All rights to this production belong to Nat Geo. I respect their creative property, but this video isn't able to be viewed by the public in its purest form. The DVD was produced in limited numbers and isn't in production any longer. I upload this with respect to Nat Geo as I feel this should be able to be seen by the world, as it is truly a fantastic documentary. (Incorrect exhaust note aside.)
I am NOT monetizing this video, any ads seen following or prior to this video are placed by "RUclips" and I have no control over this.
I upload this for all GT-R fans to enjoy in its purest form. I up sampled to 1080p and corrected visuals and removed distracting foreign subtitles. Any tearing or visual effects are all original to the production. I went to great lengths to track down this documentary (2 Years) and make the corresponding updates to share to the world.
NAT GEO PLEASE DON'T STRIKE MY ACCOUNT. I love this video and I want the world to see it.
Anyone watching this and thinking "I'm watching this to make sure my future car is built right" lol
me lol
Keep it up
no wonder the GTR is so brilliant the factory alone is a marvel of human engineering big respect to Nissan and Japan
Love the GTR Huge Respect to everyone in Japan .
I'm a Nissan GTR Master Certified technician. I worked and serviced on many many GTRs between 2009 and 2014 . Awesome car.
I definitely appreciate you guys. I've had mine in the shop a couple of times for some breakdowns. (None the fault of the car) and the Master Techs that took care of me were top notch.
I've blown open an injector. Previous owner used, used injectors. You can blow air with your mouth through it. Flex fuel sensor shorted due to previous owner installing poorly.
Then I blew my transmission up last summer.... 🙄. 5th gear stripped 1/3 the teeth off and the Synchro was destroyed.
Great documentary. I got my gtr last weekend. It was my poster car back in 2009.
Enjoy it! It can be frustrating at times. Finicky car.
Congratulations on getting your dream car
Congrats to your GT-R! I bought my 2014 GT-R back in 2015! I think the car is awesome!
Congrats my friend.
Congrats, on that. I came across a good good deal on my dream car in 2015. It's a great feeling
The GTR is a phenomenal car. Even the older models when it was still Skyline. My favorite.
Wdym even the older models? The older models (specifically the R34) are way better than R35+
@jmathis2aug In what regards? Nostalgia? If based purely on performance. None of the GT-R of old touches the R35.
@@Mikey6048Go drive them all and you'll see why. The R35 is a driving appliance. It takes much of the skill out of the equation. Your mother could get in it and drive it fast! maybe that's the point....I've owned the R34 GTR and an R35 at the same time. I drove, and pushed them both all the time. The R34 was exciting, and fun, yet could be a calm daily driver. The R35 felt like a Maxima that was stupid fast. In other words, boring. If I were to own another, I'd get an R32. It has almost the same drive train as an R34, but it's significantly lighter and by far the most fun to drive. I guess this is kind of happening to most cars nowadays unfortunately..... One of the reasons older cars are going through the roof in value. The 35 is a great car, but "the best GTR" is debatable.
@@LordHolley I own one. In stock form sure. But when modified it's a completely different animal.
I'm a 1969-1989 Skyline fan myself. I love the R32/33/34 very much, but those first two decades are my favorite! Like the Silvia. I love the S13/14/15, but I absolutely want an 83' 240RS Silvia. The Group B Homologation car. Drive that one & listen to it on Gran Turismo, then check out real pics & video. Of that Silvia and the first two Skylines ( and the Fairlady, Sunny/210, Gloria, Laurel, Cedric, Cima, the President, & of course the 510. So many glorious vehicles from Datsun/Nissan, and every Japanese auto manufacturer from the beginning up until 2004 ( but especially from 63'-99') 🌅
The best documentary I watch about GT-R
I absolutely love this documentary.
I wish I could afford one. I’m most struck by the number of times the Nissan employees used the word “customer.” They really bought into the focus: “make the best car for the customer” and not “make the best car.” That’s a significant difference. Others may make fast, but uncomfortable, cars that you can barely climb into. I respect what Nissan did here.
Bro get 2010 they go for 50- 60k that pretty affordable. Don’t fall for dealership mark ups.
