If you saw the lecture by the designer of the GTR, its the car's weight that gives it traction in the curves. For a 3,900 lb car, its a missile (0-60 in 2.7 seconds, a quarter mile speed of 11 seconds and a top speed of 202 mph). You can't get that kind of performance in any vehicle without spending double the price of the GTR at a minimum. For the dollar, it's the best buy on the market hands down. Nuff said!

Lots to learn about this car engine and performance improvement, lucky you manage to explain clearly hihi.. its a great car, my son owns it.. really really awesome. Tq bro..😬💪
I wish they would just make a weight reduction special GT-R. In my mind, you just can't justify the cost. The new Corvette just dropped and once some tuning folks touch it we are some 8:1 compression pistons and a centrifugal supercharger away from 1000hp going through that transmission. Then transmission overhauls to make it good for a roots supercharger set-up holding 1000 ft-lbs of torque. Then turbo set-ups, etc. The GT-R is about to die, I'm a nissan fan boy from way back. I own a 1981 Datsun 280zx Turbo (auto )and 1990 240sx with an RB25DET installed. In 12 years you would think they learned something new and that's why NISMO's are $200,000, but Nissan is about Rogues and Versas, it's just not right.
Brilliant was that (brief) shot at 2:52 where pov is on your left shoulder = able to see the road and the rev counter ..loved it, wanted to see the roll on from it. (maybe you do, a bit to go yet)
So strange that the transmission acts in such a way. I wonder if it's a physical constraint or if it's just software. I only say that because it's been out for a decade and it's hard for me to believe that that logic where it goes through each gear individually before giving you the one you want wasn't programmed out. I have an APR tuned Mk7 GTI with a dual clutch and even in it's stock form, if I'm at 50mph rolling along in 6th and slam the throttle, it drops immediately to 3rd gear without going from 5th to 4th first and with the DSG tune, it's even quicker to do that. Very strange that the GTR has been around for so long and this hasn't been addressed.
@@truantray 🤔 BorgWarner designed the DQ250 dual clutch that's in my GTI and it has been rock solid. It will drop from 6th to 3rd on hard throttle input pretty much immediately and I've been running around 330 horsepower and around 330 lb ft through it without issue for a good while now. BorgWarner makes the GTR transmission too if I recall so I'm just surprised I guess that this is it's function. If it operates like this by mechanical design in this specific application, so be it, but I'm just surprised that if it's a software limitation that it hasn't been tuned out/altered by now. The last option is that it intentionally functions like that, but that just seems like a very strange choice.
Lets be honest a 0.26 drag coefficient is extremely impressive from a high horsepower car design to go very fast, has cooling vents, and aero. Most other cars in this category are around 0.34-0.36 which is 30-40% less than the category average.

@Jeffrey Cheng As it should, because it costs twice as much. The point being that at 100k, the GTR is an incredible car, though showing some age. At 200k, it's well below average.
On the topic of his complaint about the rear fenders, being that they attach/support the C pillars I bet it's structurally integral to its rollover safety rating. 🤔
RS 390 But a dated sports car already has computers all over, and in the last 10 years we saw huge improvement how these computers were tuned towards better drive enjoyment. If you want analogue, you need 90’s, or early 2000s car, or skipped right through the new ones.
I think the doors being alu is for safety as theres not much reinforcement in them. Rear fenders being in steel could also be for grip as its a front in engine. Most cars with carbon rear fenders have mid or rear engines from what ive seen?
I agree. 600hp is plenty good due to that AWD system. I have a 400hp rt charger with AWD and its waaaaay more fun than any of the higher HP cars ive been in. you can have alllll the HP in the world but it makes little difference if you cant get it all to the ground ;)
it definitely needs the jesko transmission you told me that its able to skip many gears in a really short time so that would be an improvement for the gtr (theoretical) btw: the jesko transmission vid was one of the best videos i ever saw about cars and i definitely watched more than 5000 hours until now
I think the flooring it in 6th issue has something to do with the clutch packs. 1 pack operates the odd gears and the other operates the even gears when upshifting, you have a clutch pack in standby for the next gear to be selected so it going through every gear on the downshift may have something to do with that.
Best looking GTR so far! Still wondering why they still put the brake calipers in the front part of the the wheels when competitors are putting them on the opposite side for better cooling.
Thats one of the reasons why i still love this car. Despite all that weight it still managed to keep up with the competition for almost 11 years. Chris Harris himself admitted that its hard to believe how the GT R does what it does despite that increased mass. But yes......nissan definitely needs to bring in a new GT R. Perhaps more lighter and faster. When launched in 2008 it was like way ahead of its time . But in 2019 other manufacturers have really went ahead in terms of technology.
Why not carbon fiber "fenders" (I assume you are referring to the rear quarter panels since you already said the front fenders were cf)? Um well because they are a welded and bonded part of the body.
Not necessarily, the R35 design has stated a few times now that the GT-R was specifically designed to be a heavy car so it could have high traction without the for need crazy aero packages to increase down-force. This was actually informally tested by Randy Pobst when he drove a stripped down GT-R for a racing event at Pikes Peak, he had numerous stability issues in testing with the stripped down GT-R due to this.
BigHeadClan bs, whatever else the problems were, being lightweight is never one of them. Why are all other racing cars so light? Or do f1 cars weight 2g’s also?
@@tomster7574 First your comparing full on race car (not to mention F1 cars) to road going cars, the legal and real world requirements between the two are vastly different. Second you need to understand that a high power light-weight car requires a lot of active aero simply to generate enough down-force just so they can get that power to the ground not to mention so they don't take off at higher speeds.... The fact the GT-R has little to no active aero and was spanking nearly every other super car under $300K for nearly 8 years is proof of that.
@@BigHeadClan dude, you seem to think physics cares about the cars you like about how it applies gravity to them. theeee only reason it may out perform any other car is the amount of turbo boost it has over them. simple, easy, so sad its not for you.

