Reminds me of the dance in FF8, where Squall struggles or simply doesn’t feel like dancing, but then one fade later he just masters it, and seemingly plays it off that he knew the whole time.

Sure it's somewhat contrived, but at least it makes sense given Squall's characterization at that point.

Something that I've noticed that people don't seem to talk about with the reactor explosion. If you look at the initial explosion it actually wasn't that big and it still made the reactor malfunction. Shinra actually was framing them and blew it up themselves. Which is why the robots started shooting up the place and blowing things up. It was to make avalanche seem horrible. The actual explosion from the bomb was tiny and did it's job. But you examine that cutscene and you'll see the robots blow everything up by themselves

@@JojoMonReturns91 that video is referencing cancel culture and woke nonsense from Kotaku. The development of part 2 started in November of 2019.
The game was fantastic. They wrote the characters well, and I am convinced I am playing the 1997 versions of them. SE is showing complete control over it's property, and I feel the influence of Nomura is way overblown here.
Kitase has explained in multiple interviews what this remake was going to be, and they absolutely delivered. It's a full on exploration of the world and characters of, likely, the entirety of the FF7 and compilations.
They made many decisions in this first part that show clear, careful consideration (such as how they are choosing to portray Sephiroth in an age where the mystery to his power is long gone).
Fans of the original who love the world of FF7 will enjoy exploring it. Fans of the original who want it to be 1:1 and think that remaking it like that will bring back the magic of 1997 will be disappointed.
SE took a risk, and one that I feel it is justified in taking. But like all risks, it can backfire.
      So far, it hasn't.

@Grima the Fell Dragon For me, I was only really a fan of the original games story. Once Chain of Memories came out, that is when I stopped caring about Nomuras wild ride.
Honestly, I just dislike Time Travel in general. It is a really cool plot device that gets abused way to much by crappy writers. So many stories that have it do not need time travel, and it tends to mess up every part of the story. So many writers can not even write it correctly, and end up breaking their own set rules in order to achieve a certain goal of theirs.

Yeah the ending put them in a very risky place
They basically can't go back to the original plot anymore, otherwise the ending here was for nothing and it'll look like really poor planning. There's not a really a safety net anymore. They essentially have to create a new story with some similar elements that can stand toe to toe with the original and that's not easy

Not a final fantasy 7 fan, never cared for the game but the fans have my sympathy here. It's like, even if this whole remake ends up being really good, that's not what the people wanted; they wanted an updated version final fantasy 7. They like FF7 because of it's story, events and characters. You can't just take those and try to make a time travel story of all things.
As for how your gear might be affected in part two, well trails series does a really unique thing with this. Trails games are all interconnected, hell the second game starts the next day after the first one. And the way it's done in those games is that you still have your quartz BUT they don't work with your new model more up to date Orbments, meaning you have to let go of them. You do get some starting bonuses if you have a save file of the previous game depending on how high your rank was at the end of it. So just say, our Materia is not up to date or it cracked or something like that but give the player some bonus starting items.

Yeah, I'm definitely less than fond of the Whispers as a plot element. It really feels like a lose-lose situation they've written themselves into. Because if you change too many things, you disappoint people who wanted to see the original story retold. And if you don't change too many things, then the idea of struggling against fate feels disappointing because the future refused to change. The idea of Destiny vs Agency is an interesting philosophical discussion, but it's difficult (not impossible) to tell a satisfying story with those elements, especially in gaming where the player is (to some degree) controlling the characters.
That said, I think they could still make it interesting. Because there's that bit where Sephiroth says "Join me and we can defy fate together." So they could introduce elements of "did we do the right thing or is that what Sephiroth wanted us to do?" and then the choice of "do we need to put fate back on course or find a new way?" If the upshot of it is that the characters become arbiters of their own fates, that could theoretically become interesting. Especially with Aerith, if her death is not just a thing that happens to her but a choice she makes with full agency, it could add some depth to her sacrifice. Do I trust Nomura enough to handle these things well? I'm not sure.
1:48:42 - Clement's idea does sound interesting. And that's sort of how Wall Market goes. Depending on your choices you can deal with new stuff from this game and get a new dress, or the questline from the original game and get a dress that looks more like that game's dress.
The idea of the planet having a will of its own fits well with this story, but the particular implementation of the Whispers is complicated at best. And in part because this is a remake. If this were the only version of this story, it wouldn't be quite as much of an affront to introduce ideas of Fate, but having a remake where the characters are aware that things are supposed to happen a certain way is less than satisfying. I'll withhold full judgment until I've seen the full story, but I'm apprehensive to say the least.