I wouldn't. I would only buy a 2012 and newer. The DBA has updated transmission components, and believe me. It's worth the extra costs instead of replacing it later.
@@Mikey6048 never ever buy first generation of a new car model, even a 600~HP GTR
@@kamenriderozai8403 especially the GTR
R35 is the best peformance, production supercar, it's literally what they wanted to be, a supercar for everyone.
Everyone in the factory that even just for a moment touches a gtr seems so proud to be there and thats cool to see. ❤ I sat in the drivers seat of first 2009 m/y GTR off the line myse!f and can agree it was an honor to even be allowed near the machine.
Watching this after the Carlos Ghosn debacle is hitting different too.
Best than most American Cars!!!!
Love this. Incredible engineering.
Nissan has always been slept on
I have a 2015 Nissan NP300 4x4 Pick up and a 2008 Elgrand 4x4 with the VQ25 Engine. And i like it.
I used to work a Nissan plant and I remember when they started back making these cars. They brought one to our plant for us to see before heading to a car show in ATL. Someone put diesel in it instead of gas. Luckily they realized that before they crunk it up. I was wondering why they were pushing it in the plant lol.
Can't believe they used gt4 footage to show an old skyline
This was from a giant TV network wasn't lol
Nat Geo tried to have accuracy. But they aren't enthusiasts so they got some things wrong.
My Dream car 🥰
Carlos. What a character he turned out to be.
Why is everyone mentioning this? What happened?? What'd I miss??

It puts a smile on my face
Every time .
Also it’s now a varis gtr
Love it !
Super jealous! Same year as mine. It'll be 3 years for me in January.
I want the Kamikaze-R kit so badly. I just dropped 16k$ for a ShepTrans build because I blew 5th gear apart a few months ago.... 👀🤦♂️.
I might post a short about it and show 5th and the input shafts.
@@Mikey6048 upgraded transmission nice!
That’s what I want next but I will have to wait since that body kit ran about 20k
Wore you racing a lot ?
Or doing launches ?
Nope, just driving to work. Semi pulled in front of me. Dropped to 5th. Gave it her all to get away and 5th Gear let out.
Look into Chinese body kits , you can prob find the same with really good finish for a fragment of that price.
@@fouadS31 I have but I'm sadly a purest.... 😔. I have to have legit parts even though it's probably the same quality.
at 1:40 that sound in background is a sound of lexus LFA come on guys xD
Amazing car ❤
The best on the world's
a 45 minute advertisement for Nissan!! Brilliant marketing!!
Beginning of this sounds like Chevy today.
after you tune these cars with new turbos, you smoke anything porsche can make.
Ghosn will always have my respect!!!
Hihi that sounded like an Lexus LFA!
The Skyline was in response to Toyota Supra I believe. Both were really phenomenal cars, This GTR at 62,mph in 2 .8 and at around 100k dollars!!!. Is receiving the best of development advances and knowledge. Ghosn saved Nissan, started this project, he deserves credit but will never receive it.
Because he created enemies by cutting off mafia supply chain, and spareparts. Also corruptions and collusions within companies that plague auto industry in japan. Some of the high officials are also the owner, or connected to some sparepart suppliers.
Pretty much the reason why toyota, honda, and other japanese brands got left behind in EV except nissan, where Carlos forced them to make Leaf. Now Nissan is trying to erase Carlos achievement
The R35 came out 5 years after the MK4 Supra ended production.. what. Why would nissan make a car in response to a car that's no longer in production, for half a decade?
@@SupraSavHe said the Skyline as in R32, R33 & R34. The R32 Skyline GTR was developed in 1989. You are referring to the R35 GTR which is not a Skyline.
The first skyline predates the supra by a decade
I will start working on the other documentaries to get them sorted in the coming weeks. Current comment timestamp Nov 9, 2023.

I am still waiting to find a totalled GTR so I can build a one of a kind car. And call it. The Nissan 370Z Nismo-R S-Tune. GTR drive train under a 370Z nismo. Kind of like the Juke-R
Demon or GTR? Which one would you pick? I pick GTR
Own a GT-R. Murdered several Hellcats and 2 Demons.