@@inspirice9844 in think that's absolutely right. When the rear quarter panels stayed steel or something heavier than carbon fiber, I was thinking, maybe that's for the weight! They probably made carbon fiber for that as well, noticed more slip in turns and put it back. Or another consideration is that body panels don't have to be just for show and aerodymanics. They can also assist unibody strength, which could effect the suspension.
@@inspirice9844 when it's built to be used for strength sure. When a car is getting riced out with a cheap carbon fiber hood...those tend to be weak and easily broken. That's most of the carbon fiber I've seen so I forgot when engineered well it can be for strength too.

It was a beautiful road called Huron River Drive. I used to ride my motorcycle up and down that road. 10 years later, I live in this boring flat anemic city of Houston, there's traffic in every direction, and there isn't a corner in sight. The largest elevation change is the speed bump. In a span of 1 year, 50 miles of I-94 was rebuilt near Detroit. In a span of 5 years, I-45 in Houston hasn't even finished the damn 1 mile stretch next to Nasa pkwy. ah... the 401k hwy of I-45.
Nismo branding. You pay for the badge! It's commom in high end manufacturers. And in 30 years a nismo badged GTR will worth more money. Silly rich stuff.
When you only need the engine to last for maybe 3 or 4 runs, you can get an insane amount of power out of almost all motors. The biggest limiting factor becomes block strength, after everything else is replaced and upgraded, and Nissan made a strong block.
@@cgunugc Most of those guys get a year or more out of their motors. 4 runs would barely make it through a test and tune for one event. Very few engines can hold 500hp per cylinder.
I'm guessing it's a software issue (rather than hardware) that causes the incremental down-shifting? If so, could this not be remedied with a computer and an internet (or something)?

If you saw the lecture by the designer of the GTR, its the car's weight that gives it traction in the curves. For a 3,900 lb car, its a missile (0-60 in 2.7 seconds, a quarter mile speed of 11 seconds and a top speed of 202 mph). You can't get that kind of performance in any vehicle without spending double the price of the GTR at a minimum. For the dollar, it's the best buy on the market hands down. Nuff said!

I think the Nismo should drop the rear seats like Porsche does in the 911

FlightRL Porsche/Audi/Vw has been getting away with that for years
What an AMAZING machine! Nissan has really got this car dialed in! Well done Nissan. Well done.
My 1999 Toyota Corolla with an automatic transmission will skip gears if I change my acceleration quickly. I am surprised by it as well.
Borg Warner is to blame. German DCTs are a plague in the entire industry. Getrag took 6 years to get the Ford DCTs working, with under 200hp.

On the topic of his complaint about the rear fenders, being that they attach/support the C pillars I bet it's structurally integral to its rollover safety rating. 🤔
Perhaps a dated sports car known as a computer may still feel more analogue than a new one.
Facts. This is absolutely true
RS 390 But a dated sports car already has computers all over, and in the last 10 years we saw huge improvement how these computers were tuned towards better drive enjoyment.
If you want analogue, you need 90’s, or early 2000s car, or skipped right through the new ones.
Ever meaning there will NEVER be one faster. What an age to live in to witness so many evers in history.
If I had that kind of money I'd get a 2020 RS6 + a gym bag full of money instead.
Yup, true.
Educating since day one ❤😘
it definitely needs the jesko transmission
you told me that its able to skip many gears in a really short time
so that would be an improvement for the gtr (theoretical)
btw: the jesko transmission vid was one of the best videos i ever saw about cars and i definitely watched more than 5000 hours until now
I think the flooring it in 6th issue has something to do with the clutch packs.
All that carbon fibre... yet much of the body is still made from steel. 3900lbs is more heavy than most mid sized family sedans.
It is heavyier than some full sized SUVs
Um well because they are a welded and bonded part of the body.
wtf was with the McLaren gang?!
Probably one of those touring events Mclaren hosts and invites owners and potential buyers
Interesting video. Thanks for the information it's awesome. Cheers
It would’ve gone faster if they put all the same technology in the original smaller lighter body of the skyline
Yeah except the Skyline chassis provides the crash safety of a paper sheet. So it would never pass regulations.

Double the price of a regular gtr and barely lighter. A mclaren lt models are a full 100kg lighter than already a really light supercar to begin with
I honestly wondered if losing more weight hurt other things like traction?
@@DENicholsAutoBravado The designer for the R35 believed that weight = more traction, so that philosophy will be around for until the R36 (if it ever becomes a thing).
@@DENicholsAutoBravado Isn't carbon fibre 10 times stronger than steel?
@@inspirice9844 when it's built to be used for strength sure. When a car is getting riced out with a cheap carbon fiber hood...those tend to be weak and easily broken. That's most of the carbon fiber I've seen so I forgot when engineered well it can be for strength too.

2.5 sec over what lap time? Context?
I find it crazy how drag racers get 3,000+HP to the tires out of that V6.
