKET IS CALLED) YOUR QUILT WILL HAVE ALL CLOSED EDGES AND ALL OF YOUR HARD WORK WON'T END UP ON THE FLOOR next row sew as many main fabric pieces end to end to make a matching length rectangle and same number of backing fabric place bottom fabric rectangle you just sewed right side up place quilt rectangle on backing fabric main fabric quilt face up place main fabric rectangle on top of quilt rectangle face down place batting rectangle on sew edge flip out backing fabric and main fabric start again making more main fabric rectangles and backing fabric rectangles until quilt is as long as you want take either matching main fabric or backing fabric and make simple 3 inch by what ever your quilt ended up (30 inch, 40 inch, 90 what ever) add 3 inches to that length. so lets pretend you made a quilt 30 inches by 45 inches take 3 inch by 30 inch fabric strip of fabric fold wrong side to wrong side now you have a piece of doubled over 1 1/2 inch by 30 sew on edge of quilt raw edge to raw edge all the way down 30 inch length fold out press if you want if you pin make sure to take out pins don't iron over pins now do the same for long edge starting at end of new fabric edge flip new edge out iron. fold fabric to back sew by hand or stitch by machine sewing by hand will give you neatest edging but is not necessary... What would you say is an estimated price between buying the supplies and making it yourself compared to buying one? I want to make one but I want to make sure I'll actually save money. Some sewing projects I've done end up being more expensive then buying it online or in a store.
It looks to me that the cost of making your own weighted blanket is pretty close to the cost of an actual weighted blanket. I wanted to make my own but not if it's so close in cost.
Remmy Erickson they go for what I have seen anywhere from $150-$300. I just made one for $40! Like she said if you use coupons it’s well worth it and you can also use rice instead of pellets you just have to make the inside removable so you can wash almost like having a slip cover
So if I'm a 250 lb male mine should weigh 25 lb are you saying that that's too heavy if you're going to sleep with this on your bed thanks for your input Simon
Yes it is too heavy to sleep with. I would half the amount if you are going to use it all night. If this is just for helping those who need to decompress, the amount is better for 30 min sessions.
I don’t know why it’s too heavy for a 250lb adult. I’m 110 and have been using weighted blankets since 2003, well before they became ‘a thing’. I once had a 22lb Queen (add more lbs for larger blanket). Now I have a 15 lb twin (I like it better than my 16lb full) and an 11lb cat that sleeps on my shoulder. It’s the only way Ican sleep and the best way to decompress during the day (I double it up during the day, so 30lbs)
You are the only video I have found that uses batting with the pellets. I sort of don't like how the pellets always settle down to the bottom of the square. Does the batting help distribute the pellets more evenly within the squares? Is that why you use the batting?
If you really want to try and hope that a weighted blanket will help you sleep and lower stress/anxiety, I suggest you buy one. It's not just the weight. It's the material. Adding batting to it as per this video will totally change the temperature of the weighted blanket. And having the right temperature is everything. I bought the perfect one and slept almost 8 hours and more every night. IT IS WORTH THE MONEY! Every dollar of it! It is expensive. But, aren't you all worth it?! Getting a good night's sleep is priceless.

By using the poly plastic pellets in the blanket, what would be the washing instructions?
@@sylviadumais4898 great question!
Wow choosing a fabric that already has even squares is genius. Why didn't anyone else think of that? lol
Best video I’ve seen on how to make a weighted blanket so far! Thank you.

Just finished my first weighted blanket. I used aquarium rocks, and they worked great too, and better for the environment.
I wanna make one for my little brother,, uhh can you put those in the washer or?
What a great idea!

Genius idea! Less messy too. Im gonna use that advice when I get around to making one lol

This single guy who can't sew, still liked the video.
Very descriptive and informational!! Making one for a friend with an autistic child. ❤
I loved that tutorial. I wondered how you were going to get the pellets into each square. Brilliant!!!
Great tutorial, your fabric choice is awesome, thank you for sharing this.

are you washing the batting as well?
Easiest tutorial I've seen! Thanks for the idea of squares!!
Great tutorial on the weighted blanket. Thank you. My nieces daughter needs one. i would like to try it for my restless legs and for muscle spasms.
What are the instructions for washing this poly-pellet blanket? Thank you for this wonderful tutorial! It’s a beautiful blanket!
Well done, good tutorial.

❤thank you for the video now I wanna try to make one you made it look Fairly simple . What kind of sowing machine do you suggest? Or does it matter ??
Very cool. Thank you!
I was looking to crochet a weighted blanket but I’m thinking of dusting off my sewing machine after watching your vid. Thanks
5% is not enough. 10% is the ideal weight of blanket/person ratio
Makes sense 🙂

I have seen it with or without batting. Personally I like the batting for noise reduction.

I think it helps with noise and distribution. They still fall to the bottom when i lift it up, but even out when down.
@@alorablu8642 Thank You!
Can you wash this blanket in hot water and hot dryer?
In your supplies list, it says 1 package of quilt batting. which package did you end up buying?
how do you figure out # of squares?
Je ne sais pas coudre..... Pouvez-vous m'en envoyer une à Bruxelles (Belgium). Merci :)
What do you if you don't know the person weight? I want to keep it a surprise for Christmas to this person and asking may cause issues.
Can you wash this?
Yes you can and it's some what heat resistant as well I use a medium setting on the drier when I dry mine.