GT-R all day.
As old as the R35 is at this point, it’s absolutely still an incredible machine and a true testament to Japanese know how and engineering. I’ve driven am R35 and to this day it remains the most amazing car I’ve ever had the pleasure of driving 👌🏼
Yes R35 is timeless
Ok buddy... whatever you say...
@@johnnyjohnathon7381what do you mean? My sentiments about the car itself or are you doubting that I drove one?
@@rogermoreno1152 which ever one offend you more.
@@johnnyjohnathon7381 neither offends me, it’s just confusing since you don’t wish to clarify 🤷🏻♂️
0:14 why did they use lfa noises in the intro lmfao
Yea it's my biggest gripe. Good ears.
Is it just me or do they keep using LFA sounds randomly?
I don’t care what people say about the R35 being produced too long and “not keeping up” (even tho it still performs to par). It has and always will be my dream car. As incredibly tempting the 911 gt3 is now and others, they just will never replace the love I’ve always had for GTR
I hope they keep producing them so badly cos I still can't afford one.
pretty insane that carlos was like a saint and a saviour back then, suddenly he became the most wanted person by the interpol, smuggling himself into music equipment and hides in his home country
Carlos was the escape goat by corrupt nissan officials.
I believe they framed him. I bet they can't stand the fact that a non Japanese saved Nissan.
I feel the same way.
What happened? I know Nissan is yet again on the verge of bankruptcy, but I didn't know there was/is some controversy/legal incident that caused this latest downturn.
@@moogle68 It's worth a Google. Seems like BS and he was used as a scapegoat for corrupts executives.
The GT-R is the best car ever
I don’t think no car made anywhere else in the world. Any price shines I can’t afford one what is absolutely a bargain in comparison
Every successful car company should do this at least once per generation: take a handful of your best, most passionate people and set them to designing the very best car they possibly can, with no worry over cost. Even if they can't sell the finished product at a profit, all the parts and systems that get improved in the process will more than make up it over time.
Great documentary I enjoyed watching, the GTR is a true legend a lot of people behind this success unfortunately its 2024 and Nissan announced that it the last year for this legend farewell GTR 💔
It's a mâle car...
Ever since laying my eyes on the GTR for the first time I knew this was going to be my favourite car. Many years have passed not even Tesla can beat this!
An absolute ethereal experience. I never broke gaze from watching. Elite craftsmanship, education, and fun wrapped in an amazing lecture. Kudos to Nissan.
'This car is Male, not Female' Where do i sign to own one?
I'm a Corvette guy, but I wouldn't mind having a GTR in my Garage. I agree, after all these years, it's still a work of art.
I own 2008 GTR R35 bought 2019 already has 52k km, stock engine, and no fault, still going until today, fast, comfort, without worry faulty! perfect!
21:15 It was 4 engineers in 2009, now its 13. How times have changed.
Be nice if Silvia could be reignited I have an S13 Q's imagine a EV version?
Oh please no, I don't want an electric Silvia. It needs to stay as a light FR sports car.
The overall styling is so cool and, well, timeless. In 20 years from now I believe it will still look awesome. If I had the bucks this car would top my list. Nothing against the competition (they reference Porsche more than once in this video) however you don't see as many GTR's on the road in comparison - not even close - and it's the exclusivity that I value with all the other good stuff this machine has to offer.
Exactly why I love it
Episode aired Nov 2012 stating Nissan was on its knees 13 years earlier with outdated cars, so they brought Carlos Ghosn in to fix it.
11 years later, he's in a box on a plane somewhere on the wanted list, Nissan still makes the GTR 15 years later and....they're in trouble yet again.
The only thing i dislike about the gtr is that its an automatic gear. I like manual transmission machines😢😢
Technically it is a manual. Just minus the 3rd pedal. It's called an automated manual. Instead of you operating the clutch. It's computer controlled. It may sound like an automatic, but it honestly isn't.
Thats what i dont like. I like the fully manual with the 3rd pedal. It gives me a sense of control.
@@Lalmalsawma_C I can appreciate that.
