My sanborn 30 gal oilfree compressor since day one. Would start up fill up but when needing to start with it would just bog then trip the circuit breaker of the house. Of every time i needed more air to work i have empty the tank and start from empty. Now after all this time it will not make it to cut off b4 triping the breaker. Check value is ok. Pressure switch system functioned normally. Only things i could think of was the wire gauge difference between the outlet cord and motor leads, motor has thinner wires, or the motor is self. This video was helpful about the capacitors.
@@outdoorpowertech7738 Perfect, thank you. I'm about to do the same. Changed unloader valve, check valve, dismantled manifold and pressure switch, but the problem seems to be the start capacitor. I don't like throwing parts, but the process of elimination..... Thanks again.
The first capacitor you replaced was the run capacitor. The second one was the start capacitor. If the motor was starting then shutting off, than the problem was with the run capacitor.
This is a great video and helped a lot but having the capacitors mixed up threw me off and almost trashed my compressor motor after it didn’t start when I swapped out capacitors!
Thank you soooo much for posting this. This is exactly what was wrong with mine. I ordered these capacitors from amazon and your video gave me the confidence to replace them. It is working like a dream now. 🙏🏼🙏🏼Thank you!🙏🏼🙏🏼
Yes very much thank you! For the detailed video. I know now for sure it's my start capacitor, I to got one given to me. Now the only problem I have is the ordering from Amazon...I'm not savey with all of that online stuff, just barely got a PayPal account and that was a lot of back and forth to the bank all and all I want to get into it ,so I guess I just will get one of my nephews or nieces to walk me through it..lol.thanks again.
The capacitor with a plastic housing is always the start capacitor (the most dangerous one) it's in a plastic housing so when it pops shrapnel doesn't fly everywhere.
Do you still have this compressor? Any chance of getting the info on nameplate of compressor motor? I've got a Craftsman compressor with a start & run capacitor. The run capacitor is the same as yours, hoping maybe start capacitor is also. Don't have the old one, looking to order the replacement. Thanks
I have very similar 240 volt compressor about 20 years old! I do not see any marks on either of the two capacitors that identify the "polarity" of the start or the run capacitor? My quest is that it doesn't matter since its AC current?
How can you tell which capacitor goes in which spot? I have a craftsman with a weg motor and the start capacitor keeps overheating. I'm wondering if they were installed backwards by a previous owner.
this was really helpful, thank you for posting. i have a question. how do you figure out what run capacitor you need if you buy a compressor with only the start capacitor on it
I just bought one with what looks like the same engine and I think it might be wired 220 when I put a plug on it it had almost no power at all trying to figure out how to wire in 110 or if I should try out the 220
Amazing video im gonna try to replace the capacitor. I have a Weg w56J 0.5hp single phase motor, but only has one capacitor, how i know if its the run capacitor or the start capacitor? Im worried because every time i connect the motor the house voltage drops from 120v to 80v and moment later backs to normal. I think this isnt normal.
i dont mean to be offtopic but does someone know a trick to log back into an instagram account..? I was dumb lost the login password. I would appreciate any help you can give me.
@Santana Malcolm Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm trying it out atm. I see it takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I have an old (probably 18yrs old Porter Cable air compressor) It has an AO Smith motor. It trips the breaker. Just took off the front facing capacitor housing. The capacitor has no marking on it at all making this a problem. Any suggestions??
thanks for taking the time to reply. I found the serial # on the motor also says Type K Did not see a model #. I think Porter Cable deliberately omitted the label on the capacitor. I can call the company that bought AO Smith on Monday. Maybe they can identify it.@@outdoorpowertech7738
indeed, I suspect PCable wants to either force you to buy the part from them or replace, Do not see a model #, serial # on motor...@@outdoorpowertech7738
I see a lot of videos with compressors like yours and others with Craftsman type that are having this issue. I was inspecting my Craftsman 30 gal 6 hp that’s about 20 years old and it doesn’t have any caps. Why is that? Also, don’t use a 14 Ga extension cord cause it will cause your breaker to pop as well. Need to handle at least 15 amps.
My compressor sounds like it's not getting enough power. It tries to start up but instead of fully powering up, it is weak and wobbly and never gets up to full power/speed. It also heats up like crazy. Sometimes after multiple tries to start it up (with a foot pedal), it will come on. It used to fail to start up only once in a while. It has gotten worse over time. Are these the symptoms of a failing run capacitor? (The air compressor has only 1 capacitor.)
My compressor builds up to approximately 50psi and the motor begins loading up and slowing to a stop. Do you think the motor is weak or is this possibly a sign of something else.?
Check valve possibly failed or the bleeder has failed by not taking pressure off the head thereby locking up your motor? Other possibilities maybe a bearing failure. But try and disconnect the pump tubing at check valve at try and start motor if it runs the it’s probably your check valve .
If you ever take a capacitor out and loose it before ordering another its almost impossible to find the right one again.A larger value will always work but not a lesser value. The trouble is getting one to fit the cover. Was you close by when your old compressor blew up? I've seen a few videos like that lately which has me more concerned about air compressors. One guy spent 3 months in the hospital because a tank blew up close to him. ruclips.net/video/KVP_A7eGYxw/видео.html And this one launched the compressor way into the air finally landing in a swimming pool. ruclips.net/video/4u8GGCqq-4U/видео.html
I'm going to do mine now but my only question is... is there a way to tell which one is the START and which one is the RUN ? I guess it doesn't matter but I was just curious. It may also be a stupid question... ha ha. Thanks.
This is definitely the best video I've seen, keep up the great work
thank you sir , All I needed was confirmation that the polarity didn't matter , awesome video Sir
Incredibly helpful. Thank you for being clear and patient in what you do.

