Over the years I've used both. I was a huge lover of the Remo's, and have had both the clear Pinstripes, and Black Pinstripes. And they had served me well when I played in a few bands. After purchasing a Tama kit, it came with Evans, and I loved the sound, but they were single ply, and I needed a little more dampening (and I hate using tape or gels) So I went to my standby Remo's, and they were tough to tune, and sounded inconsistent with each other, so the next time I needed heads, I talked to one of my drum shop guru's and he said to try the EC2's. Those were the EASIEST heads to tune! I love the sound, they are consistent all over the entire kit, and are just wonderful heads!
For me I’ve tried both and the remo pinstripe just has more attack and sustain I get out of them compared to the evens EC2S. The Evans heads just have too much controlled sound. The remo heads just sound fatter to me, but that’s what I love about drumming. It’s all about what kind of sound you like for your kit and that’s what matters. Personal preference.
I prefer Remo but here I prefer the ec2’s. To me they sound more full here and resonant. The pin did sound good on the floor tom though but choked on the 10” to my ear but the Evans sounded consistent on each drum.
I have definitely used REMO ambassador snare and REMO pinstripe coated or emperor clear for toms and kick all my 30 years back as a professional, I tried EVANS G2 a few years ago and I think EVANS paid a lot of attention to have such a good product.
The pinstripes are my favorite, but I sometimes use the black dots because of the way they look. Clear CS is one of my favorite snare batter heads though.
I've used both, and they are pretty similar. EC2 have slightly more highs and more sustain, and sometimes I'd use more muffling on the EC2s than the Pinstripes. The Pinstripes tended to be fat and splatty. At the time, I preferred pinstripes, although I prefer EC2s in this demo. They were on different kits though. I don't need as much muffling as I used to, so I could use either.
thank you VERY MUCH for this video, it's for a funny fact the exact thing i needed rn xD I was searching for special Tom Heads and had like 20 that i like, from all the 20, only exactly these 2 made it for the final decision, really needed this video and i'm very thankfull that u made it also with such a high quality and professional performance!
Listen Drummers I have found the ultimate tom duo, evans ec2s frosted for batter, with remo ambassador coated for reso, I know this is weird but omg 😲 😳, it made my pearl session sing like I've never heard before!!! The frosted ec2s are so musical, and resonate the note of the drum so well, the the warmth and low end of the ambassador or reso just tops off the drum, its incredible!
So, I used Remo heads for years and switched over to Evans 5 or so years ago. I really like my Evans heads. THAT SAID: the Remo PS sounded fuller with a purer tone to me. The Evans seemed to have a bit more attack. BTW, I found this video because I was trying to decide between putting one of these heads with a low tuning on a particular drum (I've actually have a PS on another set doing this job) I still have not decided but thanks for the excellent video! :^)
Interesting....WOW these sound similar. The single ply heads have a much more dramatic difference. If you're old and fat like me, you remember a time when Evans couldn't come CLOSE to REMO. That said, whatever is happening in the Remo manufacturing process, has made tuning/seating excruciating, even to this day. The head has to be seated, stretched, etc...before it finally settles in. That can be a few days or a week of playing. I can get Evans tuned up in seconds....literally. I was stunned the first time I experienced that. And, the consistency of that process is all over the place, because of Remo's complete lack of QC. They're (IMO) the best sounding head ONCE that happens. But, Jesus, what a pain. These days, the sound is close enough to where it's just not worth fighting the Remo issues, unless I'm recording. Outstanding video guys. You did something very difficult, in getting both sets of heads dialed in perfectly for this comparison. Well done.