Ah I remember watching this back when it aired on NatGeo, great times.
R35 and Godzilla are 2 of the best looking and performance cars ever.
Great Documentary Japanese Automobiles hold a special place in my heart the Japanese are fantastic master builders and engineers. and the design language is always cutting edge.
It amazes me that comparatively few people seek out made in Japan vehicles. Their quality is on another level even compared to the same company's vehicles made elsewhere. Nissan is probably the most stark example of this.
In March 2024 I found a beautiful 2019 Nismo 370 one owner with 19,000 MI. I imported the car from Canada to Tampa Florida. The original owner took such good care of this car and upgraded to a GTR. I knew nothing about the platform whatsoever and I just needed a change from the Dodge Challenger. The literal moment that I sat in the car I smiled ear to ear. I felt like I was in my own personal rocket ship and to this very day I still feel like I get in a cockpit. I see a GTR someday in my future this car is fascinating. My 370 is a standard 6-speed, and she pulls in every gear. I've never had so much fun driving a car. I can't even imagine what the GTR must be like.
Best car out of Japan. Toyota wishes they had the balls to build this.
Best car in the world🫶🏽
1:40 this is definitely not the sound of a GTR 😂
Correct. It's the Lexus LFA. I mentioned that in the description. 😂
@@Mikey6048 ahaa cool cool 👍
what are u on about . that is the sound of the gtr . u havent been in the automotive world long enough havent you ?
@@DRsx4 Actually it's not. That is the LFA. National Geographic has stated they had the wrong exhaust clips a couple times in this documentary, back in the day.
@@Mikey6048 My ears must be tripping. I thought they used sound from Ferraris with modified exhaust or an F1 car for some reason since that's what I guessed the average casual viewer would be used to. [Generic race car sound to give the fast feel] Crazy to think they used a nearly-rival Japanese supercar sound
36:26 Lmfao.... Most tire shops now days use nitrogen instead of air. "Unstable" is nonsense really. However normally air does have a higher content of Hydrogen, and thus Water. It also changes pressure more under different temps. Normally as the tires heat up, the pressure rises, Nitrogen tires change less.
0:24 "Affordable price" Where?????
It used to be relatively affordable.
Love GT-R, its 4WD drive train and suspensions are very capable on the road.
I will drive one of these beautiful cars before I die 100 percent.
My mate from school has just got his back and every time he drives past me I see the smile all over his face and I can 100 percent believe why he absolutely loves every time he drives the thing just the sound of it gets me I love how they sound even standard
The best car in the world 🙏🏻👏👏👏👏
This is my 2nd Dream car got the 1st one already I know you will all laugh at me 19 Sti limited in 2003 when I was in high school my buddy bought a brand new or maybe leased idk anyway when I heard the sound of the 3inch catback he put on it and everything else he did I was like one day but GTR is 2nd I just can’t see spending money on a car that’s as much as a house even tho it’s probably the cheapest super car out there?
You deserve 1 come on
As a kid in the USA who grew up playing video games playing with Nissan gtr”s his whole childhood this makes me want one even more .
I can’t get over the constant LFA exhaust sounds overlaying the gtr 😂😂
Agreed. It's basically the only issue.
Exactly what I just heard at 1:40 , I was like wait a minute.
LFA can’t compete.
One of example of Japanese technology its so Impressive 👍 😍
I feel Sorry for Nissan. Carlos Goshn single-handedly turned around the company from its ruins and gave cars like GT-R, Patrol and Leaf. And then they Sued Carlos!! Who knows what else might have produced with Carlos on board!!!
I can understand why LFA worth almost 4x time when come out
Please keep making this beauty for eternity!