So did you change the capacitor(s)? Did it work? Problem solved?
Yes, I changed both capacitors and fixed my issue

Great work. I have watched a ton of viedios but yours is the very first that explained how and what was the problem. Thanks.
Awesome. You gave me enough information to find what I needed. Thanks

Excellent demonstration worked for me!
Good deal
Thank you my compressor just started doing the same thing and I figured it was the capacitor but you confirmed it
The higher voltage capacitor, 300+V, is the Run capacitor. The lower voltage, 165V, is the Start capacitor.
Good Video
They Should Have a Cover Over the Terminals in the Capacitor Plates!
The capacitor with a plastic housing is always the start capacitor (the most dangerous one) it's in a plastic housing so when it pops shrapnel doesn't fly everywhere.
So the the capacitor has no positive or negative it doesn't matter which way I hook it up ? I got free compressor theirs 3 wires 4 tabs ?
Correct

Yes your correct, no polarity
Thanks for the confirmation!@@outdoorpowertech7738
Thanks for your time outdoor very helpful

Thanks for this video! The replacement run capacitor you have listed has three electrical connections instead of two. Will it still work?
I got a motor but without the capacitors motor seems to be good what can be done

I’m sorry without markings it would probably be unsafe to guess. You can probably look up the model and serial number and look up a parts list online
thanks for taking the time to reply. I found the serial # on the motor also says Type K
Did not see a model #. I think Porter Cable deliberately omitted the label on the capacitor.

Most likely, they like doing stuff like that to make it hard on us

Hi can I upsize my air compressor start capacitor 378-455 MFD/125V to 400-480 MFD/125V part?
I see a lot of videos with compressors like yours and others with Craftsman type that are having this issue. I was inspecting my Craftsman 30 gal 6 hp that’s about 20 years old and it doesn’t have any caps. Why is that?
Also, don’t use a 14 Ga extension cord cause it will cause your breaker to pop as well. Need to handle at least 15 amps.
The capacitor on the craftsman 6 hp 30 gallon air compressor are in the back cover of the motor which is on the opposite side of the fan.
How do you know which one is the starter cap? N which one is the run cap?
by the color the silver is starter n the black is run
Silver is run, links are in my description

I need help, which capacitor is better for air capacitor 3hp, 100 litre
On wich stand u need to put the meter to test the capacitor??
Good video, be wary of the micro fairies. 😉
I got that too 😂 good video though bud 👍🏻
Classic! 😂 Awesome video though
didn't have to take both screws out.
Thanks for sharing u r expertise, God Bless u. Have a wonderful Xmas new year.Hanif

Thank you. This was my problem too.
Hello great video what IS the HP AND RPM OF ELECTRIC MOTOR? THANKS.
how exact do the capacitors need to be to the original? have a 35mfd 240v that i absolutely cannot find anywhere online
I’m not a electrician but I would match what you have. Here is a place to start www.bghydro.com/capacitor-hps-250-35-mfd-240v.html
Thank u appreciate it
You're welcome!
Get light on your subject and auto focus will work. Other than that great video!
Good job
This was a long time ago and didn’t know much but thank you my friend.
In removing the Start and Run capacitors to test them, the next day I could not remember where to reconnect the wires.
Good vid, thanks!
coc aine is a hell of a drug
Sir im from Philippines. My problem is i already change the capacitor the run and start capacitor but still humming
Ronel Salvoro your air piston is probably froze up. Their is nothing you can do if that happens. I’m so sorry buddy,
Ronel Salvoro chec your pressure switch
Check valve possibly failed or the bleeder has failed by not taking pressure off the head thereby locking up your motor? Other possibilities maybe a bearing failure.
But try and disconnect the pump tubing at check valve at try and start motor if it runs the it’s probably your check valve .
Yes thanks
Simple issue, when you can find the capacitors
If you ever take a capacitor out and loose it before ordering another its almost impossible to find the right one again.A larger value will always work but not a lesser value. The trouble is getting one to fit the cover.
