The Shooting Distance Paradox: Why Does This Phenomena Happen With All Shooters?

  • Why is it not proportionally harder to shoot 6 steel plates at a greater distance? I explore this shooting phenomena in this video. I demonstrate that adding over twice the distance of my prior video for the same challenge resulted in only an added time of about 17% to shoot successfully.

    An interesting analysis. And something that I've noticed myself over the years.
    Now I don't shoot for speed, but for accuracy. It's my belief that as the distance increases it causes one to concentrate upon the target as a whole, rather than the exact center. At 8m~10m, my concentration is on the very center. However, at 25m and beyond, the target decreases in visual size. This causes one to concentrate upon the whole targert, completely ignoring the now invisible center. Further, as the distance increases, I'm more relaxed and able to make consistent hits. This applies to rifle, pistol, and bow. I use open sights on firearms, and shoot "instinctive" with a bow. Been doing this for 60+ years. And over half of this time I was in a profession where center mass was paramount. Yet I can't hit a thing using a scope or dot sights worth a hoot.

      I have to agree with angry ranger, shooting open sites for us ancients as I would call myself is something our brain is totally acclimated to. I have a red dot on my carbine, and it has taken a lot of work to be comfortable with it My service sidearm, open sites and I shoot for accuracy as he said. Thanks for posting this video Good job good job

    Agree 100% I never worried about squibs. Trusted the PMC or Win factory ammo and my reloading. Any powder anomaly you can feel instantly. If you are shooting at a pace that prevents you from stopping after a strange recoil event, you are shooting beyond your safe limits, imho.

    Great videos, I enjoy watching your productions, and the passion you show about firearms.
    Ive been enjoying firearms since i was 10, im now 61 yrs old, and have mostly an eclectic collection, Many older winchester rifles, some dating back as far as 1881, some reproductions, simply for cost sake, and shooting lever action silhouette.
    A fair amount of bolt rifles, a few shotguns, and several revolvers, mostly S@W's, one Colt god cup, and a few SAA clones.
    My passion is shooting competition, mostly long range silhouette, my favorite is the cowboy silhouette.
    Thanks for the fun videos!

    I have been watching your videos on auto-play all last evening and I'm back this morning over coffee... About 15-ish years ago, I picked up an A.Uberti SAA in 38-40. I also purchased at that same time, a custom rig for it from John Bianchi of Fronier Leather (When John still owned it), the "Gunfighter Special". It's been great watching your channel. One question, if I may; where is TUCOtheratt come from? Is there a good story there?

    That if interesting, as it is not often I see a person’s aura on film. And I almost never see a person’s aura in a RUclips video, as it usually does not show up well. But your’s is showing up quite well, at least 3 out the first 5 layers are. It’s a beautiful pale yellow, or light green.

      It's interesting that you noticed that. I think what you are seeing is that I have to turn the gamma up on my editor because I'm videoing at 46 degrees north on the winter and if the day is cloudy there isn't enough light for a good video with bumping the gamma.😃

  • @donphilp7511
    @donphilp7511 7 месяцев назад

    This was excellent and I really enjoyed it. You mention the sweep is smaller as you go further away which should assist you. However the accuracy is very important. I do notice that you mention how far away you're shooting from five ten fifteen twenty twenty five. I am wondering whether just by saying the distance psychologically keys you up to be a little too tight. What if you said nothing about the distance. Perhaps lineup at your personal choice of distance at any time during the exercise. Put a stick in the ground by your foot.
    And and fire your routine. Try to experiment a few times and see if you do not gain accuracy and hitch. Just because your brain is not wired into a specific distance. I guess what I'm saying is. Are you faking yourself out by mentioning the distance. I realized it's important but not while you're shooting. Only for analysis afterwards.

    • @TUCOtheratt
      @TUCOtheratt  7 месяцев назад

      I mention the specific distance in this video to demonstrate the point. However, I seldom pace off or measure the distance as a rule. The other points you made about faking oneself out are getting into the psychology of shooting, which is a fascinating subject. I will go into that more in upcoming videos. Thanks for watching 😃

    Shooting fast is one type of high level shooting. But it’s not the only high level shooting that exists. It is possible to evaluate for squibs and still be shooting at a high level, but it’s not the type of shooting that requires one to shoot fast.
    I’ve shot 4” groups at 100yds with a .357 revolver. Maybe that’s high level shooting, and maybe it’s not but I didn’t do it fast.
    I ain’t mad at ‘ya, but it just seems like your only looking at the one type of shooting and completely discounting all others as “not high level”