EDIT: Hojo didn't get his line about Cloud's past out. The Whispers yeeted him out of the room before he could finish his sentence. This is clearer in the Japanese version because the negative ("not") is at the end of the sentence. Also, the security guard that appeared to recognise Cloud in chapter 2 actually recognised the Buster Sword (the JP audio goes "Wait, that sword is...!").

One thing I think FF7 Remake absolutely nailed was the world building. In the original, Midgar feels less like a city and more like a set piece. You barely interact with anybody there. The events play out quickly to set up the rest of the game, and then you don't think about Midgar again until almost the end of the game. Midgar in FF7R feels like a lived in city with real people. Hell, they introduced a cartoon dog that serves as a propaganda piece to keep the citizens brainwashed.

He's already allowed to be very self-indulgent, which strikes me as odd cause one would usually expect that to be frowned upon in the more traditional japanese work environment. And imo Nomura isn't that great of a writer; might be one of the better ones Square might have at the moment, but most other big game companies are doing better in the story quality department.

As much as love the FF franchise (FFIV, FFXII and FFT being my favourites), I'll have to admit SE is taking full advantage of both nostalgia and the investment fallacy.
Long story short if other developers remade a game and divided it into multiple full priced episodic games they'll be hung out to dry however because its FF VII; "The best FF", "the best JRPG", "the best game of all time", etc they can get away with it plus folks just have to see how it'll "develop" and "end" regardless if it's objectively good or not.

There's also the fact that the dev team explicitly stated in interviews that this project as whole would be a "faithful adaptation" of the original's storyline, when the final episodes are anything but.
Feels like they were afraid of announcing it as a Sequel/Reboot, so they just lied to fans who wanted an expanded but faithful adaptation of one of videogames' most classic narratives.
Feels pretty sketchy to me imo. Specially considering they never put the "episode 1" on this games cover

Dude, I never cared that much about the original FFVII. I've only played it until the point where Cloud meets Aerith and Reno in the church, I never grew up on it (I'm 15), and the most I care is with TeamFourStar's absolutely masterful reinterpretation of the game's plot for Final Fantasy VII Machinabridged- which I care very deeply for and absolutely love, but that's more about TFS and their writing/acting capabilities than it is about FFVII itself. And even I know that it's impossible to remake the whole thing in one go, especially if they wanted it up to snuff with the level of detail in this first part. It's just unreasonable. That's why I forgive them.

    • @GeneralGodzilla1
      @GeneralGodzilla1 4 года назад +2

Here's the problem though. It's not just "becuz Square" that people deny any criticism. It's because it's really stupid and full of buzzwords instead of people, usually the purists, knowing what they're talking about; or they're just saying it to be disingenuous.
Let's get this tired argument out of the way. Yes, it is not the full story compared to the original BUT it is a full game with enough content to justify full price, new/expanded story beats included. It's like saying the Legend of Heroes series is milking you for all its worth. Yeah, each game is a huge chapter in a greater story, but they're all 70+ hour rpgs with nary a moment wasted or drawn out.It makes no sense calling that a "piecemeal ripoff" game.
Compare that to the likes of games like Destiny or Battlefront where they purposely cut out huge chunks of content, story and gameplay, to sell to you in DLC packs for their "live service" so you'll stick around to see if it even gets better than what it should have been in the first place.