I love the fact that everything is aluminum unlike nowadays half engine is plastic
The fact that car companies are still measuring trunk space by how many golf club sets can fit, is freaking hilarious.
i go by the bodies
i can't believe they saw Godzilla and recorded him for 45 minutes without getting burnt alive or stomped on
Not to be somehow, just the documentaries alone will grow your channel to great lengths. I watched the entire GTR doci next up lfa
Crazy to think almost every generation of car enthusiasts has their own GTR.. it really is a hall of fame without a doubt
20 billion debt to a 2 billion profit in 2 years??..and that wasnt going to raise suspition??😂😂
I love the use of Top Gear footage when Jeremy raced public trans across Japan in a red GTR. Absolute phenomenal car.
then not for you, you are too big. I'm 173 perfectly moulded into it and mine is also auto, imo the manual doesn't suit it so old fashioned. 😊
The part everyone missed is Renault's interest in not only Nissan and throwing their man Carlos into the fray when the opportunity arose, but also the ties to Mitsubishi's Weapons Systems in the Defense side that the French were coveting as well. Denying the charges against Carlos doesn't equate to proof of innocence either, and desperately getting smuggled out didn't help in his cause. His smugglers from the US are in deep doo doo by the way.
Why is everyone mentioning this? What happened?? What'd I miss??
That's crazy theory, don't you think Japan government would stop mitsu and others first? Stop the bs, it's purely because nissan and mitsu were almost bankrupt
@lucky889s9 that's why Carlos is getting evicted from his 30 million mansion in Beirut that Nissan has provided for him? That contract expired 4 yeats ago when he was arrested and fired. But get this, he's been 'squatting' on that mansion for the past several years even though Nissan no longer pays his rent, and he hasn't been paying either, now his own government is kicking him out. I guess you may understand the real story real soon when your hero is homeless.
@@rikidozan93 several years? Carlos was just arrested and fired from Nissan in late 2018. You missing the point here. Nissan accused him of embezzlement of company assets and purchases. But all the property is under Nissan name. If anything, Nissan can sell with profit if the value has increased. If it's about taxes, it's between the government and him, not Nissan. So what charges are Nissan accusing him for, really?? Because he is a high profile and successful gaijin?? For turning nissan around?
@@lucky889s9 Mitsu going 'Bankrupt' is a funny joke. Do you even know how big of a company Mitsubishi Group is? 😅
best 15 year old car you can buy new today lol
Yeah he was arrested in 2018 for financial misconduct etc with the Nissan company and escaped from Japan in early 2019 back to Lebanon
It's coefficient of drag is average. Most cars have a .25 to .30 Cd.
It's low for a supercar. Your average daily driver doesn't need drag-inducing downforce, so they focus on minimal drag.
Supercars on the other hand, need downforce for fast cornering since they're light. The GT-R R35 is heavy enough to not need to be concerned about this.
The GTR is hardly a gamble for Nissan, they've been making it for years. I test-drove one, and loved the experience but decided the depreciation was going to be more frightening than even the performance. I went with the Mercedes C63 AMG Black Series, a superlative car that lost very little over my three years.
Since when does a 100k car become the "average mans" car? At that price, 100k or 140k are about the same and you can afford a wide number of super cars. This car is "mass produced," thereby making it more accessible. I would argue that being mass produced could drive the price down to the 60-70k range with a few trade-offs, making the car more accessible. But to keep the mystic around the car and to profit from them, they will not. I'm not a fan of the design, but it's a real nice car, one that this average man can not afford.
Ultimate dream car of mine. Sadly they will no longer produce this monster after Oct 2024.

It may not look like the typical supercar, it's an incredibly well balanced machine.
Pretty amazing when you consider that this cast aluminum block is now being built in 2500-3000hp levels while domestic vehicle's require an aftermarket block. The rest of the drivetrain is the same. Maybe a 300m gear here or there but, just bulletproof.
What an #Exclusive upload! Thanks for the UNDENIABLE insight absolutely #GnarlyDavidson
They need to just make a newish version of the 300Zx mix the 80s and 90s designs, for something a bit smaller, less weighty, and utilize design input from the delorean HP 1000 Give consoomers the Hyudai N vision 74 of the 300 ZX. and make it hydrogen fuel cell based.
Is the red gtr clip taken from top gear?
I believe so.
The nismo is way over 650 k in australia 😂
Ridiculous. It's the last chance to make high profits before R36. Which worries me about the price
Nissan really left the 90's in poor form. In like a lion, out like a lamb. A very boring, lethargic lamb.