It's really frustrating, but generally I have always defaulted to Remo coated ambassadors, but in the last few years I have had encountered a couple of dud ambassador heads. I also just got a pack online for 12,13 and 16 and initially the 12 was just not working. As a last ditch desperation, I tuned it as tight as I could and left it over night. The next day I took the head off, reseated it and it suddenly worked as it should. The only reason I persevere with the Remo's besides it being my favourite sound is that, every time I try Evans , I like them for a couple of days, but feel like the heads (particularly coated) are not as durable. They seem to go off quickly. There is also something about the sound that starts to annoy me as they play in, where as even if the coating wears off the contact point of an ambassador,to me they still sound good. I can make a set of ambassadors last for 4-5 years (on toms) and they do what I want them to.
@@mancuniancandidatem Yup! I agree. I learned a LONG time ago, from an old pro to torque the Ambassadors down for 24hrs, and then play them aggressively for about a week to really get them seated and sounding their best. And, like I said, when recording, I’ll deal with it because I agree with you, they to this day still sound the best. But, for daily playing, I’m really enjoying the Evan’s. Btw…I think (don’t quote me on this) the UV1 series has a coating guarantee’s not to come off. I haven’t tried them yet, given I don’t really have that problem with the coating. But, I believe that’s the line with the guaranteed coating. And, as always, the kit makes a big difference. I bought a set of the Aquarian Modern Vintage that I’m really looking forward to trying out, as well. I heard a set of those on the same kit I’mp playing here on RUclips (Yamaha Hybrid Maple) and they sounded absolutely incredible. 👍
@@phillamoore157 That's good to know that torquing the ambassadors should be standard practice. Thanks! I would love to try the Aquarian heads out sometime.
The EC2 sound great! It seems to have more high end and clarity, while maintaining similar control. The PinStrip still sounds great though, and is still my personal choice. Probably because I've been using them for so long, and I tend to tension them a little looser to get more breath out of them, a little more "air".
Great video and sound comparison. Overall I did prefer the sound of the Remo Pinstripe. But maybe that's because my eyes took over a time 2:27 during the demo of the Evans EC2. The floor tom looked like it had a puddle of water sitting on it and my eyes kept seeing waves and ripples on that floor tom head.
A tad better Remo as it had a bit less sustain which is what I’m looking for. Currently have black dot Which I love especially with tom control rings. Sometimes I like a lot of staying if you’re looking for Phil Collins sound, or if you want a little more punch unless the stain the Tom control rings work well for that.
The Pinstripe to me has a tiny bit more overtones and a bit more low end on the stand tom. On the EC2 the stroke has a bit more attack, but they really sound almost equal.
I wish yall did a blind test first to see if we spotted any difference ..just at first....or even compared each size drum first maybe? Idk maybe that comparison works best for me only lol... (and i know this wasn't a "which head is better") Anyways, i love the content ... you guys got good chemistry!! cheers
They both sound good. I'd like to hear a comparison after they've been played for a month. Just to hear which are more durable and keep their tone longer, because I always had the impression Remo's need some time to really get to their optimal tone, where as Evans peak early, but also wear down faster. But I could be wrong.
You really need to do a side by side. You need to hit the 10" Remo then the 10" EC 2. The heads are so similar it's the best way to hear the difference.
I experienced the problem you pointed out at the end of the video about Remo PS heads not sitting properly when you first put them on. I thought the head was defective and not perfectly round. When I tightened them I got a buzzing noise. So I never bought them again. I had used empower and ambassador heads for a while and did not see this problem.
every time i have tried switching from my trusted remo pinstripes to evans i have always found the life of the head is shorter , my sons kit has remo pins on it and he has not changed them in 8 years and they still tune up just as good as they always have , but i have found in the past that the evans fade quickly , i am going to give them one more chance today infact ,hopefully i don't the fade this time
If it's not a stupid question to ask.....let's say I want to go with the pinstripes as the batter heads on my 12"-13" 16"toms. Is there a prevailing wisdom as to what goes on the resonant side of those toms? It's a set of Fibes. I'm thinking of going with a Aquarian Super kick 2 for the bass batter, but again, not sure about the reso side. The set has Evans Hydros on it now, but I believe they are 25 years old, hence, the thought to replace everything (but the snare, which is fine) Also thinking of picking up a drum dial to help. Thoughts?