The best part of the Remake for me was the dialogue and characterization. Post Final Fantasy 9, I find a lot of the characters and their dialogue to be pretty bad. They ether come off as very obnoxious, or as Clement puts it "Amateur College Philosophers on Xanax". They managed to make Cloud his normal socially awkward wannabe dork instead of a insufferable emo found post FF7. Aerith is not a stoic airhead like in Kingdom Hearts. Jessie's added characterization is really really good. Tifa and Barret are the same lovable selfs as they were in the original.
Biggest concern for me is the ending. I really am not a fan of the attitude of "making something different, just for the sake of differentiation. The past will always be there, so we should create something new". I am find with some changes(IE Jessie), but I want the games to respect the original and its legacy, since it is still really good. I do not like Nomura's writing style in the slightest, and all of its biggest flaws would really mess with the original. From refusing to kill certain characters, using questionable and often crappy plot devices, shallow commentary on interesting themes, focus on enigma and convoluted explanation that creates a cycle of confusion, etc. All of that would hit 7 really hard, especially the first issue. However, what is causing the controversy is no one really knows how far they will go.
Maybe they are just doing this to raise hype, and will be fairly restrained. Maybe they really will write Nomura's FF7 crazy fanfiction. No one, including myself knows. I hope for the next 2 games, that they continue changes that flesh out the worlds and character(Jessie, Denizens of Midgar, Midgar itself, etc). However, I hope they restrain themselves with the whole "Defying Fate" theme as 7 had two better main original themes in regards to identity and purpose of death. Don't create massive changes that would mess with the original solely for the sake of "subverting expectations", "a (happy) ending", or any other such nonsense. I truly guess we will have to wait and see where Nomura and Nojima's wacky ride takes us.

I think the ending is a giant smoke screen. A mere false sense of security. The group defied destiny and think they can continue to do so. However, they're gonna get hit hard when the character dies. The lesson is going to be that sometimes, destiny comes and there's nothing you can do about it.
That character needs to die otherwise everything falls apart. Barret getting help from the whisper's though, I think was a callback to the idea that he was supposed to die in one of the original scripts.

I feel like the name actually has a large amount of issues with this. To be quite blunt, the title of the game doesn't lie as a remake is simply to "make (something) again or differently". However, what gamers these days think when they hear "Remake" is that pretty much everything will be the same when in fact they planned for this game to be something new.
I feel that we just need to give the story a chance as a big issue is that it's not what people expected from a remake of a classic such as this. Just as it has the potential to flop, it also has the potential to be an actual well written story,

@@dragonmasterxyz3544 Well, I think this goes beyond the title itself. The marketing for the game heavily implied it would be the same story just with new stuff to expand the story and the same moments but executed in a different way. They definitely marketed changes, but nothing as drastic as the ending. After years of people asking for a remake, they finally deliver it only to pull the rug under everyone literally in the tail end of the first installment
I think it's fair to give the story a chance though. I would rather they make something good out of it, even if I don't like the direction they went with. It'd be a lot worse if the story ended up bad because then they traded the opportunity to adapt a pretty good one for an original one that ended up being a mess
That being said I'm still largely skeptical. Nomura is part of the reason Kingdom Hearts is more complicated than it needs to be. And while he didn't write this game directly, he definitely had an influence with it in some way since he's the director. Nojima too, the actual writer, from what I've heard (never played it) didn't too well in XIII-2's story and that installment involved alternate timelines as well. Hopefully they know what they're doing but they definitely need to show everyone that they have a plan for all of this

@@water223 Yeah I agree....Nomura being the director has me skeptical to say the least, but I'll be open minded as I welcome a new direction....just don't mess it up.

I don't really listen to podcasts, but I listened to this entire one. Greatly enjoyed your commentary and personality, Johnny, and that of your guests.

I believe the next game will be called 'Final Fantasy VII Seconds', since it is the second part of the remake and is a nod to what Sephiroth says at the ending.
EDIT: Also, apparently it takes 7 seconds for Sephiroth to impale Aerith in the original game.