Hands down I believe the Evans have more tonality and brings the natural pitch of the drum up front more so than the Remo. Again, that's just what I'm hearing.
Evans has more of a gel like texture which is more muted while remo is more plastic, giving more natural sound. I like evans because it stops shaking and gives more rebound
I don't know what you've tuned with but that 12 and floor sound odd and flappy which was even more apparent with the ec2's... there's low tuning and then beyond... still I'm pinstripes all day
Guys, great Dive into these two heads that I am considering for my PDP Concept Maple Kit. A key question... What Reso heads were used?; How were the Reso / Batter heads Tuned? I tend to have a difficult time getting to my "sweet Spot" on my Toms. I'm a realtive novice at drum tuning. I'm a 70 YO, retired guy, who resurrected playing drums after 50 Years (1969). I play for recreation at home about 1 hour a day. Appreciate your advice.

As far as drum heads I prefer remo ambassador clear for reso, and coated ambassador for batter.if I'm recording I prefer remo pinstripe 2 ply for batters.
Not sure if it's tuning or the heads. But let's just assume you used a drum dial to tune both heads to the same specs. The EC2 sounds like it's flat notes compared to the Pinstripes. Also the EC2 Heads has some sort of bitter sustain. Hard to describe.
I heard a more concise, even sound from the Remos. The Evans sounded fatter and brighter imo. It seemed like the Evans were more laid back while still being able to cut through a mix. Where the Remos sounded staple for just enough cut with precision. (Evans fan myself; seemingly slight genre-expanding capabilities.)
Evans C2 I've found have slightly more high-end to them giving them an advantage in terms of attack. That being said, if I was sitting at the back of a club, I doubt I could tell any discernible difference. Recording wise, if I was using Pinstripes I'd move the mic a bit closer (attack) and turn up the high end slightly - and then the sound tech would slap my hand and say "What the fuck do you think you're doing? Touching my mics and board, eh?" So there you go.
Yall are missing the point of remo's pinstripe sound difference the remo pinstriped are open live sounding the Evans are brighter sounding but are very good in punch but has wide tuning ranges buy a Evans or remo drum head and look at the back of how bright how much sustain and attack they have I like Evans ec2 cause they sing on my toms remos pinstripes been around for years and what they have inside are oils if you bust that head that's what comes out of it
@@danlc95 back then they did I've seen it on my uncle old Ludwig kit he had he busted one in the 80's and oil came out he said cause he a heavy hitter after that he never liked them but years go by technology changed that I agree no oil
@@DJENERGY210 - I split PinStripes from the 80's too. Never had any oil leak from them. I still have a few from the early to mid 80's in the basement here, and no oil bubbles in those either. That light refraction is called "newtons rings". Bob Yerby from Remo told me they never made any oil filled heads when he visited the ship where I worked back in the 2000's. Is it possible it was an Evans Hydraulic?
@@danlc95 never heard that from Evans though which I have on my kit of the ec2's you see in my profile pic but wow I could be wrong on those remos hmmm I'll talk to my uncle about him he has way more experience of drums then me lol
@@DJENERGY210 - Totally understand. If you get a chance, next time You're at a drum shop pull a Hydraulic head out of the box, and an EC2, G2, Emperor, or PinStripe. The Hydraulic will have air bubbles in the oil. It looks like a few random Swiss cheese holes. The other heads have that rainbow look sometimes, especially if you put pressure on the film with a finger or something. The non oil filled Evans twin ply heads also feature usually one small vent hole somewhere around the perimeter of the the head, or sometime in the collar of one of the plies. This is why Evans heads are so incredibly consistent, and rarely put out a "dead" head. Remo will sometimes ship a dud that won't tune up or have any tone. Sometime a pin prick around the collar will let the air out and fix that situation. However, if we try that with am oil filled head, the oil would escape and leave you with a probably slightly more muffled EC2 type sound.
EVANS. They make drums sound like dang drums! Remos tone wise are great but EVANS has more beef lower tones on all of their heads. I’ve used both in the past but I’m all the way EVANS now for years
They both look pretty cool, but the nature of the EC2's dampening is way more controlled and consistent. I've always like the look of the PinStripe though. That cobweb look around the perimeter always interested me.
I think Pinstripes have changed. They used to be more clear & rang a little better. The newer ones seem a little foggy & sound chunkier than they did in the 70's/80's. To me, it seems like they changed plastic around the same time that they started putting the larger logo on the heads. Does anyone else agree? Maybe I'm losing my mind...
When I saw this video, I coudnˋt hear any difference between Remo and Evans. Only the processing of the Evans head is probably better, as it lies neatly on the edge of the shell.
Agree the sound is very similar between the two types of head, both exhibiting the same amount of dampening qualities. But for my money the Evans had a slightly richer tone across all drums. The Remo's sounded slightly 'tighter' to me.

it is difficult to ear difference...i am REMOguy but i just try the new ECS2 and they do the job...in drum room.
Only Remo ❤️
I heard a more concise, even sound from the Remos. The Evans sounded fatter and brighter imo. It seemed like the Evans were more laid back while still being able to cut through a mix. Where the Remos sounded staple for just enough cut with precision. (Evans fan myself; seemingly slight genre-expanding capabilities.)
You can tell when you hear a pinestripe I think. The Evans sounds "same" but you can notice It´s not pinestripe
Evans, because the consistency of the quality. with Remo’s i had lots of problems
Both amazing, Evans sounding better from the video
I think I'll stick with my Remo Pinstripes. They sound very similar but I would still give the nod to Remo here.
I watch this on my JBL surround sound for the best sound and Remo sounded the best..
I just put the EC2 drum heads on my kit and I am very dissapointed. Going back to Remo Ambassadors.
Very similar, Evans sound slightly more polished, but it negligible
I feel like the Evan’s were tuned a tad sharper hence the brighter the tone
Yall are missing the point of remo's pinstripe sound difference the remo pinstriped are open live sounding the Evans are brighter sounding but are very good in punch but has wide tuning ranges buy a Evans or remo drum head and look at the back of how bright how much sustain and attack they have I like Evans ec2 cause they sing on my toms remos pinstripes been around for years and what they have inside are oils if you bust that head that's what comes out of it
There is no oil in any Remo drum head.
I’ve used both in the past but I’m all the way EVANS now for years
Sehr gut!!! Danke schön!!!
Nice video .comparison
i like remo sound❤
thanks for watching
EVANS!!!!!!!!!!!
wow... ive been a lifetime evans ec2 player but remos killed this shootout. I feel like a damn fool.
Evans just look way more cool without that inner matte ring of remo's. Sound is similar, so I willl go for evans
There are some Evans clear without the rings in them
They both look pretty cool, but the nature of the EC2's dampening is way more controlled and consistent.
I've always like the look of the PinStripe though. That cobweb look around the perimeter always interested me.
I slightly preferred the Pinstripes.
Remo Ebonys vs Evans Hydraulics Please
prefer the remo but litle bit lower tuned
I like Remo pinstripe
I think Pinstripes have changed. They used to be more clear & rang a little better. The newer ones seem a little foggy & sound chunkier than they did in the 70's/80's. To me, it seems like they changed plastic around the same time that they started putting the larger logo on the heads. Does anyone else agree? Maybe I'm losing my mind...
REMO
Definitely the evans
When I saw this video, I coudnˋt hear any difference between Remo and Evans. Only the processing of the Evans head is probably better, as it lies neatly on the edge of the shell.
Same same
Agree the sound is very similar between the two types of head, both exhibiting the same amount of dampening qualities. But for my money the Evans had a slightly richer tone across all drums. The Remo's sounded slightly 'tighter' to me.
I heard the same thing. I believe the Evans head would be more similar to an emperor than a pinstripe.
